Christmas ushers in snowstorms, fruitcake, and a horde of Santa’s naughty elves…
No place is more perfect for the winter holidays than the charming mountain town of Estes Park. As the Cozy Corgi Bookshop and Bakery glistens with lights and garlands, Winifred Page allows the seasonal merriment to brush away all worry and fear. Watson, her grumpy corgi, is about as far from stressed as possible—after all, with the holiday baking, delectable crumbs are everywhere.
Estes Park’s new Christmas store is chosen to receive exclusive rights to sell a much-coveted collection of tiny elf figurines, but not everyone is thrilled, especially not the owner of the original Christmas shop. Bickering between local merchants is nothing new and doesn’t dampen the Christmas cheer or holiday glee. However, when nightly break-ins begin to occur, Santa himself is caught in the act, Fred and Watson are pulled away from the bookshop to investigate the holiday mayhem.
Unfortunately, while Santa keeps a list of nice and naughty children, he’s allowed his elves to have free rein, and there’s nothing nice about them…
(This culinary cozy mystery includes a recipe for honestly delicious fruitcake.)

"Evil Elves (Cozy Corgi #15)" by Mildred Abbott has a Santa breaking into business to leave a Christmas elf and a piece of coal or a fruit cake. Winifred (Fred) starts looking into who is acting as Santa since it is disturbing to have someone break into your business, even if that's all they're doing. The death part of this mystery doesn't happen until around halfway through the book. Are they the work of the same person or is there more than one mystery to solve?
Now, where I live, the elves that kept getting left during the break ins would be called gnomes or Tomte/Nisser/Tonttu (depending on the Scandinavian country your family came from) based on the descriptions given and the cover. They're all over the place here and hat color does designate it as being an elf or gnome. They're all gnomes if they look like what's described in the book/on the cover. A Santa elf, for us, would be more like what the elf on a shelf elf looks like or think the elves in the Disney Santa Clause movies. Still a cute idea if done during business open hours rather than breaking in and if everyone one got a bakery item rather than some getting coal. Could be a fun chamber of commerce was of highlighting local business over the holiday season. Who has the elf/gnome now?!?!
In book 15 it is Christmas Time. Someone or someone's are dressing up like Santa and going in stores and houses and either giving out coal or fruitcake and a little elf. Then it esculates to violence. 3 friends Jake and Finnegan and Trevor are very respectful men and Have had pasts. Marty Finnegan uncle trying to help his nephew get a job at Santa Cause where it is a magical Christmas shop. There is a another Christmas Shop that are both competing with each other. Fred ( Winifred) from Cozy Corgi and Leo park ranger are getting very cozy. Even Katie has eyes for a man that wife died. This is a cool book 15. All the magical of Christmas in this story. Mildred Abbot never disappoints in her stories all are excellent of the way she describes places. Will read till the end of this series
Mildred Abbott is quite a talented writer of cozey mystery mayhem and murder. The two mane characters a single woman Fred that owns a book shop with her cantankerous Corgi Watson. They are surrounded with an assortment of what some would say fruit cakes for family ,as well as a colorful array of friends and small town community to find themselves involved with all kinds of mischief , mayhem and intrigue to get into. Unfortunately for Fred and Watson Christmas is no different.Forchunetly for us cozey mystery readers " Evil Elves" is a fabulous holiday season mystery to enjoy at any time of year. So acquire " Evil Elves " today so you yourself can enjoy it as much as I have. 😀 Kat
A Christmas mystery with some rude elves and a mysterious Santa breaking into stores. Fred still has that letter from Branson and it takes Susan of all people to hammer home the games that Branson is still playing with her, causing her to doubt Leo.
I’m so behind on this series! I’ve been struggling to find a book to keep my attention and came across this series and remembered I needed to catch up. If you like cozy mysteries, or if you’ve never tried them, you should definitely give this one a chance!
I swear this series gets better and better with each book. I probably could have finished this book in a few days if it hadn't been for a bad cold. I still enjoyed it so much. I love the story line and it's interesting that as I read the series, some characters that I used to like I don't like as much and other characters are growing on me. I can't wait to read the next one.
I loved this installment of the Cozy Corgi Mystery. Right mix of holidays, mystery, character development. Made me smile and want to read in one sitting (even though I couldn't).
