Despite her best efforts to keep her budding relationship with Insta-famous classmate Arata Minami under wraps, Kuroe Akaishi is thrust into the spotlight-only this time in human form. With the new semester underway, the socially awkward kaiju finds herself attracting all sorts of unwanted attention. Can she handle her newfound popularity...?!
Still a cute look at puberty and body image by way of a giant monster metaphor, but I was turned off by the long digression into makeup and makeovers. While I often admire the results of well-applied makeup, I prefer to see people who go without on a daily basis and instead apply the time saved to pursuits like reading and writing reviews on Goodreads.
A new character nicknamed "Rairi" is introduced, and she is popular for making social media videos reviewing and using makeup. But what secret is that makeup hiding? And how heavy-handed will the artist get with the before and after transformation?
I know that makeup is important to some people's self-image, but I don't really understand that phenomenon or how healthy or unhealthy it may be. But at some point I think this particular story crosses over a line despite its attempts at positivity.
I'll still read the next volume, but I'm wary of how Rairi will be used on an ongoing basis.
I'm kind of torn here because I actually really loved how the make over trope and popular cool girl tropes are used here, but I absolutely hate that Rairi's ugliness was shown most through a more ethnic nose and she was given a nickname with racial connontations. However, I don't know if that specific connontation is something Japan is aware of, and it may be a bit of culture miscommunication (even though it still makes me uncomfortable.)
So why 5 stars? I still continue to have so much fun with this series, and this volume might have been my favorite so far in terms of humor and characterization/growth. Plus, we got a Kaiju kiss, and what's gonna beat that?
The artwork as always was very cute, but Rairi’s character is a no. It seemed kind of racist, she has a wide nose so she’s seen as a gorilla and often has bananas around her, and dark skinned people in native looking outfits around her. To feel more confident she uses make up to make herself look more like the people around her, by making her nose look smaller.

Another great volume! I really enjoyed the new character that was introduced in this volume, and I love what they are bringing to the story. The cliffhanger at the end of this volume has me incredibly excited for the next volume though!
The world’s largest puberty metaphor makes a solid return to form in this volume. In addition to zapping back and forth into kaiju mode due to her constant state of ‘boy on the brain’, Kuroe is now in a separate class from Arata.
She’s shy about being his girlfriend, he isn’t fussed. Hi-jinx ensue. It’s all very sweet and pedestrian, but then we get a new addition to the cast, Rairii, and the book shifts into a whole new level of crazy.
Rairii is what this book has needed for a while - a good friend for Kuroe (her other one who’s obsessed with kaiju fades away quickly and the story is honestly better for it - she works best in small doses). I was so worried she was going to be a serious rival/antagonist, but her secret is something so very different.
The entire back section of the book is about body positivity and learning to love and accept yourself, through the lens of [mild spoiler]’what if King Kong and Godzilla were besties’[/mild spoiler]. It goes to some wild places and there’s a great contrast between Kuroe and Rairii, as the latter learns to accept herself in a way Kuroe wants to but can’t manage yet.
And then there’s the art, which is fantastic as usual. It’s all over the place in terms of style, in a good way, shifting around to suit the story effortlessly. I never thought a dog throwing up would make me laugh, but there we go. Then the volume’s climax ends with what I can only describe as one of the best kisses I’ve ever seen in a manga. It’s heartfelt and hilarious in equal measure.
