Towers of Light #1

Light of Mine

Rate this book
Imagine your parents have been lost in darkness and only your faith can shine their way home.

The Tower of Light series insightfully examines childlike faith from the perspective of three small children, facing insurmountable problems… and succeeding, by faith and grace alone.

“This little light of mine” never seemed so bright, and keeping it shining never felt so imperative.

Light of Mine, introduces Lauren (12), Aiden (9), and Ethan (5) who bear the responsibility of keeping their Father’s newly constructed Tower of Light shining in his absence.

From the back cover:

Darkness is spreading through Zoura. Beyond the borders of the heathlands, innocent animals are being turned into monsters, and good men into pawns of the Dark One. Father has vanished after joining the Mighty Mercenaries and mother has gone missing in search of him.

Alone on the farm, twelve-year-old Lauren and her brave little brothers, Aiden and Ethan, must guard the Tower of Light that will guide both parents home. But when a hooded stranger is caught trespassing the farm, and a new bishop claims the church, confusion pervades their close-knit community. Will the children be able to recognize who is a threat to the Tower and who is there to help them protect it?

With little else but the aid of a trio of blessed pets, three mysterious weapons, and their growing faith, Lauren, Aiden, and Ethan find it is up to them to stop the agents of The Dark One from putting out the Light and dooming the heathlands to Darkness.

Fans of Little House on the Prairie will feel at home in the series’ classic farmstead setting, and the sincerity of the children’s love for one another— nurtured by the example of their parents—will bring a smile to readers and listeners of all ages.

Read Light of Mine aloud to your family or confidently give it to your middle grade reader, knowing he or she will be ensconced in a wholesome and riveting experience, beginning to end.

super cute middle grade Christian fantasy adventure // loved the development of the world and the characters // took me a little bit to get into (probably a side-effect of being a bit older than the target audience) but once I hit chapter 4 I was hooked! // a lot of great building of tension/real danger for the characters // can't wait to read book 2!

This is a beautiful story about a trio of siblings. Their father is a knight who fights the darkness, and they have a special lighthouse that helps keep the darkness at bay. But when their father goes missing in the war and their mother goes to find him, the children must hold fast to the things they've been taught and find out if their faith is strong and true.
Full of spiritual truth and everything epic fantasy should be... I loved book one so much I bought the whole series to read to my kids.

This is my first book, and really an 8 year journey from concept to publication. It began as a way for me to spend my time while I was traveling for work. Each week I would come home and read a new section to my kids. They loved that it was a fantastic story that included them. Once it was done, I actually sat on it for a couple of years because I couldn't justify in my own head the expense of editing it. But a good family friend helped out and got it over the finish line. That however, was not the end of the story, as this is the first edition. I later got the help of a professional editing team and have now turned it into a much better story with an ending that's more satisfying for everyone. Please check out the second editon.

A Rough Start to a Powerful Ending

I’ll be honest. It took me a while to get into this book because the melding of Little House on the Prairie meets Narnia felt a bit weird. While it took some adjusting, I can happily say that I’m a fan of Allen’s world now and I’m looking forward to the sequel!!! 😊

“Light of Mine” is a unique look at what happens when darkness cloaks itself as light. I would call this story an allegory and the plot kept me guessing...I seldom knew what would happen next! Lauren, Aiden, and Ethan are all fantastic main characters, and I loved getting to know each of their personalities and seeing them grow. Brokken’s character development is so organic that the kids all seem like people you could meet IRL.

I felt like the first few chapters were rough—thematically, grammatically, and character-wise. Some of the messages felt oversimplified and the children struck me as too perfect. Grammar errors popped up enough to pull me out of the story. However, by the mid-point, I was fully hooked and the “perfect children” problem vanished. The errors became WAY more infrequent and the writing improved. Brokken’s themes were also presented in an increasingly complex yet understandable way.

Ultimately, his story took (good) risks I wasn’t expecting, in a Christian fantasy aimed at middle-school homeschoolers. The way he integrated the song “This Little Light of Mine” was really cool, and the ending was SO epic I couldn’t put the book down! It was a powerful picture of the battle between good and evil.

I can’t say more without giving spoilers, but I definitely recommend this book for fans of Narnia, Little House, Wrinkle in Time, and Christian MG fantasy. Give it a read! 😀

Wonderful story!

In a world where miracles are born from honor and virtue, the darkness can truly be overcome. Three children must protect the Tower of Light against the intrigues of the Dark One. Unsure who to trust, they find strength in each other and in the powerful weapons their father has sent them. Allen has written a hearty adventure filled with exciting action that keeps the pages turning. His story is for people of all ages and all beliefs and inspires the reader to stand up for goodness, kindness, and honor. Keep writing Allen!

