Mira Desai is excited, it’s her first day at Unicorn School, the school her older sister Rani attends and she can’t wait to meet her Unicorn partner.
To travel to the school they have to go through a portal, but her sister isn’t very supportive so it’s left to a new student, Raheem, and his dad to teach Mira how to enter and travel to the school. Once there each of the new pupils is allocated their own unicorn, one that has magically been chosen for them.
Mira watches as her new classmates receive their unicorn partners. Raheem gets Brave, Darcy receives Star and Jake’s new friend is called Pegasus. Soon it is Mira’s turn when her unicorn partner is revealed she is less than impressed – He’s overweight, grumpy, lazy, and a little naughty. He’s also called Dave.
Join Mira and Dave as they have two days to complete the initial unicorn training so they can go on their first quest. There’s just one issue, misbehave and you are given ‘havoc’ points, get three and you will not be allowed to attend the first quest. Can Mira keep Dave out of trouble long enough so that she doesn’t miss out on something she has been waiting years to do?
The Naughtiest Unicorn is a fun middle-grade book filled with excitement and laugh-out-loud moments. Mira is a sweet young girl who has been desperate to attend the Unicorn School ever since her older sister started there a few years ago, who just happens to keep going on about all the fun she has. She was desperate to receive a unicorn princess, so her partner Dave was a bit of a disappointment for her.
Throughout you get to witness Mira trying desperately to help Dave be a good unicorn. Rather than let her sadness at not getting a unicorn like her friends stand in her way, she is determined to make Dave the best unicorn – Unfortunately, Dave isn’t really that bothered.
The book is certainly inclusive with a diverse cast of characters. There are some really touching moments of friendship throughout too. This is the first book in what I can see becoming a popular children’s series, and rightly so, the story was beautifully written, the black and white illustrations throughout are brilliant, and the plot was certainly enjoyable from beginning to end.

A sweet, funny book about a girl who goes to unicorn school and finds that it's not what she was expecting - but it's still a lot of fun. A really charming beginning to a series for young readers. (6+)

Its impossible not to love Dave the naughtiest Unicorn.
This is a lovely fun book .

Odotukset oli niiiiin nollilla kun päätin, että luen edes osan tätä kirjaa. Ja sitten luinkin koko kirjan ja jopa hymyilytti tämä vähemmän uljas, ylipainoinen yksisarvinen Teppo. Ehkä vähän korvaukseksi ennakkoluuloista neljä tähteä, mutta kakkoset lukee tätä varmaan ihan mielellään. Varmaan olisi aika kiva myös eskareille ääneen luettavaksi.

De eenhoorn is wel echt eigenwijs, maar ook soms wel een klein beetje lief als Mira verdrietig is. Gelukkig kregen ze door Jack wel een medaille. De juffen waren ook echt wel een beetje streng en er waren strenge regels. Ik vond het spannend en het is echt waar ik van hou. Mira was wel heel verdrietig dat ze niet mee kon doen, dat vond ik wel zielig. Het lijkt Ellis ook wel een leuk boek.

Mukavan helppo ja hauska yksisarvistarina, joka menee varmasti vinkkauksissa kuumille kiville. Itselle turhan geneerinen Teppo-parka ei nyt ihan niin kolahtanut.

