Alex had to leave the mean streets of Chicago in a hurry. Now he’s weathering his first Christmas in a small town in Colorado.
Cory had a boyfriend and now he doesn’t, which means the Christmas holiday is turning out to the the loneliest he’s had in years.
When they meet at a Holiday Fair, Alex finds himself being drawn into Cory’s world. A world where there is grace to be found in a simple, home-cooked meal, books read out loud by firelight, and the golden glow of welcome.
Alex has never wanted anything as tame as hearth and home. Now that he wants it, it’s not anything he can have. Nothing feels he deserves, at any rate.
Can Cory and the Spirit of Christmas Present prove to Alex that love is love?
An m/m romance with cakewalks, blizzards, hurt/comfort, a snow globe, hot chocolate kisses, and Christmas!
Although this book is part of A Snow Globe Christmas series, it is a complete stand alone and it isn’t a requirement that you read the previous books to follow along.
Jackie North has been writing stories since grade school and spent years absorbing the mainstream romances that she found at her local grocery store. She also wanted to put her English degree to good use and write romance novels, because for years she’s had a never-ending movie of made-up love stories in her head that simply wouldn’t leave her alone.
As fate would have it, she discovered m/m romance and decided that men falling in love with other men was exactly what she wanted to write books about.
She creates characters who are a bit flawed and broken, who find themselves on the edge of society, and maybe a few who are a little bit lost, but who all deserve a happily ever after. (And she makes sure they get it!)
She likes long walks on the beach, the smell of lavender and rainstorms, and enjoys sleeping in on snowy mornings. She is especially fond of pizza and beer and, when time allows, long road trips with soda fountain drinks and rock and roll music. In her heart, there is peace to be found everywhere, but since in the real world this isn’t always true, Jackie writes for love.
Yes, my love affair with Jackie North continues. Gah, the warm, snugglies are definitely doing it for me right now. Hurt/comfort, family drama, second chance at life and sweet as can be. Wonderful.
You know, I don’t think sometimes people realize the trouble kids can get into when not surrounded by support and love and such. Heck, even sometimes with good backgrounds, kids get caught up in the wrong crowds. Peer pressure and other circumstances make it that much harder. But the worst is when they try to get out. A lot don’t get out alive, because the life won’t let them leave. It’s sad. So this book has some sad moments. Ones that really broke my heart. But it’s also a story of hope and second chances. Of learning you are worthy of love, no matter your past. And that sometimes love comes in the most unexpected places. Having to run from Chicago in a hurry, Alex has never been more frightened. He’s not a little kid anymore, but the situations he was in and got himself in, caused him to be caught up in something he didn’t want to be. And on the advice of a cop, it might be best for him to leave and quickly. So he ran to his sister and the little town she lived in, hoping to find somewhere to start over and leave his past behind. It was tough going at first, especially when he seemed to clash with the beautiful man named Cory. It seemed everything Alex did was wrong. But when Alex found out Cory had accidentally broken his snow globe, he knew he had to get Cory a new one, from the sad look he always seemed to have by seeing it gone. But going after a new one caused him to be in an accident. And Cory finally seemed to thaw for him. Especially when he found out why Alex was in the accident. And so called enemies, became friends with the hopes of something more. But Alex’s past caught up to him when he was helping someone and Cory got to see it all. And Alex doesn’t want that for Cory for the rest of his life. So now it’s up to Cory…..will he let Alex run from him or will he tell Alex how he feels and see where it leads? I think one thing I hate worse than anything, is when someone is genuinely trying to change and no one will let them. They may not be perfect at starting over, but at least they try. To have people look down their noses at them, like they are lower than dirt. At first, it seemed like that’s what Cory was doing. He judged Alex without finding out the true story of why Alex was having a hard time and such. It broke my heart for Alex, that it took an accident to thaw Cory out quite a bit. I can’t blame Cory completely, though. Cory hasn’t had an easy time of it himself. His ex was a douche. But once Cory finally got to see what Alex was truly about and who he really was, he couldn’t help but like the man. And Alex got to see what it felt like to have someone other than his sister, truly care for him. And it broke my heart again, because it was hard for Alex to accept. For life to be so rough that genuine help and care were hard to accept is so sad. But over time, it got better. That’s what it takes. Time and patience and understanding. Love and acceptance. It’s a beautiful story. I absolutely loved it. I loved the second chances, the hope and the love. It made for a great holiday story and honestly one for all year round.
