Chrys Fey is a disabled, tattooed author of books featuring heroines of steel. Her Disaster Crimes series is a unique blend of romance, disasters, and crimes, influenced by her own experiences with natural disasters. The conclusion of her series inspired her to create TheFightingChance.org, a resource for domestic violence survivors. On her blog, WritewithFey.com, she supports, empowers, and teaches fellow writers.
Fey got the idea for her first book when she was twelve and discovered a rusted screw with a crooked tip buried in grass. That screw was a key to an unknown world with an extraordinary character born in heaven.
She is a fur baby mom of four rescued cats. For fun, she photographs antiques, makes playlists, and creates flip cup paintings of Avrianna’s nebula. She loves Halloween, autumn, and gargoyles.
My Rating: 4.5 Stars They’re married, they have their dream home, and they have survived everything that both Nature and madmen have thrown at them. Their careers are going well, Beth as a self-defense instructor, Donovan as a dare devil race driver. Time for Beth and Donovan to think about a family, or it should be until once again, disaster strikes and when it does, it comes in deadly droves.
Fires anywhere are terrifying and deadly, but in Florida, there is the perfect combination for fires that refuse to be put out. When a fire starts in the drought-ridden area of Central Florida, Beth and Donovan discover it is in their neighborhood, and their home could be next. What they didn’t know was that the fire was intentional and it was directed at them. As if raised from the flames of Hell itself, a monster from Beth’s past is back and he will stop at nothing to seek his vengeance and he won’t stop at until he gets it.
When intentionally created accidents begin happening, they are forced to go into hiding but they soon will discover that even police protection may not be enough. They have survived before, but this time they may not be so lucky…because nowhere is safe when evil comes calling.
Chrys Fey’s FLAMING CRIMES is the latest in the Disaster Crimes series and this time out the danger is more than sizzling as two people are forced once again to fight for their lives and the future they have dreamed of. Both Donovan and Beth are strong characters, one being more seemingly laid back, the other still suffering from past events, never to feel fully safe. They play off each other’s strengths, with Beth being the more hot-headed of the two, then again, she has good reason.
I do enjoy this series, not quite a crime soap opera, but clearly these two are magnets for danger and adventure without even trying! Chrys Fey has done a great job keeping the action and tension running as hot as a raging inferno while making the romance feel sweetly real.
I received a complimentary ARC edition from Chrys Fey!
Series: Disaster Crimes - Book 4 Publisher: The Wild Rose Press, Inc (January 3, 2018) Publication Date: January 3, 2018 Genre: Crime | Romance Print Length: 220 pages Available from: Amazon | Barnes & Noble For Reviews & More: http://tometender.blogspot.com
Beth is working hard to overcome the physical and psychological damage done from the Hawaiian honeymoon and the tsunami they faced. So far, we’ve had a hurricane, an earthquake, and a tsunami, so, seeing we are in California, it’s only right we have a fire. Sorry if it sounds like I will enjoy it, but…
Fires must be one of the most frightening things to face. It’s alive, “it breathes, eats, and moves”.
First thing on the agenda, though, is they are trying to make a baby.
I love Grandma, and this is what she had to say about that: “Maybe it’s the sperm.”
Donovan: “My sperm is fine.”
Grandma: “Well, maybe you’re not doing it right.”
Donovan: I’m doing it right!”
Grandma: “How do you know?”
Donovan: “Believe me…I know!”
Grandma: “Hmm. Well, if you need any pointers…”
Beth teaches self defense classes and her helper is a little too hands on. Could there be cause for alarm? I didn’t like that Beth didn’t get rid of him right off the bat. Beth’s clients are abused women, so I’m sure she doesn’t want to expose them to more of that.
Chrys deals with sensitive issues of women’s abuse, sexual assault, and rape in a great way, and if you take any self defense classes from Beth…well…you will be able to hold your own.
I loved it when they went to the batting cages…when Beth did the splits…laughing out loud funny.
The car chase through the fire was wildly exciting, exhilarating and dangerous.
Chrys writes about their love life in sweet, innocent words, but don’t take them for pushovers. The dialogue is full of sweet sexual innuendo that I can’t help but smile at. Romance, we have a lot of romance, but when the danger comes, it hits them both. But…who? Why?
