Icehome #8

Callie's Catastrophe

Rate this book
What's a bigger disaster than being stranded on an ice planet with a bunch of aliens, never to return home? Resonating to the biggest jerk of all those aliens, of course. I hate M'tok, and it seems to be mutual. He thinks I'm ugly and unpleasant, and doesn't understand why I don't just fling myself at him. In his eyes, resonance has decided, and that's that. Problem is, resonance keeps pushing us together. And when that doesn't make me jump into his furs...he steals me away from the camp. I can't avoid him if there's nowhere to go.I want to hate him even more for that. But I keep finding out that M'tok isn't who I thought he was. And the man I hate? Doesn't hate me at all...

This is not ok.

Ok, so maybe when you were writing up that trigger warning about mentioning the word "depression" you could have dropped a word or two about the fact that you were also going to write about the female protagonist being drugged, kidnapped, and imprisoned until she was willing to give him sexual favors, a situation I assure you is FAR more triggering for those who have survived it. And no, saying that he was just so kind and loving and respectful of her afterward does not cut it, especially given the manipulation he added to the initial offense. I might also add that having the woman's response be "well you were VERY naughty but I suppose I was being a silly goose so thank you for forcing me to accept that I belong to you, you big, strong man, you!" is an insult to those survivors. I love your books and I've read every one but this one crossed a major line for me. Please fix this in the future. You have no idea how damaging this message can be.

Gets better as it goes on!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Narration: 🎙🎙🎙🎙
Romance: 💚🖤💙❤️
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📙📘
World building: 🌏🌍🌎🌍
Character development: 🥲😳😋😙

The heroine: Callie - she was abducted by aliens just over a month prior to the start of the book, the ship crash landed on an ice planet. Callie had a large extended Cuban family and she is trying to come to terms with the fact that she will never get home. She misses Cuban cuisine, her family and everything from home. She has depression and finds it hard to even get out of bed.

The Hero: M’Tok - He is of the Tall Horn Clan that came from across the waters when the Volcano erupted and destroyed the island. He immediately resonated with Callie, but she doesn’t want it.

The Story: This book goes back to the time of the Volcano when all the new guys arrived from across the water. Callie was depressed, miserable and wanted everyone else to be miserable with her. I think there were too many girls that landed on the ice planet that took way too long to come around and accept the fact that there old life was gone and they needed to start living the new one.

Granted if I were dropped out of this life where there is central heat, online shopping, grocery delivery, 24 hour a day streaming television and movies, sunny beaches in warm tropical places and more, I definitely wouldn’t like it either. But we don’t want to read about people going through a depression and unable to move on. It is just too annoying. We want to read about strong women who bounce back right away and not only survive, but thrive.

It didn’t help that Callie was not nice to M’Tok. You can’t really blame her since she overhears him say she is squat, short, round and has a face like leather. Though she immediately hated him and didn’t even try to understand that the language barrier made what he said worse than what he actually meant. I just didn’t really like her because she was a witch.

Frankly I don’t blame M’Tok for kidnapping Callie. Though it is wrong to take away someone’s choice, neither of them have a choice when it comes to resonance and her denying what they are feeling is causing both of them pain and sleepless nights. Callie refused to even sit down and talk with him. She starts getting nicer as the story precedes. M’Tok is great all the way through, he is calculating at times but is so cute about it that you just have to love him.

The book is told in both M’Tok and Callie’s points of view via dual narration. The narrators are Sean Crisden and Felicity Munroe who did a great job and are both pleasant to listen to. Felicity certainly did the spanish curse words very authentically.

Nope. Nopenopenopenopenope *Trigger warning: sexual harassment, drugging, emotional abuse*

For most characters, believable dialogue, and the attempt to portray depression accurately, I'm giving giving this one 1 star instead of -99999999 (I know that's not a real thing, but I also don't care). Since this is a very common misunderstanding, I'm not gonna hold it against Ms. Dixon, but there is a massive difference between clinical depression and grief. What Callie is dealing with is grief, not depression.