The little mountain town of Estes Park, Co is decorated for Christmas.Right now almost the entire community is at a Christmas party given at Christmas Cottage by a local shop owners Gentry Farmer And wife Susanna & teen daughter Noelle, with Beagle Snoopy . If we peak in to see what's going on we will find all our friends getting in the usual troubles. Winifred 'Fred ' in her trademark broomstick skirt and her beloved sidekick Corgi Watson have arrived without handsome boyfriend 'Smokeybear' Leo the park ranger, because he is visiting his family for the holidays. Aughh. This is what has Fred off focus. A few months ago someone gave Fred a manilla envelope with a name on the front-Leo. Telling her it was every thing about him she didn't know! Is this true or to mess Her mind? She has been mulling it over-burn it or read it. Not a soul knows about it yet. She hid it in her closet after the murder at the Pasta Thyme restaurant month's ago,Halloween. She is putting it out of her mind or trying to. Champagne toast by the owner's,everyone has a flute of bubbly. Watson has a kindred spirit in Snoopy, because they both love to sleep by the fire side. Katie wants to get us to Bret a Santa Gagnon Watson for an adorable photo. After the last outfit, he was a grumpy guy for days in the Sherlock Holmes outfit. Fred is not going to try. Even if it will be a fantastic photo. Just a hat Katie says not an entire outfit. Watson a very headstrong Corgi will hold an attitude against you complete with cold shoulder, eye glaring and exerting his grumpy stubborn attitude when he feels treats should be more forth coming things won't be pretty. It Will be hysterical. Step father Barry, 1 of 3 favorite humans to Watson is here by the hor d'oeuvres on no he says they have bacon and it's murder! Watson may not care and Katie says it's delicious murder. Katie is Fred's best friend and business partner at Cozy Corgi Book Store, Katie Pizzolato is upstairs making magic in the Bakery. Fred's Uncle Percival and his husband Gary are here. Uncle Percy is ~eye rolling~ Fred for her choice of clothes. Fred thought it was time to leave and someone wanted to escort her.The guy who does Cozy Corgi t-shirts is who. Things begin.
The book is Fabulous, I loved it. I read it in in 1 day- 2 sittings taking a break for a salad. I loved it!! Fun Holiday book but certainly a read that is flexible to be read any time of year! ~ Note: before you go on, Some thing's are clues you might not want to read. Not complete spoilers BUT getting close.
I loved when Fred and Officer Susan Green and Watson get together. Oh my gosh. So SO so funny. In the middle of mystery and murder with the new Jr officer Campbell Clifton Cabot who is constantly babbling he is the utmost annoyance to Officer Susan creating the most hysterical scenes. Like a good movie I can already Quote some of them they are so "Relatable". I read pages several times because they were so much fun. Encounters are fabulous withOfficer Susan and Jr Officer Cabot when arriving at a scene. Also, lines of Officer Susan's with Fred and Watson, she actually calls on them to work together in her glum, 'I rather not be talking to you' way making it even more fun from this harden gladiator type officer way she has. We have many new characters and a few new store's so this is great as a stand alone for new reader's. You don't need to know anything going into this book. If you do you will recognize your usual suspects I mean favorites. The main street shops and owner's. Owner's of Cabin and Hearth, Anna and poor husband Carl, their oh no- diaper wearing dog Winston, whom Anna adores. Paulie is owner of Paws and his Beloved Corgi dog's Flotsam and Jetsam. The way the elves are worked in was a wonderful surprise to me! I am going to say look for Santa's Naughty and Nice list and what gifts get left from Santa. That's my clue. I actually started a list. It is a fun fascinating mystery --> you need to stay on your toes. The envelope comes up, in a way I was Shocked to see!! What is going to happen? Oh a news flash Fred is in trouble :- ( a coffee shortage for her -no dirty chais. Now that's real troubles find out why. So much goes on. Now you see why I read it in 1day . I love this series. I have them all.
I received an advanced ARC copy for an honest review.

EVIL ELVES With little reading time as the year draws to a close, I was happy to see a new book from Mildred Abbott. Knowing her characters’ noses for mystery AND delicious treats washed down with a cup of dirty chai and of course an all-natural dog bone treat for Watson, I immediately knew this would be nothing like the saccharine, candy cane, improbably sweet Holiday books which seem to flood my in-box from Halloween on. Luckily, I was right. Fred begins the season with a Holiday Kick-Off party at the Christmas Cottage, one of the two competing Christmas shops in Estes Park. The festive store is filled with family and neighboring store owners. No doubt that the Santa’s Cause store will have to entertain with even more flair, as the Christmas Cottage offers free flowing champagne and tiny delicious finger foods. Leaving the party, Fred and Watson join Joe Singer, owner of Rocky Mountain Imprints, who insists on special delivering an order of Cozy Corgi logo items to the book shop. Finding the door ajar, Fred holds Watson’s lead tight and Ron goes into the shop first, exclaiming “Just what I thought, AGAIN!” Sitting on top of the ornate vintage cash register was a little elf. Nothing more than a huge beard, with two green felt shoes poking out from beneath the mass of white fluff as a beard and an equally oversize pointed green hat appeared to be smashed so low it covered the elf’s entire face to his tiny pink nose. Next to the elf lay a small loaf of fruitcake wrapped with a ribbon.
