A man might homestead, but it takes a woman to turn that place into a home! This matchmaker will settle the West one couple at a time.
Under suspicion after his wife’s murder, Elias Kline knows he has to leave Mills Bluff. Learning a lynch mob is planning to kill him, he slips away from town. Taking only his smithy tools and his young son, he chooses a new name—Ezra King. Heading west seems a fine way to start over, but he’ll need a wife to raise his son and cook his meals. One sent by an agency shouldn’t expect love, he decides.
A matchmaker convinces lonely Ruby Hastings to take a risk on Ezra King. After all, the man is helping fulfill the nation's destiny of settling the west. Reading the man’s letter, Ruby aches for the widower's little boy and seizes on this chance to be a mama to him. After all, with a brother on the run from the law and a newly married sister, her siblings no longer need Ruby and this motherless boy does.
It should be a convenient arrangement. What happens when the mail-order wife begins to push past the walls guarding Elias’ heart, challenging him spiritually and emotionally? When danger follows him from Mills Bluff, will Elias be able to keep his family together?

A quick read about Elias Kline who was accused by the townsfolk of drowning his wife and killing the man with whom she had a prior relationship. Now, to keep his son and possibly save his own life he needed to leave town.

Ruby Hastings was a 32 year old spinster who had raised her siblings until the last one got married. Now, on her own with no one to care for, she's convinced by a woman she just met to answer a letter sent to a matrimonial agency from a man who needed a mother for his son, and a wife to be his companion and helper.

So, taking a train from Boston to Indiana, Ruby meets Elias, now called Ezra King, they would journey to Missouri to start a new life.

I was so absorbed in the story, noting how clean and faith oriented it was that I didn’t even realize it was a novella. Generally I’m not a novella fan, but this one really worked for me. Loved the three main characters. Elias was such a kind man, and for that matter Ruby was a gentle, loving soul. Frank, aka Buddy, was the sweetest little five year old you could possibly imagine.

Glad I picked up this Kindle version and I think I’ll keep my eye on this new-to-me author, Marisa Masterson.

Touching historical romance

This is a touching story of love and family that comes, even when someone thinks it's too risky to love. A delight to read.

A story of loss and love found with a little mystery along the way. I love stories on settling in the west and mail order brides so this was perfect! Being accused of murdering his wife, Elias takes off with his young son to find a new place to settle far from his accusers. But he knows he needs a wife to take care of his son and hone and sends off a mail order bride. Plus she would not expect love which he knew after his first wife, he might never feel again. Ruby is lonely. Her sister is married and her brother is on the run. She hopes by answering the ad she can be a mother to Ezra’s son. Right before she begins her trip to marry, she is left with a surprise. . A journey of unexpected trials and joy that warms the heart. The narrator Caroline Cole did a wonderful job and I did not want it to end!

So different than any mail order bride story I've read! A widower flees with his son and marries a spinster with a secret of her own! I loved the instant connection with the couple and the children!
The narration was perfect!

THAT’S THE END OF HOME AND FAMILY

The Westward Home and Heart Mail-Order Bridge series will be individual stories, that each read well as stand-alone by various authors. The stories are clean, mail-order bride stories. They revolve around Mrs. Mildred ‘Milly’ Crenshaw of Boston, Massachusetts, and her business, Westward Home and Hearts Matrimonial Agency.

The story will be about Ruby Hastings, a woman of thirty-two who became the woman of the house after her mother died during childbirth with her youngest sister, Emerald aka Emmie. Now, Emmie has married Thomas and will be moving away, leaving Ruby alone. Between the wedding and luncheon, she will meet Mrs. Crenshaw, while she has stopped at the church cemetery to place flowers on her parent's graves. From the church to the luncheon, they chat.

Ruby: Thank you for listening. I feel much better. Ready now, in fact, to meet the others again and I appreciate you letting me ramble.
Millie: It was not rambling. You need a solution for your sense of being useless and adrift. It so happens that I have one. You, Miss Hastings, need to get married.
Ruby: Mrs. Crenshaw, you make it sound so easy. I’m a thirty-two-year-old spinster.

“Does any wife truly know her husband before they live together?”

Elias Kline lives in Mill Bluff and is a blacksmith. He came to the town after the war and was befriended by the Schmidt family, especially their daughter, Mary. The family pushes for a quick marriage and seven months later, Mary gives birth to a little boy she insists upon naming Franz. The Sauers, Franz, and his wife move back to Mills Bluff. Now, Mary Kline is dead by drowning and Franz Sauer was shot in the back.

“The entire population of Mills Bluff believed he’d killed his wife. Elias Kline decided in that moment to move away.”

The story is mystery, suspense, and life and death danger, and has the good, the bad, and the evil of people. Elias wants to move westward until he can find a town needing a blacksmith. He has the support of his in-laws, who go as far as to help him leave town when rumors are floating around. He will write to the Westward Home and Hearts Matrimonial Agency and ask if a wife, one who has never married, would meet him in St. Joseph, Missouri. From there, Mrs. Crenshaw will make arrangements with Ruby Hastings to travel and meet her future husband.

