Claws Clause #2

Season of the Witch

Rate this book
He never wanted a mate. Until he found herand now she's all he wants.

In a world where paranormals live side by side with humans, everybody knows about Ordinance 7304: the Bond Laws. Or, as the Paras snidely whisper to each other, the Claws Clause—a long and detailed set of laws that bonded couples must obey if they want their union to be recognized.

Because it wasn’t already damn near impossible to find a fated mate in the first place. Now the government just has to get involved…

I won't—

Colton Wolfe has never liked witches.

There’s something about their magic. With a snap of a finger, a witch can cancel out his brute strength, razor-sharp claws, and inch-long fangs. It just isn’t natural. The Para-proof wards constructed by witches always made his fur itch, and it has bothered him for years how they betrayed all paranormals by selling their services to the highest bidders.

Then a witch nearly killed him and his dislike turned into full-blown hate.

His brother thinks his anger is unhealthy. Following his brush with near-death, Colt refuses to even talk to any packmates. Dodge, a ghost and his best friend, can’t even get through to him. Colt keeps himself confined to his workshop, shutting every one out. His wolf is just about rabid and he keeps his beast locked up tight.

His wolf wants its mate. Colt won’t admit it, but he does, too.

Only Shea is a witch.

And Colt hates all witches—

Doesn’t he?

I can't—

Shea Moonshadow is a healer first, a witch second. Considering her magic has a way of backfiring on her whenever she tries the simplest of spells, she sticks with what she knows will work. Her herbs and her poultices have never failed her before.

Now if she could only say the same about her brother.

Hudson is a Donor, a blood junkie who gives blood to vampires in exchange for a high only a dangerous Nightwalker can give. When he gets in over his head, he does what he’s always done: runs to Shea for help.

She can’t say no. She’s never been able to say no.

Not to Hudson.

Not to anyone.

And that’s how she finds herself pledged to a blood-bonding with an obsessed vampire.

When a dangerous group of Paras move in on Colt’s territory, going after humans and paranormals alike, the Grayson Police Department recruit him to take on the vicious Nightwalkers. If it’s bad enough that Colt gets saddled with an old enemy, it’s even worse when he discovers that his almost-mate is in it up to her adorable purple eyes.

He might’ve put off claiming his mate. But no way in hell is Colt—or his wolf—going to let some Nightwalker scum take Shea away from him.

Season of the Witch is the second full-length novel in the Claws Clause series. It’s the story of a grumpy wolf shifter hero and the sassy witch who has cast a spell over him. With danger, intrigue, and heart, watch as Colton submits to the one woman meant for him.

Oh boy, where to even begin.

I picked up this book without reading the first book in the series because the synopsis grabbed my eye. The premise of a witch with a mating bond to a shifter that rejects their bond but comes to her rescue when a dangerous vampire is trying to force a blood bond with her? Sign me up…but it did not live up to expectations.

First things first, what woman out here is reading romance/paranormal romance to read about a MMC that’s a virgin? Not me. I don’t even really like it when the FMC is a virgin; the whole I don’t know what I’m doing thing isn’t enticing or endearing, it’s annoying. So then, when three quarters of the book is leading up to them sleeping together, the whole encounter is bland. That’s not even mentioning the fact that they only sleep together because the FMC is put into a sort of heat brought on by the partial blood bond to the villain.

Second, the villain of the novel is almost entirely absent from it, only actually appearing about 4 times in the whole book. And then, when the MMC and the villain finally do throw down, the MMC rips his head from his body in less than ten minutes……snore.

Third, the naivety of both MC’s is grating. The MMC is trying to figure out how to make sure the FMC stays his mate and his best idea is a bonding license? Really? Because we all know how much a vampire king that’s taunting the police with dead bodies cares about the law? The FMC’s brother who is a blood donor calls her in the middle of the night to heal someone and then gives her a dress code that sounds like they’re going to a party and she doesn’t say no? Just ugh!
I definitely wouldn’t recommend this book to anyone I know and I definitely will not be continuing the series.

Each book of the Claw Clause series I've read so far (5 of them) works as a stand-alone, as well as part of a series. And does a strong job of reviewing the important parts of the last story ... at least twice, sometimes three times (sigh) - not word-for-word, so not as bad as I seen in other series. Plus one for the review, minus one for repetitive review as info-dumps instead of integrating into the story.

Book 2 of the series, Season of the Witch, is better than the last book - but that isn't hard because OMG the last book's "love courtship" was criminal-stalkerish. We do get to see the last couple in this book, since Colt is brother to Mad. And what I see here makes me hate book one (Hungry like a Wolf) even more, because the woman from the first book is only there to stroke the Alpha male and keep his temper under control - she isn't really allowed to be away from him in another room, she is so essential to keeping him on a functional even keel.

