For 100-ish pages, it felt a lot longer than it was. A promising premise with some good fight scenes, but quite a lot falls short. Add in plot holes, typos, grammatical errors, and the purple-prosey-est writing I've read in a while, and I just can't say I liked it.

Natalie (h) is a college student studying for exams in a bar, where she meets Ethin (H). What starts as a one-night stand becomes more when Natalie wakes up with markings on her wrists - ones that match Ethin's. What do they mean? And who are the people threatening her from the edges of the forest?

I never connected with the leads. Ethin was pretty weak, especially for a shifter alpha. Lots of tears, flowery speeches, peace and mercy focused. I'm not saying I want an alphahole, and yes, you can be peace-focused and still be a strong character, but Ethin missed that and just seemed a weaker character overall. The writing style didn't help - made him seem a lot fussier and old-fashioned. Natalie seemed more focused on losing her virginity than anything else. Overall, she never felt consistent, just a weird assortment of character traits that never meshed well.

It felt like there was a lot of padding in areas, and yet other parts weren't developed. For a bad guy (gal), Ona wasn't developed well, and Onid wasn't developed at all. Meanwhile, the backstory for Natalie just felt pushed at us, not really built up into anything. And some things not answered at all. Like . And yet her whole series of interchanges with her dad? Felt forced and unnecessary - too much time and cost for too little relevance to the main plot.

The whole hour and a half late to the exam thing was too much for me. I know, different universities and all, but that would've been half of my university's final exam block and quite a lot of professors wouldn't have even let her come in. And how much does she think she can really answer in half the time she should have had?

The writing was my biggest problem. A romance short like this should be a comfortable, quick read. This was so wordy, it felt slow. If she could use an adjective, she did - unless she could use two. And they didn't always fit. "Onerous Ona"? Really? She's burdensome? Gave the characters' thoughts a stilted feel, and the pacing itself just felt slow, thick. Really needed a good editor to help her streamline her writing.

Thinking of the writing, I didn't like the term "kingdom" for the pack's territory. He's not a king. He's an alpha. Just didn't seem to fit.

On a plus side, the premise was decent, though a little predictable (the whole unsuspecting human as fated mate thing). The action scenes were well written, though maybe a touch long for the length of the story.

Alternating 1st person POV. No cheating, no OW/OM drama, no love triangle nonsense. Drama is mostly Natalie adjusting to the supernatural and Ethin (with Natalie) reclaiming his pack. Would have been more gripping if I ever connected with the leads, but that fell short. Really just needed a good editor to help streamline the writing and build up the details. Ending was abrupt - I'd say HFN - and no epilogue, but no cliffhangers either.

Would I read more from this author? Probably not. At least not intentionally. I've read two now - this and The Red Zone - and been disappointed in each, though for different reasons.

Should have been longer

This was such a short book. It really should have been longer. There were details that were missing and some plot holes. The story has a really strong beginning, but the middle and end are lacking.

Meh.. the book is really short so there really isn’t enough time to really build much of a plot or character development. Especially in the relationship with Ethin and Natalie.

Not Your Typical Fated Mate

Mated For Life is an enjoyable werewolf romance with memorable characters and an exciting plot. Fans of paranormal romance will love it.

The Opening

The opening is action-packed and shows the reader why Ethin is an interesting guy and what the main problems are in his world.

The Characters

Ethin is immediately established as a sympathetic character not only because of what happens to his wife but also because of his concern for his friend Gindy. I liked Ethin a lot. However, I found his in-depth knowledge of Jack London texts implausible. The opening chapter gave a distinct impression that the werewolf community disliked humans and kept their distance, so why would he know so much?

Natalie is a wonderful, strong female protagonist. However, there were certain changes that happen to her toward the end of the story that I felt could have been better foreshadowed. Instead of just happening when it was convenient for the plot, said changes should have been more gradual and shown as teasers to the reader. That would make this change more plausible than just happening when it’s necessary to resolve a conflict.

While I liked Onid as an antagonist, I wish his wife had a different name to Ona. It just gets a little confusing when the action starts and there are Onids and Onas mentioned, especially in the last main action scene.

The Plot

This is a second chance romance where Ethin’s first wife has sadly passed away and now he needs to mate again if he is to save the pack from ruin. Although this is not a fated-mate trope story, it uses a similar conflict. Natalie is human and so she does not understand the concept of mates or what it means for her and for him. If they are both to be happy, she must learn and quickly.

The Setting

The general setting is clear, though I would have preferred the initial setup to be clearer. It is implied that the humans are encroaching on werewolf lands, but in chapter two it’s clear that most humans don’t know that werewolves even exist. So, where exactly are the werewolf territories in relation to human territories and what is this encroachment? It could have been a lot clearer.

