“Because life doesn’t always go according to plan; that’s just the way of the world: there’s no such thing as perfection in this world.”

Impression after Reading
Damn, where do I even begin? To be completely honest, I’m writing this review just so I can warn people that are going into this book. No, this isn’t a horror or a simple mystery book as much as I wished it was. It started out interesting, not going to lie, but it quickly descended into this convoluted, complicated, directionless shock story with multiple perspectives just to add to the confusion. Not to mention some very, and I mean heavy emphasis on the very, vulgar activity that feels like it was added just to add to the shock value. Need I also say that we got a perspective of a cat and a mouse in this?

The Story
Okay, so just a quick recap of the beginning, it started out just like your typical mystery story by introducing the main character, Mrs. Chan. Only this time, we got a cat as our narrator. I first thought that hey, this was a pretty interesting twist on a mystery story. Oh how naive I was. The first chapter basically covered the basics of most mystery stories, introducing the characters, playing out the murder/mystery incident, raises some questions to the readers—just your average progression in the genre.

But boy, it devolves fast. Almost every chapter we keep switching to a different or even an entirely new perspective. It also keeps changing the setting and time so the pacing really feels all over the place. I think the worst part is having to read that BDSM chapter with some very descriptive details on the prose. Even though I have read worse, I genuinely need an eye bleach after reading that.

The Character
I genuinely don’t understand how you can write characters so uninteresting. Every dialog and interaction feels like a slog, and to add to that, none of them are even likeable. Even the cat, the freaking cat, manages to make me frustrated with how it acts. I also fail to see how most of the characters really contribute to the plot. They were just there to give some tragic backstory to the main character to add to the overall surprise value. If there was symbolism to these characters, which I doubt, they were completely overshadowed by the cheap shock narrative throughout the story.
