A medical doctor's journal
This wonderful book of Dr. Poovannan makes us realize how little the rest of India knows about the North East - culturally , geographically and politically ! The tragedy of war, which claimed hundreds of soldier's even before the start is an eye opener. At the same time the CO of JAKLI who respected and took care of his soldiers equally touched my heart. Also noteworthy are the tiny newsbites, tidbits about the Buning Valley (Switzerland of Manipur) !! The most captivating part is the one where Navlesh had been ordered by the CO to perform the poojas in the absence of the priest. Of course the subtle mentions of certain events in Gujarat as well as in The capital of India have been inserted nearly without causing any hurdles in the narration. The whole time I was reading this book, I was imagining how Dr.Poovannan 's memories from his days as a army physician can translate into another MASH show !

North East always evokes sensation by capturing the imagination about its Virgin lands and primitive people or on the other hand an extreme fear about its head hunting tribes or the terrorists. Often the is also conflicting news about human rights violation and speeding l aggression highlighted by activists like Irom Sharmila.
What is usually not spoken about is the view from the POV of a defense personnel, that too a medical officer with secular values.
This book brings out a closer look at the pressure North East is going through with a flawed inception during the independence, rightly implied as a transverse lie and how their culture starkly contrasts with popular Indian culture, because of which they are discriminated.
The current state of strife due to insurgency and counter insurgency tearing their society apart is strongly registered by this narration.
What the author is also bringing out is the deep racial and caste lines even within the defense forces and how it impacts the relationships. This he notes with a critical eye possible by his rationalist upbringing.
What could have made a better impact would be in improved narration and controlled characterization with which this book could actually be a longer, memorable and more engaging one.

John Rongmei - The Unsung Hero
This short novel is based upon few pages of Army Doctor's diary. It travels around North East of India. I enjoyed this novel thoroughly. It recalled my college days memories as I were part of NCC also I went for North East India as part of NCC camp. From the beginning Dr Munusamy express his anxiety about transverse lie and one would expect something going to happen with that while reading but there is suspense lies for the reader. Many technical words are there both Medical and Army related which made me slow nevertheless I would love to read it again.

Not to miss
This book based on personal experiences of Dr.Munusamy .Honest account of events and his feelings are touching. Many of us wouldn't share our difficulties faced during our carrier but author did.
Army designations are quite difficult to catch up, some of paragraphs are long and it is difficult to hold on to the story.
Methodology of story line and narration is very good
It is a joy to read.
I would recommend this book

Journey of an officer
Naming the protagonist as Munsamy itself is an act of rebellion. The author continues to give as a slice of life in the arduous journey of an army officer and a doctor. Looking to read more of his memoirs in the future.

Amazing Read!
Breezy and enjoyable narration. At many places the emotional connection of munusamy with fellow country men is brought out very well.Waiting to watch it in Amazon prime as a mini series.

Dravidian doctor's view of army life
Well written book by the author
As a person from southern state expresses his views in a simplest way about army life and about the plight of people in northeastern states

Instead of being a novel, the book has a feel of autobiography. The book talks about the internal conflict of a man who is torn between being a doctor and man in uniform at the same time. The book touches some of the unknown realities about armed forces. Book is quite interesting. But could have been lot better.
