On orders from Mithril, Sousuke has been forced to abandon Kaname to focus on learning the secrets the Arbalest and the lambda driver. Meanwhile, Kaname—left to the care of a remote and anonymous intelligence agent—feels the threat from a mysterious pursuer drawing ever closer. Their challenges will lead them both to the tension-racked streets of Hong Kong, a city even more divided than the burgeoning couple's destinies. And a series of climactic showdowns will bring them to a reckoning with enemies old and new!
Shoji Gatoh ( 賀東招二), born on July 11, 1971, is a Japanese author from Shiga Prefecture, Japan. He is best known for the creation of the Full Metal Panic! series that included light novels, manga and anime. He is not only an author but also an anime scenarist, for example "The Day of Sagittarius" of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and three episodes of Lucky Star.
This volume is where the story took a more serious turn - with the conflict between Sousuke and Al beginning, the introduction of Amalgam and more people getting killed.
It's been so long since I last watched The Second Raid but I think I can clearly remember the main plot points. Once again, I appreciate all the little things and subtleties we get from the written media that may not have come across in the anime adaptation (or maybe they chose to not include them at all).
I'm so glad there wasn't that unhinged character (the weird one) in this novel, nor Sousuke's encounter with a Kaname-look-alike in Hong Kong. Why would they even show that anyway? I remember being bugged out when I watched that the first time.
If I remember correctly, the next volume will bring us to Invisible Victory. And I just realized how much material we still haven't seen adapted.
This is the continuation of the last book. And we finally see our main protagonist having a better control over the mechanic that he's using. He managed to defeat all his components and protect all he's comrades towards the end of the book. But the best part of the book, would most likely be the part whereby we started seeing more sparks appearing between the protagonists, which is the core of the whole novel...
3.5, overall a depressing volume with a good resolution. Chidori is not the focus, but she’s the best part of this instalment and her parts at the end elevate this up a notch in my estimation.
Really interesting to see how they deviated from this in the Second Raid anime. On the one hand, the two brothers part is brutally underwritten, even for a light novel. On the other, it’s a lot less ridiculously salacious than what we got in the anime.
While a bit lighter on comedy than the earlier volumes, this installation of the series makes up for it by ramping up both the romance and the action several notches. And the conversation between Sousuke and Al during the final battle is fantastic!
This one took me awhile to get through, but it was worth it! We got lots of character development for Sousuke and the Arbalest. Overall it felt a little rushed, but I think the FMP series tends to just be very fast paced. You can really tell the author was trying to make progress with the characters and try something different.
Reunited and it feels so good. Every book I read has me falling in love with this series more and more. The author really took me on an emotional roller coaster this go round but it was totally worth it.
Well, this is as far as I ever got in the anime. If they ever animated after this point, I haven’t seen it. All new stories from, here on out. I’m very excited for what’s to come!
This is one of the strongest volume of FMP! series, continuing the development from previous volume and concluded with a bang! and some lambda driver. You got political thriller, mystery, a deep dive on our man Sousuke, and awesome mech battle, what would you ask more?
Two volumes of this arc has been adapted into the well known FMP! The Second Raid anime by KyoAni, an excellent adaptation despite, and sometimes due to some changes and addition of anime-only contents.
