Beyond the Veil is an adult vampire romance novel that was loosely based on the fairy tale Sleeping Beauty. It contains mature content, adult language, and violence. Though this is the first book in the Vampires of Velum Mortis series, it can be read as a standalone.
Stephanie Summers is a paranormal and contemporary romance author. She graduated from West Virginia University with a degree in accounting, though writing is her true passion. Stephanie seemed to always have a story or two or ten running around in her mind. At the ripe old age of 30, she finally decided it was time to put aside the thought that she didn't have what it took to write a novel and began writing her first story.
She has since written her first paranormal series, The Willow Creek Vampires Series, with Craving (Book #1), Haunting (Book #2), Awakening (Book #3), and the short companion story, The Bludworth Chronicles: Origin, available now. Her short story, Love Forgotten, was chosen to be published in Stardust: A Futuristic Romance Collection, and another short story, Saved by the Bear, is available now. Her contemporary rock star romance, Take Me On, was released in 2015, with the sequel, Take Me Home, released early in 2016.
I thought I'd try another vampire book since I hadn't in a while, thought the genre might have moved on since like 2008 NOPE. Lol, there needs to be a warning label for the mate trope. MAJOR squick. I had an almost-fun time getting to 34% but no, NO MORE MATE TALK. The inverted sleeping beauty trope sounded a lot more interesting in the summary and it was dispensed with way too quickly. THAT could have been a good book, with the girl having the upper hand for more of it. As it stands, it felt like every male character was patronizing the hell out of her. I get enough of that in real life, and combined with everything else gross in this, PASS.

I liked it. This is an exciting adventure of shocking proportions. There are secrets, disappointment, falsehoods, attraction, betrayal, death, justice and everlasting love. There were so many unexpected twists and turns in the story that made it hard to put the book down. I was glued to each page. It reads at a medium to quick pace. It is not a long read and it is very entertaining. I did like both of the main lead characters and the villain in the piece was a surprise. The betrayal to the heroine was very sad. But the romance and chemistry between the main characters was HOT!!! I did enjoy reading this book. I received an Advanced Readers Copy of this book via Hidden Gems and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Well, what to say… Have you ever read a book that is so bad that it’s actually good again? A book that is so full of clichés and so obviously a romantic, dreamy fanfiction written on a cold, lonely December night?
Just let me give you an example:
At 40% of the book we already have:
- a heroine who is destined to be the mate of a sexy vampire and is thus exiled by her fellow vampire slayers and nearly burnt at the stake for the crime of waking him because no one ever bothered to tell her about her fate thus preventing her from waking him, be a good slayer and kill the king of all vampires (and is convinced that the greatest love story known to mankind is destined for her)
- an (ex-) fiance, who never really loved her and only agreed to marry her because he loved her father so much, has a girlfriend on the side (to make him even more of a jerk) and now does everything in his power to murder her as brutally as possible (you know, typical villain stuff)
- an incredibly sexy vampire (as in the usual stuff, sexy abs, long, flowing hair, piercing eyes, you get it), who is not only the king and her destined mate and love her for all eternity but also not so different from a human man, apart from the blood drinking (he eats, breathes, fathers living children with mortal women etc)
And that’s only 40%, mind.
You can figure out for yourself how the rest of the book goes.
So if you are looking for the most cliched book of your lifetime, living out all the fantasies that young women dream of when thinking of sexy vampires and the most romantic story ever told, go for this book.
If you are actually looking for a nice, good, romantic fantasy read involving vampires, skip this one and read something (literally anything, even Twilight would be better) else

Have you ever read something so cringy and Hilarious but you just can’t stop reading because the story is so pathetically unpredictable? That is what this was.
The first 30-40% of this book was solid and I thought I was gonna enjoy the whole thing and wound up with a 3.5 or 4 star read. But this just went way fucking downhill.
First, we’ve seen this story and plot so many fucking times. Naive human girl meets sexy vampire king. For some reason their mates, but oh no it’s because of a witch and her 2 sisters that have names that all sound the same.
The sex in this book was very poorly written, the dirty talk was cringy, and the amount of times the male character says ‘my queen’ makes me wanna gag.