The story will have a great cast of characters and includes Elias and Frank, as he prefers to call his son, traveling under the assumed names of Ezra and Buddy King. I like that he does his best to keep people who matter informed of what they are facing, and the truth of the situation. He will include those who help him along the journey, including lawmen. It seems that there is a bounty out on him—and soon he will learn there is also one on his new brother-in-law. Becoming a mail-ordered bride was never something that Ruby expected to happen, but she is excited to embrace this new lot in her life—marrying a complete stranger. The journey of Elias and Ruby, along with Frank and Letty, and don’t forget Onie, was an adventure worth reading.

A Quest For a Family

Ruby wanted a family. She was young spinster and had no suitor. Elias Kline was a young widower with a young son. The maternal grandparents of the young son felt that their grandson needed a family to raise him, not just a father, and they were the family to raise him. They were willing to do whatever it took to raise their grandson.

Both Ruby and Elias contacted a matchmaker agency. Elias decides to change his name to Ezra King because his deceased wife's family insist on taking the boy instead of letting the father raise him. This begins a cross country race to establish a home for the boy. The agency pairs Ruby and Elias. Ruby, after all, desires a family.

Before Elias (Ezra) can pack up and head west, his in-laws attempt to have their grandson kidnapped and delivered to them. Elias is barely able to thwart the kidnap attempt, and heads west with Ruby and his son. There is a lot of action on the trip west and the grandparents do not give up in their attempts to get their grandson.

Read this. There is lots of action. It keeps you guessing.I'm

Good Wins Over Bad!
Two strangers on the run, each of them with a young child and trying to keep them safe. This is what Ruby and Elias find themselves committed to as they meet and slowly fall in love after being brought together by a Matchmaker.
This is a tender love story written with warmth and caring about some very special characters. There is a good level of excitement and adventure with evil doers written in as well but good wins over bad so there is a very welcome happy ever after in the end.
I am happy to say that I have found another author whose writings I admire and would be happy to read or listen to more of her books.
I enjoyed the narration by Caroline Turner Cole, also a new artiste to me and also someone I would happily listen to again.
I listened to the audiobook version of this story and my voluntary and unbiased review of it is recorded above.

I enjoyed reading a mail-order bride book where there wasn't a struggle to fall in love, even though Elias took some time to admit it out loud, his feelings for Ruby were clear from the beginning. There was murder, suspense, adventure, and romance. All making this a real hard-to-set-aside audio book. My Monday chores took a hit! :) I'm just recently reading books my Ms. Masterson and am so glad I discovered her work. Pleasantly clean both in language and content. I will be recommending her books for sure.

Ms. Cole did a wonder job of narrating this book. That made the book even more enjoyable. The sound on Chapter Nine had some sound issues and needs some work. This were strictly technical problems and had nothing to do with the narration.

Thanks to the author for providing me with this audio book review copy. I am voluntarily leaving this review.

Sweet story and easy to read

I was looking for sweet and warm story to read, and I found what I was looking for.
The things I loved the most were the charactres faith or maybe leap of faith to marry a complete stranger. I enjoyed how the author describes both ML and FL at the beginning of the book the character very very well discribed, but I missed more scenes between the two of them. I guess I was hoping for more romance to see more how they relationship developed. I wished she said I love you back to him.
Other than that I enjoyed the book, I finished it in a couple of hours. I think that if you enjoy consevative stories, and even if you aren't a Christian, you can read if with no problems. There are some mention of verses from the Bible, and the book is set in the old days when things were done in a Christian way, but is not overly focused on faith.

A lot happening in this story and it's all good. Elias gathers his son and goes on the run as he is being falsely accused of murdering his wife. Ruby who has raised her siblings, is now considered to be a spinster. She allows herself to be talked into answering the letter for mail order bride. From here the story is action-packed and keeps you turning the pages. I love stories with children in them, how trusting they can be and how they just want to be loved... Ruby slips right in and loves Elias' son as if he were her own and it is this love that compels her to action toward the end of the story.

The narrative was done very well.

I received a free audiobook from the author and I voluntarily leaving this review.

A Bit of aTwist

I’ve read MANY mail order bride books. It seems to be an extremely popular topic. Many of these books follow basic wagon train moving west, difficulties bride and groom face accepting/ developing a relationship, etc.
This book had a variety of hurdles to overcome, murders to solve, kidnappers to fight off, but the couple bonded quickly and got along fine, even the children rather smoothly adapted to the new family. The struggles this couple faced happened before the book started.
There were misunderstandings and false accusations. Dealing with safety of the children and keeping the men from legal troubles provided the angst of the story.