And now we are setting up another couple to end up in this situation? I prefer books 3 and 4, when we finally leave the EXCESSIVE possessiveness of the shifters.

Anyway, this book. Colt does such a moronic move as a partner in a police investigation, it ruined the book for me. That isn't getting even, that is setting up someone to be killed.

„Season of the Witch“ is the second book in the Claws Clause Series by Jessica Lynch. The story revolves around the relationship between Colt (Maddox brother, who also plays a pivotal role in the first book) and Shea, a witch.

Colt is a very volatile werewolf with an almost pathological disdain for witches. After almost have been killed by a witch, Colt goes into full lock down mode refusing to interact with almost anyone. As Colt has refused to claim a mate until now, he needs to face his trauma all by himself…. but as he meets Shea, he just knows… this is her one true mate. Of course, things could not be so easy… how could they? First Shea is a witch and on top of it… she has this little side issue of being blood-bonded to a vicious vampire.

Colt finds himself right in the center of a fight against the vampires, while helping the Grayson police to deal with the issue. Shea becomes a chip in the battle that Colt is not willing to bargain at any cost. Following Colt struggle between his instinct to mate Shea, his aversion to witches, and his dislike of vampires makes for a fun ride. Shea herself is a likeable character, stuck in a very bad situation, while trying to save her brother from himself, but rather than passively resign to her fate, she opts to keep on searching for a way out.

“Season of the Witch”, while part of the Claws Clause Series, can be read as a stand-alone story. It’s a fast-paced book, fill up with action, intrigue and twisted humor, with a generous dosage of adult romance.

Colton Wolfe doesn't want or need a mate, although Colt's wolf doesn't share his opinion. Colt can't believe his mate is his sworn enemy, a witch, of all things.

Shea Moonshadow is smitten from her first encounter with Colt (even after he drops a dresser on his ankle and breaks it) when she, unfortunately, learns Colt doesn't feel the same and has no intention of mating her. Instead, Colt further insults Shea by asking her to find a way to break the bond!

Meanwhile, Colt is approached by a Grayson county police officer, unbeknownst to him a witch, who recruits him to work with the task force to find the Nightwalkers who are leaving drained bodies in town. The only drawback is that Colt will have a human partner, his and Maddox's nemesis Adam Wright. Of course, Colt says there is no way he can work with Adam. Colt agrees to join the task force with a little pressure from his Alpha, and a deaf ear to Maddox's protests that Adam knew Angie was married/mated and still dated her and tried to keep them apart.

Colt believes searching for the Nightwalkers is an excellent way to take his mind off his mate problem. Not so much when a woman fitting Shea's description is killed. As expected, Colt goes into protection mode and finally decides to consider a bond. Colt's in for a surprise as it may be too late. Another paranormal, a Nightwalker, Julian Koenig, has claimed Shea as his queen!

Undaunted, Colt believes he can make Shea forget about the Nightwalker king now that he's ready to stake his claim. To his surprise, Shea doesn't agree and needs time to consider things. Colt and Adam continue to work together and learn mutual respect for one another and come to a truce, especially since Shea is running out of time to take her place as Nightwalker queen.

Eventually, Colt and Shea are on the same page and have to act quickly to keep Julian from completing a bond with Shea. While Colt and Shea's relationship is no surprise, Colt and Adam's relationship was indeed a surprise.

Colton & Shea.

Awww. I adore Colton even more than his brother Maddox. And love Shea. Took long enough for Colton to get out of his own way.

At the end of “Hungry Like A Wolf”, we meet Shea, who has come to heal her mate. She stays at Colton’s side for three days, falling deeper in love with him only to have Colton wake up and push her away. So begins their push-pull relationship. Colton doesn’t want to be mated, doesn’t want to be involved with a witch, but his wolf drives him to keep seeking her out.

In the meantime, Diaz (the witchy cop) asks Colton as Alpha of his bumptown — as in things-that-go-bump-in-the-night — to team with a cop to investigate Nightwalker killings. He agrees, before realizing he’d be stuck with Adam, the man who dated Maddox’s mate while he was in the Cage.

The rogue Nightwalkers target Evangeline, as Adam’s former girlfriend, then they go after Shea. Only the head Nightwalker — the self titled king — decides to blood bond with Shea, making her his queen. He takes Shea’s blood, and later forces her to drink his blood, before Colton and Shea give in and finish their own more powerful bond.

Love the scene where Colton shows Shea his wolf for the first time. Colton is an Arctic wolf, who loves the cold.