The characters were fine. I liked our main girl (forgot her name 5 minutes after reading the book), she was strong and feministic. Our main guy character Liam was an ok dude. Kinda alpha male trash (but he’s not a werewolf haha. I’m so punny) but he’s cool I guess.
Our villain guy was an idiot and very bad at insulting our main character. Really dude. - ‘I’ve never loved you, I’ve always been in love with that bitches name I can’t remember because I don’t fucking care enough’. I mean really dude? Come on.
We also get no insight as to how our main characters dad dies, and the angst between him and the witch bitch.
Their claimed to have been a plot between Liam and our main bitch before she woke him up, but we don’t see any of it. How am I supposed to believe that bullshit when I have literal no flashbacks or physical evidence?
And having sex while a fucking dagger is stuck in your side? Really Liam, just because it’s been 20 years since you’ve put your dick in someone, doesn’t mean u can’t fucking wait Jesus.
Another thing that irked me was the pacing! The author doesn’t know how to fucking pace a book. Our main character we’re having sex, in a bedroom, in a cabin, in the woods, 2 DAYS INTO THEIR ‘RELATIONSHIP’! Wtf?! The pacing was just horrendous.
We get no world building and absolutely no insight on how vampires started, how long they’ve been living, what’s the human world like, what about the werewolves, Fae, and witches?
I mean really what the actual fuck was this?! I just don’t understand what I just read.
I mean it’s a paranormal romance so I don’t know why I was expecting something so great. I just found it on kindle unlimited and read it.
But overall, I kinda hate this book. I don’t really give books one stars, but wtf was this shit?! I mean come one, seriously?
- Another shit review from Abi
- I’m 5 books away from my 50 books goal now and I’m super excited because then I’ll have all of next year to read instead of the half of the year I had this year!
I have NO idea how old this author is, but this book reads like it was written by a teenager trying to be an adult. It needs serious world and character building. Maybe more original names than Cordelia in a book about vampire slayers - if you’re old like me, then you know what I mean by that. How, HOW can the all mighty king of the vampires be put under a spell, less than 2 days after being awakened from another spell ? Really ? There were just too many things wrong in this book. Not sure how it got such high ratings.
Another Hidden Gem! This is Delia and Liam's story. Ms. Summers did a great job setting the stage for what this reader thinks will be a fantastic series. The character development, and back ground information was deep and satisfying. Fated mates. Liam gets this, as he has lived a thousand years. Delia is only twenty-one and Damon has put many doubts of her worth in her mind. A few sentences spoken to Delia by Liam in her mind will not ban all of her insecurities at once. I loved this story and have already started Sydney and Stellan's story! Definitely 5 stars for me!
I simple book that I read within the afternoon, that I happened to really enjoy. I’m not usually a fan of Slayer/Vampire romance novels yet the way in which the story played out meant that I managed to get over this. The story wasn’t stretched out nor did it feel repetitive, I was able to feel the love interests connection and was rooting for them from the start. If vampires and mate bonds are your thing, I can definitely recommend!
Vampire King William ("Liam") has been placed under a sleeping curse. Delia, a vampire slayer, is tasked with killing him to prove her worth to the rest of the slayers. When she finds him, instead of killing him, she is drawn to him in ways she can't explain. Taking a note from Sleeping Beauty, Delia kisses the sleeping vampire, waking him up. You see, they're fated mates!
I think the premise had really good potential. I really liked how strongly Liam felt for Delia right from the start. He's strong and sexy, but very respectful and supportive. Kind of a nice change from the overly dominant/possessive heroes that I'm usually drawn to. Delia was also interesting. I liked how strong-willed she was. I also liked how she was able to adapt to her quickly changing life and accept Liam fairly quickly. I get annoyed when heroines are so resistant to the person who is clearly meant for them.
Unfortunately, the pacing is very off. The book is pretty short and almost halfway through, the main characters were already admitting their love for each other. I get that they're fated mates, but by that point, they'd barely spent any time together. We didn't get any relationship building. In fact, between Liam being asleep (twice) and Delia taking off alone to the vampire city, they barely had scenes together. It was all very rushed.