Een meisje mag naar een eenhoornschool en denkt dat dit vooral glitter en lol is, maar ze komt er achter dat het toch niet zo makkelijk is.
Ik had deze in het Engels voorbij zien komen op Twitter en toen zag ik hem uiteindelijk eens in het Nederlands in de bieb. Hij moest natuurlijk meteen mee want hij klonk enorm leuk. Maar ja, na het lezen kan ik alleen maar zeggen meh. Het klonk leuk... maar uiteindelijk was ik voornamelijk gefrustreerd en teleurgesteld.
Wat ging er mis voor mij?:
*Het deed me net iets teveel denken aan De Magische Eenhoorn Academie van Julie Sykes (kinderen mogen naar een magische school, krijgen een eenhoorn, moeten een band er mee krijgen, eenhoorn krijgt superkrachten (nog niet in deze maar de kinderen zijn wel aan het praten erover dat ze misschien zoiets krijgen), er gebeurt iets spannends en onze MC MOET helpen want zij is DE ENIGE die dit kan en ze moet dat samen met haar eenhoorn doen dus +1 op relatie).
*Waarom zijn die leraren zo streng? Die kinderen kunnen het toch niet helpen als ze de eerste uren, of zelfs dagen foutjes maken? Waarom worden meteen punten afgetrokken? Lekker hoor, ben je net nieuw en dan wordt je al afgestraft terwijl je niet eens weet hoe je eenhoorn werkt en de relatie nog helemaal nieuw is. Ik kan me voorstellen als die kinderen dan al een weekje of 2 er zijn dat je dan toch wel de basics moet weten, maar de eerste dag? Wat is er mis met die leraren? Vinden ze het zo leuk om lekker kindjes te straffen?
*Als er maar 1 dag op aarde voorbijgaat voor een schooljaar... moeten die kinderen dan 364 dagen weer wachten en naar een andere school gaan om door de dagen te komen?
*Waarom is Jack zo'n *insert wat niet zo lieve woordjes*. Gelukkig doet hij nog iets goeds aan het einde, maar voor de rest wilde ik hem gewoon achterlaten ver weg.
*Hetzelfde voor de zus. Wat is dat voor kreng zeg. Lacht haar zusje uit, maakt leugens op waardoor Mira in een vuilnisbak plaatsneemt, en sorry, waarom doet die moeder niet wat meer hier tegen want ik kan me niet voorstellen dat deze twee zussen lief samengaan thuis.
*Waarom is Dirk ook anders in zijn uiterlijk? Alle eenhoorns lijken op eenhoorns... maar Dirk niet.
*Waarom is Dirk zo strontvervelend? Snapt ie niet dat hij Mira pijn doet met wat hij doet? Hij maakt het op tijden nog wel goed hoor, en dat is fijn, maar verder vond ik hem maar erg gemeen. Hij moet toch ook snappen dat het allemaal nieuw is voor Mira en samen met haar dingen uitvinden en een goede vriendschap krijgen?
*Waarom is Dave > Dirk geworden in het Nederlands? Dave kan gewoon hoor, ik ken er zelfs een paar. Als Mira > Mira kan blijven zie ik niet in waarom Dave moet worden veranderd.
Wat werkte wel:
*Mira was een best lieve meid en ik vond vooral haar enthousiasme heerlijk!
*De illustraties waren erg leuk gedaan en ik moest vaak lachen wat er gebeurde op ze. De illustrator heeft echt een leuke stijl.
*De cover is enorm schattig en ik vind het leuk dat hij shiny is en kleurrijk is.
1.5 sterren omdat ik dus Mira leuk vond en de illustraties. Ik ga de serie niet verder lezen.

Loistavaa! Stereotypiat hiiteen, ei kaikki yksisarviset kimalla! Teppo on laiska eikä yhtään säihkyvä, lisäksi piereskelee ja pyöräyttelee pökäleitä tasaiseen tahtiin. :D Pierukakkahuumoria tytöille! Hauska ja kiva kirja yksisarviskoulusta, taidan mä lukea seuraavankin osan kunhan tulee. :D

A great kids book, I loved Dave the unicorn , this is a great entertaining read for children for those obsessed with unicorns and hide not, it’s a great story about friendship and the different forms it comes in. Wonderful read for kids

I thoroughly enjoyed this humorous tale about Mira's experiences starting unicorn school and can't wait to read more about her adventures with Dave her new unicorn best friend!! A great introduction to chapter books for younger readers (7-10) this story incorporates lots of familiar tropes - dealing with competitive classmates, overcoming your fears, developing new friendships, starting a new school etc - while remaining totally unique and laugh out loud funny. It is sure to be a firm favourite among my students... heck I wish I could meet the lazy, always hungry /tired, often farting/pooping Dave myself! 😅

September 11, 2020This was funny! It was full of glitter, unicorns, rainbows, magic portals, donuts...what’s not to love? I was a little surprised that the unicorns don’t talk--for some reason I assumed that based on the cover. I also thought it was unfair that Mira kept getting in trouble for Dave’s actions. But Dave was endearing enough that I didn’t mind his misbehavior too much! Definitely give this to unicorn fans, but keep in mind there is a lot of poop humor--not a good choice if adults have concerns about content like that.

Fun and unexpected! Funexpected? Loved the twist on what unicorn Mira got! Even though I saw the cover and should have known 😂 Dave seems to have his sweet moments at least (unlike Mira's sister! Mean prank to pull...)

My 4 year old absolutely loved Dave the Unicorn - his antics really made her chuckle and she’s now asked for the series! She loves the illustrations, but is especially obsessed with the jokes and quiz at the end. Brilliant fun!

