Rate this book
He does the government’s dirty work. When he’s double-crossed by one of his own, he’ll stop at nothing to take out the trash.

Korea, 22nd Century. Surrender isn’t in Stefan Mendoza’s DNA. So when a traitor betrays his black-ops team, he alone pushes through the torture and escapes with revenge burning in his mind. On the verge of a systems failure, he taps into his underground network for a set of cybernetic limbs. But his high-tech recovery comes at a heavy price— an assassination hit on a rising political star.

Filled with resentment for the cutthroat world of contract killers, he uses the hit job as a cover to track down the traitor. When he discovers he’s competing with other assassins for the same political target, he starts to piece together a sinister conspiracy that could lead him straight to the shadowy figure behind his betrayal.

Trapped within a hotbed of corruption, can Mendoza exact his revenge and win his freedom or will he spiral deeper into the twisted game of brokered death?

I was born and raised in Tampa, Florida. I joined the Air Force, and my career took me from coast to coast before depositing me in the St. Louis, Missouri area for several years. After a tour in Korea and a short return to the St. Louis area, I retired and moved to the greater Denver, Colorado metropolitan area.
I write speculative fiction, mostly science fiction and fantasy. My favorite writers over the years have been Robert E. Howard, Philip K. Dick, Roger Zelazny, and Michael Crichton.

It's not enlightening

Kinda sad really whenever & whomever disparages your present body unto destruction. Unanswerable questions makes the disparager mighty upset! It's not nice to be upset upon Awakening in a new body with the past decades in cold storage. 😠. 2nd chances are to be savored & the time parsed out fruitfully. Just how it turns out remains to be seen. Stefan Mendoza still is in pursuit of " WHY? ". BTW, STEPHAN is not a friggin doctor so expect no lollipop for answering!

Spoilers: PR Adams’ Into Twilight is good. It’s one of the rare few that made me impulse-buy the sequel without checking blurbs or reviews.

The story follows Stefan Mendoza, a sometime soldier, full-time gangster assassin. The opening sequence sees Mendoza sanded down by road rash in a brutal combat scene. What follows is a redemption story, embedded within an overt plot of “assassinating a US Sentator.” It reads like a spy thriller, with intricate shadow-behind-the-throne subplots. What’s more interesting is it’s set within a cyberpunk enclosure; most of today’s cyberpunk is rank-and-file filler, without the genius that went into genre leaders like Neuromancer or Altered Carbon. Into Twilight has the necessary depth to shine; this isn’t indie dumpster-diving, but well-tailored storytelling.

The story reminded me of Lee Child’s novels. Mendoza is a futuristic Jack Reacher, getting the job done despite the corrupt power arrayed against him. He’s a once-was-bad man, trying for a sliver of righteousness as both his own clock and America’s wind into gloom. He’s got skills to take down the bad people, and fumbles enough with the good so you know he hasn’t mastered being a saint. Mendoza knows the inner clockwork of how humans function, and uses this to wrangle his team toward their assassination target. He’s got an old partner in Danny, a confusion of emotions in dead friend’s daughter Ichi, and like most of us would, struggles to communicate with Chan, the hacker of the group.

I mentioned it was cyberpunk, but it feels more like a cold war novel. The city is cold, the streets icy. Shadowy deals are done off the grid. An overworked FBI know all, but take little action. Former allies turn against Mendoza and his team, coring their accounts, and leaving them with nowhere to run. The tech of the world is a backdrop against which the story unfolds; take away the cyberpunk noir, and you’d still have an excellent spy novel.

Action, politics, sex, power, money, and greed – it’s all here. I’ll admit as the story unfolded, and Mendoza’s usually-flexible moral compass rails against his mission, I wondered how this would wrap up. Would Adams give us a story where the hero fails? Can success be stolen from a pile of ashes? I don’t want to give anything away, but the end of this book was satisfying.

Get it today – you won’t be disappointed. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

From the dynamite thrilling opening to the kick ass end, this book was terrific. Once again, PR Adams shows his skill at great characterization, dialog, plot, and world crafting. Stefan Mendoza and his crew are assassins and mercs, not your typical protagonists, but Adams makes them live and breath and you can easily relate to them and the conspiracy they find themselves in.

After his last mission goes disastrously wrong due to a betrayal, Mendoza is forced to take a job he’d rather not do, but his employment options are limited, and he owes the people that rescued him. This job seems easy, but numerous complications arise with political and corporate forces arrayed against him and his newly formed team.

This book is a fast paced and action packed sci-fi techno thriller, with a good measure of cyberpunk added in. It’s great stand alone book, but it’s also set in the same world as Adam’s “Rimes” and “Elite Response Force” novels.

This is a mix of sifi, cyber and physical enhancements.
We follow an agent of the Agency, while he is tortured, beaten and then recovered.
His next assignment seems to be intercepted by other agents, and he sets out to discover who is acting against him.
A page turner with some surprise turns

I won this though a Goodreads giveaway. It was not the book I was expecting, but I'm not sure what I was expecting to tell the truth. It was a good story and reading it made me think through everything that was being said. It felt a lot like a Philip Dick novel and made me think of Blade Runner (Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep). It had a good mystery to it and I liked that our main character got the crap beaten out of him quite a bit. It made it feel more "real" somehow. Adams set some good parameters to the "world" he created and held true to them. It felt really gritty and cool. Nice job. Good book.

