When you hit rock bottom, the only option left is to rise.
When damaged, elusive rock guitarist Spook Mortensen reunites with his former band to record a new album, it sets him on an unavoidable collision course with his former girlfriend, feisty temptress, producer, Allegra Hutton.
Alle has never given up on her man. Their chemistry remains off the charts, as undeniable now after months apart as the first time they met. Moreover, she sees through Spook’s pain and self-recriminations to the damaged soul beneath.
Only by winning his trust, can Alle hope to mend his heart and secure their future. That means surrendering herself to the deviant desires he’s kept in check most of his adult life. Desires her family and the world are still judging him for. Desires that mean, she’ll have to beg him to make her his, while pretending she doesn’t want him to.
Revive is an angsty, spicy, heart-wrenching rockstar romance with flawed characters, a damaged man in need of redemption, a feisty, tenacious heroine who always rises to the fight and knows when to hold fast to a good thing, and feels…lots of feels.
This is the final novel in the Off the Record series and also forms part of the wider Black Halo world. These book are intended to be read in order.
Madelynne Ellis is a New York Times & USA Today bestselling author of over 50 erotic romance novels.
Madelynne lives in the UK, not far from the Welsh border with her partner, family, & assorted pets. She is currently sipping rapidly cooling decaf coffee, listening to loud music, & indulging her obsession for tattooed bad boys.
It’s hard not to love a man who is struggling as best he can to keep going. Alle has never given up on Spook even if he ghosted her. Spook needs Alle even more than he knows but when your head is messing with you sometimes you don’t realize things until it’s too late.
Spook is breaking out little by little when he agrees to record a new album with Black Halo with Alle as the music producer. I loved following Spook’s story with a no holds bar look at how depression and anxiety can run your life. This author didn’t pull any punches as this is an “in your face” book that is a huge page turner.
There is nothing like a five-star rock romance and when Ms. Ellis’ is the author you know its going to bring you to your knees.
I’m not going to rate this series because I’m know I’m not the intended audience. But I read the series more out of curiosity than anything else.
Please don’t read further if you don’t want spoilers.
I just don’t understand - or relate to - Allegra and Spook’s relationship. She is desperately in love with him. He loves her but he’s not monogamous (he still hooks up with his band mate, Xane, who is also in a relationship with multiple people. Why? because she’s just not enough for him. I guess if you had to pick a term you could say he’s polyamorous. I personally don’t get it but I also have no problem with it. Each to their own and all that. What my problem (and o my problem) was the fact that Allegra is not. She’s all about Spook. If she weren’t monogamous either, then I reckon this could have been a really fun read. I don’t like one-sided relationships (meaning one person is more invested than the other regardless if everyone agrees - even though you know Allegra wishes Spook would only ever be with her). Uneven playing fields piss me off so I can’t help but think they won’t work out long term. Or maybe they will because Allegra seems to be happy to accept whatever Spook wants, as long as he doesn’t leave her. And that way of thinking baffles me 🤷🏻♀️

4.25stars-REVIVE is the fourth instalment in Madelynne Ellis’ contemporary, adult OFF THE RECORD dark, erotic, rock romance focusing on rock guitarist Jan ‘Spook’ Mortensen, and sound engineer Allegra ‘Alle’ Hutton. REVIVE should not be read as a stand alone as it pick up after the events and cliff hanger of book three REFRAIN.
NOTE: Due to the nature of the story line premise, there may be triggers for more sensitive readers.
Told from dual omniscient third person perspectives (Alle and Spook) REVIVE is the culmination of the previous three instalments in which Spook Mortensen’s life had spiralled out of control. With his past controlling his present, Spook Mortensen had gone into hiding, five months without his band, or the woman he loved but five months meant time to ruminate and battle the demons alone. Reuniting with the band forced Spook to reconsider his life going forward but he struggled to face the woman who held his heart. Betrayal and vengeance, mistrust and misunderstanding threatened Jan Mortensen every day of his life; using his friend as his anchor meant admitting the truth about his fears and his need for the people he trusted the most.
Throughout the series Alle Hutton had an uphill battle focusing on the man that she loved but there were people in Alle’s life that thought they knew better, never anticipating the fall-out or cost of their betrayal. Alle’s pain was magnified by Spook’s inability to trust, to trust the woman who was one part of the whole that would save his life.
REVIVE is a story of loss and survival; forgiveness and trust; family and friendships, relationships and love. The premise is heart breaking and emotional; the romance continues to struggle with issues of trust and communication; the characters remain broken yet struggling to heal. REVIVE ends on a happily ever after-for now. Like several members of Black Halo, forever is never a guarantee, sometimes perceived betrayal comes at a cost.
