Dylan learns life isn’t something to be taken for granted when at the tender age of three his musician parents are gunned down during an attempted robbery of the nightclub where their band is performing. The incident not only robs him of his mother and father, it steals his most precious of all possessions—hope. For the next fifteen years it’s an uphill struggle just to survive.
Then out of the blue appears an opportunity which gives him a glimmer of optimism for what the future might hold. The Songwriter of the Year contest is announced and Dylan along with his friends Truman, Maddie and Josh decide to enter. In spite of having no knowledge of songwriting, they make it to the finals. The contest organizers fly Dylan and friends to LA for the televised awards ceremony.
LA is another world. Hollywood, celebrities, life at the speed of light. As spectators Dylan and friends are mesmerized by it. Against all odds, they win the contest and are awarded the title of Songwriters of the Year. They’re no longer spectators. They’re the show. Fame and fortune is theirs for the taking. The contest-winning song is a mega hit. They have their own reality TV show. The offers come at them quicker than they can field them. There’s no limit to what lies ahead for Dylan, Truman, Maddie and Josh. Or is there?
Mason relocated his family to the Gulf Coast where they are enjoying a happy, healthy and active lifestyle. Who isn’t happy by the beach? He is also wondering why he didn’t do this a heck of a lot sooner!
With the new locale, comes new interests and hobbies. Mason is exploring the coastal marshes and parks by bicycle and learning all he can about surf fishing so he can start catching dinner. Updates on Mason’s newest endeavors will be posted on his “What’s New" page as well as news about his books.
Oh yeah, and Mason has been writing! Following a six-month hiatus for this move to paradise, he is busy researching and writing his next novel. Wish him luck!
This book starts off with some rather brutal murders, which isn't a spoiler because this info. is provided in the introduction. Rather than being sad, though, Backbeat is ultimately a happy story about appreciating what life has to offer despite its setbacks. What I liked was that while the book had drama and conflict, none of it seemed gratuitous. Sometimes, books throw in tons of chaos just because, but the struggles of the characters felt real to me. I recommend this read.
This was a very enjoyable fast-paced read! I loved the song lyric chapter titles that correlated beautifully with the substance of that chapter! I was engrossed in the book beginning with the prologue and didn't want to put it down! Very well written and a captivating story! I look forward to more books by Mason Malone!