Loved this story. Friendly small town folks at Christmas are fun and a new life for Alex. I liked this charming tale. Alex, dark hair and green eyes, is in a crappy apartment for now, but he's looking for steady work. He's run from Chicago to be near his sister and start over, with trouble behind him. Cory, a nerdy blonde with blue eyes, bowties, soon to be a professor, is living in the cottage his Aunt left him, taking a break until he gets his P.H.D. He was dumped two years ago, and he's getting into the swing of the Christmas events Harlin, CO has in store.
There are some festive events, including the Holiday Fair and dances. Cory and Alex see each other from across the street and later meet. Each man needs and wants a special person to be with. It's a beautiful tale, heart wrenching and heartwarming, too. Cory is by Alex's side when he needs help, more than once, and Alex gives Cory companionship and hope.
Loved these men, and the pair are very hot and sexy.
The book is interesting, comforting and full of hope and happiness. We get lovely writing by Jackie North, and fabulous characters all around. Highly recommended. ENJOY !
OMG this is so beautiful! With all the Christmas spirit and all! Met in a small town Harlin, Alex never thought that the guy he saw across the street was going to be his happily ever after. After running away from his past, broke and broken, he never thought Cory, proper and everything he's not, was going to date him, not to mention, do anything for him. The day Cory took the wounded Alex to his cozy home after what Alex did to make his sad face bright again, was the day they learned to know each other more. Though Alex didn't understand why Cory wanted to be with him, he couldn't stop his feeling of wanting Cory. Then a cup of hot chocolate, Cory's secret recipe of a really good hot chocolate, became their glue to each other. OMG so adorable. Hot Chocolate Kisses, was Jackie's second Christmas story I red, and it's as wonderful as the first. I really really really loved this story, you should too!
I really enjoyed this small town Christmas story of opposites attracting. Cory is almost an anachronism; with a penchant for bow ties, wool trousers and suspenders, and an aficionado of hot chocolate made from scratch with real chocolate, cream and butter, he doesn’t have much in common with Alex, fresh from Chicago with his leather jacket and trouble at his back. They meet over a snow globe purchase at a holiday fair – the simple lone cottage surrounded by evergreens within the globe represents the hearth and home that Cory has longed for, and has only just come to realize how essential it is to have someone with whom to share it. Alex, for his part, never imagined that home and hearth was something that would ever be in the cards for him, until he meets Cory.
As with other works by Jackie North, this story is beautifully written, and the pleasure in reading it is derived from her prose – descriptions of the small town bustle, the dance at the Grange, the holiday fair, reading by firelight as the blizzard blows outside, real hot chocolate, and the simple honesty expressed in the feelings of yearning and attraction. This is a stop-and-smell-the-Christmas-roses story, and the fragrance is sweet. Highly recommended.
Sweet, slow, gentle, warm, lovely. This was exactly what I needed today. It's not that there's no conflict or angst, it's just...a muted ache instead of a sharp stab of pain. It's not insta-love -- in fact, Cory outright dislikes Alex when they first meet, but that mellows as they each start to take care over the other's spiky edges, smoothing into places to hold close. I loved when Cory rose to Alex's defense, becoming such a strong guard for Alex. And now I'm craving luxurious hot chocolate...
Big city ruffian, Alex, moves to small town in Colorado to restart life as a legal civilized human. He meets Cory a small town academic homebody. They soon fall in love and take turns caring for and protecting each other. I want Cory's hot chocolate recipe.
This story seems to start very slowly as compared with other holiday romance stories. But as you get to really know and understand the characters you understand they way the relationship is building. This is one of those stories that on the surface is two mismatched men but it is wonderful how other people’s jagged edges fit with yours. #CMCon24
I waffled between giving this a 3.5 or 4 star rating because I wasn't sure (and am still not) if this was a solid 4. The MCs are extremely hard to connect to or even like at the beginning, at least they were for me. It took a long time for me to fall in love with them, which is funny because some of my favorite couples are "the bad boy & the nerd/geek" or the "not highly educated & the brain" etc. In other words I love total opposites or unlikely pairings. These two definitely fit that bill yet I struggled to like them as individuals or as a couple but somewhere along the way things suddenly clicked. I ended up reading this in one sitting and completely fell in love with Cory & Alex.
