A vampire story without romance? Now this, I had to see.

I'll never be a fan of mainstream paranormal fiction (I mean--really, you don't even have to ask why), but I'll admit I am secretly into cool vampire stories. There's just so much lore and a never-ending treasure trove of popular media tropes to utterly destroy play around with, ya know?

Anyway, I really loved how Rogue took the world of vampires to a whole new level. First of all, we have them coexisting almost-not-really peacefully with humans, separated by geographical borders and a load of politics and fun stuff like that. Second, the characters are just so hard not to adore. I already had high hopes for Willow since I knew she wouldn't fall head over heels in love with some creepy old vamp dude, but her relationship with her dad was such a lovely surprise. We don't get enough of that these days! And I say that a lot! But it's still true!

It's no surprise that since there wasn't supposed to be any romance, I also had pretty high hopes for our resident vampiric friend, Lord Hanas Blackwell. And I just *leans back and stares at the wall*

he's great, y'all. He might even be my new favorite vampire ever in the entire world of fiction.

(... although tbh that's not saying a lot since I've never really had a favorite vampire character before, anyway, but shhhh)

I could literally make the rest of this review all about Hanas and not regret it, but I won't because I know that's not what you're here for since you can so simply pick up the book and see for yourself *hint, hint* While there were some parts earlier on that did throw me off a bit--too much expository dialogue within the first few chapters--I feel like the rest of the book totally made up for it. But I'm not sure most people agree with that philosophy, so, you know. Leaving that up to you.

Anyway, I thought the plot as a whole was really intriguing, and it certainly did keep me turning pages. I loved the worldbuilding as well! The side characters really shine as well, especially later on when we're introduced to a certain fabulous dhampyr whom I cannot wait to read more about; also, I want to take a moment to appreciate that there are actual young vampires in this story (!!!).

Also, the fact that there's no romance leaves so much room for a real, healthy friendship to develop between Willow and Hanas! Okay, so maybe "friendship" is pushing it too far right now but... they're working on it, right? :P I'll stop rambling now.

Basically, if you're into vampire books but are looking for one that doesn't have any romance, give it a try! And then come thank me later when you're done!

I received an ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

It’s hard to be a vampire hunter when you have a morbid curiosity about vampire culture. Trying to hide her interest in the creatures that killed her mother, Willow trains hard as a hunter. She finally gets to go on an important mission, but she’s attacked and almost killed by a powerful vampire. She finds herself rescued by another powerful vampire—Hanas, the pureblood who rules the nearest vampire province. As new enemies rally, Willow has to put her feelings aside to stop them from destroying everything she cares about, even if that means working with Hanas. But can she actually trust a vampire?

I absolutely loved this new edition of Rogue! Willow is such a driven character; she fights hard to protect those she cares about and for the sake of humanity in general. I also really like the way vampires and vampiric culture are portrayed in this world! Like Willow, I am pretty fascinated by their society! The class system, in particular, is really interesting. And, of course, I have to mention Hanas! I really appreciate his witty remarks and his amusing yet proper personality.

This book was only the beginning! Moriah introduced us to this amazing world, but there’s still more left to discover! I can’t wait to see how the story will proceed from here! Vampire fans, paranormal and urban fantasy fans, or readers looking for a clean read with lots of action should pick this book up!

If you enjoy a fast-paced vamp story without the cliche romance🙄 and lots of action, then this is a good one to check out.🧛‍♂️

-While it's not perfect, it has a lot of great potential. I look forward to reading book two of this unique world and learning more about it's characters!

Ready for an alternate reality of humans vs. vampires?

There have been many tellings and retellings of humans vs. vampires even before Dracula. However, Moriah Jane takes it to a whole new level. Instead of vampires being a race of elusive creatures hidden in the night or humans being a weak and vulnerable species, Jane alters the reality we have come to know. Vampires now hold a large portion of Canada as their own territory. And humans have upped their game in a military style to make sure the border is protected at all costs.

Right in the middle of this modern day mayhem, Willow walks in. She is far from the ditzy teen who falls in love with a sexy vampire for no reason whatsoever. She is a vampire hunter in training who has a fascination with the barely seen vampiric society. However, her fascination is replaced with anger and horror when her town and home are attacked by a mysterious madman only known as the Rogue. When she realizes her father is kidnapped, she abandons protocol and runs into the vampire lands with only Lord Hanas Blackwell as her guide. This leads to a whirlwind of uncovering secrets, fighting for her life, and realizing that not all vampires are evil . . . for the most part.

Willow is a well-developed character. However, she doesn’t carry the story by herself. Hanas Blackwell isn’t a random sidekick for the teen the play off of - he shakes Willow’s worldview without bringing any weird romance into the mix. Their unlikely companionship drives the novel through twists and turns and will have any reader wanting more.

Jane’s strong writing style and even stronger characters will send any reader on a rollercoaster of a great story. If you love vampires without the romance and war-like combat all mixed in with dead on quips and sarcasm, this story is for you.

