The Thracians

Rate this book
The book is a de luxe edition with rich illustrations in colour, informing readers in comprehensible language about the history and culture of the ancient Thracians who inhabited the present-day Bulgarian lands prior to the emergence of Danubian Bulgaria. In the beginning, the authors present the first European civilisation that appeared and developed in Southeastern Europe, with epicentre in the present-day Bulgarian lands, and the formation of the Thracian ethnos. The Thracians entered history through the epic work The Iliad, which narrates about the Trojan War. The most glorious Thracian heroes who took part in that war are presented, they were equal in bravery and brilliance to the Achaean dignitaries. The book continues with a narrative about the sacred places, about the most powerful Thracian kingdoms and their kings, about their fights against the Romans and about their life in the big empire, and ends with the penetration of the Christian religion in the Bulgarian lands. The album after the text demonstrates the most significant Thracian treasures, tombs and sanctuaries. A parallel table of the most important dates and events in Thracian history and significant contemporary events in the ancient world is included at the end of the book.

This is an excellent compilation of pictures of Thracian artifacts and locations. Indeed the pictures are sharper than any I took myself. The text itself was pretty basic and the English translation was at times clumsy and dubious. I would have liked more detail on the topics presented, but perhaps that requires going to other sources. But on the Amazon fireHD10 the pictures were amazing and completely justified the purchase. In fact I bought the HD10 to see how the pictures in the book would present themselves and they certainly met expectations.
