Rate this book
Two tribes go to war and Sean Doyle is standing in the middle White Ghost - A Shaun Hutson classic

Sean Doyle is no stranger to violence. As a member of the Counter Terrorist Unit he's seen more than his fair share of it.

And it seems his intimate acquaintance with death and brutality is set to continue, as he investigates the hijack of an army weapons convoy in Northern Ireland. Managing to infiltrate the organisation, he soon makes some disturbing discoveries: the body of an IRA informer stuffed with heroin, and an IRA safe house full of Chinese Triads.

With a wave of violence sweeping across Britain, Doyle soon realises the stakes have been raised to an alarming degree. The evidence points to an unholy war between two Triad groups with the IRA behind one of them. Motive? Only Doyle can find out, and he must do so before the carnage spirals out of control...

The Return of Doyle
Format: Paperback

"Hutson does a detour from horror in this novel as he tells a tale more in keeping with high octane thriller. Once more Doyle is thrown into a clash with the IRA. Throw in the Triads and a load of stolen weapons, light the blue touch paper and stand back. High speed plot and tons of violent clashes between the triads culminating in a Chinatown showdown makes this another great Hutson Novel. Buy it now!!"

Hutson weaves together an action thriller tale that is as ridiculous and over the top as it is schlockily entertaining. He writes about both Triads and the IRA with the kind of cultural sensitivity you would expect (none), and the plot is really just a loose framework for one act of personal revenge after another.

Anatomical violence, thoughtless geopolitics, language that's as stiff as a board. 10/10 experience, 2/5 novel.

I am reviewing the urban thriller White Ghost by Shaun Hutson which is a very good novel which I bought from kindle. Shaun is probably better known for his horror novels than thrillers and this novels does have elements of both most notably the gore like someone's head being removed whilst still alive and someones muscle tendons in their arms and legs being severed. He has done his research on how triads in Hong Kong do assassinations. This novel is his 4th one to feature Sean Doyle an anti terrorist police officer who doesn't go by the book and likes loud rock music and is partly based on his self apparently. I assume this novel was published before the peace process got sorted out in Northern Ireland. The story centres on 3 locations, Northern Ireland, London & Hong Kong. In Hong Kong it focuses on a faction of the triads who are doing a deal with the PIRA involving gun running and guns being hidden under floorboards although that is one of the first places the police look in an anti terror raid. In Hong Kong the police are starting to have some success with the triads and are starting to dish out long prison sentences where previously most got away with fines, at least in this story. This means the triads may have to look at other locations for doing business. The story snakes and twists along and Doyle has a contract put out on his life. It is probably a bit improbable the triads teaming up with the PIRA. It is quite a good story that I rather enjoyed and a typical Hutson novel in terms of sheer violence.

Triad honour killings, IRA attacks, a stash of high grade heroine and a whole load of missing guns. Counter terrorist operative Sean Doyle has to figure out how they are all connected whilst battling his own demons. Can he join all the dots before it's too late!
