Other parents give their children toys and party games for their birthday. My dad gave me and my siblings wooden stakes and flash grenades. To protect us from vampires.
From the moment he adopted us, he warned us about the dangers that lurk in the dark. Obviously, I thought he was crazy. Vampires aren't real, and I was already enduring enough panic attacks without buying into Dad's insane ideas.
But then I met Talon.
Talon has fascinating scars and a mouth I want to kiss and a body I want to feel--and fangs. Vampire fangs.
Suddenly, the weapons Dad gave me start looking real useful.
Only I don't want to fight Talon. I want to feel his teeth on my neck. I can't explain it. He makes my knees goes weak. I know it's wrong, but it feels right.
It feels like destiny.
When Talon bites me, I forget everything, even that he is a monster. Even that I shouldn't be falling for him.
Ann-Katrin Byrde is a writing duo comprised of Ana J. Phoenix and Kate Lowell. As a team they strive to bring you the best mpreg stories they can. They both love to write, read and dream. In their spare time, you can often catch them hunting wild plot bunnies in the fields of their imagination.
This was a book that I neither hated nor liked. I’m being generous with the 3 Stars since it was a 2.5 read for me.
John Solo narrated and, while usually one of my favorite narrators, his performance here added nothing to the mediocre story.
The book was riddled with inconsistencies and raised a plethora of questions and created brow furrows when I pondered not only the world building, but the plot and character actions as well.
The chemistry was so-so. Perhaps this was hindered by John Solo’s stilted narration. Regardless, while I liked the vampire Talon, I didn’t care for Colin the *won’t spoil it for you if you decide to read this.*
For your pleasure: mpreg, short manty scene, biting/blood drinking.
My rec? Unless you need to read every single vampire book out there, skip this one. Audiobook listeners, be sure to listen to the sample and be forewarned that here, the narration did not lift the story.
I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I try to keep my expectations fairly low when it comes to vampire books-not everyone can get it right. But I really liked the main characters and loved them together. This was a bit different from other paranormal books I've read and I mean that in the best way.
This is an urban fantasy, but the author could have really gotten a bit more "fantastical," if you know what I mean. It's fantasy...just go for it! Bring in more crazy stuff...lol.
This isn't my first book by this author and most have been pretty good. I'll be reading more!
There were some clever ideas here, and a few things which didn't work for me personally. Overall, it was a sweet romance, and a nice performance in the audio version by John Solo.
I love this duo of authors - they consistently write amazing characters with great world building and storytelling. This is the first book in a new vampire mpreg - vampreg!! series - and I already can't wait for the next story.
Collin and his adoptive siblings were raised to believe that vampires were real, how to fight them and how to avoid them, and that they were dangerous. Now that they're all grown up, Collin doesn't really believe anything his dad taught them was real - but boy, is he about to be proven very wrong when he meets Talon.
Told mostly in first person POV from Collin, this is the first story in a new series were there are vampires, shifters, witches, and humans are caught up between them. Even more so, as Collin and Talon grow closer and learn more about Collin and his siblings, there was a reason that his dad found Collin and tried to protect him from vampires.
I don't want to say too much and give anything away, but I completely loved the connection between Talon and Collin. I loved the mpreg - how it was explained, how it progressed (although I will say that at times it seemed like he was super pregnant, and then other times not. And sometimes it seemed to be progressing super fast, and then again sometimes not.) I loved that these were some bad ass vampires and that Collin came into his own strength through this story.
Again, I'm definitely looking forward to the next story in this series - I hope we get Luke's story!
I received an arc in exchange for an honest review.
I was quite sure that the book had lost me when Collin referred to his genitals as his trouser snake... but somewhere towards the middle things shifted and I actually ended up enjoying this more than I thought I would.
I liked it enough to finish, but I kept wishing it had more depth, details, and descriptions. A touch of originality or better writing would have made a big difference.
Character Descriptions: Collin: He put glitter in his hair and on his skin. Talon: He had a scar on his face.
So there's glitter boy and scar face. 👎 That's not enough to "see" these characters.
The story was mildly interesting. If it had been fleshed out and felt more engaging, then I would have rated it higher.
As for the sex scenes, they’re so-so. Pretty basic, just like the rest of the book. I didn’t feel enough passion or love to get excited about. Shocking, I know.
Recommended for those: looking for a light and fluffy read that will quickly fade from memory in a few weeks.
Simple plot but a decent read. I certainly prefer this over Twilight, but nothing ground breaking as far as mpreg goes. All the magic, fighting, and resolution was squeezed into the last 8% of the book. I hate rushed endings. But the world of vamps AKB made was interesting, sex was hot, and I plan to read the sequel. 🧛♂️
I was expecting more, something different. But well, it happens.
