A very demanding small child had me read this to him multiple times. I am surprised that he kept returning to it, because the narrative felt poorly crafted. Why does the Count count bats, and then penguins, candles and beach balls? Where is he that all of those objects are present, and in need of being tallied?
He then further references counting farm animals (e.g. chickens) with other Sesame Street residents, but it is unclear why one would have a farm that has both chickens and penguins - not even to mention the bat pajamas that are at one point haphazardly referenced.
Ultimately the Count makes a big show of how counting making him happy… but he never even counts past four in the book. Like, if it makes you that happy, I think you could at least get to eight.
The whole thing feels half baked.