Now for the actual review part. While the blue guys have always been pretty sexist, most of them get their heads out of their asses and understand the value of their mate as a person, not just a womb. Maybe M'tok eventually does, too, but this is one of only a handful of books that made me so unbelievably furious that I couldn't finish it. *Spoiler alert, I guess.*

We know from earlier installments that there are instances of resonance mates that never loved each other (one of the sa-khui's first resonance mate, and someone's parents, I think). So, given the fact that Callie loathes M'tok...you know what? I'll give you the condensed summary of the first couple chapters:
😤Callie hates M'tok, and doesn't want to be with him. M'tok thinks Callie *owes* him sex, regardless of her feelings. She says no.
😠Callie hates M'tok, and rather than listen to a word out of her mouth, he tells her that she is being ridiculous, literally tells her her feelings don't matter because she *owes* him sex. She says no.
😡M'tok harasses Callie in the hopes that his handsomeness, skill, etc. will get her to have sex with him. She says no.
🤬Despite the terrible side effects, Callie is seriously tempted to ask Veronica to turn resonance off. Meanwhile, she is aware that all of the males (and some of the women) think, to varying degrees, that she's ridiculous, that she is too stupid to understand resonance, that she's being cruel, etc. From M'tok's POV, we see that he thinks the sa'khui are stupid to give the females so much freedom, and that they should've domesticated them🌋
💥M'tok decides that he's done tolerating Callie's rejections, and makes a plan to DRUG HER and take her far away from everyone who might, you know, defend her from him, and resolves NOT TO LET HER GO UNTIL SHE FALLS IN LOVE WITH HIM. In other words, while he won't *physically* force himself on her, he will not let her go home until she has sex with him, which is RAPE. But, hey, at least you gave us a trigger warning about mild depression, right?

And then, presumably, she actually f@%#$!g does.

Callie's Catastrophe is book eight in the Icehome series by Ruby Dixon.

To start I’m conflicted on my feelings for this novel. The author does give a “trigger warning” at the beginning of this novel in regards to depression.

Callie our heroine is dealing with this issue. I understand depression and it’s struggles, so I get how hard it can be for some people, but with Callie the author made it really hard for me to like her. She thinks that nothing can be worse than being stuck on the Ice Planet, but then she resonates to an arrogant alien jerk or so she thinks.

M’tok is sweet and does his best to prove to Callie that he is a good mate. I felt so bad for him being stuck with a women who wouldn’t stop and talk to him.

It got very frustrated with Callie in that she wouldn’t even talk to our hero M’tok. She has been told these aliens don’t think like us and her first encounter with M’tok was a miss understanding, but instead of communicating she gets angry and walks away. This behavior goes on for 2-months at least; before M’tok takes maters into his own hands and kidnaps her from the tribe.

You may want to skip this novel especially if book’s with depression trigger your own. I struggled to stay in the story and a few times thought about dnfing this novel. Callie and her constant hatred and negativity of M’tok was not my cup of tea. This is not my favorite and not one I’d read again. I only finished it; because I’m a series reader and going out of order or skipping books is hard for me.

Callie’s Catastrophe was not the book for me. If the blurb intrigues you, I urge you to give it a shot. Just because it did not work for me does not mean it won’t for you. I still recommend that if your looking for some sexy science fiction alien romance then I suggest picking up a Ruby Dixon novel.

"It’s hard to know where the cootie ends and Callie begins, you know? Am I happy because of resonance or am I happy because of him? I don’t know."

description

This was a dumpster fire of a book with barely any redeeming qualities from the previous kidnapping plots in this series. All of the problematic stuff was soothed away by resonance and there were barely any consequences?? I hope this doesn't become a repeat thing.

Callie is one of my least favorite fmcs of the entire series. She comes around in the end but she was so ridiculous in the first half of the book. It makes it hard to like her and even after a 4th reread that has not changed. I do love M’Tok though!

I can safely say that the Icehome series is so far my favorite. Callie and M'tok's relationship allowed important issues such as personal choice to be analyzed within this series. I was fully ready to give this book five stars for having a heroine that refused to just go along with the flow of resonance. Callie's resolve was good for showing that avoiding resonance does not kill you! Although in this series it does seem to make you physically ill and exhausted.

Unfortunately, somewhere between M'tok spiking her tea and Callie being lectured to that a mate and babies are a gift not to be wasted.....I got annoyed. I really enjoyed Callie identifying with her own independent feelings and her own Spanish heritage. I just wish some of these books would take it a step further and give each heroine a different way of co-existing on the Ice planet. Resonance always equals true love and then babies and I'm not sure why.

