1.9/5 stars it was an okay litrpg, but I got so bored and detatched from it that I could not keep reading This is another rags-to-riches, loser-to-world-superstar South Korean vrmmorpg webnovel. It is set apart from similar titles by the fact that the main character goes through "character development." It is very, very poor literature. If you are looking for another litrpg trashnovel, it'll be great. However, the tell-don't-show writing style and the utterly bland and robotic characters (even the mc) mean I can't stand this. Rampant nationalism and tribalism don't help either.. Got to chapter 414 as of 11:53 PM 1/06/2022
This is a tremendous condemnation considering that I am literally doing nothing for this month, having finished semester finals, and yet am still quitting this.
Characters: 1/5 disliked The whole story is telling and not showing. The author wants the mc to start off as a loser, so he writes in superficial scenes of him having nasty internal monologue. The author wants the mc to grow as a person, so he writes scenes where he says 'the mc gave xyz to this person as a gift, which shows a lot of growth compared to who he used to be.' The side characters are the usual, bland automatons who only exist to serve a purpose to the mc. It's ironic that the vrmmorpg that the mc plays has "NPCs that act like humans" but really the humans and NPCs alike are all written like NPCs. At the start of the book the author wrote a long assurance that the mc would get better, and I believed it. Sadly the writing didn't get better, and blandly hearing that "the mc is a better person" doesn't cut it for good characters.
World: 1/5 disliked This is the usual vrmmorpg stuff. They assume all sorts of things, and don't justify it to the readers. Why do people spend millions on this game? Why are the top rankers the ones selling things and making money when every single one of them should really be deep in the red trying to stay in the rankings? Why is the game balance so garbage that one person with optimization IQ of a warm potato can consistently beat 2 billion other people? Why does the author feel the need to fill the book with their pro-Koreanism and bring up evil people from the USA, China, and Japan every other chapter while making everyone from South Korea out to be HotKindGamerGods? Why doesn't the mc get a security team? Why doesn't the mc get his parents a security team? Why do all manner of godly occurences happen to the mc randomly even though this is supposedly a game balanced by a perfect AI? Why do people constantly mention "the mc was able to abuse xyz mechanic because he was dumb" when the AI should be constantly patching things since it's perfect? Why does this game feel like it was really made by Amazon? These are all questions we will never know the answer to. Not until somewhere past chapter 414 at any rate.
Story: 1/5 disliked The usual trash tier stuff. I usually like to read OP face slapping novels, but the writing and originality here is just too lacking. The mc stumbles on great things and runs around killing things. As the story progresses fight scenes take longer and longer, and are just the author copy pasting names of moves from character sheets. The author is milking people. Side characters that started out interesting all devolve into three categories: objectively helping the mc a lot, acting against the mc and going to lose, and undecided. It's so boring to read. I'm the guy who gave Emperor's Domination 5 stars, so this must be really low tier for me to dislike it this much, considering it's the same kind of OP mc face slapping story.
It's a Korean light novel set in 2050 about an extremely popular virtual reality game called Satisfy that is being played globally. The main character is a guy who becomes strong by using items like Armor, weapons, etc. That's why the name is Overgeared.
It's an absurdly long novel (>1.8 Million words) that is still ongoing. The character development, the world building, the game system and the powers are very well developed. Fights are very entertaining to read.
I would only recommend this book to people who have read the manhwa by the same name. That way you know what you are getting into. If you like the 70ish chapters of the manhwa, the setting and the world and want to know where the story is headed, then go for it. You won't be disappointed. The translations are good. Just don't go expecting a world class read.
Giving it 5 stars because it kept me hooked for so long and I never felt like stopping. Instead something new always came up and I was thoroughly entertained.
Grid is a mediocre player in the immersive VR game Satisfy. But when his persistence unlocks a legendary class, his luck seems to be changing. Only he’s been saddled with Legendary Blacksmith, when he really wanted a combat class. The Legendary Blacksmith’s unique feature is the ability to equip any item, so he devises a plan to become the greatest through using items.
This is an extremely funny book. Grid isn’t familiar enough with games to know how to play effectively, and he’s also cursed by RNG, so things that even average players could do come with a lot of trouble for him. He also makes stupid decisions based on incomplete knowledge (or wrong assumptions about how the game works). Yet a lot of his bad luck works out better for him than good luck. His interaction with various NPCs is a prime example, and how he (mostly unintentionally) frustrations the heck out of pretty much everyone who knows him is another.
Some bits of the book do drag a bit. For example, the second national competition was far too long. And no, I don’t buy that the viewership was that high, especially for things like an 8 hour blacksmithing competition. Most people would tune in right at the end to see the result instead of watching 8 hours of people hammering at forges. Even the Olympics don’t have that kind of dedicated attention.
