When Russ suffers a Thanksgiving disaster, his gorgeous neighbor Esteban is there to save the day. And after an innocent mix-up leads to the former Hollywood hottie playing the role of Russ’s date, Russ thinks scoring Esteban as his fake boyfriend is a huge win. The newly discharged marine is healing inside and out and could use some holiday cheer.
For his part, Esteban is intrigued by his big, bad neighbor. He likes how his matchmaking cat brings out an unexpected caring side of Russ. Desire flares as the reasons to continue their ruse pile up for both men.
And pretending feels so good. From chocolaty kisses to late night cuddles, their burgeoning friendship is getting cozier and cozier. But as the end date for their little deception looms, all the real feelings they’ve tried to ignore come tumbling in. Each must decide whether they have what it takes to ring in the New Year as a couple.
Mr. Right Now is a stand-alone holiday novella with sweet, low-angst feels, spicy love scenes, and foodie inspired, quirky Oregon romance with a military flavor. Happy ending guaranteed with no cliffhangers!
Frequent tweeter, professional grammar nerd, and obsessive reader, Annabeth Albert is also a Pacific Northwest romance writer in a variety of subgenres.
Emotionally complex, sexy, and funny stories are her favorites both to read and to write. In between searching out dark heroes to redeem, she works a rewarding day job and wrangles two toddlers.
Russ is my new book boyfriend. He's mine, people, you hear?
I liked Esteban too, but Russ is considerate, kind, empathetic, and determined to make his fake boyfriend see that their pretend relationship is one hundred percent real.
Esteban thinks Russ is on the rebound, but really that's just a lie he tells himself because he's scared. He's been left, so he'd rather not try.
But it's impossible not to fall for Russ, who makes Esteban feel like a superhero.
Esteban rescues Russ on Thanksgiving, and their neighborly friendship slash fake boyfriend scheme becomes something much more.
First there are the cooking lessons, then shopping trips and meals together, and finally there are kisses ... Oh, yeah, the steam will melt the coldest of hearts, especially coupled with the delicious epilogue set a year later.
This is more of a novella, but the characters and relationship are fully developed.
If you're in the mood for some holiday cheer, read this story!
Absolutely stunning. Such a sweet little Christmas romance with PERFECTLY charming characters, a light foodie theme (okay, let's face it, the first 20% is two guys cooking) and one of the most heart-warming slow romances ever.
I am so in love.
This isn't a story that will throw amazing plot twists at you. It's rather living and breathing through the characters and their emotions.
Russ is a 30 year old veteran who gets used to civilian life after a knee injury required him to be discharged early. He moves into a condo and is just about to prepare a Thanksgiving dinner for his sister and her family when his new boyfriend (who claimed to help him cook) ditches him.
Throwing out a ruined skillet with the charred remains of sauteed onions has Russ run into his hot neighbor, 40 year old former Hollywood actor Esteban (don't get your hopes up, think toothpaste commercial rather than A list actor), who takes pity on the poor guy and spontaneously helps him cook Thanksgiving dinner.
And just when they're done, the family arrives and Russ' sister erroneously assumes Esteban was the new boyfriend Russ wanted to introduce to the family.
Looking at the dejected young guy who needs to break the sad news to his family, Esteban decides to dig up his old acting skills and help the poor hunk out.
The fake boyfriend trope is a constant theme throughout the story and has both guys slowly get closer without any big drama. Both men are such clearly developed characters with a well balanced arc that it was a true joy for me to see them find happiness in each other.
Sure, the whole 'rebound' thing was done to death by the end, but rest assured, there are no dark surprises or angst in there. It's a very, very sweet Christmas romance and a perfect story to enter the season.
A 5 star favorite and one of my favorite reads in 2020
Mr. Right Now is part of An Annabeth Albert Christmas, which is a set of four stand alone holiday stories. This is the oldest one I believe but is the last one I read. I adored the other three by the way. Maybe since this is the oldest of them all, it had a slightly different feel to it. The story is short but it took me awhile to finally settle in to it. By the second half, though, I was starting to feel more attached to the characters.
