“Because freedom always burns bright in the human heart, no matter what system of government it lives under at the moment.”
This premise seems to me grittier and hardcore. The cruelty unleashed by The League is horrific, unrelenting in their destructive minds. The AI controlled governments are more powerful, the high tech weapons deadlier. The storyline is overpowering and captivating from the beginning. There are thoughtful and reflective connotations about politics and the way how every ideology has transpired throughout human history, how the greed for control and power has never changed. Mr. Reed certainly knows how to spin a tale and takes great attention to detail in his twist on history. Practically reads itself. A truly engrossing and exciting installment!

Julia Thrall, the Resistance Agent known as Angel, popped into existence inside the gaming environment of Grand Central Station in New York, 1985. Julia knew that the game’s designers, under the direction of a government office trying to control everyone’s behavior, were engaging in a sort of reverse intermittent reinforcement where a newcomer who escaped “punishment” for his or her actions the first couple of times they indulged, such as immediate death in the game by various methods, would be deeply disappointed when they eventually were punished early, probably killed at the start of the game. Ultimately needing to make money on these virtual games, the company, Sergio Productions, often made “penalties” much softer for bad behavior so rewards could be found even among the negative feedback. So Sergio Productions used the gaming for profit while the government used it for social engineering, trying to influence the way everyone thinks about everything in the Republic.

Julia headed to her destination down in the subway station. She went through an unlocked door leading to a service corridor along the back wall, tapped the wall until she could communicate with people in other gaming instances, even in Republican territory. But a man’s voice yelled, “Stop right there. Hands up!” She saw an NYPD officer aiming an ancient revolver at her while three other men stepped out. A fifth man joined them, dressed as a detective. When the first cop tried to cuff her, she knocked his gun away and held him in front of her as the others shot. She grabbed his fallen gun and shot those three. She ran to the glitch and jumped back into the corridor. When a bullet hit her, she felt the pain in real life although there was no blood.

More shots were fired and Julia was hit twice. The detective said, “We want her alive for interrogation. Don’t let her exit the game just yet. We’re zeroing in on her location IRL,” and she shot him. As cops surrounded her with nets and rope, it was time to get out of there. So she jumped in front of the train and exited the game! However surveillance drones followed her outside of the game tracking her neural link, so she and Sergeant Gina Wilcox incinerated it and tried to blend in with the crowd.

Armando Morales, Director of SSI Sporades, recognized that Republican agents were on Sporades and they were attempting to warn their Navy about Operation Starfold. These people were not amateurs!

When Thespar's newest weapon, Starfold, is placed in orbit, Angel has no way of warning the fleet. But she is one lady who thinks fast on her feet! What will she do now to help the Navy deal with this latest threat?

If you like stories that take place in and around virtual reality game worlds you will this story. Full of action and surprises. Here you have space opera and game world collide for a thrilling action-packed adventure. So much going on you won't be able to stop turning the pages. I think this may be my fave in the series yet. Highly recommend.

This is book seven in this grand space opera series. The book can be read as a standalone (this was my first book in the series) and it works just fine. I am sure there are a lot of details and references from previous books which I may have missed, but nothing that left me scratching my head and trying to figure out what was going on. That being said, I think I will read this one again once I start from the beginning and that might give me a completely new experience. Either way works.

What I did get here was an intense, action filled space opera story with a quick moving plot that started at a run and never let up. The writing is excellent, the setting highly detailed, and the characters solid. This was an immersive experience where I was drawn into the story and had a hard time putting it down. Overall, an excellent read and I am looking forward to more, including both earlier and future books.

Highly recommended.

Star League strikes back!

Alternate universe, SF advanced technology, space opera, ultra capitalism, space pirates

A new weapon is unleashed against the forces of the Planetary Republic, while Julia and Wilcox try themselves at being partisans. Excellent editing. Fun.