This book would have been so much better if Callie had experienced resonance to the wrong person and it needed to be rectified. Instead her aggression towards M'tok and her time on the planet is summed up as "anger" or "depression" and she has to get over these feelings in order to be more positive and happy about her current situation. I didn't like this perspective. Callie's feelings are completely normal given the circumstances. She's trading her entire life for alien domestic bliss and anyone in this series that doesn't comply has it forced on them by the cootie. I would welcome some out of the box thinking with this series. To really shake up the concept of mating and resonance whenever someone couples up. It was disturbing that the only alternative suggested to Callie was to give into resonance inorder to have the baby and then part ways with M'tok. It's frustratingly impossible for women on this planet to be anything else but caregivers and baby makers.

Quick(ish) Review

This renewed my interest in Planet Blue Balls. I’ve had a soft spot for this crackilicious series but I had a bit of fatigue once the spinoff books came into play. Even if you love cheese doodles, you can’t eat them every day. However, Callie and M’tok had all the familiar elements of Planet Blue Balls read (big blue protective heroes with a love of the downtown), along with a favorite trope (enemies to lovers). Add in some good Latinx representation and a dash of slow burn, and I didn’t even mind that helluva teaser for the next book. I take it as a good sign that this made me want to check out some of the books I’ve missed, so count me back in on that crazy blue train.

2.5 stars for the H and his virginity and his patience. This ended well but I HATED CALLIE.
She legit took one comment the H said out of context and then spent months hating him. She overreacted constantly and it just wasn’t fun being in her head w all her hate and complete idiocy.
And using her Latin heritage as an excuse for her abysmal behavior pisses me off.

Beach of b*tches strikes again...

description

This series had been going downhill for me for a while, but with Nadine's Champion I thought things were finally getting back on track.

description

Callie is basically Hannah 2.o, and I hated Hannah with a fiery passion. Callie is angry and grumpy, and she deals with it by being incredibly nasty to everyone around her. All of her anger at M'tok is over a ridiculous misunderstanding of something she overheard him say and then assumed what he meant. She never bothered to talk to him about it, just lashed out. She constantly referred to him as "motherf*cker* and "cabr*n", which was a bit much for a guy who essentially did nothing wrong. She assumed he thought she was fat and ugly, and that was enough to treat him like garbage. And even when she learns the truth, there's no apology on her side. Instead, she focuses on finding other things to blame him for.....Um, maybe if you had just TALKED to the guy all of this could have been avoided.

description

I just can't handle plots that completely revolve around a stupid misunderstanding. And I really can't handle heroines that are called "tough" when really they're just rude and self-centered. There are so many better ways that Callie could have shared her frustration and fear of resonance instead of acting like this, but this seems to be Dixon's go-to personality for these Icehome women. Not a fan.

I love this series for the silliness of the alien males!

And M’tok is the perfect example! He just doen't get it that Callie could reason differently from him! For M’tok the resonance is reason enough to mate and he deosn't understand why Callie is so againt him!

There're a lot of his reasoning that are so wrong when you look at them from the female's POV!!!

Still the sheer dedication and absolute love and pretectiveness they feel for their resonance mates is so endearing that I couldn't refuse to justify him/them. Sorry, it's not very feminist from me! LOL

I just love this series!

It was indeed a catastrophe.

This will definitely be my last book. The author gives a trigger warning about depression. Are you kidding me? The heroine is roofied and kidnapped and forced to stay in a cave until she accepts(had sex with) the male lead. How about a heads up about that. SMH. I guess if your not violent it isn't rape. Coercion is ok. As long as your kind to the hostage it's all good. Yeah, it's a no for me.

Update: The longer I sit on this book, the more disappointed and disgusted with it I become. One star. Maybe half a star. I just can't get over the fact the hero wasn't in any way punished — either directly in the text or indirectly through the narrative — for his behavior.

I get what Dixon was going for. She tried to write a story where the hero did something we'd view as horrible but, given his background, he wouldn't consider with the same terrible intentions. This wasn't it. This was a terrible example to use! Make the heroine a vegan or something and they can argue about the moral ethics of killing and hunting animals. Drugging a person and dragging them off somewhere against their will is ALWAYS terrible. I don't know how anyone could even attempt to frame it as something innocent or well-intentioned.

On top of that, previous books emphasized that intention doesn't matter if your actions cause harm. Why is that lesson completely chucked out the window in this one? BEK!?!? Remember that one? The heroine had to treat him like a slave and nearly hit him upside the head with a boot to teach him that. Honestly, that's what Callie should have done in this book. Instead, our "badass" heroine gets her revenge by drugging him back and giving him a blow-job??? Nope.