Russ is a big burly guy, and gave ten years of himself to the marines. But due to some physical issues, he had to return to civilian life. The transition hasn’t been easy for him. After spending time at his sister’s home, he has finally bought a condo. Russ kept his true sexuality hidden while he was still serving but once he left, he was determined to live his true life which included a new boyfriend. Which didn’t end well since his now ex-boyfriend broke up with him the night before Thanksgiving, when he was supposed to be helping Russ to cook and host Thanksgiving dinner. When things aren’t going well in the kitchen, his neighbor rescues him.
Esteban is nearly forty years old. He is a former actor that, after a lot of mediocre parts, moved to Portland, bought a condo and found a job he loves. He has noticed his new neighbor but knew nothing about him until he ran into him on Thanksgiving morning. Realizing Russ was in trouble, he offered to help but when guests arrived, they mistook him for the boyfriend. Esteban used to be an actor and he didn’t want to embarrass Russ so he figured he’d play along.
One event leads to another where Esteban and Russ are still playing the happy couple. But every time they are together, things start to feel more and more real. They keep planning for their break-up but then they have another event they need to attend. Esteban has been hurt before being the rebound boyfriend and he doesn’t want to make that mistake again. He needs to protect his heart. But what if his heart has already decided on what it wants...Russ?!
This really was sweet. The writing just felt different than the other books. I was still invested, though in Esteban and Russ’s happy ever after. And as I said, it’s a quick read. You’ll finish it in an afternoon.
This was my first Albert read in what felt like years (but is probably more like only one year), and what a lovely little Christmassy treat it was.
You don’t need to know much about this one, except that it is a holiday themed M/M romance about next door neighbours Esteban and Russ, who get themselves tangled in a fake-boyfriend relationship, which, inevitably, results in burgeoning friendship and blossoming romance.
Also, one is an actor-turned-event-planner and the other is an ex-marine and a total gentle-giant teddy type. Swoon!
Plus, there are a couple of cats to get those cute men-with-pets vibes in, and a bunch of supportive and charming family members to round out the likeable cast.
Mr. Right Now by Annabeth Albert is precisely why I love holiday romances. I love that warm, happy feeling they gave. They make me feel as if I'm sitting in front of the fireplace with my hot cup of cocoa on a winter day. I found this novella utterly endearing.
While I was excited when this story was first announced when I read it was a fake boyfriend storyline-
I'll admit I was disappointed. I still wanted to read it because Annabeth has written one of my favorite holiday romances. In the end, she didn't disappoint, and she also taught me something about myself. Anyhoo, highlights.
What I loved:
-The characters. Both Russ and Esteban were lovely, as well as the secondary cast.
-Relationship development. I learned that I don't hate "fake boyfriend" when it happens on accident. How it occurred was actually sweet, and how their feelings grew felt organic. I loved all of their interactions.
-Sweet and romantic.
-The matchmaking cat, he knew all along these two belonged together. ;)
-There was also no unnecessary drama. It could've easily been added, but I'm happy the author steered clear, and the one problem was solved quickly.
All in all, Mr. Right Now is a solid holiday read. If you enjoy holiday movies, like the ones on Netflix and Hallmark, then you'll surely enjoy this book. I could see this adapted into a film. It gave me the warm fuzzies.
I love it when Annabeth writes a Christmas story, they're always filled with such warmth.
This is a delightful fake boyfriends series set in Oregon, home of her Portland Heat series, although it's not connected.
I loved both characters here, Russ who was still struggling after being forced out of the Marines post injury, and Esteban, bruised after being dumped by a guy who went back to his ex.
Their feelings and fears were perfectly pitched as both fought to stop falling in love.
I also adored both their families, the chaos of Esteban's and the quiet support of Russ's sister, brother-in-law and his B-in-L's mum, who was also his boss.
And a matchmaking cat, Lance knew what he was doing for sure 😉
#ARC kindly received from the author in return for an honest and unbiased review.
This book is the author at her very best! It may just be one of the very best "Fake-BF" books I have read. So very very well done! Two amazing MCs, of course Russ being ex-military meant I was a goner for him from square one! But she got me with Esteban as well. Could not help loving this couple! What a joyous holiday read this was!