Flaming Crimes from Chrys Fey has everything needed for a heart stopping, pulse pounding roller coaster ride through disaster and danger.
I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of Flaming Crimes by Chrys Fey.
Flaming Crimes is the slightly more relaxed sequel to Tsunami Crimes. The genre is romantic suspense/crime and this series certainly lives up to those claims!! You will be on the edge of your seat the entire time. There were definitely times where I said “noo, not again!” aloud at all the unfortunate situations Beth and Donovan find themselves in, but the suspense level was down a notch, which I definitely appreciated! It was cool to read a book that takes place where I live (central Florida, east coast). I don’t think I ever have before! The writing style has just enough detail so that the reader knows what’s going on and what the settings look like, but isn’t overwhelmed. The pace of the story is perfect, not slow but the intense events also aren’t right atop one another. Once again a very satisfying ending that wraps up the book nicely. Looking forward to book 5, Frozen Crimes!!
First of, I have to point out that this is the 4th book in the series, and although the main story was kind of standalone, the background story was not. Beth and Donovan relationship for once, had built from the first book, progressing through the series. In this book, they’ve got married, had thriving career, and in the start of thinking having family aka baby. Of course, life was never simple for them both. This time, another mad man manipulating nature to get his revenge on our beloved couple.
I always love the books in Disaster Crimes series by Chrys Fey. Beth and Donovan were both strong characters, flawed yet perfect. As a reader from the first book, I so rooted for them both. They’re great, albeit a bit unconventional, couple. Their romance felt so sweet, so real. While the suspense ran high along the book.
I simply loved this book. You will too!
I was provided a complementary copy by the author / publisher, but this in no way influenced my thoughts or opinions.
Here we go again! Hurricane's, Earthquakes and Tsunami's can't stop them, but will raging fires see the end of Beth and Donavan? Or will it be the bad guys who are lurking in the smoke? "Flaming Crimes" is one of those books that will keep you on the edge of your seat. I could almost feel the heat from the fires in this one (as well as the heat between Beth and Donovan!)
I listened to this fourth book in the Disaster Series on Audible, and it was just as intriguing as the paper books. Loved it! Great characters! And it was really good to learn more about Thorn in this book.
Author Chrys Fey writes fast paced, action-packed, adventures and Flaming Crimes did not disappoint!
Great book, but I highly recommend you read the other books in this series before delving into this one. The background of how Beth and Donovan met and how Thorn came into the picture will help establish their connection.
I listened to this on audio. I love this series because they are always getting into so much trouble as bad luck seems to follow Beth and Donovan. Seriously I would stay away from being friends with these two because it’s dangerous for your health. I was not disappointed by this audio it’s exciting and as always the narration is great.
Beth and Donovan are on fire in more ways than one. This fourth in the disaster crime series by Chrys Fey, is exciting, well paced and hot. The wild fires burning in Florida are coming dangerously close to their neighborhood. But if the fire started by arson, Beth has a hunch who may be threatening everything and everyone dear to her.
One of the reasons I love Beth and Donovan and quite frankly, would love to hang out with them, is the fact that they eat blueberry chocolate chip pancakes, loaded hot dogs and jalapeno nachos. Of course, I wouldn't have to worry about my enemies if I had any, because having Beth and Donovan as friends is practically a guarantee of safety and loyalty. I also wouldn't mind dating detective Thorn, Donovan's best buddy. ;)
If you haven't read any of these I highly recommend starting with Hurricane Crimes which is the first novel. These are not super long novels and fairly quick and fun with lots of action. Incidentally, Fey has a real talent for writing erotic scenes hence, the heat isn't just coming from the wild fires.
*I received a complimentary copy of this novel for an honest review.
Four books into this series and there isn’t much to say. I either liked it or I didn’t; but of course, I liked it. I liked this installment a lot (4.5 stars a lot). I was filled with all the usual romance and suspense you’d expect from the series, along with what I hope will be a new direction for the series.
In this installment, Beth and Donovan are enjoying their happily ever after, but of course, it’s been no fairy tale. Donovan has had to be strong for his recovering wife and show a patience he didn’t know he had. Beth, on the other hand, has clung to her love of Donovan to help her bounce back, as much as possible, from the trauma of torture and a tsunami.