Light of Mine is written by Allen Brokken. The Audiobook version is narrated by Stacey Bradshaw. This is also book 1 in the Towers of the Light series. I have read the series out of order, and I had not read this one. I was excited to listen to it since I did enjoy some of the other books in the series.

First, the book is well written. It contains a powerful lesson that sometimes we may not know the answers to our questions, and that is OK. This book is geared towards middle grade. Usually, books in this genre my 10 year old son and I read together. He got too distracted while trying to listen, but he did enjoy what he did sit and hear. This book is about three siblings whose parents have gone missing. The siblings Lauren, Aiden and Ethan, must guard the Tower of Light that will guide both parents home. They are finding out that it's hard to know who to trust. The book focuses on the light shining brighter when the right things are done. However, Darkness is trying to squelch that light. The darkness wants the light to dim. The siblings have to stick together and work alongside each other.

The narration was clear, concise and easy to listen too. The narrator's voice flows nicely and drew you in with the different tones of voices that she used. I felt her voice fit the book nicely and it was an enjoyable read/listen.

Now that I have read/heard the first book in the series, the ones I read out of order have made sense. I would recommend this book in order so that everything falls into place. The characters are well written, the story flows nicely. This is geared toward middle grade readers.

Thank you to the author, publisher and Celebrate Lit for allowing me to read/listen to a copy of this book - all thoughts are my own.

Reading is always an adventure, and I love it when the opportunity arises to review a children’s or middle-grade novel. Not only is it a nice change of pace, especially as we navigate this pandemic, but it also offers a fresh perspective. When it comes to Christian literature, Jesus’ teachings about having the faith of a child become so much more clear as we witness the wholehearted and innocent trust that children possess. As Ethan remarks in the story, “Daddy says if we have a need, we pray. God takes care of it.” Instead of becoming jaded by the darkness of this world, we should keep our hearts soft toward others and love God above all else. After all, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it” (John 1:5).

“Light of Mine” by Allen Brokken begins the Towers of Light series, and I intend to read the second book when it releases. This is exactly the type of book that I devoured when I was growing up. It is billed as being in the vein of “Little House on the Prairie”, and I also see delightful similarities with Thomas L. Tedrow’s “The Younguns of Mansfield.” Because I usually avoid looking at the synopsis before reading a book, I expected this one to have a contemporary or even future setting, so the old-fashioned farm location charmed me. It is so refreshing to read a book that does not contain bullying or kids trying to be “cool”, but rather just being kids while also working hard and being respectful. Lauren, Aiden, and Ethan have their disagreements like any siblings, but they work together to solve the problems facing them, taking to heart their father’s words: “Children, as long as we stay faithful to the Lord, this Light will shine over the Heathlands. We must do our work the very best we can as if for the Lord. We must pray, read the Good Book, and honor the Sabbath…We must do our work obediently, with a happy heart, and the Light will always shine.”

Brokken astutely writes this novel to appeal to the younger generation. The theme of obedience runs throughout, but in such a way that it is not forced or repellant. Trying to put myself in the shoes of a middle-grader, I don’t think that this story will be too frightening. There are a few intense scenes, particularly at the end, that might cause distress in sensitive children, but I think that these episodes accomplish their purpose to unveil true darkness vs. true light. This is a very important distinction for children to learn how to make as they grow older, and “Light of Mine” certainly succeeds in helping them to do so. The animal characters in the story, Sparkle Frog, Daddy Duck, and Meow-Meow, lighten the tone and bring some cheerful relief. I did find the epilogue to be rather off-putting, however, although maybe for younger readers it would not be an issue; as it is, I thought that there would either be more resolution or there would be clearer direction as to where book two would go. This may just be my personal preference, however, and I am not deducting stars for it. Whether you are 10 or 100, “Light of Mine” encourages and inspires all of us to “let our light shine before others, that they may see our good deeds and glorify our Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16).