Delia was raised by the vampire hunters and taught to hate them, kill them and even got engaged to another vampire hunter who is her mentor. She is sent on her first mission to kill the sleeping vampire king, Liam. But when she gets there things go wrong in every way they can. She can't find it inside her self to kill him and instead she thinks he's the most beautiful man she's ever seen and decides to kiss him which breaks a curse that was put upon him by a witch.
Delia finds out she's been lied to from the very start and if she's just been given all the information about herself, things might have gone differently. She finds out she's been betrayed over and over again by the people she thought she could trust. She has no where to turn but Liam and he's quite smitten with her and swears she's going to be his queen, his mate but she can't see that happening even though he's gorgeous and seems different from the vile, dangerous creatures that she's been trained to believe vampires are.
Both Delia and Liam have a big fight on their hands not only from the vampire hunters but also from the other vampires who might not want Liam to come back and take over again. This book had romance, secrets, betrayal, great action scenes, and two main characters who were destined to find each other.
Book: Beyond The Veil Read By: Ebook and Audio Author: Stephanie Summers Narrator: Kyo Sija Genre: Paranormal Romance Main Characters: Delia Adams Recommend: Yes Spice: 🌶️️ 🌶️️ Age recommendation: 18-30+ Years My feelings:
Buffy the vampire slayer meets sleeping beauty.
“You truly were the one destined to wake him. You kissed him, right?”
Did I like it… yes I didn't mind this at all. It was like blow your socks off amazing, but still an great short read.
“She couldn’t possibly realize who she was to me yet, but still… She was mine and the thought of her with him sickened me.”
The audio was narrated wonderfully, and it had a HEA.
“We were meant for one another, fashioned from the same cloth in the great beyond.”
It doesn’t have a few smut chapters but I would allow late teenagers to read this.
“I didn’t dream of a child. I dreamt of you,” he said, brushing the knuckles of his right hand against my cheek. “Of the magnificent woman you are today… I dreamt of what we will become, the love we will share, and the children born out of our union. I dreamt of my mate. My queen.”
Recommend if you're after a short read that isn’t overly consuming.

The author tried so hard to write a vampire story with a badass female lead but it just fell flat. The ending is rushed and Liam spends most of the story unconscious. The few chapters we get from Liam's POV are too short. Harman has a bigger role in this story than the male lead.
Also, the first sex scene is so out of place. Like the dude has a knife embedded in his side. I get that he knows that he's going to be cursed again whether the knife is out or not and wants to have that memory to accompany him into his dreams but she goes from frantically trying to get the knife out to save him, to boning him.
It was so difficult to root for Delia and Liam to succeed when there's nothing to connect me to the characters as a couple. The whole 'we're mates so we love each other' BS hardly ever makes for a good romance. Especially when there's no substance between the characters.

The first few chapters were dragging a bit for me, as there were too many thought monologues of the female protagonist, resulting in me not really caring for her at all, as I found her to be too whiny and self-centered. And although events were explained while the story was developing, I had the niggling feeling in the back of my mind that I was missing something. However, after the first few chapters, things picked up, the plot thickened, and that is when I started to really get into this story and yes, even changing my mind about the "heroine". All in all, not a bad start to a new series, and even if there was no nail-biting suspense, it was interesting enough to make me want to continue and get the second book.
She wants to follow in her father's footsteps and be a slayer. She has been training for a very long time. They give her a really hard one the first time out. They have an ulterior motive for it too. A witch cursed a vampire king years ago and put him to sleep and she is the only way to wake him. She doesn't know any of this. She is engaged to her trainer. There are a lot of complications. She falls for the vampire king and things get really exciting. It is fun, exciting, suspenseful, dramatic and so much more. I just loved this and hated to see it end. I received a review copy by booksprout and voluntarily review it.
