Florentina Clarke has enough problems. She's turning into a vampire, has been fired into the far-future by participation in an ill-advised science experiment, and has discovered that her future self is a general. She signs on to a small, fast smuggling ship, but everything isn't what it seems. Can she figure out what the ship is up to before its secrets destroy her?
Shadow Eclipse: Voyage is the first book in the Shadow Eclipse series, following the adventures of Florentina Clarke across time and space.
'Star trek, but with time-travelling space vampires.'
E. M. Gale is a scientist working in the areas of unconventional computing, machine learning and computational chemistry. She has been writing fiction since she was a child, but had no success due to her limiting herself to only ever writing the first few chapters of novels. She did however manage to finish her PhD thesis on molecular machines, although she was disappointed that all the cool sword-fighting scenes were cut. Stressed out from this effort, she left science 'forever' (which turned out to be a year and a half) and finally figured out how to finish a novel, and then did it eight more times just to check it worked. Since then, she's also written a gritty crime novel under a pseudonym, and has a gritty, cyberpunk series underway. When she's not writing, she can be found practicing martial arts, making music with code and playing around with artificial intelligence.
After a brisk and entertaining start, this gets increasingly bogged-down in its own universe as it goes on. And, boy, does it go on. At a thousand pages in the print version, this became a severe slog, and ends in a unsatisfactory way. A second novel seems promised, but this came out in 2019, and has yet to be forthcoming. Maybe the writer got bored of the whole thing too?
The cover of this book pitches sci-fi milfic / space opera yet the blurb read more like urban fantasy, to the point I wondered if there hadn't been some terrible mix-up in the process somewhere. In actual fact both were true as it is more or less an urban fantasy in space (leaning more on the opera than milfic end of the spectrum). Given that these are two of my favorite genres, it's probably unsurprising that I like this one. Quite a lot as it turns out - I'm certainly going to be reading the sequel (). Unusually for either genre, has a female lead who, while strong, is prone to ... poor life choices. I liked the setting a lot, there seems to be a decent amount of world-building underpinning the whole thing - the science used seems credible and the - broadly, the setting has a lot of potential.
I will warn people that this is a _long_ book (more epic fantasy than urban fantasy) - which is one of my main complaints: I feel it is really two books and the flow of the story beats feel like two books, so I don't know why the author left it like this.
As I started with, I struggle to pigeon hole this. Is it urban fantasy? yes. sci-fi? yes. I guess the closest touchstones I can think of are shadowrun (if it was space opera rather than cyberpunk) or the deathstalker books. I would also look to Micheal Scott-Earle's books (Star justice in particular), although the gender of the hero puts it outside his normal segment . But at the end of the day, time-travelling vampires in space - what's not to like?
Our heroine has more problems and fewer choices than seems right even for a time-traveling vampire. Things get even more interesting once she gets aboard.
This is book one of the series.
This is an intriguing combination of SF and the paranormal. While the two are by no means mutually exclusive, it is not often than you combine space ships and vampires. Just saying. The story is well written with a very intriguing plot that has a lot going on, and I don't mean just the spaceships and vamps. The setting is well developed and actually fits together well, which is saying something. I particularly like the characters which are a very intriguing mix, starting of course with our heroine. Overall, it was a fast paced and somewhat bizarre journey, but I really enjoyed it and look forward to more from this author.
Highly recommended.
I receive an ARC from Hidden Gems for review pursposes.
A cool book that ticks all yer fantasy, sci-fi and horror boxes. I loved watching Clarke get into scrapes almost as much as I enjoyed finding out how she got out of them! Set in a universe that has time travel AND spaceships AND vampires AND Orcs, there's enough interplanetary fun and frolics for everyone. A must for all geeky genre fans of all the geeky genres!
A long book, which was paced nicley, I never thought if putting it down. But, despite the length it ended unsatisfactorly. Obviously some plotlines need to be solved in later books but this was an episode not a story. The plot was intricate and pleasing, so I was not as appalled with this books lame ending as with many, but it was still lame.
My favorite vampire book. The characters felt believable and the story was well paced with only a few very short hiccups of monologues. I immediatly searched for a sequel after I finished it and was disappointed to see there is no sequel book yet, however i will continue checking back monthly as Clark and her pals have really stuck with me even months after finishing it
I loved this book! Simple as that. I would highly recommend this to any friend for its humor, plot, attention to detail, characters, and fun. It was a great read, and I loved the length. Long but with so much more to see in the future.
This is a fantastic and well written book. An intense story line that holds your attention as you get caught up in the fierce twists and hot chemistry.
Thrown forward in time a vampire with a Phd travels space just trying to survive. Whats not to love? I really enjoyed this and can't wait to read what happens next. I received a free ARC of this via Booksprout