Aika jännitteetöntä, lasta lukijana aliarvioivaa, hohhoijaa... Mira on pääosassa oleva tyttö, joka pääsee vihdoin Yksisarviskouluun (jihuu!). Siellä kaikki on aivan fantastista ja glitterillä kuorrutettua. Paitsi että Mira saa yksisarvisekseen aikamoisen rontin, pienen ja huonokäytöksisen Tepon. Teppo sitten pierii ja röyhtäilee, eikä hänellä voi ratsastaa, mutta kirjan lopussa Teppo yllättää pelastamalla pulasta porukkaa. Pieruhuumori ei muuten naurattanut tässä kirjassa, vaikka ymmärränkin, että normaalisti hevoset pierivät aika usein ja äänekkäästi, ja sitä piti pitää esillä. Lisäksi oli kakkahuumoria, ja sekin oli tylsää. Kirjan juoni on irrallinen mistään tekijöistä, siksi se ei oikein kiinnostanut. Tapahtumat olivat sattumanvaraisia. Yksisarviskoulun tulkitsen jonkinlaiseksi keskiluokkaisuuden kuplaksi. Lapset on tuotu ympäristöön, jossa leikitään ja performoidaan jotakin yhdentekevää tosielämän kannalta. Lapsihahmojen motiivit ja päämäärät olivat tässä kirjassa päälle liimattuja ja irrationaalisia. Plussaa annan positiivisesta tunnelmasta, lievistä jännityksen hetkistä alkusivuilla, kun yksisarvisten nimiä paljastettiin, ja ruskeista hahmoista normaliteettina.

Dave was an hilarious version of a unicorn for once to see their beautiful stereotype broken this was a fresh take on life with a pet unicorn!

Mira Desai on haaveillut koko pienen ikänsä Yksisarviskouluun pääsystä. Koulu on avoinna vain harvoille ja valituille, mutta koska Miran äiti ja isosiskokin ovat päässeet sinne, niin Mirankin on aivan pakko päästä. Ja viimein hänen toiveensa toteutuu; eräänä kevätaamuna hänen sängyllään odottaa kimalteleva kirjekuori, joka sisältää kutsun Yksisarviskouluun. Vihdoinkin Mira pääsisi mukaan taikalaukkoihin, kilpailuihin ja kaikkeen muuhun hauskaan, mistä hänen siskonsa on kertonut.
Yksisarviskoulu on juuri niin lumoava paikka kuin mitä Mira on kuvitellutkin. Ja pian hän saisi tavata oman yksisarvisystävänsä. Voi kunpa se olisi kuin Diana Välkeharja! Mutta kun tulee Miran vuoro kohdata oma yksisarvinen, sitä ei näykään missään. Hetken kuluttua opettajat raahaavat sisään Tepon, pienimmän ja pulleimman, pömppömahaisen ja takkuharjaisen yksisarvisen, jonka Mira on milloinkan nähnyt. Eikä tuota otusta näytä vähääkään kiinnostavan koulunkäynti saatika ystävyys Miran kanssa. Meneekö Miran kesä yksisarviskoulussa täysin penkin alle Tepon vuoksi?
Ainakin meikäläiseen tämä heppakirjojen ja Harry Potterin parodiayhdistelmä upposi kuin veitsi kuumaan voihin, ja hihittelinkin vähän väliä Miran ja Tepon kommelluksille. Ilmeikäs kuvitus, mukavan suuri fontti ja harva riviväli takaavat, että heikompikin lukija jaksaa kahlata tämän loppuun asti. Takuuvarma lisä kolmos- ja nelosluokkalaisten kirjapakettiin!

Just like her mom and older sister, Mira will meet her unicorn best friend, go on magical quests, ride on her unicorn, and have a wonderful, magic-filled summer. All of her new classmates get paired with majestic, prancing unicorns with shimmering coats. Except Mira. Mira gets assigned to Dave.
Dave is the opposite of a majestic unicorn. He is physically small, so when Mira sits on him, her knees are by her chin. He absolutely loves donuts. He also loves to nap...a lot. All the time actually. Including in their classes. Even his poop isn't dainty and glitter-filled like other unicorns--it looks like a pile of dog poop. And Dave poops (and farts) a lot. Dave keeps getting Mira in trouble, and soon they are both banned from the upcoming magical quest. Can Mira figure out why she and Dave are destined to be best friends? Or should she keep dreaming about a new unicorn?
Dave the Unicorn is a funny, lighthearted series that will appeal to kids who like the humor of Diary of a Wimpy Kid but might not be ready for middle school drama (or kids who are looking for a more text-heavy Dog Man readalike). When you think about the magical unicorn universe too much you are left with a lot of questions and some plot holes, but this series will be well loved by its intended audience.

