Spoiler alert: I wrote this novel. Sorry to betray such a secretive element upfront like this, but it had to be done.
GRINDFOREST! started as a joke. Between 2008-2016, I’d written a handful of well-received speculative scripts, including two parodies titled Hacked Off! and GRIZZLED! At one point, it looked like I might get the chance to shoot both of those scripts back to back, and I joked about slapping them together and spoofing the Tarantino/Rodrigues film, Grindhouse. But the movie biz is a fickle industry, and the deal never happened. In time, I pulled back somewhat from that life, tired of the ups and downs and shady producers and aggressive agents and all the other BS that comes with it.
The idea for GRINDFOREST! stuck with me, however, and a few years later I decided to write it as a novel, ultimately setting both stories in the same forest on the same day.
In the heat of day...
GRIZZLED! finds two forest rangers and a redneck hunter searching for The President’s lost daughter and battling a giant mutant penguin that has settled into their neck of the woods. In your face and unapologetic, GRIZZLED! lampoons the nature-run-amok books and films of the 1970s.
In the dead of night...
Hacked Off! is a mild parody of 80s slasher flicks, poking subtle fun at some of the wonky film mechanics found in the slice ‘n dice genre. In Hacked Off!, Junior Hodder decides to stand up to his family, a small clan of psychotic, supernatural hillbillies, after the right girl comes along and captures his heart.
Both versions are available as individual novels, as well. (These books are slightly altered from the versions contained in GRINDFOREST! I probably had to rewrite or cut 300-500 words between the two stories for them to stand-alone.)
Well, all that’s left to say is, in my professional opinion, I feel very strongly that you should spend your hard earned money on this book.