This is the first book in a new trilogy from PR Adams and like all of his novels it starts at an explosive pace and keeps on going.
Stefan Mendosa is an assasin and is on a mission with his team when they are betrayed. Stefan gets captured and is tortured over a long period. When he survives and escapes he is tasked with another mission but for Stefan it is all about getting even with the man he thinks betrayed him.
The characters and plot of this novel keeps you enthralled all the way through.
I am waiting for the next novel in this series with anticipation.

I enjoyed this futuristic thriller, although I didn't understand most of the tech stuff. This is one of those wheels within wheels stories, but in the end, you are still wondering, and so is the hero, if it is the right villain. The main character, Stefan Mendoza is a bit of an enigma. He's a brutal killer for hire and it's hard to feel sorry for him, even though he has suffered terrible torture. He lets himself become the tool of others and isn't sure who his real target is, which could be a setup using him as the scapegoat. The latest hit is a mess, which Mendoza can't figure out, he's sure that the man responsible for the deaths of his previous crew and his torture is behind it all. Mendoza's only redeeming feature is his loyalty to his crew.

Futuristic plot-twisting espionage action book with some good character development. Overall, I liked this book, but there were moments where the character development and actions was a bit irrational. Maybe that was the point with what the plot turned out to be. Overall a good read and the world and the characters were interesting enough that I'll probably check out the next in the series. Worth the read.

terrific writing keeps the reader want more and stuck to each page. Still not sure if Stefan Mendosa is good or bad but he definitely holds the reader to each page.

A great novel

I truly enjoyed this book. I usually know "who dunnit" from the first chapter. Not this one! I had my suspicions, they kept changing, though. Very well written, engaging characters and interesting storyline. Wonderfully written.

Sympathize with man Assassin?

For most it seems impossible but this book starts.off a trilogy which asks just that from the reader. What makes it interesting is that he is trying to figure out who has hired him for this current job? He has a conscience buried somewhere within himself. I wonder what the next book will reveal.

Very good plot

Some lengthy passages at times but overall excellent story. Characters were definitely well rounded, with enough historical background on each to relate to their story. Nice world building overall as well.

Stefan Mendoza was an Agency assassin, until they left him for dead. A foreign government captured him and finally let him go after torturing him. He was rebuilt, given new eyes, legs and arms. Now he's hired by an unknown group and is trying to discover who has hired him and why. Adams writes a fast paced book. Looking forward to second in the trilogy.

I received a free copy via Netgalley in exchange for a honest review.

I did enjoy this and the characters are brilliant.
Unfortunately for me there was some very slow plodding reading at times in between some brilliant action.
This slightly spoilt the story as a whole.

Hard to put down

Very interesting antihero. Lots of twists and turns. Somewhat of a real surprise ending. I realize that most espionage stories have casualties but I hoped there would be 1 or 2 less of the god ones

Bond in a cyberpunk world, full of enhanced humans, cyborgs, robots, androids - a lot like an anime movie.
He’s an assassin with a crew. Gets captured and tortured, then gets rebuilt.
Lots of fighting, explosions, drama, everything a person could wish for:)

This was great! I got really into this and thoroughly enjoyed the plot, the characters, the world building- it was all highly enjoyable.
Government assassin Stefan is betrayed by his own, and after the fallout, gets a new team, a new contract, and a new outlook. Fast paced and action packed, full of cybernetic implants, hackers and VR, car chases and shady organisations, I could completely see this one making a brilliant TV series at some point.
I found it exciting and enjoyable, and especially liked the team meetings where the diverse group all understood their tasks, but nobody liked them...
I thought it was really well written and believable, although strange, everyone seemed real to me and unique - I've read a few too many books recently where the characters almost blend into each other. I enjoyed this more than recent reads by some of the bigger more famous authors I've read recently, and will definitely be heading straight off to buy the next in the series (although it ends perfectly fine as a standalone, not one of those annoying half-books where you have to read more to find out the rest of the story).

I'm grateful to Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this book in return for an honest and unbiased review.

The book starts off on a brutal note. He and his team are betrayed and he is captured, tortured and maimed. He is rescued and cybernetically enhanced. He becomes an assassin, but is always after the person who he feels betrayed him and his team, and who left him in a Korean prison to be cut apart.
The story goes along at a roller coaster pace, which makes for a good read. Well worth reading

Complex thriller

Following up close the twisted path of a not-quite-government operative in near-future America; classic cyberpunk with point-of-view character as puzzled as the reader till the endgame. Excellent action, well-drawn and intriguing characters, entertainingly complex plot.

Lot of action.

Rouge agency players, cybernetics toss in betrayal and patricide and you have a busy plot. And we can’t skip over lust and greed.
All that going on and it was tied together well.

I found this to be just an ok read, and I say that because I liked the storyline but the action scenes became hard to follow. It became confusing at times, and I felt like I had to reread some parts over just to try and make sense out of it. Sometimes I felt the story didn't flow well enough at certain points of the book, same could be said for some of the team characters too. Would I recommend this book? Only if you are just looking to fill your day with something to pass the time. Anyway, three solid stars from me, now on to something else.