🕷️🕷️ONE MAGICAL LANDSLIDE🕷️🕷️
Wicked witchy! Jessica delivers one thrilling treat with all the action, heat and magic blazing a path laying it out for this perfectly paired, mismatched up team, raising the stakes and keeping it real, wrapping this baby up sleek, shiny and tight. Cutting loose, putting this baby through its paces, weaving it together strand by strand flawlessly. Rushing full speed ahead, dodging deadly twists and sharp turns, bridging the gap and mixing it up, blasting this little fella to life brilliantly. Lines blur and boundaries crossed, limitations are amplified and bent, shifting this baby into overdrive, kicking it into a tailspin with an astonishing realization. Sparks fly as drama, humor, intrigue, underlying threats, turmoil, danger, mounting suspense and intense situations along with a boatload of revelations while dodging devilry, you have one thrilling adventure. The characters are authentic, realistic and original with qualities and traits that add depth and diversity, blending into amazing personalities. The scenes are strikingly sharp with abundant details and descriptions, as to give you a full understanding and realism that flows smoothly. Amazing job Jessica, thanks for sharing this little guy with us.

H- Colton Wolfe
h-Shea Moonshadow
Which story do I like more… hard to say. The 1st one it was 90% Maddox & Evangeline.. this one was more Colton fighting the bond, then the Nightwalkers & their killings, Adam- Evangeline’s ex & now Colton’s cop partner, his ghost friend I think his name is Dolton & then Shea. I wish this story had more of Colton & Shea & a little less of the other stuff. So we meet Shea she is a witch but also a healer & empathy. Her brother is a druggy who got her in trouble by pretty much selling her to the king of the nightwalkers- who are worse than vampires. Now after being rejected by her mate Colton for like 5 mths (that to me is stupid, cause in other books once you find your mate- you can’t get away from them) the kind Julian decided to make her his Queen by creating a blood bond with her. You would think Colt would feel something different OR wouldn’t leave her alone finding out this.. but he did & Julian does find a to get to her. This book got me so upset at Colton that when Julian told Shea that they will bond I was actually rooting for them… for like 5 mins. I didn’t love it but it was ok. I think this book has great potential but to me felt kind of flat. So I think I like book #1 better than this one.

The witch is his, even if he doesn't want her.

I enjoyed Colton and Shea's story but I admit I'm glad I finished, finally. He was too stubborn by half and she was a sucker for her brother. Nana was great, though, and I hope we get to see Hudson taken to task over his reckless endangerment of his younger sister at some point.

Colton is determined to not be subjected to fate's matchmaking. Especially not if that mate is a witch. They're nothing but troublesome diamond-hoarders and Para traitors who work with the Ants. Shea has been waiting for the one she can call her very own. She doesn't want to be alone anymore. Nana's in Europe working and Hudson's off being Hudson. Too bad she got a wolf who wants nothing to do with her. Or does he?

Torn between his stubborn head and his yearning wolf's heart, Colt has to fight his every instinct to stay away from Shea. And she makes it easy for him, until she decides she doesn't want him either. And then pledges herself to another to save her brother. "Mine" becomes his mantra as he fights to keep her safe from all who would harm her and dare to try taking her away from him.

This book made me so viscerally fucking uncomfortable that I cannot in any way continue the series. I get that he was a villain but everything about Julian and Shea literally made me wanna puke. I had to put my phone done several times because it was just sheerly fucking disgusting.

And this book continues this author's trend of either over explanation or not sharing any info at all, and constant mistakes.

oh and Fun fact to people who write witch books: smudging isn't witchcraft and is a protected fucking practice of INDIGENOUS PEOPLE. Fucking Christ do some research. It isn't hard. It's twenty twenty fucking three for god's sake. It's not a secret that burning sage is harmful.

I genuinely don't think I'll be reading another book by this author. Ever. Despite the fact that, much like Colt said, Adam does grow on you. Like mold. And I hate it. But I won't be reading his book or any other one. This author harps on really harmful content, tropes and character interactions and there is nothing redeemable about the writing that makes up for it or makes me want to continue reading.

So, this story starts out with both wolf shifter Colt and witch Shea being idiots, and that lasts for quite a while. Colt is being an idiot by trying to deny his mate, Shea. Shea is an idiot because she tries to help her loser brother; a brother that obviously cares very little for her. This ends up putting her in a dangerous position; you can have a soft heart and not be an idiot. Then she withholds important information; that’s close to lying for me, so more idiocy going on. But! The overall premise is interesting and fun; some unique ideas going on. So, I was entertained for the whole story. Shifters, Vampires, and Witches equals Fun!! This is a 3.5 for me, but I decided to go with a 4 rating because most of what I didn’t like was just being annoyed at the character’s idiocy. I do also think there needed to be more with the main couple in the ending. So, despite the bad decisions from the characters, I’m still looking forward to the next books in this series!

An engaging read

Author Jessica Lynch has created a fascinating world for this series! I do recommend reading the novellas "Of Mistletoe and Mating" then "No Way" before this story to provide more background and context. Surly wolf shifter Colton is hobbling himself (literally) to avoid his fate; witch/empath/healer Shea is almost literally killing herself because she won't avoid her fate. There are numerous surprises, such as who's responsible for the menace to Grayson, an enemy that becomes an ally, and some of Shea's backstory. But there are enticing questions left unanswered, including, Is there a puppet master pulling the strings? and Was Grayson the target or the distraction? and Will Shea fully meet her potential now? and What about that sorrowful ending? This reader can't wait to find out; "Rogue" is next!