What I liked less of all was how quickly everything happened at the beginning. It was a nice starting point, with Collin having some mysterious issues with his late father and telling us how he was obsessed over vampires being real. Rebelling against him, he decides to go to a club his father told him and his brothers never to go, and there he discovers his dad wasn't as crazy as he thought. Until here everything all right, my problem was with how fast Talon and Collin both seem to develop feelings. Maybe more for Collin than Talon, since this one being a vampire has more difficulties developing human feelings such as love.
Then the story started getting weird but well... You keep reading because is not horribly weird just... Super weird lol
Generally speaking the series set a nice plot: not so human guys bearing a birthmark that makes them targets, vampire humans hunting people to prevent a prophecy, unhealthy relationships between vampires and their sire (since the sire can control them) and a family full of adopted kids that discover the world isn't as safe as they thought.
However, I can't deny I was more interested in ending this book so I could read Luke and Crimson's (aka Damian) story than so I would discover how their story ends. Do you understand my problem? No, it was not horrible their story, but more than their romance what got me hooked was the general plot.
I want to see Luke having his happy ending, I'm intrigued by Jared as he's the brother that appears less here and, of course, I want Aldrich and Remy to end together.
I'm going for it and since book two was free not long ago (also, the whose series is available with KU), but I'm afraid of Luke's story not being up to my expectations... Fingers crossed here!
I'm not really a big fan of vampire books but this one was quite good even though a bit simple. There was nothing outstanding about the book. It was just another human-but-not and a vampire falling in love, mixed with some mpreg. Not really a fan of mpreg either. And, I didn't get much time to read in the day so a little bit cranky that I had to continue from half after a whole day.
It started off really good but after half way through it lost a bit of its momentum and there were more than a few inconsistencies. The POV jumping and tenses were choppy and there were more than a handful of editing errors. Near the end the story just felt very loosely structured and like it was patchworked together instead of fully thought out. It was a bit of a let down after such a strong start to the book.
It started off well... but then began to lose its way. Also, this book needs more editing.
This book is tough to review. So, I’ll go about reviewing this book like I would writing a story: starting from the beginning of my reading journey, and finishing with this review.
Let’s talk about that cover: it’s pretty awesome. It conveys darkness, romance, and plenty of vampires. The typography is excellent as well. The blurb, likewise, is rich with promise. The first few chapters of this book tell me the book could have done with a bit more copyediting—but there’s so much potential.
Speaking of editing, it’s very annoying when one-line paragraphs are abused.
Very.
Bloody.
Irritating.
Even so, that’s not the biggest problem this book has—but I’ll get into that in a moment. I’ll start with what I did like about the book. The worldbuilding has a lot of promise: this is a fascinating urban fantasy world populated by vampires, witches, werewolves, and stranger creatures besides. Fans of Patricia Briggs and Jeaniene Frost (or Charlaine Harris for that matter) will be right at home. Without spoiling too much, I’ll give you a hint that sires are part of the vampire lore.
I also enjoyed some of the character interactions, particularly between Luke and Collin, though all of the main characters’ brothers had a nice camaraderie.
Things started to go wrong in the middle and at the end. Let me get a bombshell out of the way: this is one of those male pregnancy books. This is also an erotica novel, and *not* a romance. I did not know about either of these things—neither the cover, blurb, nor Amazon keywords gave it away—and I did not appreciate them.
This book suffers from the one big erotica problem: the sex takes over the narrative and the plot suffers. There *is* definitely a plot here, make no mistake, but the two main characters pick the most inopportune moments to have sex. This book needs to take itself more seriously.
The ending had enough setup to be really interesting, but it failed in the execution. Put simply: it was too easy. The themes that were there—humanity, the power of love, the control of magic—are what great fantasy is made of, but no fantasy hero becomes great without a struggle.
Finally, I would like to talk about the whole concept of male pregnancy and why it makes for bad stories. To begin with, it’s emasculating and removes agency. Collin gradually becomes more and more dependent on his vampire boyfriend, Talon, to protect him. The whole point of a relationship between two men is that you *don’t* get this kind of dynamic. This is like a character arc in reverse.
Secondly, I do wonder what effect this has for women. Thirdly, and perhaps most crucially, these kinds of stories fail to represent real men (gay or straight!) It’s pure wish-fulfilment. And it doesn’t do justice to what gay men can do to raise a family.
In short, this story was a dark, even compelling read, following some of the best urban fantasy traditions. But the ending could have been better; the editing could have been stronger. As for male pregnancy? This is one of the most bizarre inventions of the genre, and I really think it should be given a rest.