The story may have a rough start and have rough places throughout but it does end up being a heartwarming holiday love story.
TAGS -- Holiday/Christmas -- sweet -- slow burn -- eventually loved the MCs... Cory & Alex -- small town -- opposites attract -- very limited amount of sex -- rough start -- had trouble connecting at first -- read in one sitting -- ended up loving it
A bit slow at the start and it took a while for me to sink into, I wasn't sure about either of the main characters but they are both men who have built walls to protect themselves from the hurt and dangers of the world. By the time they were drinking Cory's special hot chocolate I was totally invested in these two very different men and their relationship and the second half was just adorable. This wasn't a quick read for me. I put it aside several times near the beginning and once I was invested I seemed to read for hours without the counter on my Kindle moving more than a few minutes. But the time invested was worth it in the end. A well written slow burn romance with two MCs that have to work for their happy ending.
Apparently I'm the dissenting opinion on this one because I'd barely give it 3 stars. Cory was a judgmental ass for the first part of the book and I really did not like him. He eventually comes around when Alex goes out of his way to do something really nice for Cory but honestly I couldn't figure out what Alex saw in Cory. Cory is so rude to Alex over and over again and yet Alex still pursues Cory. This made no sense to me and I never felt the connection between the two MC's. The plot was cute and there were some fun Christmas scenes but I couldn't get past my initial dislike of Cory and the lack of chemistry between the two.
This Christmas story had a little more meat on the bones with Alex’s past but there was enough sweetness to balance it. I really liked Alex and Cory, though in the beginning Cory was a little mean when he let his insecurities get to him. Heat on this was a little lower but I enjoyed it all the same.
This had a lot of sweetness, and in the end, I really did Iike both characters... BUT in the beginning, I really didn't see the point of how flat-out bitchy and mean Cory's interactions with Alex were. The first time. sure, there were circumstances and it didn't feel entirely out of place, but ... then the next time they met he was equally nasty for no reason, and it was a little off-putting.
HOWEVER, compared to the eventual sweetness in the whole book, I really did get over it, and ended up with all the sweet "awwwww" heart-eye feelings I want from a holiday romance book, so this is a solid 4☆ read for me, edging toward even higher if not for my weird feelings about Cory's initial bitchiness (and, I suppose, Alex's corresponding lack of reaction to it... it just felt a little off to me).
I read this right after The Christmas Knife, and the stories have a LOT of similarities, but I probably wouldn't have noticed them if I hadn't read them back to back. I mean, the plots have passing similarities, but it's the little details that are repeated that I find . . . fascinating. They are both told in a sort of arms' length 3rd-person 'I'm telling you a Christmas story' sort of way, and feel sort of old-fashioned, despite being set in present day with cell phones. I enjoyed them both, probably liked The Christmas Knife a bit more.
Lots and lots of internal monolog. Which isn’t really my thing. I need a bit more dialog. Which had me skimming parts. I did enjoy the story. Which is what kept me. But all the internal thoughts were a bit too much for me. The writing was great, and the side characters were ok. I’m wondering if all of this authors books are like this or if it’s just this one?
this is one of those halmark-esque holiday romances. and romance is the key word. this was a story of how love can fix a lot. both romantic love and familial love. becasue even though Cory does a lot to heal Alex, Alex's sister is a big part of the story and with out both, this would have been an entirely different story... only one thing that would make this better, the recipe for the hot chocolate, lol.
First impressions are not always correct, especially if you're coming from a place of past hurt and current frustration. Alex and Cory both have their own demons to fight before they can feel the magic of Christmas and a love neither man was expecting.
Cory was interesting right from the start. He had a whole life that wasn't always synonymous with trouble, but grief and being alone spelled out a whole lot of it. I love the idea of a second chance at life when you're really trying to become the best version of yourself. While he sees himself as worth so much less than everyone else he's still trying. Attempting to do it independently is admirable, though a bit unwise as he learns that support and love are more important than pride. His evolution is one of subtle changes as he tries to give another lonely man what might cheer him up and possibly open a path for more between them.
