I am writing this review for the whole series, and I cannot recommend it highly enough. Even if one is not a fan of science fiction, or apocalyptic novels, I would recommend it for the realistic vision of a catastrophic event that many writers, not only writers of fiction or fantasy, but sociopolitical writers, have predicted as a very likely scenario in our casual dependency on technology as the savior rather than the divine Author of our entire world. An EMP attack is something that, in a post 9/11 world, must not be discounted.
Some readers might find the story heavy on Christian elements, but they are necessary for understanding how the values and faith of the important characters play a critically important part in their survival. Strong families have always been the foundation of a stable and free society, and a study of tyrannical regimes shows how the undermining of the family, especially a family rooted in tradition and a strong faith in God or higher power, is necessary for tyranny and dystopia to succeed; and it is the members of such families who will fight hardest to bring down the tyrant and free the enslaved subjects of the tyrants.
The Christian worldview rests on the belief in a loving God who designed a world of beings living in love and peace. But unlike the dystopian leaders (including the Hitlers and Stalins of the past century as well as leaders throughout history who claimed the prerogative of divine authority), God did not intend that we be like puppets with Him pulling all our strings, nor pre-programmed propagandized robots living out a story in His Mind. He created us with minds capable of developing good judgments and hearts intended for giving and receiving His love, and free wills to choose how we will accept His will and His plan for us, because love is only true if it is freely given.
The characters in this novel are entirely believable and well-developed, and we meet them in various stages of moral, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual development. We are gradually given the backgrounds and life events which formed their personalities and choices, and are drawn into the adventures that result as they attempt to understand how their world fell apart and attempt to find out if the means exist to restore it, and if they can contribute to the recovery. Grounded in faith and strength of character, possessing, together, skills, resources, and experience that aid in their survival, they move toward Washington, D.C., encounter many life-changing difficulties, vicious humans turned demonic, and life-affirming encounters with others attempting to rebuild, carrying with them the virtues and hopes of their ancestral heritage, falling in and out of love with one another and with their own Gods and idols, bringing their own lights through a desperate darkness.
I loved the ending. No spoilers here. I look forward to Mrs. Brown's next novel.
I loved this whole series. I loved how the well-developed characters were so human - flaws and all. It was wonderful to see some folks struggling through their disbelief, yet coming through to a strong Catholic Faith. There were still others who fought their own demons while still clinging to their Faith to get them through. The only reason I didn’t give this one 5 stars was that, because it had been a while since I had read the last book (right when it came out), i had some difficulty remembering who some of the characters were and where they fit in the story. I felt there could have been just a couple sentences explaining their place in the story, sort of refreshing the reader’s memory. But I would highly recommend this to older teens, young and older adults. I am in my fifties, and I loved it! I am so sad to see this series end.
This whole series was wonderful. I read all five books in less than a month, one of the books in less then 24hrs. The series is refreshing as a fictional series that both keeps the audience engaged, creates characters that grow, develop and evolve and also has a faith element so woven in its nothing but genuine for the characters experiencing them. The plot constantly made me curious how I or my family would react in this type of situation and what sort of trials we could face. The characters were well written and you fall in love with them all during the journey of this series. Highly recommend. Can't wait to see what other books this author has!
I plowed through all 5 books in this series—and thoroughly enjoyed this sweet futuristic “after-a-worldwide-EMP” romance. My general review for the series is at Book 1, “The Light.”
Each book ends with enough “happy for now” to be tolerable, but danger continues to lurk until the end of Book 5. Therefore, before starting on Book 1, check your budget to confirm you’re able to buy Books 2, 3, 4, and 5 as fast as you need to read the next book. I used 30 tissues in Books 4 and 5.
Jacqueline Brown managed to do something most major Science Fiction writers haven't done. Sh wrote a Post-Apocalyptic Series that made me feel hope for our World throughout the entire series.
Another facet of Brown's writing is the way she Imbues her characters with a grounded sense of what love means. From young people in puppy love to mature women and men making the decision to join their lives together, the reader feels what they go through.
The other type of love that is explored is the selfless love of helping others. Whether it is a brother who is a priest or a man who devotes his life to rebuilding a devastated Country, we get to experience their inner struggles to commit to their heart's calling.
I would be remiss if I didn't mention all of the creative ways the Families used to survive. Although I am thoroughly grateful for my home, the descriptions of the families home in North Carolina was cozy, warm and lovely. I could be tempted to live a simpler life.
Because this was a Christian book selection, I was delighted with the way spirituality was handled by the characters. The theme of a better life through belief in Jesus Christ and God as your Savior and leader was offered, modelled by some of the characters but everyone was encouraged to make a personal decision. I liked the options being held open.
I found all five of the books very entertaining. I was thrilled that they were all on Kindle Unlimited. I just read a blue streak through to the end. I will miss the family and what they will accomplish next. I think you'll enjoy the series too.
An amazing journey. I haven't been so immersed in a long time!!
