The Sonamire Empire and the Kingdom of Dyn have been at war for as long as anyone can remember. But when the fighting comes to an end, Sonamire’s seventeen-year-old princess, Sol Rosebone, suddenly finds herself as the political bridge between their territories. Betrothed to an enemy prince known to kill men for sport, Sol flees from her home with nothing more than a direwolf trained to protect her, and Magic she can't control.
When the irresistibly charming—and only slightly arrogant—Fynn Cardinal rescues her from a man intending to sell her as a slave, Sol is whisked away onto a pirate ship known as the Refuge. Fynn’s rag-tag crew of runaway teens welcomes her with open arms, but only because Sol’s keeping secrets: she doesn’t tell them about her Magic, and she certainly doesn’t tell them she’s a princess.
As the Captain of the Refuge, Fynn’s keeping secrets of his own.
All he’s ever wanted was to sail the Emerald Sea and search for the legendary Dragon’s Heart, the rumored source of all Magic. In a race to find the Heart before Sol's wicked betrothed, who plans to use its power to eradicate Sonamire from existence, Fynn drags Sol along to aid in his hunt for the treasure. But Fynn soon realizes there might be more to Sol than meets the eye, and she might just be the key to finding what Fynn has been looking for.
If you're looking for a pulse-pounding, witty, character-driven, nautical adventure, look no further!
I confess, this isn't my first time reading Sins of the Sea. I had the privilege of doing so some months ago, when it was still young and raw. I loved it then, and I love this new, polished version even more so now.
Not only does Sins of the Sea have an engaging plot with equally engaging characters, it has breathtaking prose. The narrative is smooth, nearly flawless in its delivery, and the plot's progression was written with great attention to detail and care.
Each character is vivid, standing out from the others in a way that makes them memorable, and makes them feel like old friends. It was easy to get wrapped up in their obstacles and their relationships with one another, to get lost in the pages as Sol fled her kingdom and became an irreplaceable member of the Refuge. I felt her character was realistic, and it was so refreshing to see someone not falling back on the "Bad-Ass Heroine, TM" that so many others do without any growth being done with the character; because no mistake, Sol does grow, and she does show some badassery of her own. Likewise, I loved the other characters as well, especially Fynn, Riel, and Amael; the familial relationships between them, the bickering and sibling-esque teasing... It showed them as being family in the ways that truly matter.
I'm sad that I'll have to wait for Book Two, but I know when it's done, it will be well worth it. Such an incredible book, and one I highly recommend to lovers of Fantasy, nautical themes, and trope subversion.
God bless this book for providing me some escapism from this hell week
That being said... it was just okay? It doesn't help that I recently read two books that I feel like were combined to make this book. It wasn't a ground-breaking book in terms of tropes and what-not, but like I said, it really helped me calm down.
However, I really didn't like Sol, which I feel bad for, but I just didn't get her. She was overly naive and didn't seem to have a lot of skills to contribute?
And like I said before, the two prominent side characters of color are jokingly called heathens which, yikes. It was definitely not malicious, but still. Yikes.
All that being said, this is apparently book 1 and I feel like maybe the way it's set up, book 2 could be a bit more interesting?
Sins of the Sea is a refreshing YA fantasy that I couldn't put down! I am not ashamed to admit that I read it in one sitting. It had everything I look for in a book: beautiful prose with a poetic quality, captivating characters with dynamic relationships, and plot twists that made me sit back and absorb long after I finished.
It also graces readers with surprising humor and heart! I feel connected with the characters, their struggles and growth. Beyond the characters, I can't leave this review without singing praises of the world building. The folklore, the magic, the politics...I was transported from the first page! This realm is rich and just waiting to be explored.
I don't want to spoil anything, the ending left me hungry for more. I couldn't recommend this book more highly!
This was quite a good read. I loved the whole high-seas adventure aspect, and the magic system was simplistic yet interesting. I particularly liked how it had limitations and consequences of overuse, and it was interesting seeing how Sol's powers unfolded and the effect the dragon scale had in amplifying it.
The characters were a fun bunch. There was a lot of variety, not just of their various races in this fantastical world, but in their personalities, dialogue, and interactions with one another.
Very enjoyable, and I hope I get to see how things go in the next book.
The storyline grabs hold of you from the very first page. It's intriguing and action packed from the beginning. The characters are so well written you immediately care for them and what happens to them. They are engaging, and spirited, funny and loving and really well developed throughout the book. I can not wait for the next installment.
Omg this book is absolutely UH-MAZE-ING!!!!!! I loved all of the characters and their personalities. You really get to know the characters when you read this book. It’s packed full of action, adventure, and the smallest hint of a budding romance. I can’t wait to see what happens to the crew and Fynn. I couldn’t love this book anymore!!
Starts off a bit slow, but once things get rolling it is exciting! World establishment was well done. Characters developed and intertwined interestingly. The story is exciting, and I am definitely looking forward to more in the series.
This was such an amazing and wonderful story and I loved the characters and the story and the magic and everything about this lovely story! I loved Sol and Fynn and everything about both their stories. I loved the instant bond between the two of them and how they worked together. I loved the princess and how she cared with all her heart and was afraid of her magic, of anyone finding out. I loved the captain and how he treated his crew like family, how he took the princess in, how he loved all his heart. I loved how alike they were despite not initially seeming so. I loved the crew and how great they all were and how Fynn took care of them. I died over the ending and I need to know what comes next, because this was just so great and I loved every moment of this amazing story.
