The Christmas Ball #1

The Christmas Ball

Rate this book
Alice doesn't want to go to this Christmas party. Pretending to be straight around all her family and the Fowler family for an entire month to prepare for a ball, for her to dance with the man they want her to marry is not in the top 100 ways to spend December. But since her family is paying her tuition, she can't risk saying no. Besides, it's only once every ten years. She just has to survive.

She thinks she can handle it, until she finds out her rehearsal partner she'll be spending the month with is the same one from ten years before--and the first girl Alice ever liked. And unfortunately for her, her feelings haven't changed.

The Christmas Ball is a 50k-word f/f romance with family drama, a secret romance, a childhood crush, plenty of mutual pining, and of course, they only have one bed.
Content warning for open-door sex scenes, queerphobia, and a really sleazy man.

A pompous family Christmas ball in this century? Really? I thought it was something of bygone days. Well, if you can cope with this type of family reunion in this place and time, the story had its moments. And of course the Christmas ball scene at the end of the book was absolutely glorious.

This is one of my favourite f/f adult romance novels I've read so far, I liked the romance a lot. I liked the writing style, and felt like everything progressed naturally.

There was a good amount of fluff, but this does come with a trigger warning for pretty intense (religious) homophobia, so please be mindful of that.

DO NOT READ THIS BOOK UNLESS YOU REALISE THERE IS A BOOK 2. Consider me genuinely angry - at the end of this sweet, lovely book there is a description of book 2 which, in effect, disses all this reader's emotional buy-in to book 1.

Sweet story...coming out

It is funny how we get scared to come out to people we love. Family, siblings, cousins....it definitively can be unpredictable. But both girls got lucky, and what they cared abiut was acceptance. Funny how many people have your back. This is funny at times and extremely cute book. Very easy read.

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this, and I'm so grateful! This is such a feel-good book! Both of the main characters, Alice and Lisette, felt very real, and I connected with both. I'd love to have them as friends haha. This story contains it all— reconnecting with a childhood crush, roommates, and a little bit of mutual pining is thrown in there as well. The antagonist is also well done, I wanted to punch him whenever he appeared on the page! I definitely recommend this wonderful little wlw book :)

This was pretty cute. I personally have to kind of check my brain at the door for most Christmas romances, bc the time span just tend to kind of have to be instalove by nature unless the story is spanning years, and I’m not really an instalove kind of girl. Overall though, I liked both MCs, the kiddos were adorable and I had a good time.

Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I settled down with a hot cup of spiced Chai tea and my advanced copy of The Christmas Ball, ready to indulge in the warm, romantic story it promised to tell.

From the beginning, I was immediately taken by both Alice and Lisette, though I have to admit that I identify much more with the emotional woes that Lisette wrestled with. A young woman used to putting up walls around her soft, vulnerable points, Lisette immediately won my heart as she struggled with the strength of what she truly felt. Alice was an endearing character as well; her open honesty and sometimes frank emotional power, were both to be admired and feared.

They weren't the only characters worthy of admiration, it has to be said. From Rose and Rhys, both too adorable for words in their own unique way, to the upstanding Henry, who hid so much more depth than originally given credit for, this story treats the reader to a cast of characters that come together to form an environment both supportive and antagonistic, just one more hurdle to be overcome by the MCs. It adds to the myriad of influences and challenges that Lisette and Alice both face, and while not insurmountable, they certainly aren't easy to laugh off.

Overall, this was an absolutely delightful, slo-ish burn f/f holiday romance about how people interact, how they think others do, and how there's always room for loving surprises in life. I would highly recommend it for anyone looking for a cozy novel to ring in their season’s reading. So deck your halls, share your holiday cheer, but make space in your celebrations for some romance from Lily Seabrooke. I promise, you will love it!

CW: Homophobia
This book is full of Christmas imagery, so I find it perfect for that Holiday season. I liked the Christmas shopping, the Christmas dancing, the Christmas singing, the hot chocolate, the presents and all the family feeling (at least with the kids).