Allen Brokken’s Light of Mine is a beacon of wholesome, thrilling storytelling that masterfully blends the cozy charm of a classic family tale with the epic stakes of spiritual warfare. From the first page, this debut in the Towers of Light series establishes itself as a rare gem: a read-aloud adventure that is as gripping for children as it is meaningful for the adults sharing it with them.
The premise is both instantly engaging and profoundly comforting. Lauren, Aiden, and Ethan are not just characters; they feel like your own children or siblings brave, resourceful, and bound by a love that is their true source of strength. Left to guard the mysterious Tower of Light after their parents’ disappearance, their journey is a powerful, accessible allegory for putting on the “Armor of God.” The threats they face a hooded stranger, a confusing new bishop are perfectly calibrated to be suspenseful without being terrifying, making this an ideal choice for sensitive or younger readers.
Brokken’s greatest achievement is the book’s authentic tone. Fans of Little House on the Prairie will indeed feel at home in the sincere, pastoral setting and the children’s heartfelt interactions. The inclusion of “blessed pets” and “holy weapons” adds a delightful layer of imagination that brings the spiritual battle to vivid, tangible life. The story never preaches; instead, it immerses the reader in a world where faith is the most practical and powerful tool one has.
The included reading comprehension section and link to a downloadable unit study are not mere add-ons; they are testaments to the book’s value as an educational resource. This thoughtful integration makes Light of Mine a standout for homeschoolers and Christian educators seeking engaging, values-driven literature.
As the endorsement from a homeschool mom confirms, this is a book children will cherish and pass along with excitement. Light of Mine is more than a story; it’s an experience that fosters discussion, reinforces faith, and reminds every reader, young and old, of the imperative to let their own light shine. A beautiful, 5-star beginning to a truly special series.

My Thoughts on Light of Mine:
I am always on the look-out for good children’s books. Lately, my children have really begun to like fantasy books. They’ll look at the library and see some that look interesting and bring them to me to see if they can check them out. All too often I have to tell them no, that they can’t get the book until I’ve had a chance to research the author and the book. Or sometimes, I have to grab the e-copy from the library and read it myself first.

With this book, I knew that I wouldn’t have to pre-read it. The author is a Christian father so I have to think that he also has faced wanting his children to read good wholesome books. Knowing that I did still pre-read this book because I wanted to be able to give it an honest review.

My honest review is. . . we can’t wait for books two and three to come out later this year!!

This is a great fun read and my kids have all been taking turns reading it. Every child who can read chapter books has read this book as quickly as they could because the next child was ready to snatch it from them!

We highly recommend this book and can’t wait for the rest of the series.

I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.

Allen Brokken has written a story for older elementary students based on the concept of the Sunday School song This Little Light of Mine. Light of Mine is book one in Brokken’s new series The Towers of Light.
This intermediate level fantasy novel has several things that will appeal to older elementary children. The first being the children left alone by their parents. Lauren is the oldest at twelve, Aiden is nine, and Ethan is just five. What pre-teen doesn’t think they are old enough to take care of things while their parents are gone. This age group will also enjoy the fight of good over evil and understand the difficulty the children have in determining who is on the side of Light and who is on the side of Darkness. The book does seem a bit didactic and simplistic at times which may turn some children off to the plot.
Overall, I think this is a good book for children. Light of Mine sounds like a story parents may read to their children at bedtime. Homeschool families may be interested in using the book. I look forward to reading more in Allen Brokken’s series The Towers of Light.
There would not be a problem with adding Light of Mine to a K-12 Christian school library. It is appropriate for upper elementary and middle school students.
I want to thank Celebrate Lit for the complementary copy of Light of Mine. This is my honest review.

Often my son will read books that interest him and review them for me. This particular book was one of those. He wasn't as impressed as I had hoped, so I may have to read this book myself and see what I think. I am sure our opinions will differ some, as I am a bit more old-fashioned than this younger generation.
This is what he had to say:

"At 15, I enjoy reading fantasy books. At first glance, this book looked like it would fit that category. However, it wasn't quite what I was hoping. I didn’t enjoy this book for quite a few reasons. First, I found the characters to be a bit uninteresting. Second, the structure of the world that Mr. Brokken created also frustrated me. It seems to try to blend things from earth with things of a fantastical nature, but the way it goes about doing that leaves it lacking in originality, or lore that I found appealing. I feel my disappointment with this book was due to the fact that I didn't relate to the mindset of any of the main characters, as I am quite a few years older than them. However, younger children and preteens may very well find it a great read, so I would recommend they give it a try. But I am not sure older teens would enjoy it as much."

I received this book free courtesy of the author and celebrate lit. All opinons are my own and I was not asked to give a positive review.

It is always hard to find a Christian fiction book for kids these days that is well written and able to keep their attention. Light of Mine does both. This story is engaging and keeps a pace that makes you want to keep reading. Growing up on the like of CS Lewis, one of my great disappointments with newer Christian children’s fiction is that it tends to make the reading level low and basic. I was pleasantly surprised that this author does not do that.

