Shipwrecked and believed dead by his friends, Captain Philip Elliot has been in hiding whilst spying on one of Napoleon’s most trusted lieutenants. Despite being in exile, Bonaparte still has grandiose plans of escape and conquering Europe…with the help of his ex-mistress, La Glacier, the most beautiful and complicit woman in France. Now the Duke of Wellington wants Philip to come out of hiding in order to help expose La Glacier’s plot to free the Emperor.
Lady Amelia Blake has taken London Society by storm, having multiple suitors and multiple offers for her hand—yet she can accept none of them. Pining after Captain Elliot after a brief acquaintance, she could not find another man who had the same effect on her. When one of her suitors attempts to force her hand, she jumps at the chance to escape to France and help Wellington spy on her mysterious aunt. Only, she discovers her partner in this endeavour is the very man she is trying to forget.
Will she be up to the task when her heart has such divided loyalties?
Like many writers, Elizabeth Johns was first an avid reader, though she was a reluctant convert. It was Jane Austen's clever wit and unique turn of phrase that hooked Johns when she was "forced" to read Pride and Prejudice for a school assignment. She began writing when she ran out of her favorite author’s books and decided to try her hand at crafting a Regency romance novel. Her journey into publishing began with the release of Surrender the Past, book one of the Loring-Abbott Series. Johns makes no pretensions to Austen’s wit but hopes readers will perhaps laugh and find some enjoyment in her writing. Johns attributes much of her inspiration to her mother, a retired English teacher. During their last summer together, Johns would sit on the porch swing and read her stories to her mother, who encouraged her to continue writing. Busy with multiple careers, including a professional job in the medical field, author and mother of small children, Johns squeezes in time for reading whenever possible.
This book continued the war spies subplot hinted at in the first one. Normally I run away as soon as I read the word spy but here I could not. Adventure was well mixed with emotions and romance and it was made engaging due to the complex relationship between the h and the villain.
I rooted for this couple and was satisfied about their getting together.
For steam lovers stay away unless you are tempted by a closed doors romance.
This has been a fun series. I love the romance mixed in with the suspense and war. Amelia and Phillip have great chemistry from the beginning. At times the story tugged at my heartstrings, but I really enjoyed it. I'm excited to see which brother's story is told next.
Not Forgotten is the second book in Elizabeth Johns, Brethren in Arms series. I didn't like it nearly as much as I did the first book. The plot continued the story begun previously but to me it dragged in places and the characters didn't seem as compelling as they did in the first book.
I really enjoyed this book. Elizabeth Johns is a superior writer. Her prose evokes emotions and feelings without resorting to the gratuitous and salacious. This is the mark of an excellent storyteller.
I’m always excited to see a new work of hers available on my kindle. I know that I am in for a treat. This story was no different. Once again, she takes us the Regency era where a band of brothers forged in battle approach a new dilemma. Captain Phillip Elliot has found himself in deep cover behind enemy lines. No one knows where he has been for the last year. Life has gone on in England without him. But he’s working for Wellington and the fate of the Empire is in his shoulders.
Lady Amelia is the toast of the ton, but she’s wearing the willow for the missing captain. Even though they’ve only known each other fleetingly, there was just something about the handsome captain that stirred her blood. She can’t get him off her mind.
I loved the way that Johns laid out the romantic path for these two people. It wasn’t easy. Of course not. But in the end one always trusts Johns to get us to the happy ever after. She never disappoints.
Not Forgotten by Elizabeth Johns Brethren in Arms Series Book Two Captain Philip Elliot was presumed dead or missing by most. But, the sole survivor of a ship explosion, he's gone undercover. Under Wellington's orders. His job is to find out what Madame LaGlacier is about. If she is planning on helping Boney escape and if so, the details of it.
Lady Amelia Blake gets to go on an adventure. Perfect timing since she's just caused a bit of a ripple within Society. To her surprise, Wellington wants her to work with a man she only met for a short period of time...but no man since had compared to him. But, she needed to be professional and do the job...not go all moon-eyed for her partner.