I loved the magical element, especially the wrist markings that appear to indicate both rank and marital status. I also loved that the markings could do other things for the wearers. I liked the implication that the protagonists have a lot more to learn about their universe and its magical system.

The Prose

The opening was fantastically well written, shown and not told. But then chapter two has a strangely abstract opening that disappointed me. Instead of firmly immersing the reader in Natalie’s location and situation, it begins with a confusing quote. I was a little lost for a while and found it difficult to engage in that chapter. The rest of the book, however, was fine.

My Opinion

Lovers of paranormal romance will enjoy Mated For Life. It includes enough of the familiar to please regular werewolf romance lovers but also has enough original magic to entertain more general fantasy lovers.

However, I didn’t think it was a perfect paranormal romance. I would have liked more foreshadowing concerning what happens with Natalie in the final scenes and more plausibility in Ethin’s knowledge. A more detailed political and geographical setting would also have been nice.

As a result, I feel I can only award this werewolf romance a rating of 8 out of 10 which will translate to 4 out of 5 on Goodreads and Amazon.

It was an okay read tbh. I found myself skimming through it a lot. Although my main issue is Natalie. That girl is a little hysterical and immature. For example,

“Why the hell would I?!” she shrieked. “I don’t even know you! You’re a monster!”
“I’M telling YOU!” she screamed, and I staggered backward at the murderous look in her eyes. “Leave me the FUCK alone, Evin! I mean it! I’ve spent my whole life doing what people told me to do, playing by the rules! Playing it safe! I’m not going to let you fuck it all up for me the one time I dare to make a mistake! Just keep you and your freak show friends away from me, or I’ll call the cops on all of you!”

Ummmm okay I know it is a lot to take in but I think you should talk a little reasonably and calmly walk away? Why the shrieking?

And then she changes her mind later and let me warn you they didn't have a single conversation between these two scenes.

I offered him a gentle smile, then reached out, and placed a reassuring hand on his wrist. “Don’t be sorry,” I said. “I’m not. Ethin, I’m ashamed of how I acted before. I was shocked. Afraid. I flew off the handle because I didn’t know how else to react. But now… Now I’ve come to realize. This is all just a part of a much larger story. My whole life I’ve felt like I was missing out on something. Like the chance to ever be happy in life had passed me by, and I would never be able to catch back up with it again.”

The story itself isn't very well described and has a few plotholes.
I can't say I enjoyed it. It was just okay.

Ahhh... such a disappointment...

Ethin meets Natialie in obvious circumstances - where Natalie is worrying about her virginity (FFS) after completing college; and Ethin is bemoaning his loss of his 'wife' and his Alpha status in his pack... Insta-love isn't quite happening, since Natalie runs away regretting her (deflowering) night.
Ethin leaves her alone... a daft response from him but then he's a silly male...

Then Natalie gets caught up in the battle for Alpha status with Onid (an aspiring Alpha) and Ona a bitch of a ... whatever... (all with a digression of an interaction between Natalie and her father - which I would have deleted as superfluous if I'd had any input into this story)...

And a denoument of Ethin battling it out with Onid.... which didn't quite hit the mark.

It would seem that 106 pages isn't enough to flesh out the characters, or the background, or why the pack left Ethin alone, or the developing relationship between Natalie and Ethin, or a few other points too.

So: not enough development; not enough explanation of why Natalie , and no resolution at the end, but I guess that's another story. As I said at the beginning: a disappointment.

Many thanks to the publisher for a copy of this book.

This is the second time I have read one of this authors books and I really enjoyed it.
Ethin Was a alpha male grieving for the lost of his life partner/wife and forgot his responsibilities to the pack for almost a year.He gets challenged by another member Onid who he fought in his house caught on fire and thought that he died.
The pack chased Ethin out Of the woods.
Natalie Was in a bar studying for her final exam when ethin sat next to her at the bar.when she looks up there was a hot older man looking and talking to her. They started talking about she was working on and there was a attraction between them. They go back to ethin hotel and things heat up.
When Natalie wakes up she has symbols on her wrists and that when her life changes.Natalie doesn’t want anything to do with ethin and her life is in danger but things are about to change.
Eventually the truth comes out about there past life’s and they go back to the pack to fight for his rightful place as alpha.
It’s a great story with danger/fighting and shape shifting. The characters are great in the book and there is a little sex scene in the book.
I would have liked the story to been a bit longer but overall enjoyable read.

Good reading!