Donovan has built Beth a dream home on the plot of land she survived on and inherited from her parents, but something is still missing. Aside from all the action, suspense, and violence that rockets this story to thrill level, the adventure of Beth and Donovan trying to have a baby kept the story grounded. If you take a moment to consider the odds of one couple being so unlucky and then realize how happy these two characters are, all logic goes out the window.
Considering the how and why of their relationship, which the author brings to the forefront, all the tragedies Beth and Donovan face don’t seem so farfetched. If anything, their tragedies and their triumphs make them feel more real, more endearing, more relatable.
I appreciated the way we got to see Beth and Donovan live a normal life that didn’t involve high-speed chases and shoot-outs for a while. It was a nice reminder that they both have jobs, friends, and family that are separated from all the drama that seems to follow them. Even when fires were consuming part of the setting, the words and actions Beth and Donovan said and took showed just how normal they are. Their differing perceptions of how people react to seeing or watching a fire was a nice reality check.
Not wanting to ramble on any further and for fear of giving away spoilers, I’ll just say that I enjoyed this book. I was happy to see more of Thorn and hope, if the series continues, it will focus more on his story or perhaps he’ll get a spin-off.
Highly recommended to series fans and adult readers of crime thrillers and romantic suspense.
I was given a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review, which has in no way affected the rating and review I’ve applied.
Donovan “’We need a vacation.’ Beth laughed. ‘Our vacations tend to be deadly.’ … ‘One day we’ll have a normal vacation.’”
Truer words were never been written before, these two need to stay locked up in their house. Oh wait, that won’t even help them, the antagonist, both natural and human, come to their door step in this newest installment of Disaster Crimes. Disaster is the perfect word for these two, even so I can’t help but love them.
What I liked about this book is that the natural disaster isn’t the main antagonist like it was in Tsunami Crimes. I like the way that Ms. Fey changed that between the two books. It gave the book a different feel which gives the walking, married disaster duos’ situation different enough that the book wasn’t the same old same old. The reader also gets a more in-depth look into Donovan job, Monster Truck racing.
This book gives me hope for more in this series but with a different focus. Thorn perhaps? Lots of steam, lots of love and lots of surviving. 4.5 stars!
I think this may be my favorite book in the series... maybe. It's a tough call, but this one definitely contains enough story layers to keep things interesting, and the fire scenes are chillingly realistic. Poor Donovan and Beth are happily married now, but alas, danger and the bad guys aren't done messing with them yet.
Beth proves herself, once again, to be a real bad ass who's willing to put her life on the line for the people she loves, but her poignant desire to have a baby adds a vulnerable side to her personality, too. What can I say? The more we get to know the recurring characters in this series, the more likable they become. Since it's called a "Disaster Series," I don't think the author is gonna let them off the perilous merry-go-round any time soon... but one can hope. Poor things deserve a break...
A great fourth book, hopefully there is more to come. Beth and Donovan are now married and ready to have a child. Life is still not easy, someone is trying to sabotage their happiness. Had to keep reading to find out , impossible to wait.
This review is written after listening to the audio version of this book.
This is book four in a series where every story features a natural disaster, in previous books, we have had a hurricane, an earthquake, and a tsunami and now in this book, we have a wildfire. Although each story is standalone the two main characters remain the same - these two have had so many things to contend with I really feel for them.
Newly married, following their honeymoon in Hawaii our heroes Donavan and Beth have built their dream home and their lives appear to be returning to some sort of normal, they are even considering starting a family but fate hasn't finished with them yet and disaster strikes again, this time in the form of fire! Someone is out to hurt both Donavan and Beth.
The theme of natural disasters together with fighting crimes are woven intricately into all these books along with a blossoming, beautiful and passionate love between Beth and Donovan, they met during a hurricane and fell in love during an earthquake. Then during their honeymoon, there was a tsunami. Each of those events happened in different books now in this book, they must try to outsmart a psychopath out for revenge while at the same time fighting a wildfire.
This book though does concentrate more on Donovan and Beth's personal lives which make the characters feel more real and grounded. We get to see their love deepening as they try to start a family, while a drug dealer obsessed with vengeance plots to hurt them both. This book is another rollercoaster ride with the perfect blend of suspense, action, drama, romance, and love.
Bill Nevitt has given another amazing performance, he has narrated the previous two books in the series and I think that the continuity really helps the listener connect with the characters. Nevitt's delivery is incredibly smooth and flows well, and he brings just the right tone to all the characters.
