Stretched the story into one too many books. I am not sorry I read another post apocalyptic series, but nothing stood out from the others.

Stone does a good job with the story line. Definitely a page turner. Strong female lead character. The setting is very well done.
Overall I enjoyed.

A bit too heavy-handed with the religion ans coincidences, but a solid read.

While the main protagonist was basically held captive by a cult, there was another character that was religious in a positive way, but it was soooo heavy-handed and he was two-dimensional. Perhaps one. Lots of ridiculous coincidences, but only one made me roll my eyes. I'm picky as hell but I recommend this if you like apocalyptic fiction. Oh, also, that stupid "we're adults and are in love, but we don't have sex" thing. You don't need to write a graphic scene. It makes zero sense that all these couples would be so chaste at THE END OF THE WORLD. OK, yes, I really am recommending this but just warning you of the relatively-minor annoyances.

I'm clearly in the minority here, but I got halfway through before giving up on this one, I think that's far enough along in the story to give it a rating. I feel it isn't a patch on her other series, Edge Of Collapse, which I thought was great. I'd still agree that Kyla Stone is a good writer. Her books generally flow nicely and keep up the suspense, but this was all action and not nearly enough character building. I couldn't face yet another gun battle, another eye rolling moment. And when you start skipping over paragraphs, you know it's time to move on.

Book #1 Point of Impact
I truly enjoyed my journey with Dakota and Logan, et al...

Dakota is tough young woman with a heart of gold, under her gruff exterior. She's practical, pragmatic, and fierce in her devotion to her sister, Eden, who was separated from Dakota in foster care. When the crap hits the fan she's more ready than most could be. She's going to do whatever she needs to get to Eden's side.

Logan, talk about a perfectly imperfect guy. He's got a rocky past to overcome to become the man he needs, and deep down wants, to be. IF he can pull his head out of his... bottle.

Either Dakota and Logan will come together to save the day, OR they'll kill each other getting there.

They're both harboring some deadly secrets that just might come back to bite them in the butt.

The story, literally, begins with a bang, and they're off... the author drew me in right away, and the action is pretty much non-stop. All the characters, including the secondary ones, pull on your heartstrings. A mark of a gifted writer is when they can make you care about everyone.

I read the 1st 3 books in a day. They are short, but the author manages to pack a lot into them. I can't wait for the 4th to come out! And, a warning, each ends on a cliffhanger!

Book #2 Fear the Fallout
And they keep getting better! Another non-stop action story.

The pressure is on! The radiation is still at dangerous levels but Dakota can't wait any longer to get to her sister, Eden. Someone from their past is looking for them and Dakota has to get to Eden before Maddox does.

We get more of Dakota and Eden's backstory as the author fills us in on why they're in hiding.
We also get more information regarding Logan's past as well, and it's NOT what Dakota thinks!

Maddox begins to get his story told and fills in some of the knowledge gaps as well.

The world building is very well done and highlights just how UNprepared we all are should the unthinkable happen.

Book #3 From the Ashes
Dakota, Logan, Eden, Julio, and Shay just cannot catch a break! While this 3rd installment still has a lot of action, it does slow down a bit, which was actually needed. Everyone is ill from radiation poisoning, and/or injured from various fires, gang run-ins, hostage taking, etc...

So, after a while, they all FINALLY get some much needed medical care, much needed government information, and can begin to plan their trek into the Everglades.

I actually appreciated the, short breather the author gave the characters. No one can be on point constantly without some down time and these characters sorely needed the brief respite they got - that respite almost causes MORE problems for them, in the long run. NEVER trust a government run facilty to do it's best for the civilians, they simply won't. They'll do what's most convenient for the government.

In any case, the race is STILL on. Dakota may have rescued Eden, but now it's a race to their safe house in the Everglades! Will they make it there before their pasts come back to haunt them?

Book #4 Into the Fire
Dakota, Logan, Eden, and Julio, are headed into the Everglades. Knowing Maddox, and other members from the Shepherd's of Mercy, will most likely be holding Ezra hostage. Will they make it in time, or will will Dakota lose the man she considers family? If he is alive, will Ezra welcome her and Eden back, or tell them to hit the road?

This 4th book in the series is, pretty much, non-stop action. How can Dakota keep Eden, and herself safe? CAN she keep them safe? What about Logan and Julio? The Everglades may have been a safe zone from the fallout, but it's nowhere NEAR safe, as it's closer to the Shepherd's compound. With the fire power and trained militia from the compound, will Dakota be able to bring the others in the area to the table for safety's sake?

