Перший український переклад шедевра класика англійської літератури Джеффрі Чосера (бл. 1343–1400). Це збірка історій, які розповідають одне одному прочани, що вирішили піти на прощу до гробниці святого Томи Бекета в Кентербері. Серед оповідачів — представники майже всіх верств тогочасного англійського суспільства, а їхні розповіді, вельми різноманітні за тематикою, влучно відображають триб їхнього життя. Це своєрідна енциклопедія життя середньовічного суспільства. Окрім блискучої неповторної іронії, властивої стилю цього шедевра, для нього характерні жвавість, нескінченна доброта, безмежна довіра до людей і надзвичайне уміння захоплюватися навіть жахливими рисами, які часом демонструють його герої. Книга проілюстрована фрагментами Еллесмерівського манускрипту 1410 року.

About the author

Geoffrey Chaucer (c. 1343 – 25 October 1400) was an English poet, author, and civil servant best known for The Canterbury Tales. He has been called the "father of English literature", or, alternatively, the "father of English poetry". He was the first writer to be buried in what has since come to be called Poets' Corner, in Westminster Abbey. Chaucer also gained fame as a philosopher and astronomer, composing the scientific A Treatise on the Astrolabe for his 10-year-old son, Lewis. He maintained a career in the civil service as a bureaucrat, courtier, diplomat, and member of parliament.
Among Chaucer's many other works are The Book of the Duchess, The House of Fame, The Legend of Good Women, and Troilus and Criseyde. He is seen as crucial in legitimising the literary use of Middle English when the dominant literary languages in England were still Anglo-Norman French and Latin. Chaucer's contemporary Thomas Hoccleve hailed him as "the firste fyndere of our fair langage" (i.e., the first one capable of finding poetic matter in English). Almost two thousand English words are first attested to in Chaucerian manuscripts. As scholar Bruce Holsinger has argued, charting Chaucer's life and work comes with many challenges related to the "difficult disjunction between the written record of his public and private life and the literary corpus he left behind". His recorded works and his life show many personas that are "ironic, mysterious, elusive [or] cagey" in nature, ever-changing with new discoveries.

Ох, ті чосерові прочани, побожні і грішні водночас. То смієшся з ними, то їх жалієш, то сердишся. Щодо перекладу на українську, то він просто неймовірний!

Ako se izuzme obilje intelektualne onanije, kojoj su skloni pisci Čoserovog vremena, i činjenica da npr. jedna švalja podjednako poznaje i tumači Ovidijeva dela kao i sveštenik, pravnik ili lekar, Kanterberijske priče su biser britanske srednjovekovne literature. Italijani su imali Bokača, Britanci - Čosera. Kroz aliteraciju i preko svojih protagonista, Čoser je preneo sva svoja interesovanja. Meni posebno zanimljivo je obilje narodne erotike, seksualne poskočice i prepoznatljiv engleski (crni) humor.

І це все ви зможете побачити у цій книзі: 24 оповіді (22 віршовані новелли та 2 прозових оповіді) майстерно написані англійським поетом Джеффрі Чосером, від лиця прочан, що прямували до Кентерберійського собору, щоб поклонитися мощам святого Томаса Бекета. Це історії про життя людей з різних верств населення, розповіді про героїчне минуле, та роздуми про справедливість і шляхетність. Кумедні історії про наповнене пригодами студентське життя. Тут ви знайдете все: від богословських роздумів на тему семи смертних гріхів до історій розпусних походеньок жінки з Бату (і не тільки її), та ще багато неймовірних, цікавих, але одночасно й доволі суперечливих, та я б сказав провокативних, розповідей.

Уже вдруге читаю "Кентерберійські оповіді", і знову з величезною насолодою. Український переклад Максима Стріхи - це просто шедевр.

Chaucer's _Canterbury Tales_ was the second work in the British Literature curriculum that I am working through, but I switched it around with the Sherlock Holmes book due to library restrictions and the like.

So anyway, the curriculum only assigned a few of the tales, which is apparently common in a overview course such as this one. I managed to get this version, which includes the Prologue, Knight's Tale, Miller's Tale and Pardoner's Tale. I hope to read more, because these were indeed very delightful.

I must have read some of these tales when I was in high school but really do not remember any of them. I know I can't have read the Miller's Tale, because that one was unforgettable and my favorite of all of them!

What I loved about these tales (at least the ones I have read) is that even in this early work, we can see the skill of an author who knows how to develop characters! The whole concept of the Canterbury Tales (in case you didn't know) is that there is this group of people on their way to Canterbury and they are going to compete in a contest to see who can tell the best story. So they are telling their stories.

This compilation includes the Prologue (a general introduction of all the characters/storytellers), the Knight's Tale, the Miller's Tale (with its prologue), and the Pardoner's Tale.

All of these are written in verse, different types of verse, which is also pretty cool.

All in all, I'm looking forward to the next volume! I'll probably do two volumes (maybe 6-7 tales in all) and call it a day.

Переклад просто неймовірний, мій низький уклін Стрісі, бо це чудово й неперевершено. Загалом, як і самі оповіді, а Жінка з Бату - це моє окреме кохання й захоплення, і, я впевнена, що саме її пролог я перечитуватиму.
