Mary Montero's love of all things Titanic comes across clearly in this book. While obviously written with children in mind, I heartily recommend it to anyone interested in first-hand accounts of historic events. "Voices of the Titanic" brings to life the stories of a variety of people from all walks of life who found themselves on board that fateful voyage of the Titanic, from Captain Edward John Smith to 9 year old Frank Goldsmith, a 3rd class passenger who was traveling with his family. With brief biographies and contemporary photographs, I found this book simultaneously heartbreaking and fascinating.

Most of us have been intrigued by the stories of the Titanic and its sinking ever since the ship was discovered in 1985 and then once the movie was made in 1997. Our children may not have as much information about the history of the ship, the people who perished, and those who survived. The last living survivor died in 2009. This book, written for middle-grade readers, makes sure the stories from the Titanic are still shared so that we never forget.

The Titanic was the second of three ships that were part of the White Star line. Unfortunately, all three of the ships sunk, but the Titanic was the most tragic with over 1,500 passengers perishing on the ship. The majority of those who died were third-class passengers. This book shares stories from the crew, third-class passengers, first-class passengers, and even the story of the Captain of the ship.

The book opens with a background of the building of the ship and its maiden voyage. There are stories of passengers who chose not to take the ship including one due to an omen after seeing a mother cat remove all her kittens during one of the stops. Information about the other two ships, the Olympic and the Britannic was also shared.

One of the most fascinating stories for me was that of Violet Constance Jessop. She was a member of the crew and served as a maid/housekeeper to the first-class passengers on the ship. She had also been on the Olympic when it crashed and then again survived the sinking of the Britannic during WWI as a nurse when it crashed. She wrote many memoirs of her time on the three ships and was dubbed “Miss Unsinkable”.

If you’ve seen the movie “The Titanic” then you might remember the band that played on the deck while passengers were rushing to board the lifeboats. That was a true part of the story. Montero wrote about Wallace Henry Hartley, a violinist that played for first-class passengers. During the sinking, the group of musicians chose to play joyous songs to lift the hearts of those who were frantic on the ship. They played on and went down with the ship. Hartley’s body was found ten days later with his violin and case strapped to his body. The violin was auctioned off for $1.6 million in 2006.

These and so many other fascinating stories are shared including the Chief Baker, the youngest passenger, and the wealthiest passenger. There is also a glossary at the end of the book that includes all the ship-terms that kids might not know. There are photographs of the people and parts of the ship as well to keep the kids interested.

I downloaded this book through Kindle Unlimited and I thought it was great. We recently visited a Titanic Exhibition in Devon and got to see a few of the items that had been recovered from the seabed after she sank.

It is well laid out and the features are perfect, each main passenger had a chapter to tell their tale. Some are more distressing than others, I loved that the mix is there in that there are stories selected from passengers though each class and the crew too.

The book brings home the impact that the sinking had on some of the survivors in that one could not bear to be near noisy sports stadiums as the noise brought back the memories of the tragedy and the people in the water, one of which was his own father.

The book has the stories told by some of the more famous passengers and a lot that you won’t have heard of unless you have taken the time to read some of the other books available, and I will admit, that there are an awful lot of books but those focussed primarily on children are not at numerous.

My daughter is 5 and she is addicted to the Titanic. She loves the story, the history and reading about the people – as a mum it was a book I could read to her without issue – she has seen parts of the film so we knew who the baker was that held on at the end as the ship took her final plunge. We knew the old couple that went to their state room and in the film they are together holding hands on their bed. The book does a fantastic job of bringing the story to life.

It is 5 stars from me for this, it is an excellent book. It has a lot of impact and I loved the mix of pictures and fact sections too – very highly recommended!

I've been fascinated with the Titanic since I was an elementary school aged kid. In 5th grade I did a presentation on the Titanic as a class project. At the time Titanic was gaining some popularity because the Titanic movie had come out a few years prior. However, all the books I read back then for my report were not as detailed and fascinating as this one. I really appreciate that this book covers the accounts of many people on the Titanic from all backgrounds. The pictures in the book are great as well. The author shares how in love she has been with Titanic and how she wanted students and kids to fall in love with learning about the Titanic as well. Her book clearly was a product of love and that's what makes it so great and a joy to read.

I picked this up to read while spending the day waiting for various appointments to see how well it was written. I was very pleased and impressed! A nice layout for kids, easy to read, with a glossary to help them with any words that might be new to them. It was actually very enjoyable, and I learned a few things that were even new to me! Highly recommended for young readers, or for bored adults waiting in crowded lobbies!

I received a free digital copy from Callisto Media and am providing a voluntary review.

This is a well written history of the sinking of the Titanic. I enjoyed the pictures and the layout of the book, which describes the journey and tragic sinking of the Titanic. The book also provides interesting facts about the passengers and events that occurred on board up to and after the tragedy. There was at least one story I hadn't heard before about a missing key and how it could have changed everything.

This book was written as a Children's History Book, but adults will enjoy it too. I know I did.

I have read about the Titanic quite a bit, but these personal stories made the story come to life. There are individual stories and accounts from first, second, and third-class passengers, a lookout, wireless operators, the captain, a baker, director, science teacher, the youngest and wealthiest passengers, captain of the Carpathia (rescuing ship), and finally the famous "Unsinkable" Molly Brown. History of the Titanic, presented person-to-person.
Thanks, Callisto publishing, for the review copy!

Excellent book. Well told and researched. I didn’t realize until the book arrived that it was actually written for kids. But as an adult, I loved it. It includes stories from numerous survivors as well as photos, short stories, interesting information, and passenger and ship demographics. If you had even a slight interest about the Titanic sinking…this book will spark your imagination. It made me want to watch the movie again.

I received a free copy of the book through a contest.
It is written for kids but I and my mother-in-law both really enjoyed it. It has first hand accounts of survivors and also people lost in the tragedy. I loved all the different stories and the fun facts throughout the book. My only wish is that it was longer!