It also seems odd to me that Satisfy is so popular when it features such things as using your real face instead of allowing you to create a character who’s totally unlike you. And it’s highly unbelievable that the executive team has time to sit around watching various players. Even more unbelievable is the mantra of “The game has no bugs and we refuse to interfere.” (As someone who works in software, the idea that any software has no bugs leaves me laughing hysterically.)
And some bits are probably going to rub some readers the wrong way. Grid is not only a terrible player at the beginning, but a terrible person. He’s a 26-year-old manchild who acts like he’s 13. But in the course of learning to love work, make friends, and find a purpose for his life, he starts growing up (of course, the story in its latest chapters is almost pushing it too hard in the opposite direction—but then Grid will do something utterly selfish and prove he’s not entirely reformed).
So overall this is a bit of a mixed bag, but the story is just so much fun I kept staying up way too late to read just one more chapter, even if I did end up skimming most of the real life segments in favor of the more entertaining game segments. I rate this story Recommended.
This book stands out in a sea of similar virtual reality MMO gaming novels by virtue of having one of the more unique main characters out there. This can be a good or bad thing, depending on your preferences. Certainly, a lot of readers got turned off his personality at the start. He's not your typical heroic protagonist who outsmarts and overpowers everyone with his skill. In fact, the title pretty much says it all - he overpowers people with the help of gear and items, which he creates through incredibly tedious hard work.
For me, I liked that the main character started out as a petty, unemployed loser mooching off his parents who eventually over the course of the game, learns empathy and finally leaves his loner lifestyle to actually bond with people. He's a very flawed person, and even as he matures, he still has moments where he falls back into bad habits & has petty, ugly thoughts that he then has to overcome. He's not the brightest lightbulb, and it's honestly pretty great to me to read about a character who lacks the smarts but makes up for it through persistence and hard-work.
The one big flaw that this work has is the harem romance, and it's why I give this book 3 stars instead of 4. I can overlook Grid's very shallow objectification of women as a character flaw of his, but then the book actually goes into the POV of the various women who fall for Grid, and I start to wonder if the author has ever actually spoken to a real woman before in their life. A lot of the readers joke about Grid's "Old Man Harem" consisting of NPCs that he bonds with in-game, and it's honestly a shame that the old man harem is far better developed in terms of emotional arcs & individual character development than the real harem meant to serve as Grid's love interests.
Overall, if you're looking for a non-conventional take on the VRMMO genre, and don't mind a badly-done harem that doesn't get overwhelming amounts of screen-time, this book is worth checking out.
I’m excited to have found the light novel on KU for this manga. However, the terrible proofreading/translation is giving me an intense migraine. So, at this time I can’t see myself continuing to read the books instead of the manga itself. At least in that case there is art to dim the annoyance in regards to the word flow.
If they were to employ another editor or proofreader for this book and the other eight I’ve seen, I would love to continue this journey.
The review is for the series. I read till book 3 which I dropped around half way.
This starts of with actually an interesting premise, and the story is such that it holds your attention. But why only two stars (and eventually one star and drop)? Reason one: An imbecile, avatar of greed, potty-mouthed main character, who is also unfortunately too dumb and too arrogant. Disastrous combination.
Reason two: Too many contradictions. On one hand we're told how Grid has incredible perseverance. On the other hand he's constantly trying to run away and "logout" when going gets tough. Again, on the one hand we're told how treats an NPC as a real person. On the other hand he treats certain NPCs (and even players for that matter) as absolute slaves.
Reason three: It takes till book 3 for the main character to develop. The author would like you to think that he starts developing right from book 2, but that’s a lie. Just writing 'Grid had matured' doesn't actually make him mature. But in book 3 he does "develop" and what a development it is! In a single page, he suddenly stops insulting his guild members! On another page he's suddenly very understanding! On yet another page he 'keeps getting smarter' (?!). He changes from having tosh game sense to good game sense on another page. The author basically re-wrote his MC, probably due to negative comments he was getting from the readers. Unfortunately its too late, and too puke-worthily unrealistic.
Reason four: No overarching goals. The only goal the MC has is desire to make money. That kind of shows how limited the author's imagination is. What happens when he becomes rich? Well, he obviously wants to become more rich! But why...? The author has taken a rain check on that. Money can only be the means to something, not the end goal. The result is that by book 3 the story turns into a city sim with shit management, zero character value, and really nothing worth continuing to read it.
Its sad, as in book 1 the author had laid down a setting with potential to be a decent series, but the absolutely undeserving main character and lack of end goal completely handicap it.
Just found out this book has been available for quite some time for free on wuxiaworld.com under the title Overgeared. The translation is way better and I don’t feel like I’m scamming the original translators & authors. Not sure how legal this book is???
