John is an international, multi-award-winning author of Western Fiction. He is also a screenwriter and actor, recently appearing in 1883 A Yellowstone Origin Story and the film A Dark Destiny. His passion for history and the classic western genre inspired him to write short stories and three novels about the Old West along with his first feature film screenplay adapted from his second novel, Red River Reunion. All are classic westerns set in 1870s Texas.
A great book to escape for a few hours. If you grew up reading or watching westerns, then this is the book for you. If not, welcome to a genre that will give you hours of pleasure and fun. John Layne has crafted a riveting story of the wild west every reader will enjoy.
Although this is a straightforward story of good versus evil, it is not a simple tale. The author has pulled together the classic elements from your traditional westerns and added a few twists. He doesn’t make the story so convoluted that it is difficult to follow, but he does heighten the mystery by adding a few hidden elements which keep the reader guessing. These keep the reader engaged in the story line.
His attention to detail helps the reader become part of the story and captures the reality of life in the 1870’s. The elements of risk are not sugar coated but are not so over drawn as to overwhelm the narrative. They add flavor to the story line and help the reader understand what is happening around the main characters. Life was cruel and hard. This comes across in every scene.
If you are looking for a few hours of relief from the tedium and stress of everyday life, you’ve found your respite. Enjoy.
