For fans of Emily Windsnap and Maybe A Mermaid comes the second book in the I Turned Into a Mermaid Series! Get ready to laugh in this funny, heartfelt coming-of-age story, perfect any young mermaid fan. It's not easy being half-mermaid. Just ask Molly Seabrook. She sprouts a fish tail whenever she's near water (NOT ideal when you live in a seaside town). She still has to deal with having the World's Most Embarrassing Family. And she has to lie to everyone about her identity. Even her best friend, Ada. Then the Waverley twins arrive in town. Molly's thrilled to discover that they're secret mermaids too! But Molly's mom forbids her from seeing them… Is something fishy going on? The I Turned Into a Mermaid series is the perfect fit if you're looking
Y'all know by now that Laura Steven is one of my all time favourite authors and human being on this earth. And if ya don't know, now ya know (Hamilton pun intended). I'm literally trash for almost everything this amazing woman has written and her middle grade series is no exception. And then I turned into a mermaid was one of my favourite books of last year and the moment this sequel was announced I did a little happy dance in my living room. It's therefore literally no surprise that I once again loved a book written by Laura. But without much further ado here are my opinions/thoughts about book 2:
Myla is honestly such a mood. Also naming your pet rabbit Boudica is just iconic.
"In fact, my curiosity often wreaks havoc with my moral compass. I'm happy to bend the rules if it means discovering something new." - it honestly feels like I'm hearing Hermione Granger talk.
Eddie is literally a national treasure. He is such a sweet and precious boy. .
Steve be like: you guys are at least 50% weirder outside of school. Eddie: only fifty? That means we must try harder. - which is honestly one big MOOD.
Why did the viking buy a second-hand boat? Because he probably couldn't a-fjord a new one😂😂😂 apparently I'm a sucker for bad jokes.
I find everything you say funny, melissa. - oh molly, oh molly. One day the sass will kill you.
The waverley twins are definitely sirens.
Also, how did I manage to ignore the fact that every Seabrook person has a name that starts with the letter m. Molly, minnie, myla, melissa, Margot, murielle, mum😂
Also, I have such a feeling that the Seabrooks are like important peeps (well fishes) in the mermaid world. And that mother dearest ran away from that world cause she was like fuck all those bullshit etiquettes and I'm going to be a human.
Now the real question is how are snails reproduced?😂😂
I'm actually friendshipping felicity and molly now.
Sassy myla is becoming my everything now. Like; mermaids no likey sirens. Sirens no likey mermaids, capiche? THAT'S SOOO FREAKING SASSY.
Struggle with studying the Chinese menu.😂😂 oh molly oh molly.
Myla and Amy are truly perfect for each other.
That ending though. Such a cliffhanger and a very unfair one. Also I was right about everything 😂and I'm also shipping Eddie and molly now, apparently.
So y'all should just read this amazing, adorable, hilarious and diverse middle grade series about mermaids. Seriously how can anybody say no to mermaids? I for sure can't. Also y'all should read Laura's other books too since she's a worldwide treasure and her books are aaaaaa-mmm-aaaaa-zzzzzz-iiii-nnn-gggg! ALSO I NEED THE SEQUEL LIKE YESTERDAY.
Excellent. I mean, when is Laura not excellent, but still. I think Sprog and I both actually enjoyed this even more than the first one. Some great developments in the story and setting up the potential for us to visit a very cool world and learn some interesting history and such in the next (I hope?) instalment. These characters are just gorgeous and I WANNA BE A SEABROOK OKAY?! We loved watching the friendships developing between Molly, Ada and Eddie, seeing a different side to Felicity, and getting closer to Myla. As always, there were plenty of laughs and fun, (including possibly too many prank ideas passed onto Sprog that I won’t be thanked for) and it was an absolute joy to read together. We have a new series lined up to start next (which I’m sure will be great) but I’ve gotta be honest, I don’t think either of us are ready to leave Little Marmouth yet. *cue Thor throwing his mug and shouting ANOTHER!*
It is a great sequel to the first book, hoping there is a third book next year! Please Laura Kirkpatrick if you are reading this please make a third book!
I thought that this book was amazing, I loved it and I really hope that she writes another book in this series because I think that at the end it is a cliffhanger.
Molly Seabrook has a problem. She wants to be a normal 13-year-old girl. But she can’t be. Molly, as well as all her sisters, are mermaids. Well, half-mermaids, on her mother’s side. So she can be perfectly fine, walking with her friends or at school, but if she accidentally gets too close to water, she transforms into a mermaid. And she can’t transform into a mermaid in public, because it’s a secret. She can’t even tell her best friend Ada, and keeping that big a secret from her best friend is wearing her down.