Neighbours Russ and Esteban unwittingly go from practically strangers to boyfriends in a matter of hours. It’s not planned at all, but they go along with the mistaken identities to humour their families over the holiday season.
But with each fake date and time spent together at home (just as friends!), neither man can deny that their pretend romance is starting to feel very real.
The initial set-up had me grinning like a fool. Esteban was just lending a helping hand, and suddenly found himself with a boyfriend.
The meet cute was quite cute indeed!
I think what I liked best about this book is how wholesome both of the main characters are.
Esteban’s an extrovert with a love of cooking, and is always willing to lend a hand.
And Russ is a teddy bear. Shy and a bit standoffish at first, but deep down he just wants to love and be loved. I would happily volunteer myself for the task.
Of course, Esteban did prove himself worthy! I’m not jealous at all.
Though this is a novella, Russ and Esteban’s relationship didn’t feel rushed at all. It’s an easy progression from fake boyfriends, to friends, to actual partners.
The two men fall for each other gradually - through dates chaperoning each other around to family and work events, shared meals at home, and eventually sweet kisses.
Esteban and Russ fall for each other almost effortlessly. The angst is minimal, and it doesn’t take too much convincing for both men to realize that they have a shot at something real.
The happy ever after was the perfect cherry on top!
If you’re looking for a low-angst and very easy to read MM holiday romance, I’d definitely recommend ‘Mr. Right Now’.
You know what? I enjoyed this one. It was a mindless and relaxing read. No angst. Sweet and sexy men. The story line worked for me and at the end I was a happy girl.
It starts out with Esteban saving the day at Thanksgiving.
Then when he and Russ decided to carry on with their "fake" relationship through Christmas things really heated up with these two!!
I loved their New Years Eve celebration which led to a sweet ending!
3.75 Stars!! 😍 Loved this sweet holiday romance with a fake-boyfriend trope🎄🎅🏼💕 despite the familiar plot. Russ is in a little bit of a predicament when the book starts; his boyfriend has just walked out of his life on the day that he is hosting his family and boss for a thanksgiving dinner. Add to that the fact that Russ can't cook and his ex had planned everything before he left, Russ is in a real quandary. Just when he thought that the dinner was unsalvageable, he is rescued by his next door neighbor Esteban. Esteban not only helps him cook the dinner, but also pretends to be Russ's boyfriend when his guests arrive a little early. Despite their agreement to end their "fake" relationship in a few weeks, the attraction between them gets harder and harder to ignore when they start spending more time together. But Esteban is afraid to be Russ's rebound relationship, having had his heart broken before in a similar situation. Russ however, refuses to give up and pursues Esteban so that they can make their fake relationship into a real one. He recognizes his growing feelings and wants to give their relationship a real shot. But will he succeed? Will Esteban be brave enough to confess his own feelings before Russ walks away? This is a really sweet holiday romance with great MCs, supporting characters, 2 cats and lots of cooking.. 💕❤️ Highly recommended to all holiday romance fans 👍👍
4.5 stars, and completely sweet and adorable! <3 Exactly what I needed to read right now. Annabeth Albert never lets me down. Thanks again to Santa's jilted lover for making my day brighter. xx
****
All I can say is Santa, you're really missing out because Santa's jilted lover is the best! Thank you for the wonderful gift, I'm so excited to read it. :)
Mr. Right Now is a sweet, sexy novella featuring neighbours – a former marine and actor-turned-event planner – that takes place between Thanksgiving and Christmas. I’m not the biggest fan of novellas as I often find them rushed and lacking in characterisation and relationship development, but fortunately, that isn’t the case here, and Annabeth Albert has penned a charming and convincing romance that will certainly warm anyone’s cockles!
Russ has been thrown in at the deep end in the worst possible way. He and his boyfriend were supposed to be preparing Thanksgiving dinner together for Russ’ immediate family, but said boyfriend dumped him the night before leaving Russ – who isn’t very experienced in the kitchen – holding the turkey.
As it were.