I’m still not 100% certain this series knows exactly what it wants to be yet, but this volume is a damn fine return to form and plots a potentially interesting path going forward.
i love how cute this one was. how she is making more and more friends and how she is gaining a little bit of confidence every chapter. kuroe is one of my favs ❤️
This volume is all about finding the courage within yourself to do the things you really want to do and to be happy, to move forward. It was actually quite uplifting and I genuinely enjoyed the new character Rairi-san. She's a very three-dimensional pretty girl (or perhaps something of a gal?) and it's so nice to see a super popular girl have such a good personality; that being said, I should've known, since Minami is super popular too and one of the sweetest and most genuine manga boys I can think of. Minami is mega boyfriend goals and I love him more all the time. It's super cute that he harbors some sort of affection for Harugon too even if he doesn't understand it. I think it has something to do with the love he has for Kuroe. Some part of him knows that they're the same, but it's such a wild notion that they'd be the same, so why would he ever figure it out unless he found out kaiju transformations were possible? I think that when he someday finds out about Kuroe's transformations, he won't even have to think about it. He'll love her all the same, maybe even think she's even cooler. In addition to that, it's super duper cute that he was so deep in thought about Kuroe while she was so deep in thought about him, causing the quakes. They're an absolutely adorable couple and while I enjoy Kuroe making new friends that are lots of fun, I hope we still see a lot of Kuroe and Minami together too. The first volume still can't be beat, but I'm loving this one a lot too. Simply reading this volume gives me more courage and confidence, encouraging me to think about myself and the girly and pretty things that give me a sensation of power.
Not sure I liked the new girl not just comparing herself to a gorilla but actually being drawn as one when she doesn't have her makeup on. I get it that its supposed to be a self confidence story thing but idk that just rubbed me a bit weird. Still cute kaiju moments overall so I'll probably stick with the series.

i'm personally not a big fan of the "make over" trope and using make up as a magical solution to self confidence etc. i just aren't, i always just feel sad and empty. BUT the thing is that's just what the world looks like. people are extremely shallow, and cruel to people who are "ugly", and trying to change that takes a lot of you, so i get just wanting to feel accepted and covering up so you look normal is the easiest.
but, besides from the slight sadness from that whole plot line, i still loved it. the characters are just so cute and funny, i love all the friendships and the main romantical relationship. and the art style is just SO pretty and aesthetically pleasing. i had fun, it was interesting and just a good time. 💘
I've been Kaiju obsessed since I was a kid growing up with Godzilla movies with my dad. So this series was a must for me.
I was so excited to see a manga with a girl who transforms into a Kaiju it's such a unique idea and I had to start it. I loved every moment of Kuroe's story she's just adorable even when she's trying to hide her Kaiju side and be a normal teenager. I think her love interest is perfect for her, and she has some great friends that she's making.
The Artwork is beautifully done to match a captivating story. I've devoured the first 6 and have the 7th on pre-order as I can't wait to continue this series.
Highly recommend this series if your into monsters and romance.
I started reading this series after some coworkers recommended it to me.
Kuroe Akaishi thinks it might be best to avoid Arata Minami while in school so that no one makes jokes about him being with her but he tells her he doesn't want to ask like strangers and that if anyone says things then he does not want to be friends with them.
Kuroe finds a new friend in Rairi who is interested in make up. But Rairi may have a secret of her own.
I really enjoyed this volume and can't wait for my coworkers to read it too. I look forward to the next volume.
This volume introduces new character, Rairi. At first, it looks like she'll be a rival to Kuroe. Thankfully, she's anything but. She's a genuinely sweet and cheerful girl with a mild makeup obsession and a dark secret. Or is it really that dark? This volume is a little heavy handed about makeup as a confidence booster, but that's a valid approach. It might have landed differently for me if Rairi and her followers were anything but charming and sincere beacons of positivity, but as is it was heartwarming.
When I started this series it was with the thought that I'd get some laughs and be entertained, but this volume in the series is more than I expected. Still humorous and absurd, this volume has some serious heart to it and so much of that is thanks to Rairi.
Rairi, you're amazing. Please don't ever change.
With the introduction of Rairi this volume subverts the vapid and mean pretty girl trope and delves into a discussion about self-confidence and make up. It does so with empathy and I adore it for that. It was also so refreshing to see so many characters being supportive and encouraging of each other.
This volume was such a treat and I am so glad I took the time to read it.