The two protagonists were cute. I liked Lissette better because I could relate to her “explosive” temperament. I think that it was well portrayed. Sometimes, because we “explosive” people try to control ourselves too much for fear or hurting others, people are unable to understand when we explain that we have a problem with that explosive expression of our emotions. And Alice, I really don’t know how she was like.

I had the feeling that the author was not really sure about who was who because sometimes their “faults” and their virtues were passed from one to the other. I think that the author was not sure about the two characters and it showed.

I’m not a fan of instalove, but I already supposed that it would be the case because the book is not that long. So I won’t complain too much about it. They were cute with each other and I think that the love was well expressed. Even though they had just met each other, I never doubted that they were in love.

I wasn’t a fan also of the homophobia of a lot of the members of the family. I prefer my Christmas readings to be happy and the homophobia takes a good portion of the book, so don’t read it if you are not feeling in the right mood to stand those behaviours.

Well, even with its flaws, I think that it’s a good book for Christmas time and to get in the mood to do Christmas things.

It was a sweet story full of Christmas atmosphere. I didn't really connect with the characters, even though they were really nice and sweet. Maybe it was because sometimes I had a hard time telling Lissette and Alice apart. I got confused in some parts.
If you want to read a very sweet story with a bit of drama (cw homophobia), and lots of hot chocolate and Christmas stuff, this is your book.

There’s a lot to love about this book!! It is a sweet Christmas romance between two women who fell for each other as kids and then hadn’t seen each other for a number of years. There’s ice skating, present picking, and SO MUCH DANCING. In other words, there’s enough fluffy romantic tropes to warm even the coldest of hearts.

One thing that kept this from being a five-star read for me were the character voices. The narration alternates between Alice and Lisette, but a lot of the time I found myself forgetting who was narrating any given scene because their voices were pretty much the same.

Overall, though, this was a really strong debut, and I’ll definitely be picking up Seabrooke’s next work!

As a note, if you’re going to read this, tw for religious-based homophobia.

I got an ARC of this book in return for an honest review.

This was a beautiful story with interesting characters and the sweetest romance. It had a lot of different factors throughout the story which drew you in and kept attention and some wonderful side characters. The HEA is the absolute best and I adored it. If you want a big dose of happiness this book is for you!

REP: lesbian main characters

TWs: homophobia

-----------

I unfortunately really wasn't feeling this book at all. I felt like the storyline was pretty rushed - they went from meeting for the first time in ten years, to hooking up and confessing how in love they were in the span of, like, two weeks? Like it was cute in the beginning but unfortunately I started losing interest when I realized how hurried I felt this story was. The premise of this book seemed, and is, amazing, I just wished the story was more fleshed out and isn't as rushed. I know it's romance, and a lot of romance is this way, so unfortunately I think this is a case of me not being able to turn my brain's critical thinking off and go with the flow.

The only thing that really made me roll my eyes was the way it used homophobia as a plot tool - I feel like there are other ways it could have been done.

Judging by the majority of the reviews here, I definitely seem to be in the minority so maybe don't listen too closely to this review.

This book was phenomenal! I loved it a lot. It took some getting into, but the second you hit a certain part it’s like watching dominos fall into place. The sapphic content in this story alone makes my heart so warm. I highly recommend this story! You don’t even need to read it around Christmas time! Christmas is a minor aspect in the story.

I was both delighted and grateful to receive an ARC of this book.

My life has been seriously lacking in queer Christmas fluff and ‘The Christmas Ball’ ticked every single box, to the point where I’ve already read it three times this month. This book has it all - childhood crushes which develop into a full-blown secret romance and wonderful, well-crafted characters. Alice and Lisette are both relatable, likable and the romance between them is believable. Seth, the book’s antagonist, really is the guy everyone loves to hate and I can’t remember the last time a character made me so angry.