Alex is far less open to the idea of more as his own pride and hurt color his every interaction with Cory until he truly sees the man beneath the "bruiser" appearance. I had a far harder time connecting to Alex because he had an annoying inability to sincerely apologize. He never tried to make amends for his crappy attitude and hurtful words to Cory. Sure, we could see a little flicker of remorse every once in a while, but no action was made to correct his uncharitable behavior. Only when he opened his home to a very hurt Cory did we see that things could get better for him, and them by extension. His icy edges were slowly thawed under the constant warmth of Cory's gigantic heart.
They were a good pair and my frustrations with Alex were overshadowed by how much I enjoyed Cory in all of his vulnerability and seeming flaws. The whole community gave the idea of living in a small town merit, where perhaps everyone knows everyone else's business but they use that information to find ways to love and serve instead of gossip and judge. I loved the warmth of the setting and the essence of what the holiday spirit really is as it was apparent in so much of we saw and experienced in this story.
Jackie North has written a truly charming Christmas story about two lost souls who find each other when they least expect it. The first meeting between Alex and Cory didn’t bode well. Both are grumpy and not blessed with the Christmas spirit. Alex left his bad past in Chicago behind and tries to begin anew in the small town his sister lives in. Cory is getting to get his life back together after being a bad breakup. Right from the start, it was a captivating story that gave me all the feels I associate with Christmas: warmth, love, and fun. Cory and Alex, although being opposites, have that magical connection that you can’t describe but feel all the same. They bring out the best in each other, caring for each other, albeit reluctantly at times, born out of doubt and insecurity, and they go all out without wanting anything in return. Appearances can be deceiving because under his gruff exterior and sometimes rudish manners, Alex has a warm and giving heart. And Cory might come across as a proper and bookish type, but he has a will of steel and doesn’t take no for an answer, and he goes the extra mile for Alex. Alex’s sister, Angela, and her husband, Richard, are great people, who help and accept both men without questions asked. So place a couple of pillows on the floor in front of the fireplace, make yourself a cup of hot chocolate, and enjoy this heartwarming Christmas story.
Alex is trying to start fresh but it's a big adjustment for him and he literally bumps his way into Cory's life. BTW, Cory's ex is a jerk and I'm glad he's rid of him; however, he's a bit prickly. In fact, they both have a touch of the Grinch in their own way, which made for some excellent friction and made it all the sweeter watching them fall for each other. They connect on a strong level, balance each other's personalities, and soften their rough edges. As an aside, I bet Cory's hot chocolate is fantastic and we must be kindred spirits as I also love ice cream on cold days. Plus, I loved the Airplane nod.
“You’re like the hot meal I didn’t know I was hungry for, till I met you.” I'm not ashamed to admit that they both pulled at my heartstrings, especially with the snow globe and Alex's troubles. I think he needs a lot of Cory cuddles. Speaking of, I adored how protective Cory can be, how he took care of Alex, who is very stubborn, and how he never gave up on him. Both Cory and Alex may have thought the punch was sweet but it has nothing on them, this town, and the wonderful people that live in it. It makes me wish I could visit during the holidays. A sweet and lovely story about finding your way and learning to live and love again.
Two needy lonesome souls who find compassion, companionship, and a lovely connection at Christmas time; all caused by a snow globe. Alex had fled Chicago and his gangland ties to save his life. He was a petty thief on the periphery but one mistake makes him a target. Accepting his sister's invite to come to Harlin, CO is the beginning of the rest of his life. Of course his attraction to the mysterious buttoned- down, uptight man he sees in Cory just mystifies him. Cory is tied up his world of English Lit and can't see the forest for the trees. At least that's what his ex Brandon said; that he was afraid of leaving his comfort zone. Cory was proud but had a tender heart, had desires and dreams just like any other person. What really broke the camel's back was Brandon saying Cory was fearful of success and reluctant to go after what he wanted and that English Lit was a waste of time. A leisurely stroll through Harlin's Christmas bizarre, a fanciful snow globe, a secret hot chocolate recipe offered to comfort and the stage is set for a marvelous Christmas story. For my honest review I was given an ARC of this story.
Alex: Alex is closed off coming to live in a small town is worlds away from his life on the streets of Chicago. He wants to start again to have a better life but is dragging the chains of his past with him. Will the nudging of the holiday season and a sweet gentle man help him drop the chains?