Vampires - they're just not themselves when they're hungry. 🧛‍♂️ 🍫

A vampire book sans romance? Moriah Jane's ROGUE had my name written all over it! And that COVER. I had to buy this book for that cover alone. 😍 I enjoyed the story, especially the 1st person intros to most chapters. Willow is as hardcore as the cover suggests, and I loved the tug of war between her fascination with vampires and their culture and her commitment to hunting them because of what they did to her mother. ROGUE introduces some interesting moral dilemmas, and I like that the characters didn't have all the answers. The lore was also intriguing, and it was fascinating looking at a world where vampires and humans are perfectly aware of each other's existence and have somehow found an occasionally peaceful way to live with each other.

Not your modern vampire story...
This book was an adventure from beginning to end. With the unique present-tense, flashes into Willow's inner thoughts, and the spunky, sassy dialogue, I really enjoyed this book. I also wisely read the directory at the beginning, so I understood some of the basics of vampire and vampire hunter society. But even if I hadn't, the story does a pretty good job of explaining the setting.
As for the characters, Hanas (yeah, not the Middle Eastern group), Willow, and her dad were well developed. Even the minor characters had unique traits (gun-touting, shoot any vampire that moves, Commander Ashe, anyone?). There was also some growth in Willow, as she came to realize that vampire society is more complex than she thought, and that she can almost trust vampires.
The plot is very fast-paced and battle heavy. There are multiple action scenes where the vampires are attacking humans or each other. The descriptions of the vampires and how they hold their victims spellbound reminds me of old-school vampire descriptions, where vampires are not a thing to be loved, but to be terrified of. It was definitely heart-pounding.
The only very small quip I have with this book is about Willow's thoughts regarding the blood bank humans. These are humans who are convicts and sent to the vampires to be used for blood drinking. Even though I understand Willow's compassion, I personally believe that these convicts are getting the sentence they deserve. Plus, if this was the only way to make sure the vampires don't take civilians instead, I don't see anything wrong with it. That being said, I do agree with Willow's belief that a caste system in the vampire society is wrong. But using violent means to overthrow that system? I'm not sure that's wise, and I hope Willow comes to understand that in the second book.
Anyway, the ethical dilemmas, tension between characters, and plot developments kept me turning the pages to the very end. This is an excellent traditional vampire story!

For disclosure, I read the first version, simply called “Vampiric Red: The Rogue of Vampires.” So take my review with a grain of salt.

I’ll start with the biggest problem I had; the pacing.

The first half is Willow training to be an even MORE dangerous hunter than she presumably already is. I don’t know how dangerous she already is because we have a sizable time jump between her first encounter with a vampire to her as a powerful operative in the vampire-hunting organization. In all honesty, if I had to pick one, I’d rather see her rise to her current rank than watch her prove she still has her edge.

The second half of the book is Willow doing vampire research and talking to other hunters about who the “Rogue” is and what mysterious things the bad vampires are doing, which isn’t in and of itself so bad if it wasn’t just an exchange of information every time. We don’t learn anything new about any characters involved, we just learn the vampires are mysterious, which we already know.

But here’s a couple of things I liked; I liked the fact that Willow actually hunts vampires (it’s impressive how many vampire-hunting stories feature vampire hunters who just talk about hunting vampires and brooding over their dead family) and I loved Regi-Com Ashe.
Dolly Parton as a vampire hunter is something everyone should experience.

This was a paranormal thriller about a girl wanting to be a vampire hunter and not fully understand what she would be losing to do so. Willow wants to follow in her father's footsteps, especially after loosing her mother to the vampires. She just goes by it the wrong way and finds herself in a bad situation.

I liked the whole vampires and humans live together under a truce. There is always a rogue vampire not wanting to follow the rules and cause alot of trouble, which happens in this book. I will say Willow is stubborn and doesn't give up. When her father goes missing she will do whatever it takes to get him back even if it means teaming up with a vampire prince.

This book had a unique take on vampires, the different ways they could bite a person, the different classes of vampires such as halfbloods, blackblood, pureblood, sire, and dhampyr. It made the book more interesting.

~3-3.5 Stars. I really enjoyed the world in this book. The vampires have their own lands and the humans have separate ones. The border towns, separate cultures, tentative truces—all very interesting!

It took me awhile to get into it, in part because the chapters starting in first person POV and then changing to third POV for the rest threw me off. It didn’t happen every chapter, which threw me off again. It was a style choice others might enjoy, it just wasn’t one that worked for me personally.

Overall, the story did entertain me! There were some cool world-building elements, especially. I just wanted a little more from the story itself. I’d consider reading the next book in the series to find out what happens with the Rogue and his plans.

Clean, no foul language and an immersive plot

Willow is an awesome led. I love how she was thrown into navigating the shadiness of vampire society. There is no romance, but a shaky friendship developing between Willow and a vampire. The book seemed so straight forward, then bam! Whoa I didn't expect that, but in a good way. I'm really looking forward to the sequel. I hope such excellent writing won't take too long.