The author tugs on your heartstrings in this one. Hard decisions have to be made, and Dakota isn't the only one who has to make them. This book will fire you up and make you want to kill some characters. It will make you cry and agonize over others, and be surprisingly proud of some you previously wondered about.

Book#5 Darkest Night
Kyla Stone has done it, again! Don't miss this awesome wrap up to the Nuclear Dawn series! This is book 5, and the final installment, unfortunately. I've fallen in love with these wonderfully fleshed out characters and am sad to see their stories end.

Find out what happens when Dakota, Logan, and company, try to rescue their own, with some aid from Hawthorne and his team. Will they be able to bring down the Prophet once and for all? Will Eden ever be secure enough in herself to go against her brother Maddox, and the Prophet? And can Dakota and Logan prevent the Prophet from further destruction, without being destroyed themselves?

This story is action packed and told in multiple POV from Dakota, Logan, Eden, Maddox, and Shay's perspectives. Kyla Stone does an excellent job and is very concise in this, where other authors may muddy the telling, she keeps each perspective clearly defined.

This author really knows how to run a reader through a gamut of emotions. I smiled at tender moments between Dakota and Logan, raged with them, and Eden, as they all tried to bring down the Prophet, got sentimental when reading scenes between Hawthorne and Shay, and was emotionally blasted to smithereens in the last few chapters.

Read this. You will not be sorry, though you may require a glass of wine, some chocolate, and a box of tissues.

I was gifted an ARC in return for an honest review. And this story is truly a gift!

Great series

The series kept me engaged for the most part. I gave this a four star rating because personally I felt like there was too much action and not enough time spent getting to know the characters. I felt it needed just a bit more depth. However if you love action non stop then this is a series for you! However, even though I felt there lacked a bit of depth I just downloaded the authors next series.

I made it halfway through and then gave up. I just couldn’t wade through yet another battle with gangbangers. This series is short on character development and long on action. If you like action books, that’s ok. But it got dull and repetitive. I realized at halfway through that I don’t actually like or care about any of the characters.

I like the story, but I find myself skipping quote a bit as it takes to long to get to the point. To much describing of everything for my tastes. And the story keeps switching characters all the time, I feel it interrupts the story to much for me to really sink into it.

The third amazing series I've read of Kyla Stone's

I have enjoyed 3 of Kyla Stones series of books now and she is an incredible writer. The way she describes a situation, the surroundings, the feel of a place etc is amazing. And when SHTF she describes the events in utter shocking detail that feels real when you are reading it. Her research into artillery and political manoeuvres is amazing! KS has a serious gift for this. There's a spoiler here: The issue I do have, however, is that in this series she wrote about Reuben dying and said "he'd be going off to Valhalla or wherever the hell they went". This is very offensive to me and upset me as I am of Pagan religion. I have Swedish ancestry so am Swedish - English, I suppose. I'd suspected something when the author described nearly everyone in the compound as blonde (which isn't very likely to occur tbh). Warriors who go off to Valhalla have fallen with pride and courage, not having been an evil murderer who has just been eaten by an alligator. It was really disrespectful writing that and it isn't OK to be offensive about someone's religion and beliefs. It wouldn't have been written about the Hindu religion, I am certain and yet the two religions are the same. The writer seems to have a general distaste for the fairer population, often describing their hair as 'dirty' blonde and once describing their skin as being like mayonnaise in a different series. Everyone else has 'rich brown' or 'warm brown' skin. If someone said dirty brown hair or dirty black hair, you'd assume they hadn't washed it. Why not say, darker blonde or there's a number of appropriate descriptions? Maybe the odd pleasant one? The more affluent of this fair population get similar scathing comments as though none of these people have any depth or pleasantness or a will to survive and I know this to not be true. Maybe these people have worked hard or been fortunate enough to hone a skill that is in demand. Maybe they have created employment. I think some people are entitled and spoilt, sure but not all of them and not just the fair ones too! It is a theme across Kyla Stone's books. Having the intelligence to be in a successful business means you have the skill to adapt. I have never seen books with so many references to nearly every character's culture. It's a weird one isn't it because a character was just looked at to be considered Chinese - American. Can this be certain and what if the person's parents were born in America but their grandparents were Asian (maybe Chinese)? Do you call someone with Danish parents Danish-American? All the horrible characters have been the fairer type and all the considerably intelligent and almost angelic types were black. This is a theme over all of the 3 series of books that I read. I'm not sure if the author is trying to press a point there but I don't feel it's needed and may seem, if anything a little patronising. These comments seem harsh but there was so much of it that I felt I needed to say something. I assume that Kyla Stone is white because the female protagonist is always white often with auburn hair. This is quite usual as the author usually identifies themself, visually in this way to enable to immerse themselves in the story. I didn't warm to Logan and Dakota as much as I did the other main characters in her other series however. I very much liked the main female character in the series about the solar flares that had been imprisoned by a pyscho before she'd escaped into a newly dystopian world. I didn't feel like I cared about Logan and Dakota as much. The main characters in her other series, I really did care about and I liked them immensely but I understand that the characters are written very well like real people who aren't perfect etc. I just thought Dakota to be cold and quite cruel and narcissistic at times. Logan did have his strange darkness from having murdered a woman and been responsible for that person's child's death. Other than that I'd find it difficult to describe his character. He seemed quite weak at first but did pull himself together eventually. I very much liked Shay and Julio. I really wanted Julio to survive so he could be with his family and I really wanted Shay and Hawthorne to be together so I was relieved that despite the dangers, they strode through. Eden aswell, I had a lot of empathy for. I'd like to know what happened to Sister Rose Marie (I hope I've remembered her name correctly). I think she deserved acknowledgement for what she went through and what she did on a number of occasions putting her own life at serious risk to save others. That extra bomb would have happened aswell if not for her bravery. I'm glad she survived but I really wanted to know where she ended up. Maybe she could have worked alongside Shay or helped look after the children from the compound where she lived as she would have been a familiar face. The most intriguing character for me was Maddox. He was equally terrifying and yet human.