Don't let anyone tell you that rockstar romance is shallow! Spook and Alle are such compelling people. It is hard to remember how young they are since they have been through so much. I devoured this particular set of stories because of their complexity. Alle knows what she wants as soon as she spends some time with Spook earlier in their tale, but she has to learn to back off and let him come to her while still letting him know that she loves him and will be right there when he is ready. I liked how the author dealt with the effects of abuse seriously. So many, like Spook, blame themselves, believe what other people say, misinterpret what they overhear, and assume the worst possible outcomes. Even though Spook and Alle share their preferences, he feels bad for feeling pleasure, while she does not. Her family is hideous, but she sticks to her lover against them. There are so many plot points and twists, and Madelynne does a masterful job of keeping everything straight. (Well, not quite, but you know what I mean.) Xane's role in Spook's healing cannot be overlooked. He does what he must for his friend at the expense of his own relationship, and we admire him for it. I look forward to the rest of this series, which will focus on Rock Giant but hopefully update the other relationships as well. I received an ARC from the author and left this review voluntarily.
Rock guitarist Spook Mortensen reunites with his former band - Black Halo, to record a new album at Xane's uncle's island. Spook has plenty of demons that he needs to get help with healing. He is finally seeing a therapist, and hopefully they can work on his past and his mental health.
The band calls Allegra Hutton to come up as the music producer on the band's new album also. She hasn't seen Spook in close to 8 months, they are texting and talking on the phone, but seeing someone in person after so long makes her quite nervous.
Alle has never given up on Spook, she knows he will heal, but, in his own time. She has stopped talking with her brothers, and they are no longer in the picture. She feels horrible about what two of the brothers did to Spook. She knows they are the reason he doesn't want to be around her.
Will Spook be able to continue with the band? Will he be ok after some therapy and some Alle love?
I did receive a free ARC copy of this book. I am freely leaving an honest review.
Revive is the fourth installment d in Madelynne Ellis’s unforgettable and unputdownable Off The Record Series as well as the conclusion to Spook and Allie’s epic love story and a must read for anyone who is a fan of the following Tropes 🖤Dark and erotic rock romance 🖤forced proximity 🖤A stubborn Heroine 🖤All the feels 🖤a flawed and damaged rock guitarist 🖤second chances 🖤and so much more . To be completely up front Madelynne is a fairly new author to me so when I first came across the signup for this series I really dld not know what I was getting into . But I am and have always been a lover of Rockstar romances so I decided to give it a shot and I’m so freaking happy I did . I’ve been hooked from the very first book . Allie and Spooks story was anything but easy . It’s intense and magnetic . It’s dark and raw and gritty and extremely emotional to the point that there will be so many moments you’ll feel like your heart is being crushed and tears will be streaming down your face . It’s simply one of the most beautifully written books I’ve read this summer . A must read
This is the fourth book in this phenomenal series, and this is Spook and Allegra’s story. Spook is a flawed and damaged rock guitarist, who reunites with his former band members of “Black Halo” to record a new album. Alle is a feisty and tenacious producer, who is Spook’s former girlfriend, and she sees through Spook’s damaged soul. The chemistry between these two is combustible and undeniable, and they complement each other perfectly. This is a well written story which has angst, family, friendships, trust, romance, redemption, healing, emotions, second chances, and love, which leads to an entertaining, unpredictable, and steamy addictive page turner. I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.
This is the fourth book for Spook and Alle but will they get their HEA. Alle is now finally going to see Spook after he ghosted her but will it be everything she wants. Things are never easy between them but Alle will do anything to get Spook back. So much emotion and plenty of drama but also so much love. A must read but it might break your heart at times. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.
A monumental ending to this epic love story, we have been on a very emotional journey spanning four books in Allie and Spook’s rock story romance, it needed to be a 4 book series to truly capsulate the depth of Spook's demons and for us to truly understand Allie and the groups love for Spook, he is now back to record with the band, and although Spook and Allie have not seen in each in over months they have to get the lines of communication open now about to come face to face is it now their time for their HEA.
I could not put this down! The last track of Alle and Spook's story was as magnetic and intense as ever, but, this time, the clouds were parting to allow for some sun to start shining. Spook's depression and anxiety were always going to re-emerge. This is not a condition that just disappears. It is one which can have a tenacious grip, but, at last, the conditions sound him are gaining some kind of alliance and positivity. Alle's tenacity and love, as well as Xane's, are essential ingredients for this. I loved this book. And, mark my words, it is both intense and I tensely hot! It is also filled with hope, which is always a wonderful thing. This book brings back balance and a future. Fabulous 💖 💖💖💖💖
I’ve awaited this book a very long time, didn’t realise it would be completely about Spook, would have liked more info on Xane and Dani,in honesty first three Black Halo books are my favourites,Xane and Dani, sorry really that this is the end