The special part of this adventure is that Amelia and her sister, Meg, get to know their Aunt Lisette. The most famous courtesan in France. How can this beautiful woman who looks so much like their beautiful late mother...be as evil as she's heard she is? Loved the story and the characters. Wonderful series! https://justjudysjumbles.blogspot.com...
I have to say I'm really quite obsessed with this series. I love how Johns weaves historical events into into the lives of these characters. It brings realism to these characters and makes for a fun reading experience.
Amelia and Philip a brief but memorable meeting that neither can forget. However, circumstances keep them apart and a true connection is not able to form. With a possible war looming, Amelia nd Philip are thrown together to try to save England. With Amelia and Philips reconnect they must learn to let go of their preconcived notions of each other and get to the know true individual.
This story is full of intrigue and suspense that kept me glued to the pages. Amelia proved to be strong and courageous as she fought for what and who she loved. Both Amelia and Philip and a journey of self-discovery. During their difficult journey, they were able to find out who they were outside the prying eyes of society and to determine what was most important.
This adventure brings together Lady Amelia Blake and Captain Philip Elliot as they use their talents to spy on Amelia's aunt, La Glacier, as she plots to free Napoleon from his captivity on Elbe. It's the pull of family verses country. Amelia knows her as Madame Lissette, but she is more famously known as La glacier, the notorious ex-lover of Napoleon. While Amelia is determined to stay apart from Philip by concentrating on discovering the plot, the draw of their mutual attraction is too great.
I didn't like this one as much as the first adventure, but it was good. Unfortunately I read it in a more chopped up manner rather than consistently. so I feel as though I played catch-up every time with the overall plot. This was more my problem than the story's fault. I will keep it with the series as one day I will read it again and I'm sure get more out of it.
I have read the first book in the series and this one did not disappoint in any way. A great book with adventure and a clean romance.
The story is full of contrasts... loyalty of family vs loyalty of country. France vs England. Right vs wrong. The image of love vs true feelings of love.
I enjoyed reading the continuation of the characters introduced in book one but this story can be read alone and enjoyed!
The characters Philip and Amelia are fun to “watch” as they go on their adventure and discover more than plots. They discover themselves and what they care about and discover each other.
I have enjoyed many other books by this author and hope for more books from her. I really look forward to more along this series!
Amelia meet Phillip in London although the meeting was brief it left unforgettable impression! Phillip also remembered Amelia but the military intrigue took up all of his time! When Lady Amelia and her sister were recruited by Wellington they were working together and that chance meeting earlier bore no resemblance to the danger and excitement this assignment would take them on a journey unforgettable! But at the end of this spy venture so they get their HEA? Read on ...
Amelia Blake has joined her sister and brother-in-law. She met Captain Philip Elliott and then he was gone but she could not forget him. Philip is on a ship that is wrecked and for along time they do not know if he is alive or not. Amelia, Meg and Luke go to Paris to meet up with Wellington. He sends then on a mission which involves the girls' aunt. Philip is to be Amelia's love interest. That was not hard to do. They just need to know it is real for them.
The interesting thing about this book is that The treacherous evil character is a woman. She is the main character of the book but Her allegiance to Napoleon is 1 that the Englishman cannot abide. Scenes take place in both England and France, highlighting the difficult times that Napoleon brought to Europe. The couple in the book Are you in love but do not realize it until close to the end of the novel. I enjoyed it.
I would have given this book 5*, but it is in desperate need of an editor. (I had the same issues in the 1st book as well) Therefore my 3* is based on the story and its characters. I really like Phillip’s character and how the author has portrayed him. It was one of those stories you just want to keep reading.
This is the second book in the Brethren in Arms series. I really enjoyed this book. The story is about the second sister, Lady Amelia and Captain Philip Elliot. They briefly met in the previous book and have been in each other’s thoughts ever since. This is a sweet, regency era love story with intrigue and mystery. I hope there will be a next book.
