World War II: A Compact History

Rate this book
A veteran of World War II himself, experienced historian Colonel Dupuy is expertly placed to write this revealing and fascinating account of the war. Compressing the enormity of the Second World War into a compact narrative sweeping the world, Dupuy explores everything from life in England under the Blitz to General Joseph Stilwell’s 400-mile trek through Burma, as well as Stalingrad and Guadalcanal and the war in the Pacific. Uncovering new and shocking information, he presents the most detailed examination to date of Operation Bodyguard – the plan designed to delude the Germans about the Allied invasion of the Continent – and explores the devastating impact of the Battle of the Bulge on American morale. Investigating Churchill and Truman's decision to allow Stalin to decide when the Italian and German surrenders would be revealed, he also delves into lesser-known and bravely fought campaigns that altered the outcome of the War – and the world as we know it. Praise for R. Ernest “It is a comprehensive treatment of its subject, covering the good leadership as well as the bad. It is well worth reading for military and civilian alike. Besides this, it is entertaining reading” - General Gavin “Superb... enthralling... highly recommended” - Library Journal “Concise, well-written... a wide selection of paintings and photographs and excellent maps... aid in understanding the complexities of strategy and following the action” - The New York Times Colonel R. Ernest Dupuy (1887- 1976) was a newspaperman as well as a National Guardsman as a young man. He saw action in both World Wars. Twenty-five years later, as acting director of the SHAEF public relations division, it was his voice that announced the Normandy landings. After his retirement in 1947, he specialized in writing military history, and authored many books on the U.S. Army, West Point, and military affairs.

Great read!

Accurate, interesting, and succinct history of WWII, including major actions in all theaters. The author carefully outlines the important strategic decisions, and illustrates with inciteful discussions of well chosen tactical examples. All in all a great way to either learn or review the major points and events of this amazingly vast conflict.

Wow! I know it's called a 'World War' for a reason, but I literally had no idea just how much of the world was actually involved. There was a lot of names and information crammed into this average sized book, and I sometimes had trouble keeping track of where everyone was and what they were doing at certain stages throughout the war, but it was very informative and I've learned a lot from it.

Very basic outline of WWII

Insightful in some areas. More of a way to introduce you to WWII, then you pick the area you would like to read more on.
