Bob Miglani and Rehan Yar Khan have come together to expel our preconceived notions regarding success and take us through a thrilling ride of making our own luck. In this enlightening book, they have talked about the seven luck accelerators which would aid us in becoming successful in our respective lives. Along with sharing the luck bytes, they have gone a step ahead elaborating on their personal experiences to acquaint us with those luck accelerators. The writing is simple yet effective and engaging. Despite being non-fiction, I was totally immersed in the book.
The book also contains action plans at the end of each chapter which would significantly help us in improving ourselves. I highly recommend this one for its preciseness and abundance of practical knowledge.
Make Your Own Luck by Bob Miglani and Rehan Yar Khan is an engaging and informative book that offers practical advice and actionable insights for achieving success in sales, startups, corporate careers, and life in general.
The book is structured around seven chapters, each exploring different aspects of success. The authors draw on their own experiences and those of successful people to provide valuable lessons, including the importance of taking action, resilience, networking, building relationships, and setting goals.
The book's accessible writing style, real-life examples, and practical tips make it a must-read for anyone looking to improve their odds of success in any area of their life.
It is never too late to pick up a motivational or self-help book and start reading. After all, a good book can make your life better in magical ways. I am glad that I got to read this amazing book as I could learn a lot from it. And, needless to say, I give it 5 stars out of 5.
As you can understand by the title, the book talks about the very important aspect of our lives that almost everyone has thought about- LUCK. While some people believe in destiny and others on their hard work, there are times when people sit down and think whether few things go as per luck or not. The authors have made efforts to make the readers understand what lies behind the greatest success stories and how the work plays a more important role than luck. Besides this, the authors have even talked about their personal experiences to make the text more relatable for readers.
I must say that the book has been narrated and compiled engagingly and I thoroughly loved reading it. I will not play a spoiler and summarize everything that has been mentioned in this book. But, the few things that I learnt from this book were it is important to be helpful, focus on creating value, look for the fine details to understand things deeply, it is important to be passionate and do not feel afraid of taking risks.
I am a firm believer of passion and it made me feel happy while reading this book that I am going in the right direction. The title is perfect, the idea of compiling this text is fabulous and the cover is simple. If you are looking for a good non-fiction read, you can pick this book without thinking much.
Make Your Own Luck is about understanding how to disentangle luck and skill when evaluating performance, and the implications of making predictions in different environments. Lots to think about here, and the authors Bob Miglani and Rehan Yar Khan did a good job of introducing a few ways to tease out skill from luck. The book discusses a plethora of anecdotal stories of people who have had "good" and "bad" luck in their lives, as well as a number of studies that serve as a more scientific basis for the conclusions. The book doesn't instruct the reader on how to become luckier in the superstitious sense. Rather, it brings what people often consider as luck into the open and explain how you can be 'lucky,' aka 'successful.'
Some people simply seem to be in the right place at the right time; just as others seem to reap more than their share of misfortune. Why do some people get more success, while others never seem to be successful? Do special stars shine down upon those who seem to effortlessly win professional success, and personal happiness? Is luck or the lack of it a matter of pure chance? Is good fortune intelligence masquerading as fortune’s whim? All of this information is provided at an engaging pace without reverting to the gee-wiz tricks or over-simplification of the TED generation.
I've read an article about Bill Gates and his success story sometimes back which summarize the author's claim about Luck and success. Bill Gates made a bad decision early in his career. In fact, if it weren’t for the fact that some other people made even worse mistakes, we might not ever have heard of him. Yes, Gates was and is brilliant, and he worked hard. Malcolm Gladwell, author of Outliers, attributes his success to the 10,000 hours he spent mastering computer programming at an early age.
There is more to Gates’ success, however, than his talent, hard work, and education. It might be that we know his name only because of his amazing luck as a negotiator. The flip of the coin came up heads for him three times in a row at a critical point in his business life. So it is with any decision: the chain of events that brings you to a choice point will be shaped by luck, good or bad. Prior circumstances may determine whether you’re in a position of power or relative weakness. (For that matter, luck governs whether rain or sun that day will make your mood sour or buoyant.) And the same is equally true for everyone with whom you deal.
Make Your Own Luck is an interesting guide on how to create a work environment conducive for “luck” and how to make it work for you. The authors Bob Miglani and Rehan Yar Khan take the readers on a journey on how to foster serendipity and what to do with it once you find it. There are many interesting cases in the book. The authors succeed in providing a spectrum of business cases that illustrate in practical terms the application of their approach to serendipity.
While Luck is often characterized by the fact that one cannot control it, these authors take to debunk the myth of how we can make our luck using 7 major idea points. A little about the authors make us realize that they are indeed the right people to speak about this owing to their respective experiences as a start-up founder and a successful sales person in a fortune 500 company. Each idea is backed by experiences from both the authors and how the particular idea has helped their career. Ideas such as the importance of maintaining a network and working towards a unexplored nichebare typically what we learn in b-schools but to reemphasize it with pointers are what makes this book special.