Great characters that make this story so appealing. Ruby, Elias and evening Obie all have a story. This story has such a wonderful plot that keeps the reader fully engaged. There is romance, but the best part is how the author shows that God has a plan for our lives. God has every detail in his hands, this was shown throughout this wonderful story. Lots of action with the bad guys and help from from friends made along the way. Great story, would love a second one with Onie!
Was given a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.

I loved this story.

Another good story by this author with lots of action and false accusations. A new name, new wife, and a new baby make the trip West so much better. Too many miss understandings with both her brother and new husband, and crazy and menacing men following them to a new town. All's good and well, now for this growing family. Highly recommended story for sure. So far this series is really good. But you must read for the entire story and why they were chased after.

Almost a 5 star book

I liked the second in this series much better than the first one. The author managed to present the two lead characters a bit differently than the usual. And I truly liked Elias and Ruby. You'll enjoy this book. It missed the fifth star due to a rushed ending. Well, it felt rushed like I had skipped a chapter. Also the word "bible" is always capitalized when it references God's word. There are three uses of the word incorrectly then near the end the word appears as Bible. Admittedly, this is a pet peeve of mine.

What a wonderful book. I listened to the audiobook of this story. Great narration and refreshing. Elias Kline must leave town with his son. His wife has been murdered and he is being blamed. He steals away in the night and changes his name to Ezra King. He is going to need a wife to take care of him and his boy. He sends a letter to the Matchmaker. Ruby is not needed at her home anymore and decides to take a chance on Ezra. His son certainly needs a mother. Will their arrangement turn to something else.

I listened to the audiobook and enjoyed the narrator and the story. I could just picture the bride and groom meeting and the trip west. Rest assured there is going to be trouble when someone wants the son of Elias (Ezra). I loved Ruby and her characterization. She was kind and took care of her siblings taking no thought of herself until she raised all of them.
Romance, action and great characters, that’s what makes a great book!
I received a free audiobook but was not required to write a positive review. All opinions are my own.

Ruby and Elias 💞

Riveting, exciting story! Ruby thought she would be a spinster the rest of her days. She never thought she’d meet a lady named Mrs Crenshaw and that her life would change so dramatically. Not only did she marry, but became an instant mother to two children.

The only thing missing from this story was Elias and Ruby professing their love at the end. Nice extended epilogue, but the romantic in me wishes there would have been that declaration of love between them ❤️

Good but too much

This wasn’t a bad book at all, but it was one that had too much going on and left me confused with the dual storylines. It was hard to keep the people straight (with the exception of the main three adults and the two children). I think eliminating one of the stories or at least making it easier to define would have benefitted this book greatly. Honestly the Elias storyline was enough to sustain the book and for that reason the Onyx story felt shoehorned in. All and all it was a good boy but not my favorite.

lots of action

I really liked the story of Ruby and family. It was an easy, quick read with lots of action and tension, but a sweet story with lots of love.
I lowered the rating because there were some grammatical errors. Also Near the end, Buddy called Ruby “Mama,”. Ruby was so moved and said it was the first time Buddy had called her mama. The author must have had a memory lapse, as Buddy had called her mama in the previous chapter.
I rate Ruby’s Risk 3.5 stars.

This was a great adventure. Ruby helped her siblings grow to adults then she finally gets her own family. Elias and Frank are what she gets. A loving husband and a cheerful boy. Plus a bonus little Letty too. They are tracked by evil ppl and have to stick together and trust just the right ppl to help them. Their forever home is a great little town.

Nice read

Ruby and Elias are the hero’s in this read. Both with a very big heart. First Ruby raising her siblings from baby’s to adulthood, and Elias being accused of murder in which he did not do. Then taken on a new wife, Ruby, Ruby’s Niece, and then Ruby’s brother. They travel across the country to find a place of their own.

This is a marriage of convenience / mail order bride book. Their isn’t a lot of build up in the relationship but it is a sweet arrangement and all involved are happy. It has a bit of an adventure with the man having to change his name and move to protect himself and his son from the person who murdered his wife. Another child is also involved when he marries his new wife.

Very Good Book!

This is a wonderfully sweet story! Ruby a spinster has nothing to look forward to but a life of emptiness after her younger sister marries. However, a matchmaker introduces herself after the wedding and encourages Ruby to become a mail order bride. What life holds for her once she meets Elias and his son! Sweet story!

Lots of subplots

How fun! unjustly accused of murder, a man has to leave under cover of darkness with his child. In desperate need of a wife, he finds a spinster who is lonely and looking for adventure. Boy howdy does Ruby find adventure and love and so much more than she ever hoped for. I enjoyed this book. Lots of fun subplots definitely kept this interesting

An unwanted bride and an unwanted groom…..

plus a little girl and a newborn baby! The groom is on the run from the law even though he claims his innocence. Just that sets up the premise for good story. This book was clean and well written. The characters faith in God brought them the peace they needed to get through each new situation.

A adventure full of mystery

I enjoyed reading this book. The story flowed nicely. One of the things I liked was that it was NOT full of repetition. The adventure, faith in the Good Lord's plan was beautiful.