Surviving the blast is only the beginning...

Following a catastrophic nuclear attack which targeted 13 major cities, millions are wiped out in an instant while others are left to deal with the after effects of radiation poisoning. Troubled teen, Dakota Sloane has been working in a bar in Miami, trying to save enough money to get her younger sister Eden, out of foster care. Two years ago, they escaped the Everglades from a cult called the Shepherds of Mercy, which is run by the fanatic Solomon Cage. Dakota has changed her name and stayed incognito since.

Minutes before the attack, Dakota spots Maddox Cage, the cult leader’s son, getting into a taxi through her bar window. Realising he’s tracked down Eden’s whereabouts, Dakota decides to up her plans to leave with Eden sooner than she had anticipated. As different cities come under attack on the news bulletin, Dakota comes to a horrifying realisation and is able to text Eden seconds before a blinding light flashes and Miami also succumbs to an attack.

Following the blast, Dakota and a few survivors from the bar seek refuge in a movie theatre as they wait for the radiation levels to drop. The survivors include Julio, the bar owner, Shay who has some medical experience and Logan Garcia, a loner, haunted by his past who seeks solace in a bottle.

Forty eight hours later, Dakota’s anxiety for Eden has worsened as she suspects that Maddox may have survived and will possibly head out for her sister. Sensing that he can handle himself with a gun, she makes a deal with Logan; access to a secure safe haven deep in the Everglades in return for accompanying her while she rescues her sister. Logan agrees. With Julio and Shay also insisting on going her, the group set out on a journey through wasteland that is fraught with danger not only from radiation but from aspects of humanity itself.

As the books progress we learn that the Shepherds of Mercy have been behind the attacks all along. Can Dakota save her sister and prevent another catastrophic attack on US soil?

This boxset consists of all five books in what has been a tense and exciting post apocalyptic survival series. Each instalment is told from five points of view; Dakota, Eden, Logan, Maddox and Shay. From the offset, I found myself totally immersed in the premise of the story. The impact on survivors from a nuclear explosion where knowledge and survival skills could be the only thing standing between life and death? Luckily our group has Dakota, who thanks to her mentor Ezra, has been taught survivalist skills.

The strength of the book lies in the fascinating world building that the author has managed to create. It’s apparent throughout that the author has done a lot of research which sets it apart from other novels of similar themes.

The characters were quickly introduced, developed and understood. Dakota, Eden and Logan are troubled protagonists, each with a dark past which is only hinted at in this instalment. We learn that Dakota and Eden were sent to a religious compound by their Aunt, following the death of their parents. They escaped and sought refuge with Ezra, a hermit who lived in the Everglades. While Dakota is tough, resilient and a survivor mainly because she’s HAD to be, Logan chooses to drown his demons in a bottle. Eden, despite being alone and hearing impaired, handles her situation admirably for a fifteen year old. Her faith in her sister, unshakable. The secondary characters were equally appealing. Ezra, Julio, Shay, Park and Hawthorne came across as decent, caring people. Unfortunately when society breaks down, it brings out the worst of humanity too and our group are exposed to its good and bad aspects.