I won this book from a Goodreads giveaway.
This is a cute, Easy Chapter book that I think any child could enjoy. There is equal time given to both girl and boy characters, though the main character is a girl. The girls in the book are brave and one boy is timid while the other boy is a slight bully.
The author makes her world seem fun, though the book is short enough that there is plenty of development available in future books. There are lots of illustrations that help the reader picture the scenery.
My only issue (which is sort of a non issue, because I’m not bothered by it, but others might be) is that Dave the Unicorn apparently farts a lot, has big poops, and even threw up everything in his stomach. I think this is the author’s way of showing the reader that he isn’t a perfect specimen, but that he has his positive points within the story too.
I like that the author included a little Unicorn BFF quiz and Unicorn jokes at the end of the book, as well as a sneak peek of book 2.
I have 6 & 8 year old nieces that I will be passing this book onto. I think they will enjoy it.

Kuuntelin tämän äänikirjana ja tästä syystä minusta tuntui, että jotain pientä jäi tästä lukukokemuksesta puuttumaan, nimittäin kuvitus. Toivon, että kuvitus on tässä kirjassa upea. Ainakin kirjan kansi on nimittäin todella herkullinen, värikylläinen hattararäjähdys! Tarinassa ei ollut ihan hirveän paljon seikkailua ja vaarallisia tilanteita, mutta pieru- ja kakkahuumoria sitten senkin edestä ja luulen, että nuoret lukijat innostuvat siitä varmasti.
Ja voi, tuo vähemmän kimalteleva yksisarvinen Teppo, miten riemastuttava hahmo kaikkien niiden yltiöihkujen yksisarvisten joukossa. Luulen, että juuri tämä yksisarvinen valikoitui Miralle syystä. Miralla tuntuu olevan tarpeeksi peräänantamattomuutta Tepon kanssa toimimiseen.

I can see kids who are into unicorns enjoying this story. Definitely feels very Harry Potter aligned, so if they know anything about Harry Potter, they might make some connections. (And hopefully enjoy them as opposed to being annoyed by the parallels.) I like the clear attempt at inclusion across race/ethnicity as well as having a main character who uses a wheelchair (and is specific enough to address that there is a special harness that helps her get from her chair onto her unicorn- and even moreso that a peer wishes he could use it too.)

Sara on odottanut pääsyä Yksisarviskouluun koko elämänsä ajan, varsinkin kun isosisko käy sitä jo ja on voittanut kasan palkintoja oman yksisarvisensa kanssa. Kun Sara viimein pääsee Yksisarviskouluun, hän haaveilee vain yhdestä asiasta: omasta yksisarvikaverista, jonka kanssa hän aikoo tulla parhaaksi ystäväksi ja voittaa ison kasan palkintoja. Kaikki näyttää kuitenkin tuhoon tuomitulta jo alussa: Sara saa yksisarvisparikseen Tepon, pienen, pulskan ja ennenkaikkea laiskan yksisarvisen, jota ei tunnu Saran seura juurikaan kiinnostavan. Miten Sara saa Teposta itselleen kaverin ja voiko hän voittaa tämän kanssa yhtäkään palkintoa?
Ihan ok teos, kuvitus oli hyvä lisä ja tarina nopeasti luettava. Kuitenkin ehkä hieman höttöisen oloinen, vaikka Tepossa olikin särmää. 3 tähteä.

This is my 6 year old daughter's favourite series of books that she has ever read! I started by reading this to her but she is now a free reader and re reads it constantly. This is the first book in the series. A lovely funny story about a girl called Mira who starts unicorn school and is paired with Dave, unicorn best friend forever (her UBFF). He wasn't what she was expecting as he is a little plump, likes eating doughnuts and sleeps all day! Mira loves him though and together with her friends they start lots of school adventures. I would highly recommend this series for children just finishing reading schemes and starting to read chapter books independently.

Unicorn lovers are going to enjoy this series.
Mira has been looking forward to Unicorn School were she will finally receive her own unicorn. However, the unicorn she receives, Dave, isn't the unicorn she expected. Dave causes trouble for Mira and when they are left behind for the class trip she is very upset. When Dave and Mira realize their classmates are in trouble they do all they can to help. Will Dave and Mira finally become the team they should? Will they find a true friendship? Read this fun book and you'll be wanting to read more from these two fun book characters.

Miran perheestä äiti (varmaan jotain tuhat vuotta sitten) ja sisko ovat menneet yksisarviskouluun ja hän odottaa omaa kutsuaan malttamattomana. Kun Mira lopulta saa tietää, että hänkin pääsee kulkemaan taikaportista tuonne toiseen maailmaan, jossa aika kulkee eri tahtia, hän ei malta odottaa tapaamista oman yksisarvisensa kanssa. Jokainen koulun oppilas saa nimittäin PYY:n, parhaan yksisarvisystävän. Miran yksisarvinen vain sattuu olemaan varsin yrmeä ja nimeltään Teppo. Tästä tuli jollakin tapaa mieleen Amelia Kulmuri -sarja.