Very intense from the very beginning with the death of Liria , Etin's first mate, so sad and heartbroken Ethin lose himself in his grieve for his wife the he forgot his duties as a Alpha, that was the opportunity Onid was waiting for challenge him for the position , staring a battle not just for the Alpha position but for his life .
Within run away for months until he met Natalie a young girl who studies English literature in college, and the chemistry between them is intense and they finish mating and bonding their life forever without even knowing their lives are now intertwined.
Now Ethin has his mate and he's going to claim his pack back and Onid will fail again because Ethin is the Real Alpha.
I love the insta love from the characters Ethin he is so kind and loyal, that is impossible no full in love. Natalie she is a scary girl at first but she evolves throughout the history and becomes a very brave and self confidence .

Very good history I enjoy reading it.

There is a reason this book is free

The premise was a good idea, horrible execution.

-The book was rushed into 8 chapters. Many of the build up scenes that could have established character development just occurred between chapters.

- The world building was not thought out. The purpose of “knotting” was beyond me and sounded painful? The phases of the moon tattoo just seemed to be thrown in.

- Natalies relationship with her father was lazy. He can wake up when she’s being very quiet, but not when she is screaming, pounding on the floor or having her door knocked down? Not even slightly in the realm of realistic. Her daddy issues are used as a reason for her hesitance for being mated.

However, the author tried to keep her personality realistic and above insta love, which was nice. Instead of staying true to Natalies personality and using character growth for Natalie to accept her situation the author was lazy and rushed to finish the book in a way that left the reader wishing that the 100 page novel would end faster.

Finding what they didn't realize they needed and ultimately wanted
Mated For Life by Sloane Peterson is an exciting and emotionally charged paranormal romance, steamy with suspense and the drama of danger. Ethin and Alicia seem to be fated, as mates, and their first meeting is as sexually charged as it is cute. Ethin is just coming out of grieving and Alicia is looking to expand her horizons with a one-night stand.
Through the plot of this book, Ethin and Alicia have to adjust and accept quickly, but Alicia struggles as her thoughts and feelings are divided, and that places her in greater danger. I really enjoyed getting to know these two characters, their vulnerabilities and their strengths, especially how Alicia grows into the fiercely protective woman she was always meant to be.
Overall, an exciting and fast paced paranormal romance with plenty of steam and dangerous action leading to the HEA.
I read an ARC of this book from Ruby City Books and voluntarily share my review.

i read this book as part of an arc program. This is the story of wolf shifter alpha Ethin and his second chance at finding love after his wife died. Ethin was in mourning and was challenged by another shifter who thought Ethin wasn't a good leader because he didn't take another mate right after his wife died. They fought and Ethin was exiled from the pack. Now Ethin is on the run and trying to avoid his former pack who want him dead. One night Ethin went to a bar and met human Natalie. They had an instant connection and went back to Ethin's hotel. In the morning Natalie saw markings on her wrists and thought Ethin had done something to her. When Ethin realized Natalie had the markings, he knew she was in danger also. I liked this story, it was a little different from the usual shifter story. I liked Ethin and thought he was a good leader who wanted love. Natalie was a lot stronger than she thought she was and i think she knew in her heart Ethin was her soulmate. Good one.

What did I just read!!!

This is definitely not a long story. 9 violent chapters. I think the story itself had a lot of potential but lacked substance of it. Story started with H & his dying wife. She passed away 1yr passed & H was still grieving the loss of his mate which made him seem weak. He was kicked of his pack. Went to a bar & found h & felt sparks that ran through them. After one night of love making she woke up w/moon tattoos on her wrist same tattoo the H has. It looks like the ancient picked her as each other’s mate. New alpha & one of mate came after them. So in her chock of finding her mate in a one night stand h decided to go home where single dad lives. He is the biggest a**hole for no reason. They really don’t go into it. Alpha’s mate came to kill her & h turned into werewolf. I just don’t understand how this happened. Is not like she was bitten or she was adopted... nope nothing. I just felt so much was lacking & way to much violence going on.

All it takes is the right mate to make the difference.

Ethin lost his pregnant mate and lost a piece of himself in the process. This made it easy for a violent, cowardly disgruntled male to attack with his minions to take over the pack. After months of moving around, he meets Natalie and the world as they both knew it changes drastically. Natalie is in her last few weeks of college when she meets Ethin and he tilts her world. The trials and tribulations they endure before returning to the pack scare her beyond definition, but she proves to herself and Ethin that she is strong and willing to go the extra mile for him. This was a really great book. Well thought out characters and enough conflict to keep me engrossed. I recommend this book.