Lily’s writing is truly a gift and she effortlessly combines the joy of a new romance with the spirit of the Christmas season. This is juxtaposed with the obvious difficulty in overcoming their families’ prejudices and I found my heart either full or aching for the majority of the book. There is no in-between - this is a story that will really make you feel.

I honestly can’t say enough good things about this book, and my only criticism of it is that I ran out of pages. Hoping to read more of Lisette and Alice’s story in the not too distant future.

"The Christmas Ball" by Lily Seabrooke is a festive, fast-paced, holiday romance. It was enchanting in its storyline, characters, and setting.

Alice is an undergrad loving life but loathing the holidays. This year brings the extravagant ball which her family insists she attends, even though it seems old fashioned. In their overly religious viewpoint, this ball is the perfect opportunity for young men and women to pair up for marriage. Besides the fact that Alice finds that to be archaic, it is definitely not for her. She is a lesbian, out to everyone except for her family.

Lisette was her roommate at the prior ball, and was the first girl Alice ever felt real attraction to. Now they are reunited, and Alice's feelings for the bright and beautiful woman have not changed. She can't bear to share a bed with her, so they take turns sleeping on the floor.

The days to the ball lead up to a climax of outrage. Romance flourishes despite prejudice.

This was a fun and fast paced lesbian romance. Being set in the modern times with an old fashioned ball was a fantastical twist of settings. Fans of Netflix's "Bridgerton" will be enthralled with the drama and delight in the fashion. I was cheering by the end!

Not what I was expecting! From the cover I was expecting a historical f/f. (I tend to read the synopsis briefly, put the book on my TBR, then forget the synopsis before reading. Makes for some nice surprises!)
.
But anyway, yes, this is modern day f/f and the ball is at the end of a fancy weeks-long party thrown by some rich families in Michigan every 10 years.
.
Alice and Lisette there last time, at age 12 or so, and now at 22 they are thrown back together. The families are conservative, Christian, and homophobic, so while both are crushing on the other, they are both too nervous to say anything.
.
I liked how it portrayed just how hard it can be to come out to certain people, even if you suspect they wouldn’t be bothered by it.
.
Once the secret comes out, there’s plenty of time spent together, secret hand-holding under blankets, etc., which makes reading fun. Oh right, and hot sex.
.
There is a For-Your-Own-Good-Breakup (“I’ll hurt you too much in the future so I’ll break up with you now instead”) which I hate, but at least it’s not the gaslighting kind, and it’s called out on-page as stupid.
.
This was a nice addition to all the m/f and m/m holiday romances out there. .

I’ve simply stalled out on this one. This is New Adult but it feels very young to me (completely my issue) and that’s made it hard to get into the story, despite the Normal Friend Stuff trope, which is typically my catnip. I put it aside for a week and just tried again and it’s still not grabbing me. I’m not sure why these rich families have an annual Christmas ball or even how many families participate or why they’re trying to marry off their children to one another or how long this tradition has been happening. I’m glad Alice and Lisette found each other but I don’t really want to hang in there to see if they choose each other for the last dance and come out to their families.

Character notes: Alice is a 22 year old white lesbian computer science major. Lisette is a white lesbian violinist and music production major. This is set in rural Michigan.

Content notes: closeted MCs, toxic parents, homophobia, sexism, ableist language, gendered insults

This book fluttered across my Twitter on its release day and since I was in a holiday fluff sort of mood I checked it out right away. It was a really fun read, quick and sweet, with a lot of well-executed Christmas tropes. It has this really lovely emotional balance where the sadness, doubts and anxiety of the feelings feel real and poignant but still didn't tip the overall feeling off the story away from being fluffy (to me, anyway). A strong four!

I did find the premise a bit confusing though - if these two rich families have been holding family meetings (admittedly only once per decade) with the expectation of cross-marriage, for a hundred years, then I feel like they should sort of be one family by now...Or at least less distinct?