I specifically loved the way the authors explained the importance of taking the hard route. As a person I've always believed and experienced that and while it is often stated unnecessary, this book shows how taking a difficult route might actually help us in the long run.
I loved the writing. It was simple and to the point. For a nonfiction, to have finished this book in a single sitting must be a personal record but that's just how interesting I found the book to be. Ofcourse I took down notes because there was enough information that we expect from a nonfiction but this was more of an experience where I felt I took away a lot more information than I can express.
Definitely definitely recommend this book for people looking for work or are working. A must read indeed. Especially if you think things aren't going your way career wise.

Which is your favourite business book of all time? Book Review - Make Your Own Luck by Bob Miglani and Rehan Yar Khan @fingerprintpublishingbooks “The mind is a muscle and requires tension and resistance to grow. If you want to grow, you must take the hard path.” - Bob Miglani
The mind is a curious organ of our body. It can be trained for anything. You can train it to be lazy all the time or you can train it to be super-motivated with the urge of doing whatever it is that you want to do in life. This book is all about how you never get lucky without doing anything at first. You need to keep working towards your dream and be ready to take chances if you want all the good luck to fall upon you. A very good instance in this regard which Bob Miglani shares in the book was about how he was hired in Pfizer. At first, he was rejected for the role of a sales professional but with a rejection letter in hand, he told himself, “I am already rejected. Let me still try calling the secretary of the Head of the Sales Department and get an interview.” After making numerous calls each being politely turned down by the secretary, one day he got lucky and the secretary got him the interview. She told her he had one month to prepare. And now with the determination to land the role, he studied and prepared for the interview, so much so that he prepared a presentation on why he should be hired. And in the end, he again got lucky and got the job.
So in this story, how do you think he got lucky? He got lucky by simply persevering and not giving up. Rather than just waiting around for great things to happen to him, he took the matter in his own hands and became lucky. This book is full of a lot of good stories that can inspire you to be successful in life. I would especially recommend this book to entrepreneurs as one of the writers is Rehan Yar Khan who is one of the earliest investors of Ola Cabs. You will find a lot of useful tricks that you can use in your new venture, however, some of the stories got a bit repetitive as I reached the end of it. Overall, it is a good light book that can teach you a lot of good things. I would give this book a 4.5/5
As you can understand by the title, the book talks about the very important aspect of our lives that almost everyone has thought about- LUCK. While some people believe in destiny and others on their hard work.
This book is written in an easy-going, conservative tone with real-life examples. This is a very useful book and a great resource for learning the strategies behind successful investing like Ola.
A book filled with great advices but one that struck me like no other is this: ask yourself what problem you can solve and try to help those who have that problem. Like this, there are many other words of wisdom that are not at all complex to understand but definitely life-changing.
Here are my key takeaways and quotes from the book. ⭐Be OBSESSIVELY CURIOUS Learn. Get deeply immersed in a specific area, even if it doesn't have a compelling reason for the short term return. Unique opportunities are only found when you are in search of knowledge and understanding.
⭐ GIVE. CREATE VALUE. SOLVE a PROBLEM FOR OTHERS. When you give, you will receive Figure out what problem can I solve? who can I serve? what value can I create for this specific person? (Talk to people to see if the problem needs to be solved) Luck is accelerated when a value is created.
⭐ DO WHAT is HARD Smooth seas never made a skilled sailor. The hard path creates a moat. To accelerate the chance of success/luck, always choose the hard path. You know it is hard when it scares you and makes you uncomfortable. Force yourself to delay gratification.
⭐ BE UNIQUE. FIND YOUR NICHE. BE DIFFERENT. Find an unexplored area and go deep. Learn, understand, get a granular and laser-like focus on a specific field and become a master - at the smallest and narrowest part of your industry. Once you do that you will have people asking you advice, thoughts and ideas.
⭐ HAVE a BEGINNER'S MINDSET A full cup can't be filled with more knowledge. Recognise that what got you here won't take you there.
Overall an INTERESTING read.
Who Do I Recommed This Book To? Almost everyone, If you love self-help and motivational books, just go for it.
*NOTE: I am extremely grateful to Fingerprint! Publishing for sending me this book. However, this does not at all hinder my honest opinions regarding the book. This is a spoiler-free review. All opinions are solely mine. Check out my blog 'The Scribblings' for more reviews (https://thescribblingssite.wordpress....).
Reading the book ‘Make Your Own Luck’ by Bob Miglani and Rehan Yar Khan was a very positive and encouraging experience for me. The book is full of great advice and ideas to boost curiosity. Both the writers have talked about their close experiences with failure and success instead of focusing on only success.
The book aims to give a value-based insight into the start-up world. It does not list a set of to-dos to become successful but provides a kind of holistic perspective towards how success can be achieved. The authors have recounted their own experiences and learnings to do the same.
As I mentioned before, the book is filled with good advice but one that struck a chord with me like no other is this: ask yourself what problem you can solve and try to help those who have that problem. Like this, there are many other words of wisdom that are not at all complex to understand but definitely life-changing.