Ethin is in for the fight of his life when his status alpha is challenged and then exiled from his pack. Natalie, well, she's trying to not stress out about her last exam and is cramming at a quiet bar. Ethin finds her there and buys her a drink and it all goes on from there. This was okay, not my favorite book by any means. But there was something missing that I just couldn't love it. I'm not sure where the disconnect for me was, but it is different from other shifter romances that I've read. It's a good read, that takes you through the all the emotions. I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book.

Unexpected human mate

Absolutely loved this book and would highly recommend it to all readers who love great romantic shifter tales. The characters are beautifully written with Eithin an Alpha wolf shifter who has been betrayed by his pack and a beautiful human woman just finishing college. She is a quiet studious virgin who decides to indulge in a night with a handsome stranger. On awakening she notices weird tattoo like symbols on her wrists. Readers should enjoy reading what happens to these two lovers.

Utterly missing huge plotlines, I mean just a tiny book that is all over the place, but like a drunken frat boy who lost his glasses. And somebody get these indie publishers some decent proofreaders! Bless any writer who has the determination to get a book written, published however it happens, that is tough, tough work, but why would you put something out so poorly edited and with more WTF moments than ones that make a reader go "give me more." Won't be reading any more of this author's work, sorry.

More than I expected

This is my first read from this writer and man was it a ride. I wasn’t sure at first, but I stuck through it and I am glad I did.

Now at first I found Nat to be a bitch of the highest order, then I stopped reading for a min and thought...how would I react? And then I gave her a chance. Can’t wait to see if there is more on this pack.

Ethin was simply amazing and just the right kind of Vulnerable Alpha you want in your life.

Ok what?

There's nothing more aggravating than an Alpha that finds out there's an enemy or rival in his pack @ the last possible moment. He deserves to lose it. A friend comes to warn him, literally 2 minutes before an attack. Then he keeps letting that rival live after multiple attempts on his life which, in turn, leads to more attempts. This guy is dumb. At least the one sex scene is good.

Interesting and enjoyable

Interesting and enjoyable reading for a second chance love. Ethin lost his wife (love of his life), but fate stepped in and helped. Ethin lost a lot after this. Natalie was a person who was always afraid and just did what she was told, but fate made a big change in her world. Ethin and Natalie worked out the differences to become one. Great storyline and recommended to the mature audiences.

It’s very rushed but a good story

I read the other reviews and wanted to read for myself. The plot and storyline are good. The length is so short that the events are rushed in a way that is not fulfilling. If there was more time added throughout it would have made this better and more believable. Things happened without explanation but background details should have been added. The two lead characters are like-able and as a reader you are rooting for them to succeed.

Interesting story

So many conflicts just like in normal life. Ethin, his role as Alpha and his pack takes a hard turn when he is cast out of the pack. Natalie a naive college girl with a hard life behind finds herself at a crossroads just before her final exam. When they mee, they both find a piece of themselves they didn't realize was missing. Then Life starts to twist and they find that they need each other in order to survive.

Way better than expected!

I read a few of the reviews and a couple were pretty scathing, but in hindsight, they just don't know how to read. They were confused because this was well written.

They only thing i can say wasnt addressed was the first bite from Ona. It was a week jump and then she had stitches, but i was curious about her explanation to medical personnel. That would have been great to have laid out.

Decent for a novella

Really short read, just 100 pages or so, so it’s a nice literary snack if you’re looking for some shifter love. Some things are left undeveloped, other practical things leave me scratching my head (does she get her wallet back? what about her personal documents and belongings if she doesn’t plan to go back to her dad’s house? I mean, everywolf needs a social security card), but generally a good short novella.

This book had potential. It really did. It just seemed lacking to me. Maybe it was just me but there wasn't much romance. We didn't get to see much character growth. The back stories seemed to be just thrown in at a convenience. So she has a one night stand with a guy who happens to be her mate... Then freaks out.. I totally get that. Id freak out too.
But then a week later, with out even seeing him, or any interaction between them decides... Im gonna go for it.
Oh ok sure... 😒

Expect the Unexpected

Ethin is forced to leave his home after a double tragedy. Natalie’s life is going nowhere ( her description). They meet in a bar and discover a share for literature and a sexual chemistry that defies logic. And then what should have been a normal one night stand turns into something amazing and unexpected . And you just have to read the book to see what happens. Because it’s not simple or clear cut as you may think!

Ethin and Natalie

It a nice quick read. Natalie was a good girl with a past that had shaped her into someone that never took chances. Ethin has lost everything he believed. The Ancient Ones had other plans for the two though. They found each other and found a love and pull that was unknown to happen between a wolf shifter and human. He found love again and she found herself.