This becomes the theme of this fantastic Holiday Novel. Charming little elves are left in the local businesses with interesting ‘gifts’ accompanying the elves. When the whimsical elves turn to property destruction and murder. Fred and Watson have a winter mystery to solve. This is a wonderful book for your Holiday season. There is also Katie’s recipe for a delicious fruit cake, and you will never miss the candy cane fluff of the typical holiday read!!!
Review by Gloria Lakritz Sr Reviewer and Review Chair 5*****Stars Name of Book: Evil Elves Series: Cozy Corgi Mysteries #15 Author: Mildred Abbott Publisher: self published Release date: Dec 16th 2019 Page Count: Genre: cozy mysteries Rated: all
I am terribly sorry Ms Abbott life got in the way……I read this book immediately upon receipt….. BUT to explain…. with Christmas shopping, wrapping, baking, cooking and celebrating; then New Years and all, today is my first chance to celebrate your 15th novel in my favorite Corgi Mystery Series. So, celebrate I shall with a 5 star for you !
It is Christmas in Estes Park, and we are finding that we have a holiday prankster in town. After leaving a Holiday Party at the Christmas Cottage one of the two Christmas shoppes in town, Winifred walks into her bookstore with Joe Singer another shop owner and her stealthy corgi Watson. It is there she finds her front door unlocked with a surprise on her counter ext to her register. It’s a small green elf, white beard and all; lying there and next to him a small fruitcake tied up in a bow! So the mystery continues, some getting fruit cake some getting coal….then some getting dead!
Again we are faced with many sides to Ms. Abbott’s mystery. Winifred has many things not yet sorted. But when Officer Susan calls and asks her to come and bring the flea bag,Winifred is on the case!
Again can not say enough about this very entertaining series….If you haven’t started it….you should give yourself a treat!
Okay the series has been good but the last few books might just have lost a bit of Sparkle. However it's back! Bigger and better than before. Our FMC is still torn over the envelope she received about Leo. Christmas is coming and she's missing Leo who had to go home for an early Christmas with his family. However a new mystery rears it's head. Someone has been breaking into stores and leaving an elf figurine with either a slice of fruitcake or a piece of call. Talk about the Elf on a shelf! It seems harmless but events soon spiral. Paulie is left tied up, Kate's bakery is trashed and a body is found in one of the Christmas stores. Is she right in thinking that the dead man, the maker of the Elves and a rather nasty specimen working with Daphne are responsible. Add in Leo's return, young men with police records, trash talk and Susan showing her nicer side. Will they find out who and why? Well thought out and executed plus it has a nice steady pace that hooks you. Plus the characters are showing their more vulnerable side in this one whilst Watson (although still grumpy) is also not going to put up with any shenanigans against the humans under his protection. Regardless if the threat is animal, vegetable or mineral!
Another day in Estes Park, another mystery for Fred to resolve… and of course, there is still that mysterious envelope from Branson, hidden away but not forgotten. Evil Elves starts out quite cheery, very much in keeping with the holiday season, but then the atmosphere gradually becomes more threatening and what started out as an almost playful elfish mystery turns dark and dangerous. I was very surprised at the reveal of the culprit(s), didn’t see that coming at all. I’m rooting for Fred and Leo, they seem so perfect for each other and had some amazing moments together. As always so much of the charm of these books also comes down to the wonderful vibe of the town and all its inhabitants. It’s always great to see how all the secondary characters are doing. I have a soft spot for officer Cabot, he means so well poor dear. I must confess I’ve fallen quite hard for this series, and mostly I blame Watson for that. I never knew I wanted a Corgi in my life until I took a chance on these books
This is one of my favorite installments in the Cozy Corgi Mysteries. Fred and Watson, along with the usual Estes Park quirky characters, are trying to figure out who is dressing as Santa and leaving elf figurines in different businesses and homes. (I feel more concerned with the breaking and entering than the townspeople!) This is a nice change for Fred, who is more accustomed to trying to solve murders around town. Of course, nothing can ever be that easy, and Fred and Detective Susan Green work together better than they have before to try to solve the latest crimes. I love this group of wacky people and pups, and I am so happy every time a new mystery in the series is released. I love seeing Katie, Leo, Fred's family, and all the local business owners. Fred's corgi Watson rules the town in so many ways, but he does have some pretty good canine company. This is such a fun series, and I recommend it to those who love both mysteries and dogs.
Well it's really a crazy Christmas with someone dressed as Santa has been breaking into stores and a few houses leaving little elves with either a loaf of fruitcake or a lump of coal! The whole town is in an uproar though when Paulie, the pet shop owner is left tied up in a chair and tagged overnight in his office. The Katie's bakery is maliciously destroyed. As Fred and Watson try to solve these different attacks, the next case ends up in murder!! The young man killed has a criminal record and a nasty attitude so the list of suspects is long. When Fred and Watson finally sold the murder, it is a real surprise!
