This is an apocalyptic story with an unusual twist. The main character is Mike, a police detective who has just finished his biggest case ever. He and his partner had finally ended the eight month manhunt for a serial killer and his partner is escorting the prisoner to the Feds, while Mike and his family attend his father’s funeral. The only person that will be missing is his sister Kat, gone from the family for many years after a serious difference with their father, which Mike has no idea of. He has tried to invite his sister back, but she refuses to engage, preferring the loneliness and isolation of her new life.

On the day of the funeral, all the power suddenly goes out. Mike can only think of the warnings his sister has given him over recent years. Of what could happen when disenfranchised people or terrorists group together to attack the normal way of life. He figures out from what his sister has told him that it was an EMP attack. The power isn’t working, nor their mobile phones or even cars or any modern style of transport. His mother is in the city centre, some twenty miles away from them in the suburbs and he has to figure out how to get her back to his house.

He has an older style truck with no electronic computer chips, ie pre-1975, which has sat in his garage for years. He tells his wife to get the kids packed and to get any canned goods and water loaded up. He also breaks out the family gun safe and leaves his wife armed, while he goes for his mother. Luckily he has an old bicycle to use, but with the heat of the day and a long ride, he is soon near exhaustion, but can’t give up. He sees very quickly, the quick change in people’s behaviour as soon as normal circumstances suddenly cease. He even comes face to face with a small group of terrorists, speaking in an unknown dialect, in the centre of the city.

He faces many difficult decisions, as people are mown down in front of him or calling for help. He want to get his mother, but doesn’t even know if she is still alive. His current job as a police officer goes against everything that is driving him now. Back at his house, his wife is getting involved trying to stop redneck prejudice from attacking her neighbour and theirs. But emotions are high and some people can’t see any sense once they get angry. Mike has a fight on his hands to get his mother out of the city and as soon as he gets home, he will be in another battle with those he considered as neighbours.

This is just the start of the excitement to follow. Unknown to Mike, there is someone tracking him and his family, who wants nothing more than to make him suffer and to kill, in a slow and painful manner, every member of his family. What he did to that person to cause such a dedicated focus, is all to be discovered. The site of his sister’s cabin, is not the peaceful oasis he believed. The nearby town has its own group of dissidents, unhappy with the inequality in American life, the super rich vs the poor and struggling. They have added their names to join a terrorist group, attacking areas all across the US, gathering supplies and weapons. The townsfolk have been corralled into a guarded building and there are men searching actively for Kat’s cabin.

Not a simple survival after the fall of modern life story, but also an escape from a predator with sick plans in mind and a fight back against those who would imprison and force their way of life on others against their will. A good tale of survival against the odds, mixed with a serial killer on the hunt, a family trying to get re-united, terrorists attacking the normal mode of life and learning to survive in new and long forgotten methods. It added a nice twist to the usual EMP apocalyptic tales and fights for survival. It is something that could happen anywhere and something 99% of the population are unprepared for. A good, easy, flowing read with good surprises and twists. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

I like reading books about EMPs and what happens afterwards. In all of the other books, the good guys defend themselves initially. This book takes a differnt tack initially, and I had to think about that for awhile. Then, throw in a serial killer that escapes during transport to the airport because of the EMP, and this killer vows to get the detective that caught him. There are some twists and turns that keep this story interesting until the end.
Enjoy it.

EMPossible odds

Very detailed character development covering family history and thoughts. Not overdone. Impossible threat of EMP but add collapse of society and neighbors gone bad, rogue gangs and terrorist training town, old age, and a maniac hunting you and you have a nightmare novel. Long novel with no shortcuts. Only typo I found was the last chapter about ‘Jim’ but is quite acceptable. Spoiler alert but not much. Mike and Katy are great. Great read.

Best book ever! More realistic and more hopeful

I liked this book because I have always wondered how families would survive, much less entire nations, should the impact of an EMP occur. I'm big on preparedness and my sister's arent. So, when we plan, do we plan for all? Really makes you think!

Good read!

Great story! My only complaints:

1. There needs to be a sequel! I want to know what haplens with Mike and his family.
2. Random words in sentences that don't make sense. Sudden name Jim thrown in at the end when there was no Jim before. Please edit again! It deserves it!

James Hunt is a great addition to my favorite post apocalyptic author’s. He writes well and keeps it clean. Focused stories that don’t try and accomplish too much with well developed characters that you care about. He is definitely going on my must read list!!

Great story

I really liked this book. It was a great story filled with believable characters. The only reason it did not get 5 stars is the spelling and sentence structure in a few places. I already have a few more books in this series to read and I am looking forward to them. Great stuff!

Good, well told story

No spoilers. Well I liked this story, it brings out the truth of what's important and what's not. Characters have strengths and weaknesses which make you think of your own. What would I do?

Enjoyed this book. Well written end kept my interest. I find these. EMP stories fascinating, but also frightening. At my age, not concerned about mr, just family. But they need a few older people around to teach them the way to survive without technology. Judt MHO