A disastrous attempt at sautéing some onions for the stuffing sees him going outside to throw the charred remains of both vegetable and pan into the trash, when his neighbour Esteban stops to ask him what’s wrong and then offers to help. Surprised but very grateful, Russ accepts, and over the next few hours, finds himself enjoying the cooking lessons and demonstrations from the gorgeous, charming and confident Esteban, and enjoying the man’s conversation and company just as much.
With everything prepared, Esteban is getting ready to leave Russ to it when the doorbell rings earlier than expected – which leads to Russ’ family assuming that Esteban must be the boyfriend he’s told them about. After an awkward moment of unspoken communication, the pair decides to play along for the time being – and agrees to announce their break up a few days later.
The trouble is that things keep happening that cause the break up to be put off. A charity fundraiser, a shopping trip, and a work party, along with evenings spent together and shared meals… and suddenly the fake-relationship that was supposed to last for just a few days has stretched into weeks – and maybe ending it isn’t what either man really wants or needs.
Annabeth Albert packs a lot into the shorter format without anything feeling skimped or rushed. The chemistry between Russ and Esteban positively crackles right from the start, but even though they’re attracted to each other they have reasons for being cautious about starting anything new – Esteban was badly burned by an ex who left him to go back to his ex and Russ is on the rebound – but it’s clear they’re falling pretty hard for one another and I loved that they’re so open and communicative about what they’re looking for and how they feel. There’s a nice slow-burn going on, and when the relationship turns physical, it feels like a natural extension of the non-physical one they’ve already established.
There’s some backstory tucked in there for Russ, a military vet who was invalided out and has been struggling to adapt to civilian life. Kind, considerate and maybe just a teeny bit shy, he’s a total sweetie, and when he decides to convince Esteban to become his actual boyfriend, well, let’s just say Esteban doesn’t have a chance 😉
Mr. Right Now is one of those rare novellas that feels fully-rounded and complete. There’s no manufactured drama, no overblown angst and no question that Russ and Esteban are perfect for each other. If you’re looking for a quick, emotionally satisfying festive read with a nice side of steam that will leave you with a smile on your face, you need look no further.
The fake boyfriend trope is tried and true and this was another winner in my book. I haven’t quite figured out what exactly pulls me into this faux world but I can’t deny the rush I get every time it suddenly, isn’t pretending anymore. Russ and Esteban are neighbors that haven’t gotten friendly…quite yet. When Russ is abandoned for his first time hosting Thanksgiving and hasn’t a clue what to do, the hottie next door rushes to his rescue. Russ isn’t about to turn him away because quite frankly, he wants to impress his family. When the evening is a smashing success his biggest surprise is how much fun he had and how easy it was. Esteban brings fresh energy to his home that he’s never felt before. Or is the energy connected to Esteban and follows him wherever he goes? Russ would like to find out. And I can’t say I blame him. Me too!
For as lighthearted as this was, there was a deeper layer that pulled on my heartstrings. Apparently, this was my first dabble in Albert's words but it certainly won't be the last. I enjoyed her humor, pace, and smooth voice. I found myself cheering for both of the guys and their progress together. I loved the family ties even when they were annoying and demanding. I loved the lessons in the kitchen and out of it. I loved how food became comfort and joy. It's easy to love Esteban with his bubbling bright personality but I was equally drawn to our reserved soldier. But most of all, I loved how Right now became just...Right. *sigh* That's the good stuff right there!
Beware of: The pages are short and sweet…and so are they. But when it’s right, it’s right. And sometimes your dream is waiting for you just around the corner, better grab it while you can!
This book is for: Anyone hungry for a spontaneous hoax turned honest, this delightful pair delivers a feast worth devouring!
It was a sad, sad state of affairs that after all that food, the thing he wanted most for his Christmas Eve was a taste of Russ’s lips.
All I was in the mood for today was a really sugary sweet Christmas story and this delivered perfectly. It was damn sweet, but still had a bit of substance to it and I really enjoyed that.
It’s a very simple plot, Russ gets broken up the day before Thanksgiving and his neighbour (Esteban) comes over to help him cook his Thanksgiving meal and Russ told his family his new boyfriend would be there this year so they start fake dating and then it starts being more and more like an actual relationship.