Cory: Even though things are not going as Cory had imagined because of a recent breakup he is resigned to spend the holiday alone but he still plans to enjoy it. He is a sweet caring person but more closed off than even he knows. Alex is not at all Cory’s type but there are little things that break through Alex’s tough exterior that give him a glimpse of what is underneath.
All it takes is some horrible hot chocolate and both men to give the other a chance to let a little of the Christmas magic bring them the wonderful gift of love. The question is will they let themselves accept the gift!
This is a sweet delightful holiday story. A enjoyed it and got swept away.
Cory was dumped by his boyfriend, who essentially told him he was boring. Alex had to leave Chicago suddenly and was struggling to find his place in the small town where his sister lives. When he and Cory run into each other, sparks fly but not the good kind. But they slowly start to become friendly while keeping their attraction under wraps. It was sweet to see Cory caring for Alex after his accident. I liked these guys together. Cory was the bookish type guy that I love. Alex was a little rough around the edges but he could be really sweet and was a good guy. I liked that their relationship progressed slowly, and even though things did speed up quite a bit at the end, I was left feeling hopeful that they'll have a long happy life together.
A nicely written festive offering from Ms North. Both Alex and Cory are lonely, and feeling a little lost during a time that should be merry and bright.
As the two interacted, the story became so much more than a festive story. It's all about relationships, and about whether you should just settle, or if there can be more to life. The story is also about the importance of family and having a bit of confidence in yourself. I absolutely loved how Alex's family supported both MCs fully, and only wanted them to be happy.
Single All The Way is a really enjoyable, heart warming story set to a festive background that was a joy to read. Only gripe is that I would've liked to have had more background information on both Cory and Alex.
This book in the Snow Globe series was sweet and adorable. Jackie takes a dapper small town man and connects him with an on the run hoodlum from Chicago.
At the beginning there is a lot of miscommunication but as Cory learns of Alex’s quirks, the love burns slow and hot. Cory manipulates Alex into relaxing his guard and therefore is able to find the kind sweet man beneath the gruff exterior. Where Alex’s joy in the simple things expands Cory’s wings and his joy in all things holiday. This book is a perfect with a mug of hot chocolate and a stormy night. The scenes she describes can be transmuted to anyone’s home and it’s sweet. her way of writing is homey and awesome. It’s a big warm hug.
Whilst I did enjoy this story, I found the characters a little hard to connect too. Cory was fairly rude and standoffish at the start, and even though this changes when Alex does something really caring and thoughtful for him, I had trouble really feeling their connection. I loved the hot chocolate in the story though and how Cory's recipe became something special they shared. It was extremely cute, especially with the snow scenery surrounding them - the Christmas spirit was definitely high! The ending was quite nice as well, and it was great seeing how devoted and protective Cory was when there was a bit of a misunderstanding because of Alex's troubled past. It is well worth a read to get in the Christmas spirit.
So so very good, what a wonderful addition to the Snow Globe Christmas series and an enjoyable sweet treat to warm your heart on a cold winters day. For Cory having gone through a horrible break up has made it hard to get into the holiday spirit, so it's a good thing the town has an array of festivities to be part take of. Alex needed to get out of Chicago and decided moving to small town Colorado where his sister and her boyfriend lives is just the right place to be. After bumping into each other at the holiday activities they are starting to realize that maybe they might have a lot more in common then either one of them thought, a date, a dance, a kiss and maybe a start to something wonderful.
I think the description of this book is a little misleading. This is really A Christmas Carol, as a love story, sort of. Alex is a young Scrooge, without the economic advantages. He's had a wake-up call before the beginning of the book that his life is on the wrong track.
Cory is lonely. He knows people in town, but doesn't have any good friends or family. He's just home after getting his BA. He was raised solidly upper middle class and doesn't think much about Alex when he meets him.
The story is really about Alex figuring out what he wants and deciding to go for it, even if he doesn't feel like he deserves it.
Sweet slow-burn opposites attract story-line with some lovely special twists. I enjoyed how different these MC's were and how they went from misunderstanding based upon assumptions to friendship and finally to finding love. The writing was good and the story-line moved nicely.
Alex and Cory's journey allow them to find each other when they had no idea that is what they needed. Sometimes we search for things we don't need and miss the most important things in life.
This is book nine in the Snow Globe Christmas series and can be read as a stand-alone story.
I was gifted this book from the LesCourt Author Services and i freely give my honest opinion and review.
