Ice Jig by S. W. Hubbard is another great addition to the Frank Bennett series set in the Adirondack Mountains.

This town and its inhabitants have become friends since I started reading this series and I was anxiously awaiting Ice Jig. The wait was worth it because the author did a wonderful job with Tug O'Malley's murder and the ensuing investigation. Granted, Tug wasn't exactly beloved, but what a sad way to go.

As always, just when I think I've figured out who the murderer is, I find out I'm wrong, but isn't that what makes a mystery a great read? Between this series and the Palmyrton series, I've been a fan since the beginning and just hope that the author continues to write for a long while.

If you enjoy mysteries, small towns and great characters, this is the series for you. Pick one up and enjoy the visit to Trout Run.

Thank you to the author for providing an ARC at my request. All thoughts in this review are my own and happily provided.

This book is a realistic story about life in the Northeast part of the Adirondack Mountains. Book 6 continues the daily life of a sheriff, Frank Bennett, and his staff, the sheriff’s independent librarian wife, Penny, and the intertwined relationships of small town life. The dead man, called Tug, was trouble to many residents. And yet, Tug’s actual life and history shows more complexity than most North Country residents. A lot of the twisting plot reveals multiple secrets. I’ve enjoyed and anticipated all of this author’s series about Frank Bennett and his life, but Ice Jig was well worth the wait!

The characters lingered with me after I finished Ice Jig, as they always do with one of S. W. Hubbard's books. I feel as if I know them. I really like how Earl is developing as a well-rounded cop, who manages to surprise Frank with his talents. Frank is finally trusting that Earl is worth listening to. Tug O'Malley was not a nice person, but even he got a little sympathy from me in the end. This is just the story to entertain you while you practice social distancing, although it won't take you six weeks to read it! So be sure to pick up all the others in the series to tide you over.

Twisted story/well crafted

This author never fails me. She is a very talented writer who spins a tale about down to earth, real people. Her mysteries also have plenty of twists and turns. I love her books and look forward to the next installment in this series.

Another Great Adventure

Chief Frank Bennett and Earl have another mystery to solve. Small town life may like bucolic and serene but looks are most definitely deceiving. Misdirection and misunderstanding abound in this well woven tale, just when you think you’ve got it another possibility pops up, keeping you entertained to the last page.

Diner special

I eagerly anticipate my trips to the Adirondacks. The town, the scenery and the people are all special to my book lovers heart. Each character is given depth by dialogue and time to get to know them, whether the drifter, the abused child or Chief Bennett. The story has as many twists as the mountain trails but Frank, with the help of his vastly matured deputy Earl, can handle it and hang on until the truth comes out.

Another Winner!

Chief Frank Bennett’s murder mysteries keep getting more and more convoluted and intricate. Nicely paced in the languid small-town way, yet full of surprises and “oh wow!” moments.

Good mystery

I liked the story and am enjoying the series. It has one of my favorite likes, no sex, vulgarity or gore. I liked all the characters even more so since they have flaws.

The marriage between Frank and Penny is a marriage I can relate to. In another series I get so tired of the married couple just being perfect and the husband constantly talking about how awesome she looks and and both are tough and gritty. To perfect of a marriage to believe in. Not so with Frank and Penny.

Bottom line this series is one I can see myself being a resident of Trout Run and fitting right in.

Great Series

I read all the books of this series so far and have enjoyed them immensely. The stories kept me on edge and I had a hard time putting them down to do other important things in my life. Each book moves into the next one with ease and continues the stories about community, people and connections while it spins a mystery around “who done its” that keep Police Chief Frank and his sidekick Earl problem solving and brainstorming to working out solutions that may or may not be pertinent to their case. I enjoyed reading these books very much and I think you might too. Hope another book in this series is in the works.

A disappointing entry in this series . The plot was slow moving and Frank was unlikeable , and overly critical of Earl , who did far more to solve the murder than Frank did with his " guessing " . Frank does not just guess who the murderer is once but three times , arresting his second suspect who the DA has to come to him to suggest looking for facts . The murder more or less solves itself with the help of Earl and seven year old Lucus who is the real brains in this book . Jessica , Marge and Lucus's story is the only reason I continued reading . By far the least enjoyable book in the series .

Ice Jig - a review by Rosemary Kenny

There's never a dull moment in Frank's life as Sheriff of the small town he and his librarian wife Penny call home.
A family mystery with someone who's not whom they claim to be, comes too close to home for Frank's liking and his search for answers causes a rift that may be unfixable.
When a poisonous local blogger's body is found in unusual circumstances, the pool of suspects begiins to deepen.

Wonderful!

Another excellent entry in this series! This one involves residents of Trout Run----their secrets, lies, interactions, and past history. This all occurs amidst worst winter in years---- heave snow, freezing temperatures, and festering animosities. It has another unexpected, shocking conclusion!

Again, another great book in the Frank Bennett series. I read this and Book 7 out of order but it didn’t matter to me as I read them back-to-back. Another great page turner that kept me reading late into the night, and such a surprise toward the end. No spoilers here - you’ll just have to read it for yourself!

Another great read from S.W. Hubbard

Hubbard takes the reader to the Adirondacks in winter - I had to put on a sweater, but I couldn’t put ‘Ice Jig’ down till I reached the twisty, satisfying conclusion. Believable, authentic characters in a wonderfully drawn setting.

Entertaining

Familiar characters, and that makes it enjoyable. The story was slow, and didn't grab me the way some of the others in this series have. I do love the setting!