*I received an ARC of this book*

I loved every minute of this story. Lily’s witty humor spills over every page. The characters are complicated and real, and I immediately connected so well with them both. I spent most of the book thinking, if my family were rich, this is exactly what they would be like.

It’s such a soft, sweet story about love, and I’m not usually a fan of Christmas anything. So, if I loved it, I’m sure Christmas story lovers will love it.

I’m so grateful I had the opportunity to read this story, and I think anyone who has been needing one of these queer f/f Christmas romances like I have, should definitely pre-order The Christmas Ball before December 10th!

Lovely Christmas read

Even though the women in this story are fairly young, not teenagers, it is a great read. I was able to connect with them and recognize the insecurities of attraction, fear of voicing that attraction (rejection & ridicule), and lastly being unable to decide if it's love. The background in the story raises the story to another level. There is of course an overly religious aunt who seems to think she speaks for God, a gross young man who thinks he's God's gift, and kids who I hope are our future. Coming from a religious mother who was very much like this aunt I could understand the fear.

This was a truly delightful wlw romance. Alice and Lisette were paired up as practice partners for a Christmas Ball when they were 12. Alice has loved Lisette ever since. Ten years later, the Christmas Ball is happening again, Alice & Lisette are all grown up, and are again paired up practice partners. So many people are gathered for this event that they even need to share a room which adds some very pleasant tension. This story gives you all the feels while you watch how Alice & Lisette navigate their attraction to each other while preparing for the Christmas Ball. Side note: The kids in this story make very surprising awesome supporting characters. They were just the cutest.

I loved the premise. I got my eyes on this book around Christmas and it was everything I wanted, as I was actively searching for lesbian romance novels featuring happy and healthy relationships with little to no tragedy attached.

Unfortunately it just didn't deliver. It felt poorly written, I found both characters flat and almost indistinguishable from each other, and all the plot points felt forced. I was so excited for it, so in love with the premice that I pushed myself onward, force-feeding myself with it page by page hoping it will get better.
It never got better. I had to abandon it a few chapters before the ending, didn't care to finish.

This book is everything I never knew I wanted. Two girls in pretty dresses kissing each other and being adorable all over the place? Ice skating and hot chocolate and only one bed? I am spoiled and I am *swooning.* I had to put the book down every few pages because I was utterly swamped with feels. Alice and Lisette are adorable (although don't let the softness fool you, there are some very steamy scenes in this book), there are some cute kids, and a few good allies. What more could you ask for from a book?

The main characters in this holiday romance make a cute couple. The setting of a once-per-decade Christmas ball is unusual, though it does provide an opportunity for the story to unfold in a compressed time frame. There is also a decent supporting cast. Unfortunately the character of the screeching, homophobic aunt seems too melodramatic for the rest of the story line. Consequently the HEA is a little flat and not entirely satisfying. The feeling of letdown is amplified by the brief preview provided for the sequel.

Loved It!

I read this when it first came out and loved it but must never have put in a review. Since their is a next book, I decided to reread it. This is a book that will stand time. It is a true coming out story with an exceptional ending. Alice and Lisette will be the role model young girls (or boys) need. The writing was clear on where this story needed to go and it did. A must read.....

Absolutely Beautiful

I wish I could say I read this in one sitting but it took me two (sleep was needed).

A beautiful book with great, flawed, real characters set in a situation that I feel could be all too real in this day and age. Lisette and Alice are wonderful disasters in their own ways and learn the hard way what it means to truly love someone.

Another one of Lily's books that is absolutely wonderful.

Two heads are better when they are together!

Ten years seems like a long or short time when you anticipate seeing your first love again. Does not help to have a aunt get on her high horse and quote scripture and a sleazy ball of disappointed suitor who sets out to destroy two families. Thankfully the author has created some wonderful lines to create an HEA. Enjoy!