All in all, the author has delivered an intriguing well executed, gritty edge of your seat box set. The plot moves along fluidly and while certain scenes crackled with tension, others genuinely tugged at my heartstrings. This has been a fantastical multi layered journey of self discovery, powered by adept character development, relentless pacing and building to a climax that is neat and satisfying. I’ll definitely be looking out for future works from the author.

Trigger warnings, religious cult, patriarchal societies, physical and mental abuse, child marriages, torture, gang related violence.

I'd rate this boxset 4.5 stars but enjoyed it enough to round it up to five. Whilst the first couple of books move at a slower pace as the main characters make their way through a devastated Miami after a terrorist nuclear attack, the latter books allow the plot to streamline a bit more as the characters continue to develop and more of their backstory is revealed. I'm a big fan of this author and Nuclear Dawn reads similarly to her other series (and by that I mean shares similar themes - they're not repetitive). There's a good amount of action, slow burn romance and an overarching feel of good vs evil. The focus of this boxset is terrorism of the homegrown variety, spinning the USA into turmoil after a series of coordinated nuclear attacks take place across the country.

The story is told from a variety of characters' points of view, with Dakota and Logan being at the forefront. The former is the female lead of the story and while a lot of her story is given in small doses throughout the book similarly to the other main characters, Dakota is definitely the star. Having survived a rough childhood being dragged up by a fundamentalist, religious cult, Dakota is a strong female lead who trusts no one and is singularly focussed on getting her sister to safety in the Everglades. The bomb attack places her with Logan, an alcoholic and former gang member. As their paths intertwine, they form a connection with one another and are determined to protect Eden, Dakota's non-verbal younger sister. Add to that a world gone crazy in the aftermath of the attack and I was entertained right up until the last page. There were ghosts from the past aplenty as the River Grass cult return to take back what's theirs, gang attacks, food shortages and medical emergencies from the nuclear fallout to keep me turning the pages. Overall, this was a winner for me and while I would have liked a slightly longer ending because I'm greedy like that, all loose ends were tied up and I finished the book as a happy camper.

I am so happy I had the entire box set! Kyla Stone is a first-time author for me and now has a fan for life! I had this series on Audible and Kindle which worked out perfectly because I never missed a beat with the story. The narrator was awesome and kept you engaged, but at the same time, while reading the story you were still right in the middle of it all. This series had me on the edge of my seat the ENTIRE time. I was completely engrossed. This story has everything. It has action, craziness, insanity, and anarchy. BUT, it has an intense show of loyalty and love. It even has crazies in a cult! The most exciting part of this story is that it could actually happen. The entire story keeps you engaged from start to finish. You won’t be able to help yourself and will have to continue to turn the pages. It is so real that you can actually picture yourself in the middle of the chaos and it will have you thinking about how you would react in the same situation. On top of it, the action never stops. The story is told in a very vivid way that puts you right in the middle. And as the story escalates, it never falls flat. Very well done and I look forward to reading more by Kyla Stone.

A great series! Exciting, page turning, thrilling and full of adventures. The journey continues along with the violence. The gangs are getting bolder with the chaos of the people. Everyone is trying to flee the nuclear fallout, no one is safe. Dakota is focused on finding her sister, Eden. The unthinkable happens first. Maddox has found Eden. Everyone is surprised that Maddox is Eden’s brother, but he uses her to get to Dakota. The group rallies with Dakota. Maddox escapes. Dakota must protect Eden and find her way back to Ezra. They seem to get blocked at every turn either by the chaos of the people or the gangs who are out for revenge. The government even seems to get in their way. Finally, they are on their way to get to Ezra. The continuing story of Dakota is tense, learning to trust, learning to allow others to help and opening herself up to the truth. A great read.

Heart wrenching in more ways than one

Kyla Stone is an artist who uses words rather than paints to create an amazing story like a huge mural! The storyline is gut wrenching but filled with amazing characters who rise to the occasion over and over again. It’s very hard to write one review for 5 books... there’s so much to tell. The evil ones are despicable and yet Maddox Cage comes forth as a complex person who needs redemption in the end. Dakota and Logan grow on you as they grow on each other. The others, Shay, Julio, Ezra and the rest seem to become a “person”... it’s the epitome of the “Esprit de Corps” that we see develop in them that binds them together. I highly recommend this series even though it breaks your heart over and over... May America never see anything like this is my prayer.

