the way we believe being in love should be all-consuming and burning hot and hard and painful, despite living with the apparently boring and comforting reality of love and affection.
i bought this because i stupidly thought the main characters were going to be two girls (the same author has written a lesbian love story before) and i struggle distinguishing male and female japanese names — the cover was so pretty so i didn’t look much into the plot and bought it impulsively, and ended up reading something very different from what i expected.
i’m not mad about it at all. though objectively frustrating, miho’s thoughts and decisions feel completely justified in my eyes. it’s not the right thing but it feels like the right thing in that moment. doing stupid things for stupid people because they make us feel high and important just for a brief moment in time.

Miho and Sei are living together, but there's no passion to their relationship, which is strained by the fact that Sei is a struggling musician who mainly sits around all day drinking and watching TV instead of looking for a job. Meanwhile Miho turns to sex work to support them and is pining for her old boyfriend who was a complete asshole.
I liked this a lot. It's understated and very realistic and feels very grown up. I love the art, too. It's all outlines with minimal use of ink and tones.
I wish it were easier to get my hands on this sort of manga, but the bookstores here don't tend to stock a lot of ladies manga and most of what they do stock is BL of some sort. Ladies also gets scanned much less frequently than seinen, shounen, or shoujo, so it's hard to find online, too.

The characters were a bit frustrating - not very communicative, or communicative only in roundabout ways - but the conclusion resonated with me. The appreciation of the seemingly mundane is a theme in the book, and depending on the stage of your own life and relationships, this book may resonate with you. The drawings are swift -- not usually the type of comic book I'd buy -- but nonetheless you can see the cityscape and neighborhoods of Japan, and there's a joy in seeing that backdrop of a foreign country.
The title in Japanese is Kabocha to Mayonnaise, which translates to Kabocha squash with Mayonnaise.

Saved by the last chapter, otherwise I would've given it a 2/5.
