Опасный пациент

Rate this book

René Lodge Brabazon Raymond was born on 24th December 1906 in London, England, the son of Colonel Francis Raymond of the colonial Indian Army, a veterinary surgeon. His father intended his son to have a scientific career, was initially educated at King's School, Rochester, Kent. He left home at the age of 18 and became at different times a children's encyclopedia salesman, a salesman in a bookshop, and executive for a book wholesaler before turning to a writing career that produced more than 90 mystery books. His interests included photography (he was up to professional standard), reading and listening to classical music, being a particularly enthusiastic opera lover. Also as a form of relaxation between novels, he put together highly complicated and sophisticated Meccano models.

In 1932, Raymond married Sylvia Ray, who gave him a son. They were together until his death fifty three years later. Prohibition and the ensuing US Great Depression (1929–1939), had given rise to the Chicago gangster culture just prior to World War II. This, combined with her book trade experience, made him realise that there was a big demand for gangster stories. He wrote as R. Raymond, James Hadley Chase, James L. Docherty, Ambrose Grant and Raymond Marshall.

During World War II he served in the Royal Air Force, achieving the rank of Squadron Leader. Chase edited the RAF Journal with David Langdon and had several stories from it published after the war in the book Slipstream: A Royal Air Force Anthology.

Raymond moved to France in 1956 and then to Switzerland in 1969, living a secluded life in Corseaux-sur-Vevey, on Lake Geneva, from 1974. He eventually died there peacefully on 6 February 1985.

James Hadley Chase's popularity as a writer is legendary in Africa, cutting across generations over the years. His thrillers continue to excite, with old titles treasured. Like in Believed Violent, where the sequence of deaths and eliminations is terrible. Ruthless powerful man, Herman Radnitz wants a code at all costs and when he wants something badly, human life means nothing to him, including hapless guards, hostesses, even allies. Doctor Forrester's invention must be grabbed and accessed! Other foreign powers are interested of course, plus the CIA and FBI. At least the evil professional killer, Keegan gets his just deserts in the end, shot many times by the young woman he turned into his slave. But nobody actually gets to smile as this work reaches its shattering conclusion...

Really not the best of James Hadley. A blatant beginning with motives revealed very early into the plot than you'd like, it leaves little for the mind to fathom on. A lack of mystery and suspense combined with an unappealing story makes it worse. I was bored out of my wits.

A return to the familiar environs of Paradise City is cause for another JHC inspired bloodbath. But this involves the CIA, FBI, and international espionage. All worked up in one of the most intricately plotted thrillers imaginable. This is a good one. And invincible plan, masterminded by a genius and carried out a icy technocrat who makes use of a Nazi war criminal. And things only get better after that. Fun, intelligent reading.

Well told.  Too many killings.  Believable twists.  Gets interesting once police come into the picture.

What a boring and terrible tale. Can't believe this book was written by Chase. No suspense at all, unbelievable plots, too easy murders, senseless story and a dumb ending. Don't bother to read this one.

This magnificent book is another masterpiece from a great series of stories about the glorious but invented (by the author) Paradise City. This novel was written more than half a century ago. And it is still gorgeous. I am sure it will always remain so. This is a classic of the genre.
The plot is very convoluted and complex – as usual with our favorite author. One scientist who has created the latest alloy goes crazy and kills his wife's lover. The alloy formula is known, but encrypted. Russia (meaning the Soviet Union) and China (then the Cold War was in full swing) are ready to pay huge sums of money for it. Then the cycle of insanely interesting events begins! Of course, the glorious guardians of the law of Paradise City in the person of the police officers, who are well known to us, readers of James Hadley Chase, come into play. By the way, in this book, we meet with a complex, rich, cruel character from several short stories by the author, Herman Radnitz. Now, the reader will get to know him and never forget him. I assure you.

I like how the police are (mostly) competent. It reminds me of a Hoke Mosely story. The main plot/crime is pretty ambitious but really comes down to one person. And two-thirds of the way through the book, this person enters the story and all sense of what was a straightforward story dissipate. What happens is wildly entertaining but also complete bull-spit. I guess if you churn em out like Chase does inevitably there is gonna be a stinker or two.

Though the protagonist is slightly mentally unstable, this is not a psycho chiller/ killer novel. It's a thriller, involving international conspiracy to possess a technology. The ruthless villain and his aides and the police investigation and the climatic twist of events are all there, as they should be in a Chase novel. And of course, there's the femme fatale. An engaging crime thriller.
