I had high hopes from this book considering the author's history but this is a pretty general book. There aren't any anecdotes from author's life. Instead we get the same Steve Jobs, Warren Buffet, Julia Child stories.
The book wasn't bad. It just didn't meet my high expectations. No matter how many times I remind myself that expectations aren't conducive to a healthy lifestyle....
The author talks about many things in his book but two stood out to me - one, we should be aware of the potential obstacles before we start a task rather than be surprised by them while doing the task and second, overcoming obstacles is 90% mental and 10% other. I wanted to find more techniques on overcoming obstacles but was again disappointed on that corner.
Overall a good read and a short one.
I received a free copy of the book from Netgalley.
I did enjoy reading it. It was short which was a little disappointing but it kept my attention and it did help me realize where I needed to start looking to overcome my obstacle. When you think about it it's very obvious, it makes sense and it should have been easy to see in the first place but if you had you wouldn't need the book, common sense in hindsight. Don Mann uses a lot of examples he points out the similarities in what other famous people have done to what SEALs do when they have a mission. From the guys who started Nike to the guys who were the first to make it to the summit of Everest, Elon Musk and his car factory, and the SEAL Team that took out Bin Laden. Mann uses these to help point out and remind us what we need to do, a lot of it is self actualizing.
Enjoyable read that explores the successful mindset of SEALS, but also, gives several stories of successful business personalities and athletes. They all may be successful now, but they all faced their own obstacles along the way.
I think this book is very insightful about a breadth of many topics. Pretty surface-level stuff, but a keen understanding of the topics covered throughout this book can springboard your learning on more advanced topics later. Highly recommended.
I quite enjoyed the history of the resilience of the Navy Seals community what they have to endure through their training it is a brave hard job they do not for the weak.
Overcoming Obstacles was a good self help book, but fell a bit flat for me. I was expecting more about the author and his life considering he was a Navy Seal. Well written and still interesting.