Molly should be happy. Ada has started going out with Penalty Pete, so they have finally infiltrated the popular table in the lunchroom. Now Molly gets to sit closer to Cute Steve, her crush, even though he’s going out with Felicity. And the new twins at school. Finn and Serena Waverley, are friends with some of the popular kids from Molly’s class, so she has a chance of getting closer to them too. Everyone wants to get closer to them and to score an invitation to their party during the holiday break.
But there are problems at home. Molly’s mom has told her daughters not to go to the sea anymore. She’s gone so far as to add an alarm to their usual trapdoor, so Molly is torn. Not only does this mean that she can’t go play with her sisters in the ocean anymore, and worse, Molly has the feeling that her mother is keeping a bigger secret from her. She thinks that there is a reason their mother is suddenly being so protective, especially when her mother warns her about the Waverley twins too, but Molly can’t figure out what it could be.
Between schoolwork, hanging out with Ada, helping out at the family fish and chip shop, spending time with her friend Eddie (and trying to figure out if they’re more than friends, or if he wants them to be more than friends, or if she wants that), and trying to figure out what her mother is keeping from her, Molly’s life is full. But as Molly digs into her mother’s secret, will that put her own secret in peril? Will everyone at school find out that she’s secretly a mermaid?
Don’t Tell Him I’m a Mermaid is the follow-up to And Then I Turned into a Mermaid, and it’s just as goofily charming and fun. Author Laura Kirkpatrick creates characters who are flawed but funny, human and heart-warming. Through it all—friendship and first love, sisters and secrets, tests and tails—Molly and her family and friends bring humor, charm, and style.
I have loved both of these middle grade books, with their compelling characters and cute stories. Laura Kirkpatrick has a way of bringing these novels to life and making them hard to put down. I recommend these books to imaginative middle grade girls who love fun stories that warm your heart.
Egalleys for Don’t Tell Him I’m a Mermaid were provided by Sourcebooks Early Reading Program, with many thanks.
This is a coming-of-age story about a family whose children realize they are mermaids when they turn 13. 13 is the age when they grow tails in the near vicinity of large bodies of water. Mermaids are allowed to live on land as long as they don't let anyone know they are mermaids. This obviously is problematic for a 13-year-old who is trying to fit in and not let her friends know her big secret. It turns out, she does even know all of her own family's secrets.
I read this story to check and see if it was appropriate for my 9-year-old daughter who picked it out at the library. The story is fun, but a little mature currently for my 9-year-old.
I listened to this on audio and kudos to the audiobook narrator, as well. This was just as enjoyable as the first book and made me grin repeatedly on my walk to work. I'm loving the side-characters - Eddie (of the ears), Felicity, Ada - as well as the Seabrook family and I really hope we get to see more of these characters as the plot thickens.
My 12 year old daughter loved the sequel every bit as much as the first and hopes the author writes 10 more books. lol. She's a lover of mermaids, and fashion, and art and sports and doesn't take herself too seriously. she loves the lighter note in the books and the not too much drama and being dyslexic she likes that these books are easier to read than many other books in this genre.
A fun, light-hearted sequel with hilarious characters and mythical creatures, right up my street. Molly finds out who her true friends are (& how to be a better friend in the process) as she navigates life, the normalcy of school and working at her family’s chip shop plus the added drama of turning into a mermaid at the most surprising of times!
God I loved this book!! It’s a brill sequel and it sets up a ton of world building, and I was full on cackling at some points. (Alsomollyisareallyrelatablecharacterespeciallyinthebutwheteshehastositoppositefitstevecosasimilarthinghappenedtomewhichisfunny!!) I cant wait for the next book!!!!!!!!!

This was a great sequel to an already amazing first installment. This does exactly what a proper sequel should do and opens the door for so many more stories. I can’t wait til we get a third book.
This book is Awesome! I love when you find out what the twins are. I cannot believe they are sirens!!! It is so good and I can’t wait to read the next one! =D

When two new students arrive, Molly becomes curious about her family history and the forbidden mermaid kingdom. There is a strong environmental message: ocean pollution woven into the story.
This was such a fun sequel to ‘And Then I Turned Into A Mermaid’. The twins had me very intrigued as to who they were and why the mum didn’t want the Seabrook sisters going anywhere near them. It was all very mysterious and the big reveal really shocked me. Plus the unexpected visitor at the end! Gutted that there aren’t any more books😭
Loved this. Properly funny, charming and full of fun. I loved being back in this world. Poor Molly with her turning-into-mermaid thing! She’s got such a lush family and I loved the messages about friendship in this! That ending though definitely leaves for more books...