I love the language-usage because it aims to clearly bring forth the points through narratives. I did find minor grammatical errors, even though just a few times. In the beginning, I found it a bit confusing to know whose narrative I was reading but it became easier to understand once I crossed around 30 pages.
Who Do I Recommed This Book To?
All in all, I recommend this book to literally everyone. Even if you are not an aspiring business-person, you will enjoy reading it because it projects certain positive thoughts that are truly treats to read. This book helps in understanding why it is important to rely on our capabilities and our ability to control.
“If we want to be successful, our view of luck must change.”
~ From the book ‘Make Your Own Luck’ by Bob Miglani and Rehan Yar Khan
The book is nothing less than a MAGIC! I realised it as soon as I read the Introduction. It got cemented firmly in my mind when I completed the first chapter. The book is written by Bob Miglani and Rehan Yar Khan who have proved their mettle in their respective fields.
To me, Bob Miglani to Pfizer is what Jack Welch to GE. Though the comparison may look exaggerated, consider this. Bob was rejected initially when he applied for a job in Pfizer but went on to hold some of the highest position in the company through his perseverance. His classic explanation of how he landed the job would go on to inspire millions, for sure.
Rehan Yar Khan, on the other hand is a serial investor. He was also born in average family just like Bob but his intuition had made him to become one of the most successful in his field - Investments. Considering that his investment of US$100,000 in OLA has become US$75 Million in no time, you can be very much assured of his investment acumen. His startup Flora2000 - an ecommerce website taught him the nuances and he went on to invest in PharmEasy, Druva, Country Delight, GoMechanic etc.,
There are 7 chapters in this book and each book opens up a new avenue as to how you can become successful. Usually, I give away the book once I finish reading it since I never wanted them to get piled up at my home but as far as this book is concerned, I will never be giving it away since I feel it precious and looking forward to get it autographed by both the authors, one day or the other...
The book largely focuses on the principal of giving back to the society and creating value for others and, moreover, not waiting for one's luck to act and make things better. The whole idea revolves around making a move, and deciding for oneself rather than sitting and waiting for the luck to turn the tables.
Another principle I liked in the book was that diverging from the common path and setting on a journey to discover what's undiscovered yet. The authors tell all the budding entrepreneurs to always believe in simplicity and work with an open mind while understanding their role which they are to play as members of the society as a whole. I found the book highly inspirational and motivating, and best suited for people who plan on building a career out of a startup or a new business venture.
If you are an entrepreneur or someone who is an investor, this book will prove to be an interesting and handy one . Not a book with in_depth knowledge of business management or investment but one that gives away great tips shared by two real and established businessmen who through ups and downs learnt and practiced consistency and reached the adobe of their success. ▪️Mr. Rehan Yar Khan and Mr Bob Miglani both are entrepreneurs. Mr. Miglani went to US to pursue his dream. He is now CEO of a Fortune 500 company. He mowed lawns, delivered newspapers, and helped his family run their Dairy Queen ice-cream shop in New Jersey. It was there that he learned the valuable lessons. Mr.Rehan is an entrepreneur and venture capital investor. In 2008 he began early-stage investing and advising startups in India. In the process of building his own companies, Rehan learnt that failure is a learning opportunity and luck favours the prepared. ▪️The small incidents they shared as example were interesting to read as real life entrepreneurship experiences. In total 7 short chapters there are action plans / tables that makes you think why , what and how you want to achieve your goals. ▪️There are 'Luck bytes' which are small important lessons of encouragement .They tell us that we should explore unknown territories so we can stand out from the crowd for better visibility ,a flexible mind is needed with a beginners curiosity , to be willing to experiment and take risks , to be open to new things , to carve a niche & try to have in depth knowledge of a particular subject . ▪️Luck accelerates when value is created . So if you can solve others problems ,people will come to you and there your business starts. ▪️In last few pages there are few points of sales and promotion accelerator which again were nice to read.
Alright!! The book deserves a 4 star at least but for any person who is in the entrepreneurship pursuit should give it a read. Even if you are not planning to start your own company anytime soon , you should give it a read.
It outlines how your success in professional life (be it your career or your startup) isn't always about planning and hard work. It's a lot about intangible things, some of which will be covered in this book in some form.
It's a great read for anyone who wants to become better in tier professional life and how to look at few qualities which can help you in the long run. So hope you get to increase your "LUCK" after giving it a read.
Met both co-authors at the Oxford Bookstore New Delhi while on my usual book browsing trips, did end up buying a copy and, frankly, I am not disappointed. The book does follow the conventional self-help, "do this be successful" dialogue but it also advocates the arguments through both authors' own experiences or better said, adventures. Good read for people starting out their own businesses and/or trying to score positions that may seem out of reach at the moment.
3.5 stars. Overall a nice quick read. Some good nuggets of information throughout. The book tended to get repetitive as they related every topic back to their careers… I think it would have been better with examples of other successful “lucky” people.
Author suggests, solving problems of others, giving value addition to customers, finding a loop hole in a tigh competitive market etc. can increase chances of success.