Kyla Stone’s Nuclear Dawn series is addicting. She has woven a cast of characters with very real human flaws and failings all trying to survive a nuclear attack on America. Ms. Stone has packed this story with very believable scenarios and action. While reading this series on one level I realize it is fiction, but the scenarios the characters encounter leave me wondering how long it would take for residents of a city to devolve into a dog-eat-dog mentality after some apocalyptic event. This story immediately grabbed my attention and kept me on edge until the final word. While it is nice to finish the series, to bid adieu to these characters after investing so much time following them on their adventures is bittersweet.

Exciting Read

I really liked the characters especially Dakota and Logan. Both flawed and vulnerable. I enjoyed the way they worked through their vulnerability and came through on the other side by the time the book ended. I would have enjoyed more mention of their romance but that is just me. It was implied, I know. The jury is still out on Maddox. I think he was all over the place character wise and I’m not really too sure how I feel about that and about him in particular. He’s the only one I had doubts with . Loved Julio and Shay with their upbeat personalities. You need some positivity to counteract the the doom and gloom of the apocalypse! The Collier brothers were a hoot.

A horrifying story of what could happen in the event someone wanted to disrupt the U.S. and create havoc opening an opportunity for a take over of our government. Very detailed and well researched. I found some of the repetitive comments made by Dakota and Logan about their past lives and the guilt they carried a little frustrating as it seemed it was a filler to make the story longer. I still don't believe that anyone could have done the fighting they did with the injuries they had but, then, I've never been in that situation. It is also a good study on human nature and what we let ourselves believe.

Great series

I started this series thinking it would be just another apocalypse story. I had just finished a series and I couldn't find a book to read. I've read this author before so I decided to give it a try. Boy was I wrong about it being just another story! This series was so good. It started with a nuclear blast and just took off. The multiple character developed their own personalities. Whether good or bad you knew who they were. I sat on the edge of my seat for a lot of the story but I also laughed and cried. This was such a good series but I finished it. Now what am I going to read!? I kind of wish there was more to this series. Oh well! Good job Kyle Stone!!!

Lovable, flawed characters

By making the main characters imperfect human beings, Ms Stone has created a realistic and terrifying story. It would be difficult not to love Dakota, Eden and Logan. Other characters become people I’d love to meet.
The thought of nuclear attacks by domestic terrorists is chilling beyond belief but still so possible it makes me shake at the thought! These books are written so well that I almost forgot that I was reading a book and was instead living in the story.
Well done Kyla Stone! You have become one of my favorite authors!

I never wanted to part from this story, it was so compelling that every free moment I spent reading more of this series. I found myself cheering on these characters, crying for these characters, and on the edge of my seat to see how the story played out. I absolutely loved this book series! Kyla Stone did a phenomenal job. This is the second series that I have read of hers, consider myself a fan of her work. Thank you for bringing this series to life and bringing me on a journey. Dakota, Shay, Julio, Eden, Logan, and others it has been my pleasure.

Nuclear Dawn

This box set is the second postapocalyptic series by this author that I've read, back to back, with a third cued to read next. They are that addictive. As with Edge of Collapse, the characters in Nuclear Dawn are well developed, though it took a little longer for me to warm to this series' mc's. World building is also great, with detailed descriptions and snippets of survival tips for a large metro area that has been hit by a nuclear bomb and a rural area in the Everglades with it's own unique challenges. I'm looking forward to beginning the next one.

Well researched book that has the technical details in order and floods up with a rational plot and well developed charscters

Much better tan most I have read. The background technical details are well researched and presented clearly so there is a well defined canvas on which to paint the story. The plot in perfectly reasonable unfortunately. The characters are well developed and not overly heroic or superhuman. They deal with the situations realistically. Overall a good story that held my interests

Post-apocalyptic Box Set - so good!

This box set is a great bargain and will give you an excellent look at the talented writing of author Kyla Stone. I am not a speed reader. I appreciate the work that a writer does while crafting a story. The characters, the events, and the location are all critical and must be believable. Even in sci-fi, there has to be some anchor in reality.
In these books, the threat and reality are all too real.
I enjoyed the series as I have other writings by this author.
I highly recommend the audible performance by Stacey Glemboski.

I thoroughly enjoyed this apocalyptic series, where nuclear bombs are dropped on American cities. It switches between various characters, all of whom fit into the plot extremely well. I liked the fast-paced writing style, the twists and turns and the depth portrayed through thoughts and feelings.

It was a disturbing story because it highlighted the possibilities of what can happen in the real world and what narrow-minded, power-hungry people will do to attain their goals.

Engaging throughout and a box set I would highly recommend to those who enjoy this genre.
