I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Lunn has no tickets on himself. He takes us into his confidence and reveals the battle within during his youth. I am sure many of us could identify with his insecurities, lack of direction and embarrassing moments during his transition from teen, to young man. Although somewhat younger than Lunn, I could identify with him because of the universal way he portrayed himself. I loved the anecdotes about people most Australians of a certain vintage have heard about. I was fascinated by his descriptions of how a newspaper was produced in those good old days in Brisbane and I could identify with how he finally learnt to play the game of bluff in life as we all must. It reminds me very much of what my father used to say: “keep smiling because it keeps them guessing.”
Anyone who grew up in Brisbane in the 50’s and 60’s would enjoy this book. It’s a good hearted and wholesome account of a good catholic boy from a good home who wants to do the right thing but also have some fun on the way. Good on you Hugh for being one of us.