Growing up I would sing This Little Light of Mine in Sunday School, children’s choir, and with my parents. Seeing the connection in this book and how the author cleverly used the song was thought provoking. Even as an adult, it made me stop and think. The hope the book gives was an encouragement as well.

Listening to the book made it even more fun. The narrator has a great voice and really brings the book to life. When my kids were young, we would listen to audiobooks in the car or at night we would sit around the stereo…I could see my kids wanting to listen to this book and really enjoying it.

My only caution….This book might be intense for some readers.

I would recommend this for older elementary children and up. It would be a great read for homeschooling children.

I was given a copy of this audiobook by Celebrate Lit. No monetary compensation was received. All opinions are my own.

What I think you should know:
Light of Mine is a Middle Grades Christian Fantasy by Allen Brokken. It is the first book in the towers of light series. It is set in a fictional land where Darkness is taking over. When their parents have to leave to fight the darkness three siblings are left to be the caretakers of the light.

What I thought about this book:

As a mom of a YA reader, I loved this book. Brokken presented the battle for Faith in an interesting way. Each of the siblings cared an important part of the story so it would be good to read aloud with your family in addition to having your YA read it. I enjoyed how Brokken made it harder for the children to distinguish who was the good guy and who wasn’t, it could open the door for wonderful family discussions.

As a reader of YA fiction I enjoyed this book. Brokken has written a very interesting story about faith. I enjoyed the characters as well as the setting of the story. I look forward to the next book in the series.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Celebrate Lit, this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.

Light of Mine is a Christan novel. It’s aimed at middle-grade readers, and features three fictitious, light-based tools, creatures that have been blessed by God, and a family devoted to God.

The main characters are Lauren, Aiden, and Ethan. Their father disappeared when he went out to make weapons for the Mighty Mercenaries, and their mother was captured when she went looking for him. Their goal is to stop the darkness from spreading and to find their parents. Meanwhile, the Dark one and his pawns try to stop them. Lauren, Aiden, and Ethan must ignite the Towers of Light before the darkness covers all of Zoura.

Light of Mine made me feel more aware of how sin (the darkness) works in our world, like I should be cautious wherever I am, and to put my faith into God alone. God is the only constant source of love, strength, and righteousness, He is always faithful.

I recommend Light of Mine to those who are looking for an adventurous and imaginative story of faith.

After reading reviews of this book for the past three years, I finally got around to reading it—amazing how long a book can sit in the Kindle before it makes it to the top of the TBR list! What a story. I don’t normally like fantasy, and I easily put this down during the first few chapters, but by the time I reached the 75% mark, I couldn’t stop. I kept reading until I reached the conclusion—and then wished that I had the other books in the series. My children had the same response, and begged me to buy the other books. They wanted them badly enough that they told me they wanted to do the unit studies with the others books, as they were doing with this first one, so I ordered the others. Now, we can’t wait for them to arrive! One warning: I am not allowing my children who are younger than ten to read the books. There are some graphic descriptions of demonic creatures and the death of a person during a fight.

I was hooked when I saw the title, as I grew up singing a song like it. "This little light of mine" is the song. Would this book live up to my expectations? Actually, it surpassed them. It's full of scripture, faith. and a good storyline too! So much scripture is included in this book, I could read it again, and again.

It focuses on knowing God and obedience. Any age can enjoy this book, but I'd say ages 6 and up. Books like this one should be in libraries and churches so more people can read it. I like how light fights the darkness in this book, and how much these three children worked their way into my heart. I am going to be waiting for the next book.

Thanks to Celebrate Lit for my copy. This review is mine, containing my thoughts and opinions of this book, left freely.

It appears that at some point before publishing, "Light of Mine" was originally called something else as each of the pages has the header of "Darkness Cloaks the Land" and the standard wording about the book being a work of fiction at the beginning of the book calls the book "Darkness Cloaks the Land". There were also some typos. The book is definitely written for children and had little life lessons given about how they needed to obey and let their light shine. The setting was interesting with it being a fantasy twist to the frontier. I liked how the children worked together to solve their problems. The book is full of biblical truths woven through.

I enjoyed this audiobook. The narrator did a good job giving the characters voices. I really liked the innocence of the children was so refreshing. I liked the whole story and really did enjoy the narrators way of telling the story.

It is a book that I'm happy to share with my kids and even my little one (7 year old). All of them listened and enjoyed the story with me. There were learning moments from it and teachable moments when they had questions. I just really loved the whole of the book here.