I was given this audiobook as a gift and am voluntarily writing my review.
enjoyed this book once we got past all the sex scenes. I like the way the couple have to cope with a natural disaster while fighting for there lives against a more human kind, it makes the stories so unique and interesting. The book was a bit slow to start and does concentrate on the couple's love life more than the crime and disaster but once I started I found I couldn't stop listening. I think this is because the story is so different from the normal style of book and I have grown to like the characters and want to know what happens to them. Beth and Donovan have returned home from there honeymoon with new scares to show for it. As they settle down to married life and the prospect of starting a family, wild fires break out in the county endangering homes and lives. But the fires aren't the only things heating up, someone wants to get revenge on the couple and when Donovan is hurt in one of the attacks the couple once again fear for there lives and go into hiding. With the help of there policeman friend Thorn can they once again out smart the bad guys or this time will they get burnt? The first problem is working out who.has a grudge against them and with a whole list of bad guys behind bars because of them narrowing the list won't be easy. I like the fact that the author has stuck with the same narrator for three of books because Bill Nevitt is a good choice and having the same narrator all the way through makes it feel like one big adventure, instead of lots of books.
In Flaming Crimes by Chrys Fey, the devastation of a dry season and flash fires popping up everywhere leaves the residents of Florida, including Donovan and Beth, worried about the safety of their new home and all they hope to have as a couple.
Beth is on the road to recovery with the constant care of her loving husband but finally realizes she must gather her courage, shake off the past, and begin their future. But this is an action-adventure novel, so just when Donovan and Beth think the coast is clear and they can start their family, an unusually dry spring brings on dozens of flash fires and mysterious messages appear bringing devastation on a whole new level.
Is it the drug dealer that Beth helped put behind bars right before her wedding, an ex-boyfriend, or the assistant she fired for inappropriate behavior? As a self-defense instructor, Beth is skilled at finding ways to get the upper hand on her assailants, but the bad guy/s are angry and determined as always.
Want a fast ride, hot romance, and two likable characters, then Flaming Crimes is the book for you, but don’t settle for just one story about these two adventurous characters, there’s an entire disaster series to entertain you!
I wonder what’s next for this adventurous couple. Did someone say blizzard?
Our favorite couple, Beth and Donovan, have survived a lot over the past couple of years...hurricane, earthquake, tsunami...and are finally enjoying married life in Central FL. Beth has her self defense school and Donovan, his monster truck racing business...now they'd like to start a family, but that has been slow coming...doesn't help the pressure from Donovan's mom and grand mom! Unfortunately, Central FL is being plagued by drought and ensuing brush fires and soon it gets close to B & D's home! Then someone sabotages Donovan's truck during a race and the couple and friend, Detective Thorn, are baffled by who would do this, after all, the bad guys have all been locked up. When Beth is kidnapped, the identity of the would-be-killer is revealed...but the story doesn't end there...you just have to read/listen to find out what happens next! Another fast paced, action packed story in the lives of Beth and Donovan. I voluntarily accepted a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Flaming Crimes is another gripping book in Chrys Fey's Disaster Crimes series. Having listened to books 2 & 3, I was looking forward to finding out more about Donovan and Beth and what dangers they might find themselves in Flaming Crimes. They are back in their forever home in Florida, living a good life and once again ominous things begin to happen. Who is it now that wants them dead? Stong, riveting characters, (I enjoy the relationship of the Goldwyns with their detective friend Thorne--the back and forth teasing and the trust they share) edge-of-the-seat action and a tension-filled story that moves quickly, all come together to make this an enjoyable book. The author vividly paints the fiery scenes of Florida burning and the monster truck race, keeping interest high. I listened to a complimentary copy of the audiobook and the narrator, Bill Nevitt, does a great job telling the story, making for an enjoyable listening experience. I will put a caution here that this book is at least a PG-13 rating, due to language and intimacy details.
I submit this review after listening to the audiobook of this title. After listening to the other books in this series, this one deals with a lot of fears that people today must confront. The fear of muggings and rape, and how to face it. The fear of almost losing a loved one in an accident, the fear of fire and the devastating impact it has on a family and community. Then there is the fear of being targeted by a ruthless criminal, being kidnapped and facing a terrible death at his hands. However, for each fear, there was always the positive attitude, that anything could be overcome and the individual still had power, irrespective of the situation. It was a case of finding a way out! The narrator does a fantastic job, bringing the characters to life and creating further dimension through his vocalizations. I have really enjoyed this book, as well as the others in this series.