I enjoyed Colton & Shea's story. This is my first book from Jessica Lynch and honestly I want to go back and start with book one!

Colton is determined to not allow fate to match him with his true mate and given his past history with watches he doesn't want to mate one. Shea is a witch but also a healer, she is excited about Colton being her true mate but is constantly hurt by his rejection.

Shea's brother is constantly getting into trouble and Shea feels like she should be there for him and save him whenever he gets into trouble. In order to save her brother this last time she has to pledge herself to a vamp who her brother inadvertently offered her as a bride. Colton starts to realize just how much he does want his witch but when he finds out about her pledge he goes from kinda wanting her to Mine!

This is the second book in the Claws series by Jessica Lynch– and YES, you can read it without having read the previous one…. I like it when a series does allow for this…and there are enough references for me in it to be chasing up book number 1!

It squarely fits into your classical paranormal romance story lines with shifters, witches, vampires and human living together peacefully, or hmm not so peacefully. It expands on that by mixing a ‘slightly’ prejudiced werewolf with a witch and seeing whether romance can overcome these obstacles.

It is a fun read with enjoyable and likeable characters with good chemistry between them.

THIS ACTUALLY WASN'T SO BAD, EXCEPT I GOT TIRED THAT THERE WAS NO ACTION BETWEEN THE MCS' but there was definitely a bad guy sniffing around the edges.

DNF at 75%.

COLTON was just too prejudiced against witches that he rejected the one female that is his fated mate, and also an eager one to be with him. Except he stomped all over her feelings. Now that a Nightwalker is in town and wants to claim her for his Queen, does Colton react.

As much I like this troupe, Colton was just taking foreverrrrr and he doesn't quite act like an alpha.
Otherwise, the story wasn't actually bad but I guess it's midnight and I'm hankering for a shut eye and I'm closing this book now.

This is the second book in the series. I enjoyed the first book, but this book is even better. I liked the characters. There was more to the story than just love and sex, add in a crazy Vampire King and a heartbroken detective and you have a great story. I can't wait to see what happens next. There were a few typos, but I let the author know and she said they were taken care of. I would recommend this book.

This story is really intense. I loved it! Colton is really stubborn, and very unpleasant while he tries to fight the mating. He comes to his senses but he is still a dick. Unfortunately Shea’s brother gets her into a bad situation with a vampire and Colton has to rescue her. The story really pulled at my heartstrings, and I couldn’t put it down. The ending is just a bit tragic too, so I really need to see the next book to find out how it all works out. Fabulous writing!

better than the 1st one

The first book dragged for me. This one was much easier until about the 50% mark. Again seems to be a flow issue and making the characters not have any kind of common sense but it is getting. Better. Again, really great story line and now I am sure I will finish the series. I would recommend it, just know that it has some flow problems that seem to be getting better. On to #3

I wanted to like this book as the concept was good but the writing was terrible. The writing style is incredibly juvenile and something I'd expect from a fanfiction when I was in high school. The plot was underdeveloped and felt quite stunted. Fell into the trap of focusing on unimportant themes and conversations that held no meaning and skimming over important plot lines... Overall disappointing.

Tedious Telling got in the way of the story, but the DNF came when the H leaves the h inside as he checks for danger, and she (a wolf shifter) goes outside because she heard a kitten! Honestly, this just does not work unless you are 10 years old maybe. I was reading Tolstoy and Steinbeck at that time, kittens as a plot device didn't work for me then either.

This book is a page turning, fantastic, thrilling ride of nonstop heart pounding adventure. I love the story!! One mate open to her fate only to meet the resistant stubbornness of her fated mate. The female heroine's trial of love and hard choices only strengthen her feelings. Highly recommend.

Gritty and dark!

This series is not for the faint hearted. I think that this book is better than the first. Colt and Shea have a far more difficult row to hoe than Maddox and Evangeline and many obstacles to overcome - not least of which is Julian Koenig.
And lastly, all I can say is, poor Adam!

Different & Wow

I like a story that isn't all about s*x. A true story that keeps you on the edge of your seat. This series and this book certainly does that.

I loved that I get annoyed at a characters behavior. Like a friend you just want to shake to get him or her to see the truth. .
Great book.

Deny deny deny the bond...until you cant

I'm glad we got to see Wolfe story. He is just as stubborn as when we meet him. He fights the bond with Shea even though it hurts them both.

The book was just an ok read. Since I read book 1&2, the repeat in information and backstory led me to doing a lot of skimming when reading.

Overall not a bad read.