5/5

I’m not sure quite how to rate this one. I appreciate the spiritual analogies woven throughout the book, but at times the storyline is confusing and dialogue feels forced and clunky. I was also annoyed by the smattering of typos and grammar errors throughout the book. It could do with a more thorough professional editing. But my kids (ages 7, 9, and 11) loved the story and are begging for the rest of the series, so it seems the author does know his target demographic quite well.

As a content warning: the story took an unexpectedly dark turn in the last few chapters, including terrifying creatures and one character’s gory death. My kids handled it okay but I know it could be really troubling for extra sensitive kids.

Light of Mine, Book 1 of the Towers of Light Series is definitely a read that older elementary/preteens will enjoy. We listened to it on a road trip, and my children really enjoyed it! It kept them interested, and they had several gasps and giggles while listening. They wanted to continue to listen to the audiobook after our road-trip was over, so it definitely caught their attention. The narrator was great and really brought the book to life! We highly recommend this audio book, and it’s the perfect listen on your next family road-trip this summer!!

This is one of the best middle grade fantasy books I’ve “read”! The author crafted a story that middle grade readers will love, all while teaching them about the hard things God calls us to do.

The narrator really brought the story to life for me. Her passion and skill come through clearly and make you want to keep listening as the three children must journey to stop The Dark One.

This is such an incredible story of light vs dark, and I think your middle-grader will enjoy it too!

Lauren, Aiden, and Ethan are siblings left alone to run the farm and guard the Tower of Light in their parents' absence. They are confused and vulnerable when a new bishop comes to their community bringing confusing and contradictory instructions. When an unwanted guardian is sent to stay with them and a suspicious stranger seems to be creeping around polluting their water source, damaging property, and possibly trying to destroy the Light in the Tower, the children are moved to use the weapons their father left for them. Will goodness overcome evil? Light of Mine is sure to be a page turner for the reader.

A great fiction book that reads like a Chronicles of Narnia style book. This book, first book in the Tower of Light series, teaches about discernment. Due to the content and events that happen within the book, this would be a book geared towards upper elementary and middle school aged kids. Discussion questions in the back of the book can double as an English lesson if you’re homeschooling. Overall, this book serves as a great reminder (even for adults!) to remain strong in God’s word. When we continue to live by the Good Book (Bible) the light within us will burn so bright that our discernment will never be extinguished. Happy reading!! 📚

After my brothers raved about this book, I knew I ought to read it sometime…and I happened to notice it would fit one of my reading challenge’s categories recently, so I picked it up. What a fascinating story! I did struggle with some elements of the book—the editing needed a lot of help, and the book itself wasn’t laid out professionally (it looks almost like a printed Microsoft Word document). The story itself, though, was fairly good and has given me food for thought. A good read, with an intriguing setting. I’m hoping to read more in the series eventually.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book, and this is my honest opinion of it.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Inspiring, Hopeful, and Deeply Engaging

Tower of Light is a beautifully written story that blends faith, family, and courage in a way that feels both heartfelt and compelling. Reading about the children trying to keep the Tower shining after losing both parents genuinely moved me, it reminded me of the quiet strength I’ve seen in kids facing real challenges. The tension around the church and the mysterious stranger adds a layer of intrigue that kept me turning pages. The frontier setting, the siblings’ bond, and their determination to stand firm in the Light make this a powerful, uplifting read. Perfect for readers who enjoy stories filled with faith, resilience, and hope.

An Intense Book but Full of Hope

I don’t read a lot of middle grade but am always looking for great stories for that age group. This one is exceptional for several reasons.
A strong story with great pacing, twists, and turns
Likable characters who are realistic. Aiden, Lauren, and Ethan try but don’t always make the best choices.
Great world building. I liked the American frontier meets fantasy setting.

I loved the audio book, as the narrator did a good job. The story launches straight in, feeling like a pioneers setting, and the tower of light is introduced.
The three children make wonderful characters and I loved seeing their faith grow and shine. Very exciting story, especially near the end which my kids found a little too frightening, but once they knew how it ended they were fine. Beautiful story.

I really enjoyed Light of Mine. We were blessed with a copy of the book, the unit study, and the audiobook. What an amazing tale! I had seen the author and the book advertised but I had not had the chance to read the series.

I would recommend Light of Mine to Christian parents who are looking for good literature for their older elementary aged children.

I added the rest of the series to my wish list.

Great book for Christian teens

This book is a great story of light conquering darkness. The battle has some very slight gore depicted if that is something you try to limit with your children. Other than that I would say this is a great read for the whole family.

But it's done with such a child like innocence that it's very much a joy to read.
