Cid continues to have no clue about anything while Princess Alexia has been kidnapped (though she’s hardly in mortal peril). Once the day has been saved, plotting continues and things happen, but not enough of either, in case you were wondering.

I had wondered exactly how long this premise could sustain itself and it turns out that ‘one volume’ was pretty much the limit. This entire instalment is just the warmed over leftovers of a story that broke out all its good jokes in the first go-round.

Alexia’s kidnapping is pretty much the best part because of a running gag that calls back the immortal ‘Godzilla versus Bambi’ short, where nothing is taken seriously and Alexia pretty much has things under control from the get-go.

Later on, Cid’s hopeless friends try to make a move on some ladies and Cid’s reaction is pretty stellar and the timing during this bit is quite good (as is Cid’s ridiculous attempt at bartering earlier on). These two suck, but at least in this instance the story is absolutely aware of it (I’m a big sucker for offscreen protestations as well).

And the rest is pretty lame. Cid’s continuing dunce act in light of all the things going on is already grating - it’s one thing if he was ignoring a girl’s interest (though, no mistake, he’s a dick about that too), but it completely doesn’t make sense how he’s now out killing people who are supposedly playing along with him.

Between his sulking over his team of hyper-competent females starting a business without him and that indescribably dumb nuclear bomb joke, ugh, I just cannot handle it. I realize this is me not being the target audience, as usual, and the point is that Cid just bounces along saving the day without realizing and competently running a secret organization of cute girls who dote on him.

Doesn’t mean I have to like it though.

Arguably this would have been a lot more fun if they’d kept the good jokes but then taken the story a little more seriously. Sure there are overtures to that effect, but not really. So if the story isn’t serious and the jokes aren’t funny, what does that even leave you with?

2.5 stars - I laughed at the parts I noted and that counts for something, but not much. I rounded down because I’m genuinely not sure if I can take another volume of this (also, it is pretty obvious that the adoptive father is behind that other storyline, prove me wrong, book).

What a great second volume! The build up has been really good and the big battle was awesome! Made so by the art which has been amazing.

I really like how the MC is seen as this all knowing character to his subordinates but isn't quite to that level, he just likes to sound really cool which then happens to sound like he knows everything that's happening.

As much as I do like the MC it's the side characters that have me intrigued, they all seem to have a story to tell which I'm curious to read about at some point.

At least it stays faithful to the source material. I wish the western world specifically Hollywood would learn from this.

Shadow draws too much attention to himself. Imitation is the highest form of flattery. Hidden chocolate.

I kinda think Cid should reveal who he is since he has that much power but I mean I get why he keeps it a secret! was not prep for Cid to reject Alexa like that ngl!!

Still fun.
As long as the story manages to strike the right balance, it should continue to be fun.
