About the author

Robert Thier

Robert Thier is a German historian, lover of old books and award-winning writer, whose novels and stories encompass the historical, satirical, and fantastical. For the way he manages to make the past come alive, as if he himself lived as a medieval knight, his inventive fans have given him the nickname “Sir Rob.” All of his stories are characterized by his very own brand of humor that has gained him a diverse readership ranging from teenagers to retired grandmothers.

For Robert, becoming a writer followed naturally from his interest in history. “In Germany,” he says, “we use the same word for story and history. And I've always loved the one as much as the other. Becoming a storyteller, a writer, is what I've always wanted.”

Besides writing and researching in dusty old archives, on the lookout for a mystery to put into his next story, Robert enjoys classical music and long walks in the country. The helmet you see in the picture he does not wear because he is a cycling enthusiast, but to protect his literary skull in which a bone has been missing from birth. Robert lives in the south of Germany in a small village between the three Emperor Mountains.

Not what I was hoping for

Rikkard Ambrose is in Georgia, USA getting ready to come into a windfall, but not before encountering a bullheaded woman and someone to swindle. In order to amass his fortune, he needs to remove an obstacle while unfortunately saving the day.

The precis informed us that we were going to learn how Rikkard Ambrose became the richest and most powerful man in the British Empire. This led me to believe that we would meet him when he didn't have much, so we would find not only his beginnings, but that of Karim.

In this story, Rikkard already had Karim and a lot of people in his employ.

I am a Storm and Silence fan, but this one didn't do it for me.

short novella where Mr ambrose is only a bit player. told from the point of view of a slave freed out of spite. it's.... I've always had a little itch that told me that this author Has the anti-racism work to do. He uses the n word a bit too casually for me in this book. But I can't say that I have ever read a story from the perspective of a former slave freed out of spite who falls in love with a man who escaped from a slave ship and swam to shore.

...that being said, this story seems like...a sanitized slavery, where they all lived free and happily ever after once Mr ambrose solved their problems. That rubbed me wrong. Very "white savior".

That being said I don't know when he wrote this, maybe he is more aware of those biases now.

I went into this book thinking we were going to dive into Mr Ambrose's youth. How he struggled in his early years, made a name for himself and amassed his enormous fortune. I also thought we were getting the story of how him and Karim met and why the huge Mohammedan is so fiercely loyal to his employer. However, what we got was something else entirely.
It was fun, fast paced and overall a great ride. I loved getting to know Pearl and Jabari, explore their story and who they are as people. Mr Ambrose was just a bonus in all of this. Pearl and Lily are kindred spirits, I have no doubt in my mind and I hope they get to know each other in the more recent books!
Overall I highly recommend this little prequel, just don't expect to get to know Mr Ambrose better than you already do, despite the fact that he's more chatty in this book.

Riveting and unique in its sass and pzazz, the book, like all its prequels is a marvel for the reader. Mysterious, fast-paced, keeping you on the edge of your seat, and yes subtly romantic. The humor and wit with which these stories are written are uncanny. More than anything else, the amazing way each chapter ends on a cliff hanger is dope!

And given the amazing series, I really really looked forward to reading this book, because the mystery and questions were never really answered in main series.

I was expecting this book to be about Ambrose and it was not. I didn't really care about the characters in this book. I found his flamboyant writing still of characters to be to much when you don't have our favorite block of ice to level it out.

Took me a while to read this because life soooooo yeahhhhh.
