Rachel Harroway, a homicide detective with the ability to see the dead, balances the responsibilities of being a mother alongside her life's calling to guide orphaned spirits home. Teaming up with her long time homicide partner Jensen Peak, she hunts for the latest crafty killer to strike in her little corner of the Appalachian Mountains. The investigation gets personal when her adopted daughter enters the crosshairs. How far will Rachel go to protect her own? How much will she be willing to give up?
Rachel has solved many murders with help from the spirits of those who have passed. Rumors exist about her being weird, but things are changing.
Owen did bring an end to the suffering of girls he rescued. But only at their request. And he lingers around Rachel after she shoots him in self defense.
Is Owen a hinderance? A help? More than a little disturbing to see hanging out with her adopted daughter Mallory?
What might happen if Mallory tries too hard to see what happens if she surrenders to the Gift.
Creepy and uncanny.

This installment seemed very short and rushed in comparison to the other books. The storyline progressed very quickly as did the evolution of the characters. There seems to be a few loose threads on the fringes of the story, but I will wait to see if they are tied up in the next two books. There has also been more graphic violence in these recent books and I am hoping I am not headed into unnecessary sensationalism. We will see what unfolds in the next book.
The writer weaves good plots in his books, but the reader gets distracted by many mistakes in basic grammar; and by odd segments where omniscience interrupts the books' first-person narratives. The main characters aren't adequately described at the start of each story. A good editor easily could change the books from 3-star to 4-star ratings, maybe better. The plots kept me hooked.
Rachel has used her gift to help solve murders. But things get personal when her adopted daughter gets involved. Who is the Owen guy? Is he there to help or does he have something else on his mind...like Mary? Rachel has to be careful with this one! I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book from Booksprout.
These books were excellent and I really hated to finishing the last one. The characters changed through out the books and as new characters came, the story became more complex and you wondered how the story would ever work out. I miss these characters already. Hope you enjoy the books.
Paranormal mysteries are fascinating to read but hard for me to swallow. I guess I'm just the kind of person that must see to believe. The imagination is a wonderful thing. Donovan uses it well.
I love J.S Donovan’s books and this book did not disappoint. The story is very well written and kept my interest. A hard book to put down. I definitely recommend reading.

This was not my normal book to read. The characters were well rounded and had great interactions. This was just not cup of tea. Well written for those who enjoy the paranormal.
Loved that is is essentially three mini stories linked sequentially. Good characters, believable and human (well, mostly human). The reasoning of the main Orphan is so true to form of the character. Thumbs up
Ad usual it's another great book. I love Rachel, and even more now that she's a mom. I love the chemistry between her and Peak. There's a part of me that hopes they get together. Fingers crossed!