Beth and Donovan are happily married and are now starting to think of kids. But wildfires close to their home has them both on edge, so much so they don't notice some of the strange things that are happening to them for what they are, until it is almost to late. Now the fire is coming for their house and while Donovan is helping keep water on the house Beth is running things to there car and helping neighbors until she finds herself running for her life.
These books just keep getting better, more action and more suspense, I don't know how the author does it but I like it. Narrator Bill Nevitt gives it another awesome performance and I can not wait for the next book. Beth and Donovan have become family and I love hearing what they are up too and how they beat the bad guys.
Just when Beth and Donovan have settled into married life and are considering starting a family, all hell breaks loose again in the form of bush fires and psychopathic bad guys. Our dynamic duo face sabotage, fear, intrigue, kidnapping, uncertainty and fire as it all intertwines in their lives and puts both at risk. The mix of action, romance and drama in this story is great and the narration showcases it well. Bill Nevitt does a great job of bring the characters to life and letting the emotions show. This story can be listened to as a stand-alone but you will get more from the relationships in the story if you listen to the books in order.
Audio book review This is book four in the series. Every audio has a theme. There is always a natural disaster that the couple seems to get into . There is the hurricane, the tsunami. Right after their honeymoon in Hawaii where another disaster followed them . Hero is Donavan . Heroine is Beth . After their honeymoon, the couple has their dream home and their dream work . Right when they are thinking about starting a family disaster strikes Donavan and Beth . The disaster is a fire. Someone is set out to seriously get Donavan and Beth . The purpose for their stalking is to do serious damage
Bill Nevitt has nailed this series. He brings this series to life
Flaming Crimes by Chrys Fey is both a standalone listen and part of a series. Beth and Donovan are the featured couple in this book. In past stories, the couple has endured a hurricane, an earthquake, and a tsunami. Now they are dealing with wildfire. I love how the author meshes action, disaster, crime and romance into one. The storyline has some unpredictable twists. Bill Nevitt brings the characters to life with his performance. I enjoy how he has distinguishable voices for the characters. I requested this review copy audiobook and have voluntarily written this review. I will definitely listen to more books by this author and narrator.
Another good one. I really liked the mystery, how they didn't know who was after them (that's what happens when you piss-off a lot of people, kids :P ) and how, when they finally discover who is the culprit, it was someone that wasn't even in their list.
I liked their friendship with Thorn, and I liked that Beth is still trying to overcome the trauma from last book. What I didn't like was that she didn't get rid of Dave before he assaulted one of her clients. She's working with abused women, she should have know better.
And I loved Bill Nevitt narration, he really make the action's scenes exciting and terrifying.
I really enjoyed this book. Following a very eventful honeymoon Beth and Donavon are back home, settling into married life and try for a baby. Disaster interferes with their plans for a harmonious life, there is a spate of fires which seem to be random and could possibly be arson. When fire threatens their home the intrepid duo step up to the challenge ending with Beth facing an old adversary. A gripping story, the best in the series so far!
My fifth read from author Chrys Fey. The characters introduced in Hurricane Crimes (Disaster Crimes #1) are back in this story. Well-written romantic suspense, captivating & intriguing with well-developed characters. I’ll be reading more in this series and look forward to the fourth book. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018)
I really hadn't thought about firestorms in central Florida, but maybe that's what made it even more menacing. Psychopaths and pyromania are the criminal elements in this installment, but it's a very hard road to the happy ever after. Excellent read!
Bill Nevitt really succeeded in making the story greater and the danger scarier.
Each of Chrys Fey's books features a different type of disaster. I thought a tsunami was the worst until I read Flaming Crimes. Just the thought of being burned alive is terrifying. Ms. Fey keeps the reader on the edge of her seat as Beth and Donovan try to figure out who's after them now. Will this latest terror force them apart? Or will their love triumph? A great romantic suspense.
I’m loving listening to the exploits of Beth and Donovan (narrated excellently by Bill Nevitt). If like getting to know your characters give this a read/listen