Colin is a young man with a tragic past. His biological parents were murdered, and his adoptive father died suddenly after they had a heated argument. A year after his adoptive father’s death, Colin ends up at a bar where he meets Talon. Meeting Talon changes everything for Colin. First, Talon is the love of Colin’s life, and second, Talon is a vampire. A vampire who uncovers the secrets of Colin’s past, secrets which threaten to destroy Talon, Colin, and their loved ones.
The Ann-Katrin Byrde writing duo have created a fantastic start to an exciting new series. In this world there are vampires, witches, werewolves, and other supernatural creatures who keep their presence hidden from the average human. Colin’s adoptive father is not the average human, and it turns out, his adoptive children aren’t (no surprise there) average humans either. This isn’t a new storyline concept, but it’s definitely an exciting one when done right. Ann-Katrin Byrde did this story right. There is action, humor, love, cute moments, and hot sex scenes. There were some small portions of the plot that did feel a little slow for me, but those moments didn’t last long, and they was necessary build up for some of the more action packed and fun scenes.
What I loved the most about this book was the characterization of Colin. He was such a fun and delightful guy, and he immediately endeared himself to me. Talon was also wonderful crafted. He had depths and complexities, and wasn’t just another hot vampiric hunk-of-man. The supporting characters were also strongly written, and I’m so curious to know their backstories and secrets.
The audiobook version of Love Bites was narrated by John Solo who does an absolutely fantastic job. John is a master at voicing characters and making them feel alive. I didn’t just listen to this audiobook, I was swept away by an exquisite performance.
I rate base on my enjoyment and gut feelings and thus for both the book and audiobook, I have to give Love Bites an overall rating of 5/5 stars. I was engaged with the story the entire time, and loved it. Once the book was over, I was left wanting more. I’m excited for the sequel.
Ok so I've read this twice now. While my rating has slightly improved the second time around because I see great potential, it still just doesn't hit the mark for me. The story feels disjointed and don't even get me started on the anticlimactic ending. I gave it another shot because I was new to mpreg the first time and I didn't give it a fair chance. Now I enjoy mpreg shifter paranormal books, but this still didn't do it for me.
Love vampires Love magic Love John Solo Just not enough to keep me interested. I am slightly tempted to continue in the series but we'll see.

Okay so per the reviews I wasn’t expecting to like this book but I actually did. It wasn’t amazing or anything but it was entertaining and it kept me intrigued. I also liked the simplicity of the world building which some might consider was non existent. This was very Twighlight-esc but MM version and does include mpreg which I’ve never read in a MM vampire book before. I liked it though, I found this read very interesting. I liked both of the characters though I wish their relationship was a little deeper. There was no longing or like intense feelings but they did care about each other and I love yous were exchanged way before the end. I kind of liked the aspect of the vampires not remembering their lives before they turned simply because Talon had a family before he turned into a vampire but he wasn’t longing for his wife. Even when he was able to remember her he never mentioned her or said anything about missing her. I’m definitely going to keep reading the series. I just hope all of the other books are as safe as this one.
Also I wasn’t the biggest fan of Collin’s POV being in first person and Talon’s being in third person. I get it was because this is two authors but I still think it should have been just one throughout.
NO CHEATING NO OP DRAMA (Collin gets hit on) NO BREAK UP (Collin gets mad at Talon and they don’t see each other for a few days but they don’t break up) AGE GAP 25/?? (Talon has been a vampire for 50 yrs) MPREG HEA (as far as the romance goes)
I walked into this one blind. Which isn't something I usually do. But I loved Mercy Hills so much that it just felt right. And oh my, Ann-Katrin did a wonderful job with this one! The world is great, it feels well built and properly explained. I loved the family, I loved Talon and Collin and their relationship. I'm so glad this series is fully written already because I wouldn't be able to sit through the wait in peace otherwise
A pretty average run of the mill vampire story. Nothing overly wild on the world building side which is odd because this author is usually really good at dragging you into their worlds. I also wasn’t a fan of how the writing style kept changing from first to third person. I get that they wanted Collin to be the main character but when perspectives were changed it was a little strange with the tenses changing.
After reading the bonus scene I have a sneaking suspicion of next couple.
Ann kayrin byrde never fails to dissapoint with her story telling this book is the first book into a great series that I truely lived. Raised to kill vampires , Collin has no defenses against Talon. A whole new meaning to the world opens up for collin. Readbit and enjoy
Love bites was a great read that had me hooked from the beginning, I loved all the characters. However I do wish we seen more of the relationship and chemistry between Talon and Collin as it seemed that we didn’t really see much of it.
Could've been better, it was just a typical vampire story but add the mpreg part, I just wished it was more sophisticated and Romantic most of the times it just felt dull.