The one thing I didn’t enjoy was the typical break up at 80%, I never enjoy them and the one here really didn’t feel needed. They broke up and then talked about it and got back together less than an hour after the break up. They should have just talked instead. There was no need for that break up.
But it was such a damn sweet book and it was perfect for my mood and just the right amought of Christmas cheer I needed.
Also, I love Russ so damn much, he’s just the fucking best. He was so so good to his man and such a rock. And I loved how he would let Esteban boss him around and just do what he asked. I just love him so much!
Sweet Sweet Sweet There’s not much more to say. No drama. No fuss. No mess. The typical “oh no” happens at 80% instead of the usual 72%, and lasted all of 5 minutes. And then, sweet. As pie. As candy.
My rec? Be sure to brush your teeth after reading!
Cute and spreading lovely feels all the way, this was a pleasant Christmas read. I really liked shy, not long out Russ and commitment-hesitant Esteban.
These are two mature guys in the procedure of building a second career who get to know each other, become friends, and then more. Their story is heart warming, touching and totally relatable. And the smexy scenes are really hot!
Overall book rating: 4.5 Audio Book: N/A Book Cover: 4
Oh darlings. I just LOVE me some Russ! Of course Esteban as well but Russ ... Don't you just want to wrap him up in something warm and keep him safe forever?
I enjoyed the thing between these two. This was one of my feel-good ones for an end to a not so feel-good year. Thank you Annabeth Albert ;-)
*happy sigh* I love Annabeth!! This novella/short story was perfect! Sweet and endearing and sexy in all the right places! Such a great story with little to no angst! What more can you ask for?! LOL I think what I loved about the story itself is its believability or better put, the connection I felt to the relationship. I’m not a big fan of short stories that just BAM you with the HEA from one chapter to the other and this story did not do that at all. I connected and believed in Russ and Esteban! It was great!
I was expecting a sweet Christmas story that I’d probably forget about in a few days. What I got was one of the smoothest, most organic transitions of friendship to love I’ve ever read. The characters didn’t overthink what was happening. Despite the fake boyfriend trope, they embraced their friendship as the foundation and essentially began dating without realising it. I absolutely loved it! So sweet and sexy.
This was cute, I really liked the beginning and the development, the end not so much, but that's what happens sometimes with short stories like this one.
I had problems with the writing, dunno if its because English is a learned language to me, but I got lost a lot. And the Spanish sometimes was so wrong it hurted, still liked the latin representation.
I’m a sucker for a good holiday romance and author Annabeth Albert wrapped one up in a lovely bow with Mr. Right Now. Filled with family, heart, holiday spirit, and love I found it impossible to put it down.
When Russ’s boyfriend leaves him right before he is set to host Thanksgiving for his sister’s family and his boss he is feeling helpless and panicked, but when his handsome neighbor Esteban offers his culinary skills to make the holiday happen, Russ agrees. When assumptions are made they find themselves in a fake relationship with the “out” date being moved every time they turn around.
Despite this being a holiday novella, Ms. Albert packs a lot into it letting us see where they characters have been, how their pasts have made them the men they are today, and giving us a glimpse into the future. These two had a lot of chemistry from the start but it takes them awhile to act on it, but once they do it is game over. They both fall pretty hard and they both are worried/nervous due to their past relationships, but they do a great job of communicating and working together to find solutions that work for both of them.
I loved that the respect and admiration they felt for one another shone throughout this story. I enjoyed watching how both Russ and Esteban reacted to their situation as they figured out their relationship and mixed their lives together.
While they started out as “fake” this couple was anything but and I loved every minute of this story.
Oh boy. I can't believe I forgot to write up this review as soon as I finished. So the long and short of it is that I remember I was left with lots of good feels and I remember thinking that I enjoyed this as much as I've enjoyed Ms. Albert's other series. Her writing style, her engaging characters, and her plot development are all spot-on. This story is no different.
In fact, it's even better because it has a nice take on the fake boyfriend trope and both MCs, Russ and Esteban are sweet. They belong together and that's what happens. All in all this was a very satisfying holiday read.
