Invention: Break Free from the Culture Hell-Bent on Holding You Back

Rate this book
The universe’s Inventor designed us like he did the world: with passion and precision and purpose. He made us for confidence and significance, joy and relationship. He made us to be part of something massive and majestic—to contribute to his work of remaking this world and to play vital parts in his Kingdom. But we have a vicious enemy, hell-bent on thwarting us. Our enemy spins lies that convince us into distraction and dependence—on alcohol, drugs, pornography, success-at-all-cost.

But Jesus said, “I came so they can have real and eternal life, more and better life than they ever dreamed of.” (MSG, John 10:10) He said that about us.

Invention is an invitation to join a band of renegades and revolutionaries, change-makers and troublemakers—men who won’t be daunted, because they know there is more. It’s a guide for living, finally, with depth and purpose. It will expose the lies that obscure God’s intent, and will help reveal His design for your life.

There is so much more. Come and see.

Wow ... there is so much in this short book. So much to contemplate but also to do! And that's what lifts this book above the majority that explore the concept of identity and purpose: Camp guides the reader through a practical Spirit-led self-evaluation to map out a blueprint for life. A blueprint that documents your talents, spiritual gifts, sense of calling and potential actions to take. Really useful for men at any stage of life but especially if you have a sense there is more to life and that you're not fulfilling the Lord's purpose.

This is an easy-to-read book with each chapter featuring what Camp calls a "nano-history" - a brief profile of an inventor who lived and worked during the Industrial Revolution. I enjoyed learning more about such people as Otis, Benz, Edison and more. Recognising that Camp had taken some creative licence to illustrate a point, these openings certainly piqued my curiosity in the topic under consideration.

I love that notion that we're God's most fantastic invention - "His beloved creations ... and can't-miss-this intentionality - for us and for our lives." And He so wants us to understand our unique identity and the purpose we have to play in His Kingdom. For too many years I've lived not being sure of my identity and purpose and so I've meandered, allowed myself to be too distracted by all and sundry and not been the husband, father and friend that I should be.

Do you feel that way too? If so, grab this book. It's filled with relevant Scripture and quotes from other valuable sources as Camp demonstrates how we can start the journey to discover our God-given identities through drawing closer to the Lord and together evaluating and documenting a plan to start living it.

I'm looking forward to working through it again and sharing it with other men who I know will find it beneficial.

I was provided with a PDF copy of this book by the publisher with no expectation of a positive review.

I was given an advanced copy of this book as part of a 'Launch Team'. I was asked to give an honest review.

This is an excellent book for a men's ministry. There is inside each man an inventor wanting to do something great. How do we know what it is that we are to do. We need to train ourselves to listen to the God who created us in the first place. Only through him can we learn what it is that we were invented for so that we can learn what we need to invent. It may not be a physical invention, it may be a need that you meet for others, and in fact it will often be.

The book has 8 chapters to it. The first one is an autobiographical look of the author. What he went through to be a success in his chosen field, and how he still felt that he needed to turn to the one who invented him to find true success. Chapters 2 through 8 look at one inventor, what they had to go through, to overcome, to make it through to create the invention that they had been successful with.

From Edison and seeing that he was not self made, to Bell, who wanted to help his deaf mother hear, Marconi, who had to figure out a way for the noise of the telegraph signals to be overcome, the Wright brothers having to overcome the feeling of not being able to accomplish something, and others. Each chapter brings us their story and how the author feels that we can use this in our lives. And then, we are guided in looking at each story with questions to make us think about why and how these are to influence our lives. The questions are designed to lead us deeper and understand things.

There are also some appendices that some of the chapters refer to. These take us deeper into what we are supposed to see in ourselves, what God is calling us to do and to get us launched out into doing it. These exercises are important.

As noted, the book could be used for men's group but also could be used in it's own as one man trying to find out his call in life.

Really a joy to read. I love the real-life concept into action stories focused on past inventors. But to get the full impact of the book, be sure to give yourself plenty of time to contemplate and answer the questions after each chapter.

This is an interesting take on leadership and gifting. I really like the idea of using different inventors but sometimes the link to the encouragement and challenge was not the most succinct. However it was a good book and some really great exercises that also bridge the commercial leadership world as well.

Great book that I recommend you read one chapter a day. Book ties in great inventors and inventions and how we as Christian men are not only wired but how we should live. Each chapter had some reflections for you. The appendix is worth it. I thought Justin's example of a funnel was outstanding. Have to read to see the reference.

Easy read yet challenging at times. Justin combines great Christian thinkers with good scriptural backing. Book is not preachy. Found it very encouraging.

Gifts & Callings

Discovering what's holding you back is key. To find your natural gifts and spiritual gifts and using them to put others first will bring you peace. It will put you were God can use you. It will open your eyes to see if an opportunity is for you or not. We're all to do good, but we can't do every good thing. What a great book.

LEARNING & GROWS

Thus book teaches patience. To develop and tap into God's infinite power. To have structure , and to stay on the straight and narrow way .
Thank you Justin and God bless you.

Loved the way the message was connected to the great inventions of recent time. It came at a perfect time for me as I examine my calling. The exercises were practical and helpful. I can see using this as a guide in men’s ministry.

I thought I would enjoy it more than I did. It is definitely a study. I guess I was not wanting or expecting such a study. Loved the stories about the inventors.
