“When an object materialises out of thin air before your very eyes - you write a book.” In the late sixties, 30 East Drive, Pontefract, became home to one of the most infamous poltergeist casesthe world has ever seen. When co-author and former sceptic Bil Bungay bought the house in order to promote a movie, he had no idea that a powerful, terrifying, entity – one capable of defying the laws of physics – was still very much in residence. This book provides first-hand eyewitness testimonies and reams of recent evidence to make the case that the house is indeed home to extraordinary paranormal phenomena, and then asks the Just what the heck is a poltergeist, anyway?

I'm a 48-year-old child who has no plans to ever actually grow up.
I make my living as a paramedic, clinical educator, for a busy hospital system and work as a street medic in a 911 system.
In my free time, I serve as the director of the Boulder County Paranormal Research Society, and investigate claims of haunted properties, people, and objects on both sides of the Atlantic. I love to read, particularly SF/Fantasy, history and historical fiction, the paranormal, and basically anything that piques my interest. I appear on the TV shows Haunted Hospitals, Paranormal 911, Paranormal Night Shift, Haunted Case Files, and several others.
I am an avid video gamer, table-top gamer, and love to build Lego. My wife and I are the proud humans of five adopted rescue cats and one smelly but adorable dog.
Normally I enjoy Richard Estep’s books, but this one got bogged down in too much backstory and repeating every tiny detail from just about everyone who ever stepped in the house. His own investigation—the part I wanted—was only one chapter of the whole book.
The story of 30 East Drive and it's plethora of Paranormal Activity has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I grew up in Yorkshire, and as it happens, my best friend currently lives about a mile away from the Chequerfields Estate.
I've been open minded in regards to the existence of the paranormal my entire life, and have always held an interest in such occurrences.
Not surprisingly then, this book has been ok my "to read" list since I found out it was being published. I like Richard Estep as a writer, he always gives an unbiased view. Even here, when his own experiences at the house have been so significant, he does not attempt to sway the reader with any over presentation. Indeed his ability to recount his experiences, and those of other eye witnesses, and then simultaneously try to debunk, is uncanny.
I particularly like the fact that Bil now owns the infamous house, and that he took the time to speak to those closely involved in the area, and seek out historical evidences where such a thing existed, it makes the content all the more credible. Having spent some time reading up on the facts presented, I have to say that this is by far one of the most well researched paranormal books I have had the pleasure of becoming lost in.
The alternative explanations at the end of the book also lend to the non-persuasive nature of Estep's writing. If you are a sceptic, feel free to remain so, if you believe, well this is a veritable treasure trove.
I take my hat off to Jean Pritchard, for remaining in a house of which she was terrified, for 50 years.
This is another fascinating book from paranormal researcher Richard Estep and Bil Bungay. Written with noted attention to detail, this book reports many of the events that have happened at this legendary locale. It takes a scientific approach, relaying events while not sensationalizing them. This is particularly evident in the chapter on the Most Haunted show's visit to the property. A healthy dose of skepticism over the visit keeps a welcome neutrality. Some truly frightening events have occurred at this house and the entities should be respected, as some unfortunate individuals have found out. The public can actually visit this house though it is not a decision to be taken lightly. A number of interesting pros and cons are listed at the end of the book covering possible explanations for why this location remains as active as it has for decades, thoughtfully presented. Author Estep has appeared on a number of paranormal shows and has himself visited this location. I always enjoy his appearances and books, as they stand out in a crowded field for their elegance, respect and balanced nature.
I purchased this book as soon as it was released and I have to admit it was an absolutely brilliant read. I honestly couldn't put it down! I got it on my kindle so having the opportunity to use my phones QR Scanner to see the photos or watch the videos was a great touch! I am a true believer in the paranormal, but suggest even if you are a non-believer, give this book a chance and by the end of it you will be in no doubt to the paranormal activities that go on in this house. All in all, I thoroughly recommend the book, well written, well researched with lots of documentation to prove that the place is alive with paranormal activity .... what are you waiting for???? Go and buy the book and meet The Black Monk Of Pontefract! Next step a visit to 30 East Drive!