Skip this one. Both characters are infuriating.

Original review: This was a bit of a dud and the fault lies in the portrayal of the hero. His behavior got a big NOPE from me. He literally drugs and kidnaps the heroine from the tribe in order to compel her to fulfill resonance. This isn't the first time that Dixon has done this, but usually the hero suffers some sort of consequence for his bad behavior. Rahoosh and Bek both got punished for their shit.

Not in this book! In fact, Callie herself, who was very fierce and put up with no bullshit in the beginning of the book, learns of his deception and responds with nothing more than an "oh, you!" and a grin. It was a bit irresponsible of the author, IMO, and told a very harmful message about consent. That's one of the reasons it took me a month to finish this one. I was so disappointed in the ending and the fact that M'Tok basically got away with all his dirty shit.

Beyond that VERY big plot issue, I liked Callie, the dynamic that is building between Marisol and T'Chai, and I liked the back-and-forth between Callie and M'Tok at the beginning of the book (before all the kidnapping).

When the islanders first arrived on the beach, Callie and M'dok instantly resonated. Shocked and unprepared to be anyone's mate, Callie ran off to hide and collect her thoughts. Her new mate, however, had a different feeling, and he was ready to claim his woman. When he pursues Callie after she flees, she overhears him describing her to his brother in less than flattering terms (in the human world); thus, she believes M'dok does not want her as his mate but is trying to make the most of it because resonance always decides. Callie proceeds to ignore M'dok for weeks despite his efforts to try to convince her that they are meant to be. When he overhears the tales of the other males that have inhabited the frozen lands for longer and how they kidnapped their human mates, he decides this is the right approach for dealing with Callie. He waits for his opportunity and grabs her unaware. What will happen when Callie realizes what M'dok's plan is? Will she have a different perspective when she learns that he does find her attractive? And if they can work things out, when they return to the beach, what punishment will await him for kidnapping her?

Overall a decent story line, but not my favorite. Callie was a little too close-minded and quick to judge. Her insecurities also detracted from the story at times.

Plot --- 2.5/5
Main Characters --- 3/5
Supporting Cast --- 3.5/5
Steam Level* --- 3.5/5
Violence --- nothing overly graphic or major
Possible Triggers --- H gives h a herbal drug and kidnaps her
Language --- yes! (lots of f-bombs and c-bombs)
POV --- Dual

*Note that steam level is not a rating so much as a how hot was it: 0/5 - clean; 1/5 - mild (nothing descriptive); 2/5 - 3rd base action/1 home run; 3/5 - now we're getting somewhere (a couple of full-on steamy scenes); 4/5 - yes please! (erotica territory); 5/5 - they did EVERYTHING in this one, y'all

I think it’s time she either hangs her writing hat or ends this series because clearly she ran out of material. This felt like a heavily edited and revised version of “Barbarian Alien” even if not a carbon copy.

This was just hard to read (ok, even harder to read) than the previous ones. I just gave up the moment author decided to call them her Lizzie and Mr Darcy. Like fuck off? You need to be reincarnated 1700 times before you earn the right to be born as Jane Austen’s left shoe!

This is a strange book for me because I really liked the setting and most of the plot, but the characters were annoying sometimes, especially in the beginning.

I love that the setting of this book was away from the beach. The mountain and the cave were really fun to read about.

Callie and M'tok grew on me. They spent a lot of time together and got to know each other throughout the book. I think they work well as a couple and balance each other out.

The misunderstanding at the beginning was pretty unbelievable, though. Why didn't Callie mention what she heard when she was arguing with M'tok for over a month? And why didn't M'tok try a different tactic with Callie when his attempts weren't working?

Callie is so stubborn that she fights against almost everything, even if it goes against your own self-interests. She loves Harry Potter books and references them a lot.

M'tok is fastidious and likes for things to be just-so. When Callie won't give him the time of day, he decides to kidnap her, and he's sometimes sneaky and manipulative to try to win her over. Some of his actions are somewhat understandable because of the differences in culture, but he still handled things badly.

I stopped reading at 24%, it is a specific trigger situation for me for which I am NOT comfortable with.

Since we are in ridiculous land here and reading blue aliens and human romance, where we know nothing is real, the way for me to go offended by this situation is hilarious but there are certain things, where you have to draw the line.