This is my 1st read and review for this author and it’s a fantastic story I loved it. Delia is a vampire slayer in training she is sent to the council to be given a mission and that is to go and kill the vampire king. When Delia finds the king he is sleeping but instead of killing him she had the urge to kiss him and then she did. Liam the vampire king awakens from a curse that was put on him a long time ago by a witch and it was his true love’s first kiss, Liam has been waiting for his mate for over 1,000 years and now he has her. Now together they are going to take back what belongs to Liam. This is a fantastic story and I highly recommend this book it’s definitely well worth the read.
It had a great start then kind of lost me with some cheesie so-so writing. Then it improved & then would lose me. Overall a nice change of pace on vamp romance. Had an interesting concept that maybe the author has issues with getting from mind to paper in the beginning but as you read the story unfolds better as the writer gains more confidence or the story flows better to the paper. It definitely improved midway and further in. Again overall good read & because it improved for me gave it 4 ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️. Recommended
I received this little gem 💎 for free as apart of an ARC for book 2 so may properly rate it, for my honest opinion and review. HAPPY READING!!
First let me state that I received an Advance Reader Copy, (ARC), but this in no way influences my review. I always leave an honest review. Also this author is new to me, and I hope it won't be my last.
OMG!!! This story is gr8. A slayer sent to kill the vampire king only to kiss him instead. A vampire king who's waited a thousand years for his mate. Good witches and bad ones. Wars and almost wars. So much happening throughout this story. I loved it and couldn't put it down. I recommend this read. 5 Thumbs up
The gender swap sleeping beauty bit caught my eye, even though it was going to have vampires and all the vampire tropes included, but decided to give it a try. I didn't think the story was too bad for about 30%, even if words were missing from sentences, and sometimes punctuation too. But after she woke Liam, it went down hill fast. The missing words, backward descriptions, and clunky descriptions (if any) became too much. Plus the storytelling became too... juvenile. I hit 58% and wondered why I was trying to force myself to read it, and stopped.
Okay... is pretty much my review. I love paranormal stories and this one I did enjoy the stories premise and the interactions between the different beings. I liked how strong the heroine is. You may ask, Why the low stars? Without spoilers, there are multiple times where the hero/heroine could have been killed by the crazy villain... I couldn’t quite ‘believe’ that’s how he would have behaved. Perhaps, there was opportunity to explore her aura and her mother... perhaps she was a fae?
4 stars for Beyond the Veil by Stephanie Summers. This is book one in the Vampires of Velum Mortis series. This is my first book from this author but it won’t be my last. This is the story between Delia, a slayer and Liam, the vampire king. The book has this forbidden romance aspect to it. The book had everything I enjoy in a story. It had suspense, romance, betrayal, unpredictability, and so much more. The romance and chemistry between Delia and Liam can be felt while reading. I enjoyed every part of this story and I am looking forward to reading more from this author.
The first book in the Vampires of Velum Mortis series a story I enjoyed reading the story flows smoothly from page to page it is well written. A story that kept me on the edge of my seat with all it's twists and turns, betrayal, villains, slayers, vampires and romance. I will be watching .for the next book to be out.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Worldbuilding is almost non-existent. Magic is never explained, and it seems to do whatever is most convenient for the plot. Vampire lore is somewhat explained, but there's a lot missing. Characters are Ok, but a bit one-dimensional, especially Liam. Some things and people come out of nowhere. It was entertaining, though.
This story was exciting, entertaining and just plain enjoyable to read. It was a very entertaining and interesting book. Stephanie is a great storyteller with a fantastic imagination!.
This is a well written story. The characters are interesting. It seems to have moved a little to fast. Could have had more character development and more detail.
It was a Great beginning but I lost the enthusiasm for the second go around and I wanted more time in the vail it felt almost like a hunger games plot. More fun and interaction between the lovers. But I will read the next
This book started well & I settled down to a good read. Sadly around the half way mark it lost the plot. Definitely a book of two halves, the first part good, the second, absolute rubbish. No more of this series for me!
If you can get past stupid decisions and the instant crazy passionate love, it is an interesting story. Is wish they was more to the plot since a lot of things were assumed and not explained. I doubt I'll continue the story.
Fun, quick and sweet read to start off the year. I look forward to reading more from this series. I adore forbidden love ❤️ finding a way and a man that supports the woman he loves.