The Cozy Corgi series never ceases to entertain me! At the beginning of the story I felt like this one just might be a lighter, whimsical mystery but just when I’m settled into figuring out who is spreading Christmas spirit all over Estes Park, things take a darker twist. Still I loved all of my favorite characters and their unique personalities popping up throughout the story and the reminder of the strong foundation between Katie, Leo and Fred. This has to be one of my favorite series with the humor, love, twists and strong sense of family.
Fred and Winston are enjoying the Christmas holiday season in Estes Park, Colorado. There is a mystery though. Residences and businesses are being broken in by an unknown Santa Claus, Santa is leaving stuffed elfs and either coal, or fruitcakes to the various targets.
Everyone is charmed, until, one vendor is not only vandalized but harmed in the break in. Fred is further alarmed when Katie is attacked and her business destroyed.
This is a great book. A clever and unusual mystery and also a reminder of what Christmas is about.
What starts as a harmless prank with a store being broken into and elves and fruitcake or coal being left turns into vandalism, assault, and murder. Now, Fred calls upon her intellect to discover who the culprit is. And, when she finally reaches the truth, it leaves her heartbroken. You can tell Mildred has a way with mysteries. Her heroine is quirky and brave and her dog is everything a Corgi should be. The plots are ingenious and convoluted. Her murderers only human. This is one of my favorite series.
This was a very entertaining and engrossing book. The main characters were interesting and likable. Christmas hijinx gets out of control and someone ends up dead. The main character figures out who did it. I loved that the Corgi was front and center. Most authors just mention the dog when there is some action with it, but not in this series which is great. The looks and the attitude of the Corgi described by the author really brought him to life. If you like dogs and/or cozy mysteries definitely give this book a try.
Despite not reading this book at the right time of year, I really enjoyed this book. It was a darkly delicious Christmas mystery and a first that featured Katie a little more strongly, although she always adds a distinct flavor to every edition. As always, I love that Watson always adds his own particular corginess to every book, grumpy but so adorable. Having my own corgi, I know that feature all so well. I love every new mystery even if it means yet another murder will occur in this idyllic price of paradise. I hope they never end.
YES, this was just what the series needed 15 books in! What started as a fun little mystery ended up turning nefarious. However, while there were a few books previously where I was questioning how much I liked Fred, this absolutely redeemed her for me.
The way she barged in, guns blazing, to protect Katie? INCREDIBLE! As soon as she slapped the shit out of Finnegan, I couldn't help the little cheer that left my mouth, this was what I needed from Fred!
Amazing book, probably one of my favorites so far, looking forward to reading the next one!

Another amazing mystery!❤️. This one was focused on three bullies and the way they treated people in Estes Park! Christmas time and two of the bullies would break into homes or stores and leave an evil elf with either a piece of coal or a small piece of fruitcake! One of the bullies that the uncle was trying to help get his life better was really bad to Paulie and Katie! Things got out of hand and one of the bullies got murdered! In the end justice was done and everyone was able to have a great Christmas!
I say the same thing whenever I read a Cozy Corgi book. How could it get any better? Once again, this one is wonderful. Fred is in the middle of what appears to be Christmas hijinks until there is a murder. I found it one of the deeper novels in the series, and a cool open ended question about Fred's boyfriend remains unanswered. I find reading any series in order helps a reader understand the small details.
Fred and Watson ate back on a case of the Christmas Elves theft and subsequent gifts of a lump of coal or fruit cake. Then an assault takes place, followed by destruction of the bake shop and finally a murder. A wonderful Christmas is taking its time arriving. Recommend Series.
Main characters Fred and Watson are at it again to solve another mystery! At first it doesn't seem too difficult or serious...then things start to turn deadly. If you read the last book, Precarious Pasta, you will have a partial answer to the question "Will Fred open that envelope?" No spoilers here, just read it!
Why would anyone be ugly to Katie? Some people don’t take advantage of a second chance just continue to mess up. Susan is actually improving her attitude and I like the change. The similarities in Corgis is so cool. My corgi is so much like Watson, from begging for treats, grumpiness and picking his favorites. Just love him! Jo
This one is good. Just what I needed to help put me in the Christmas mood. I have to say that I was surprised that it took Fred so long to find a body in this one. I love all of Watson's Shameless Shedding. He's too cute. All of the characters are always so likeable.
Mildred Abbott has given us another wonderful read. Follow all the main characters as they solve a Christmas mystery as the month of December rolls along. As always, Watson, Katie, and Leo lend support and food to Fred as they solve the puzzle. And the recipe really is excellent! I will miss The Rolling Pin bakery when I visit Denver again.