The book is good but there's only so much repetition that a person can take. I only live about 4 miles from 30 East Drive I already knew it's history but now I've learnt more about it's history, the book does raise some good questions, but as to whether they will be answered is another matter. There is so much history that Pontefract has is it any wonder that it has a house like this. I was a member of Pontefract Heritage Group we did ghost walks around Pontefract town centre, which has numerous ghosts & also Pontefract castle which a history of it's own, including a monk of it's own which has been seen by a member of the Pontefract museum. There was a priory not far from the castle it makes me wonder if 'Fred' was one of the monks there who went a little bit wayward. Good read though
The Black Monk of Pontefract by Richard Estep & Bil Bungay ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 . This book is completely out of what I would normally read but being local and living in Pontefract thought I’d have a read . The house is well known and I have driven passed it many of times . The house is one of Britain’s most haunted and is said to be haunted by the black monk that has been named Fred . This book goes through the story and the legends of Fred as well as talking about the film and the stories of people whom have visited and stayed in the house . If your into the paranormal and ghosts then it’s definitely an interesting read!
I am a sceptic but I love ghost stories and really enjoy Richard Estep's work. This is a fascinating, multi-generational haunting. The happenings inside (and out) of the house have been meticulously researched and reported. The codes inside the book to scan were a great idea, although it would have been a more seamless read had the pictures been included and the scanning only necessary for videos. At times the authors did repeat themselves, it almost felt like they were told to hit a certain word count so puffed bits out by retelling a story in a slightly different way.
This book is a very good and enjoyable read. It's well researched and goes into lots of depth, trying to figure out exactly what is going on at 30 East Drive.
I found the parts of the book that deal with things link quantum physics really fascinating and am eye opener. That's not something I've seen in other books on the paranormal.
It also goes back to the first inhabitants of the house; before the Pritchards lived there and includes their paranormal experiences as well.
Like I said, an awesome book. Check it out!

This is the first fiction book I have read in a long time. Having stumbled across 30 East Drive by accident after googling horror films (the house’s history has actually been turned into a film!) its the best find I have made. I have become obsessed with this property and its paranormal occupants. This book has been a great base line for all my knowledge of this property, and that, of all things Paranormal. One thing I will say is that I did not dare read this book alone, and most certainly put me on edge during the duration of reading it. Totally hooked and left me reading late into the witching hour 😳
Even though I loved all the other books this one just didn't pull me in. I was excited to read about the happenings going on in the house, the stories and evidence of what visitor's experienced. The thing is I found some of it boring I don't know why but I was determined to finish the book. This book was just not for me.
Was fascinated by the various outcomes of people's visits to the house. Added bonus was to know of the history of the area aswell. Certainly leaves you thinking.
Loved this book by Richard. Not sure if I would have the courage to investigate there much less live there for all those years. I have great respect for the family that did. Thanks for sharing this story.
Information factually presented and allows you to make up your own mind. There are no theatrics, just facts. The scanable codes are an exceptional touch that enhances the information making you feel you are at the house. You won't regret reading the book.
Just didn’t hit that spot for me. Interesting…yes, engrossed…no. Problem is we all know the account at 30 East Drive, we know the stories before reading but I was expecting some excitement when telling these stories. It just wasn’t there. Great book for insight on experiences and debunking some claimed experiences. Just a casual read nothing special I’m afraid.
Definitely the author's best book and has given me even more incentive to take part in a Ghost Hunt there overnight. We have been meaning to do it for ages!
DNFed at page 95, was interested in the subject but it kills the vibe of the book having QR codes instead of images. Like I struggled so hard to read when it would reference evidence images and I was greeted with a grid. If I'd bought the book instead of borrowing on KU and found QR codes I would have been livid.
In an unassuming ex-council house in West Yorkshire numerous supernatural happenings have been experienced by various people. And it's not your Caspar like friendly haunting. People are left terrified and even injured. Whether you're a believer or not, this is still a fascinating book that will sometimes make a chill run down your spine.
