Free kick is the best of the football books by Michael Hardcastle out of three that I have read!
My favourite character was Jazz, a shy, nice boy and probably deserved to win the contest for team captaincy. Nick Abel Smith is definitely not my favourite as he’s near the bottom.
This book gets a four star, it would get a five, but I got a tiny bit bored near the end.
Michael Hardcastle was always a favourite author of mine when growing up. I love football and as I am starting my own novel on football, I thought who better to read than my childhood favourite. Reading Free Kick was a decent read. Basic story-line as you'd expect from children. Book was from the 70s (am I that old?) and I still enjoyed it, just not as much as I did as a nipper.