As I was reading these amazing books, a very strong storm hit my area. We had 80 mph straight winds and a tornado. Our power was out for 6 days. My husband and I were blessed to have a small generator, but hundreds of people lost all of their refrigerated food, lots of properties damaged, and some were without power up to 10 days. My niece was trapped under a tree for 5 hours, but survived, though she lost her car and home. It was surreal for me, as I found myself filled with strength as I compared my situation with that of the families in in this series. I thoroughly enjoyed these books. Jacqueline Brown is an excellent writer. I highly recommend this series.
From the very first book of this series to the very end of this book one follows friends and families through the darkness finally into the beginning of a new light. Again I had a hard time putting this book down as I did the others. I laughed and I cried. The tears were for all the happy and sad outcomes in this book, but the feel of God was always there. I'm not a religious person, but without Gods presence the characters in this book would not have had the ability to accomplish all they did. Thank you Jackie for a superb reading!
This was an absolutely wonderful series. It was entertaining but more than that. It is full of lessons that can help you reason through your own issues - we all have some. I’m an unpaid editor - I critique everything and find typos everywhere. There were 2! In the whole series. That to me is incredible. She is such a talented author. Just sucks you right into the story and then won’t let you go. My only regret is that there isn’t a list of other series to be able to keep reading her work. There is one tho so that is where I am headed.
This, the last book of Brown's dystopian Light series, offers a natural and satisfying conclusion to the story of Bria and her friends. The conflict and drama is mostly over, but that's OK. These books have never been about the drama. Their beating heart is the characters and relationships within them. The dystopia is just window-dressing for deeper themes of faith and humanity.
Brown has her priorities straight. I wish the world had more stories and characters like these. 3.5 Stars.
I really enjoyed this whole series of books. I’m sad it’s come to an end. Once I started, I had a hard time putting it down. This series have main characters that show us how flawed we can be as humans. But it also tells of the forgiveness and love that can be obtained through Jesus. It ended well with everything tied together, no loose ends to speculate about. I would suggest reading the books in order as you may be a little lost as to who and what each character has brought to the story.
This series was really good! It kept you so pulled in and wanting to know what happened to these character and where they all ended up. I will say that of the 5 books, this one was my least favorite. It was like the author decided to cram way too much into this one. I felt like Haz and East's story deserved much more tying up. I was thankful for a happy ending but I think too many things were barely covered as the book drew to a close.
I really don't know what I will do without this book series. I totally binged it this last month. It reads so quick, keeps you on your toes, explores deep themes and I love the Catholic influence! Jacqueline Brown is an amazing writer can't wait to see what she comes up with next.
Such a satisfying conclusion to a fantastic series!
I think the realistically could have had one more book, because the pacing in this was a bit off. However, I'm so attached to these characters and was crying my eyes out in the final chapters. I so adored meeting all of these characters and seeing their growth while adapting to the changed world after the EMP.
Ahh I can't believe it's over!! This series was so refreshing to read. It was a long road to get here but I'm glad I made it. This is potentially the longest series I've read in a super long time too.
Lots of ups and downs but I think this was a beautiful conclusion. I'm incredibly appreciative of being recommended this series and for giving it a try although it was outside my usual selection.
After reading the first four books in this series, I eagerly awaited the final one. It doesn’t disappoint. It’s filled with a spectrum of emotions and great insight.
I had been waiting for this last book for some time. It did not disappoint. I am now eagerly waiting for the next one to begin. Jacqueline is a gifted writer and a good soul.
.I was glad to read this last book of the series. I saw a parallel to this time in America and hope we don't go the way of this series but fear we will. The book tied up the stories showed courage, humor, danger, and best of all hope.
Loved all the characters, suspense, and real world futuristic possibilities! Recommend everyone read and think about how easily this scenario could happen in our lifetime.
Thoroughly enjoyed this series! The characters I felt I knew personally, I cried, yelled, cheered, etc eight along with them! Hate that it's over but grateful I read the whole series!
An incredibly well written story of hope and loss and love. I have read many books in this genre, but this series is by far the best. I couldn't put it down and I highly recommend it for both teens and adults, as a thought-provoking, wonderful read.
Very highly recommend the series. The first book was a bit slow getting started, but it was if Jacqueline became more confident in her writing and the story really began to get more depth. I look forward to reading more of her books!
The Light Series 5 Books that are relevant for today
This story could happen! And I believe our loving God would put people in place to help and guide in desperate times. Watching current news - yes - this could happen!
Stunning insight into individuals and our broken world.
Thank you for caring for many personally and for exquisitely portraying how God is love, grace, power. His word is clear and true. May we listen and act on His call.
This entire series has been somewhat of a starter book on pioneering, and in human relationships. The twists and turns of the author are too many to follow, but worth every page turn. I pray you will enjoy thus series as much as I have. Blessings forward.
The conclusion to this series doesn’t disappoint. It was an intriguing set of books showing what could happen when all power is lost. The characters were well developed and showed their strengths as well as their weaknesses.
This author is amazing. It’s hard to find books that can keep your attention that aren’t R rated but Jacqueline Brown has done it. I have read this entire 5 book series in about a week and a half. I can’t put it down. Now I want to read every book she’s written.
I read the entire series. I couldn't put it down. It is frightening that this could really happen to our world at any time and we could become the characters in the books. Although I am not a Catholic, I am Christian, but still appreciated the God Message.