THIS IS THE BEST PIECE OF MEDIA I'VE EVER READ. I absolutely love Overgeared. It has everything you want in a good story. I'm emotionally attached to the story and all the characters because I've read it for such a long time. One of the best thing about this, is that it is super long. I've read 1550 in about 7-8 months and the story became a part of me. I recommend it to everyone who wants to read something very very good and has the patience to finish it. Every chapter feels good and not once I felt overwhelmed by the numbers of chapters. Even after 1550, the story is not finished and there is still a lot of things that are unsolved. THE WORLD BUILDING IS CRAZY GOOD TOO. After 1550, the world building in the real world and in the game is very very good. In the first 90 chapters, Grid is an asshole and he's greedy, but he has one of the best character developments I've ever read in my life. It's because the story is so long and the author has the patience to explain in details the change of Grid, little by little. EVERY CHAPTER IS SO COOL AND SO HYPED. The way Grid evolves and becomes Overgeared. The way he becomes a king, then a god. All his friends are interesting and it does not feel forced. I'm gonna say it again, this is the best piece of media I've ever read in my life. It's because Grid grew with me, I read Overgeared for such a long time and I enjoyed it for such a long time that I absolutely think it's awesome. I recommend it to anyone who like reading, and even people who don't like reading. It's just so so so good.
I'm not sure if this is for the manga or the light novel. I am up to date with the manga but am currently reading the light novel. I did notice some differences so far, but they're not that big I believe so far. I do believe that I like the manga better than the light novel because I can actually see the character's actions in comparison to the light novel. I'm not sure I can continue the light novel unless I can find a better translation because it's getting hard to understand in some chapters. This makes me miss a lot of context or events that are going on. It's also taking way too long to catch up.
Right off the bat, I will tell you that the MC is really dumb and can make stupid decisions throughout the journey. It's the typical OP MC but in this case, he is heavily relying on the weapons that he makes. I am more interested in how blacksmithing works, but so far there has been little information given. I'm also trying to figure out the goal of the story because I believe that'll get repetitive at some point if the author has no clear goal.
It's a very fun read! I read the webtoon first and was hooked! Then, I looked for the webnovel. At first, I was intimidated with the sums of chapters, it was over 1000! The most chapter I read previously was Omnicient Reader's Viewpoint, and I only read it halfway because I was distracted with another webtoon. It has over 500 chapters, but it was finished! So I braced myself and read again from the first chapter. And I'm glad I did because some plot was omitted in the webtoon!
Well, in this book, the protagonist was still very selfish. But there would be character development, so don't worry! And even though there were a lot of chapters, but it was fast-paced it didn't take a long time to read one book.
I started out hating the MC. He just kind of whines and rubs me the wrong way. That's why I stuck with the story though. I'm hoping for a story where the MC gets the chance to grow. So far, I like the premise of the story and the direction it is heading. There are some scenes that are oddly translated, but the meaning comes through clearly enough. The main focus so far is on the MC. The author only briefly touches upon the people within their social web. Admittedly, the MC isn't close to almost anyone, and so it makes sense. By the end of the book, the MC has a small amount of growth, character wise. It makes me hopeful.
A very nice story surrounding the rise of a very underwhelming and self critical loner main character to a very enjoyable, confident, and relationship focused main character. One of the more well written growths of a character I have read and it feels like you yourself are coming out of your shell. Didn't end up finishing, stopped around 1400 when I lost my place and got busy with other things. Very good system, and it's very entertaining how the story developed and shifts around him. I like how prevalent his relationships with friends become.
Set in a futuristic world in 2050 where everyone is obsessed with a virtual reality game called Satisfy. Crazy worlds collide and the inner workings of the game commence as we follow our main character through quite a lot of FUNNY but overall bad luck. Because learning how to play a game is hard enough. I really enjoyed this and honestly wasn't sure if I would! Id love to keep with the series and eventually read more!
Another great story!! The mc may be stupid at first but his character development is great along with his subordinate. It also didn't focus on romance which is great and it also have a unique plot where a company established a visual reality game that became a huge hit. At first, I thought that it is very long but after reaading it I can't get enough.
The story is set in the future, where everyone is playing an immersive virtual game. The MC is not the best player, but he is very persistent. He doesn't have the best luck and tends to make the wrong decisions.
I liked the art and the idea behind the story but found it very hard to follow. I kept getting lost and losing focus on the story.
Same review for each book: The system is nifty. The storytelling is pretty decent. The translation I have may not be this one. However, holy pants women-are-objects shows up a lot, and the gay people are treated as lesser/weird.
Read a few because the background is nifty, and I can put up with a lot, but I eventually just got sick of it.
Watching the MC rise from the bottom to the top is always pleasurable in this type of novel. Does he have a cheat? Yes. Does he have infinite plot armor? Yes. It was still a good read despite that. Sadly novel is taking forever to wrap up, the last few arcs have been too much for me.
One of the classics of the genre. Very funny story and the main character even gets rich while growing stronger and stronger. That's always a welcome bonus!