What more could one ask for in a Regency era romance?? I enjoyed the first book in the series & initially wondered if I would enjoy book 2 -wasn’t certain I really liked Amelia or Philip all that well but with time realized they each actually did have depth & character. Throw in espionage, intrigue, & romance = a great read!
Amalia was ruined for any suitor after just a few moments with Captain Elliott. So much goes on in this story of intrigue, murder, hard family connections, betrayal and romance. Loyalties are confirmed and love grows. It is such an interesting book, and the story continues in the series which I am sure to keep reading.
This was a great story. Phillip a soldier and Amelia was a young maiden. She had her coming out and was soon not interested in her potential suitors. This story involves Amelia and Meg meeting their mothers sister, who was the mistress of Napoleon. This story crosses the English Channel to France, where more adventure occurs.
Saying this book is magnificent is an understatement. I devoured it. I only out it down long enough to eat. This book was just as good or perhaps even better than book one. The characters, just like in book one, were well-written and lovable. John's has a way of writing her characters so that I am drawn in and get immediately attached. So much so that I already miss Phillip and Amelia, not to mention the others. Phillip tried so hard to be a devoted soldier and not give in to the feelings he had for Amelia. Amelia also tried to convince herself it was better not to act on her feelings, afraid they were not reciprocated. It made for an interesting story, but I'm glad they both came to their senses and stopped being stubborn. This book is a little emotional. I giggled one minute, got a little sad the next, and held my breath a few times. Elizabeth Johns is an exceptional author and I am thankful that she gives me the opportunity to read an advance copy. This in no way affects my review. I am very much looking forward to book 3 and any other new books. If you have not read her other books, I encourage you to do so starting with the Lorring-Abbott series. You will not be disappointed.
Fantastic book. Lots of intrigue, plot twists, romance and history intertwined together. A perfect combination. I adored the characters and I can’t wait for the next book in the series.
Elizabeth Johns exceeds herself with every new book she writes. You'll love all the characters and the intriguing story from beginning to end. Hoping there is another story in this fantastic series.
This was a great story. I loved the main characters and reading about characters from past stories. Although I read this immediately after the first on the series, it did not spoil this story so I am going on immediately to another by this same author.
Incredibly enjoyable. It is filled with character developing plots that make you want to see each characters success. It has adventure to help the leading couple grow as individuals and help you as a reader to be reminded how much passion is needed in real life.
The book overall had a lot of intrigue and action and in the end one mission is accomplished and a haptics romance finished. Yet it did leave one with a cliff hanger and I do not like those type of books this the 3 rating
Great book to read about Lady Amelia Blake and Captain Phillip Elliott. Amelia’s aunt lives in France and is helping Napoleon’s efforts to escape Elba and return to France! So much goes on in this book that it would be better to read it and enjoy it!!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. This is my third book I have read of Ms. Johns. It was exciting the whole way through. I am looking forward to trading the next book in this series. I like that it is a clean romance. Keep up the good work. God bless.👍
I enjoyed the story from being spies together and falling in love. The only thing is that I should read this before "An Officer but not a Gentleman ". I enjoyed it anyway.
Lady Amelia kept me entertained throughout this story with her escapades. She proved to be courageous as well as beautiful as she worked for her country alongside Philip, the man she secretly loved.
Amelia and Philip's story was very interesting. Makes me want to research Napoleon's rise and fall to see how much truth coincides with this tale. I look forward to the next book.
Enough romance balanced with intrigue to keep the reader interested and engaged. I look forward to the next installment! As always, I highly recommend reading the series in order!
The lost is found and the childish infatuation becomes a woman's love. Highly recommended for all readers. Excellent series, can't wait for the next in the series.
The romance story is not believable, they see each other and it's love for life. No depth or development. The heroine is silly and, mostly unlikable. Amelia went from 17 year old to spy..... again no development.