The trigger situation has never happened to me but that doesn't mean I have to be okay with it. That trigger has been openly discussed on Facebook with me and Ruby and other ladies and even though I might not have enough courage to read it, she has graciously accepted that it should have been highlighted as a trigger warning, so it is all cool between us. I still love and respect her as an author and cannot wait to read more books in the series, this one though, might go DNF for me.

Update (26/11/2019):

Somehow I have ended up reading it - more like skimming it. And since I finished this book, I am rating it 2 stars. Apart from a problematic situation, I didn't like MCs as well. All in all, I am still going to pretend this book never happened. Too bad cause Callie was Potterhead (like me) but such a great reference has been wasted in their incomprehensible romance.

I want to start by saying, Icehome and IPB books are on my insta-buy list. I started with the first story in IPB and was hooked. These stories are my chips, and I want em all.

description

For this couple, I kept wondering in previous stories what M’tok could have said or done to make Callie hate and avoid him. Each woman in this series and the IPB series deals with resonance and the shock of losing their former home and life in different ways.

Callie is depressed and angry. Although, it’s more like she is grieving rather than actually depressed. The situation is made worse when she resonates before she feels ready. The final nail in the coffin follows soon after when she hears her new mate describe her as squat, round, short and leather-faced. It’s not what she thinks he meant, but I get the hate.

So, a hilarious dick-slap and putting off resonance for so long makes perfect sense to me. I didn’t really like Callie (Gryffindor...? Yeah right.. You Slytherin..) Yet, I still enjoyed seeing this couple fall in love after overcoming communication issues and finding a way to understand one another’s points of view.

They’re story has it’s cute moments even if it’s not my favorite.
Also, that ending! It’s sweet and setting up for some sort of surprise to come...I gotta know what that is about...

description

S’bren’s story with Penny is supposed to be next, and he’s starting on a bad note for me because he, like his brother M’tok...

Hopefully, the other two from the Tall Horn clan don’t do the same to their mates. Also, I can’t wait for some Shadow Cat stories, and for Sessah, a freaking OG from IPB, to finally get some love.

For me, there’s no skipping a couple’s story, each story in this series and IPB are part of a bigger picture of their respective tribes. So I always read them at least once, and reread my favs.

Once all the stories have been told, I am crossing my fingers for a next generation series.....

She’s a book nerd too! I loved her divvying up all the people by Hogwarts sorting-hat rules.

M’tok is definitely Slytherin. Liar, manipulator, schemer.
He didn’t suffer enough.

Callie should have shaved his head and eyebrows.
Glued his dick to his leg.

Still a sweet story and good addition to the series.
Exciting tease at the end. What was brought?!?!

Hmmm... while I appreciate how the author tried to address the implications of M'tok drugging Callie & made it really clear that it wasn't OK... I just didn't fully buy the grovel to match the crime.

For while now I’ve wondered why these two hated each other so much and fought their resonance. I’m glad it was just a but it went on for longer than I expected. We’ve seen what not giving in to resonance can do and it’s actually scary. Carrying on the tradition of the sakhui M’tok refuses to let his stubborn, fiery mate hide behind her walls any longer so he steal some her away. Unfortunately unlike s9me of the other girls Callie doesn’t find hereself This story was I guess a bit less exciting than the other ones in the sense that there wasn’t a huge zinger like some of the other stories. I loved little things like Callie being a fiery Hispanic. I liked how M’rok manipulated situations for his benefit. I can’t wait to see how her work at embroidery will evolve over time and how fashionable the tribes become now that she’s out of her rut. While a little slower and less thrilling, Callie’s Catastrophe was still a great read and I loved watching these two fight resonance only to be proven as other have before them that resonance doesn’t lie. I wish M’tok’s chameleon like talent would have been used more because I mean come on, that’s just cool. Overall I loved it and no surprise-I can’t get enough of these books and I’m looking forward as always to the next one.

Callie and M’tok’s story! Wow did they have an awful start to their resonance. Geez. Then when M’tok heard about the possibility of stealing his mate away to woo her, he goes with it full steam ahead by drugging her. Not condoning any of that. Callie does finally give in and gets to know him though. I love that he actually helps her with the depression she was in and was such a kind and caring guy. Oh! I also love that Callie loves Harry Potter and thinks of the people in certain houses. 🤣 M’tok is definitely a Slytherin.
